I don’t remember if they have reacted to any Gino yet. I have heard lots of other reactions to him on other channels. If they haven’t, they will love his music. 10 to one, dollars to donuts, they will label him “blue-eyed soul”. Why not? But he also was so much more.
Jay and Amber, Love that you finally got around to Andy Kim, whom you heard in the Archies’ Sugar Sugar. You asked about all the instruments in Rock Me Gently. Here you go: Backing Vocals - Carol Carmichael And Group Bass - Max Bennett Drums - Ed Greene Guitars - Andy Kim, Ben Benay, Dean Parks, Larry Carlton Keyboards - Michael Omartian Percussion - Gary Coleman Rock Me Gently hit #1 in September 28 1974. Oh Canada!!! And speaking of Canada, you two, and first time artists on your channel, it is far past time you reacted to Blue Rodeo with "Try", Chilliwack with "Fly At Night", Walk Off The Earth (featuring Myles and Isaac) with "Hello" and The Crash Test Dummies with "Superman's Song"!!!!! Go for it, eh?
Start with Max Webster, and nobody has even thought of mentioning Prism who essentially got me through sanding down my 64 Chevy one summer, really really loudly.
From Canada… a lot more by Chilliwack, like “My Girl”, anything from Trooper, starting with “Raise a Little Hell”, “Here for a good time (not a long time)”, “3 Dressed up as a 9”… Sweeney Todd “Juicy Loose” or “Roxy Roller”, Prism “Spaceship Superstar”, “Armageddon”, “Good to be Back”… and the list goes on….
Wow. Forgot about this one. Thanks!! Another feel good summer song try " Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the waves. It was all over the radio back in the day
Yes. To be specific, the Hohner Clavinet. The Hohner Clavinet is basically a cross between a guitar and a keyboard. It plays much like a piano, but it uses a guitar-like pick-up to produce the sound. There is yarn (or now some other material) woven between the strings at one end to give it that funky, muted guitar sound.
Love the song reminds me of Junior high school hanging out with my girlfriends now I’m 63yrs old thank you for taking me back to those fun special days love you guys❤❤❤
He wrote Sugar Sugar for the Archies. In fact, he and Neil Diamond have so much in common musically. One is that they both wrote music for TV show bands.
Andy Kim is still with us and performing. He was very recently on a Canadian tour with fellow Canuck singer-songwriter Dan Hill (whom you two should also check out if you haven't)...
This was his biggest U.S. hit. In his native Canada, Andy Kim had hits with covers of "Be My Baby", "Baby I Love You" as well as "Rainbow Ride" and "Fire". These are worthy songs for reaction.
Andy also had minor hit (#17 in 1970) with a smooth cover of the Ronettes' "Be My Baby." That was probably the first time a lot of '70s teens heard that song.
This song and "Rock the Boat" by the Hues Corporation take me right back to a certain time, I was 15, driving around on a learner's permit taking flying lessons before soloing on my16th birthday. What a great summer.
The sound you're hearing (toward the end) is the sound of a keyboard, more accurately, the Clavinet, played by Michael Omartion. That was a pretty popular keyboard instrument of the 70s, particularly by Stevie Wonder.
Reminds me of great times when troubles were few. I remember thinking it was Neil Diamond when I first heard it. Andy Kim co-wrote Sugar Sugar by The Archies.
This song came out when I was in the 11th grade, very popular. There's a video of Andy Kim talking about when he cowrote Sugar Sugar with Jeff Barry. He sang it also as back up along with Toni White. Ron Dante was lead singer for the Archies fictional group. Sugar Sugar was #1 in 1969. I use to watch the Archies cartoon. Andy Kim had other songs too.
Andy is a great singer who is still performing today. He went to the same high school as my late cousin in Montreal which had many great singers from the 70's and beyond attend including Gino Vanelli, Lisa Dal Bello and Myles Goodwin of the group April Wine.
A popular Canadian artist. Hope you like a nice family story, "The Unicorn song" from the *Irish Rovers* is perfect for Sunday school or anyone on a Sunday listening.
This was the first single I ever bought. I was 9 years old. Bought it at Sam Goody's at Woodbridge Center Mall in NJ. My mom took me. I wore out that record. 50 years later I never get tired of hearing this song
I remember this song came out the year I graduated high school in 1974. He has such a smooth voice. Check out "Baby I love You" and "Sugar Sugar." Sugar Sugar was on the cartoon show "the Archies."
2nd grade !! 1974. Playing on the radio all the time in the I.E. I come from musician stock so I remember music no matter how far back. Glad you found this one "Rob Squad".
This song brings back great memories. I was twelve when this song came out and me and my guy friends would sing this song to girls, we had crushes on when we would be walking home after school. Take a close look at the photo of Andy Kim, does he not resemble a 1970's Neil Diamond and sound like him too? Keep up the great reactions, Rob Squad! 😊
As others have said, Andy Kim is a Canadian artist, and you have reacted to him before. He was lead singer for the Archies and you reacted to "Sugar Sugar". An absolute must of his to react to is "Baby I Love You". "Be My Baby", for good or for ill, is a Ronettes cover.
The funky keyboard during the breakdown section is a Hohner Clavinet, an early electronic instrument also heard prominently on Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. The bright little motif heard at the end of each chorus is a synthesizer.
GREAT SONG!! Loved it back then so much I had to buy the 45 and play it repeatedly. Became a #1 song on Billboard because it was an upbeat and fun song.
Great selection, I'm glad you finally got to this song. It was one of my favorites in the 70's. When I first heard this song when I was in Junior High, I thought it was Neil Diamond. His voice is just as good.
Great reaction to this classic. And yeah that funky instrument on the break, is a keyboard. It’s the same keyboard that Stevie Wonder uses a lot, most famously in “Superstition”: the (Hohner) Clavinet. It’s an electronic instrument based on the older classical keyboard instrument (pre-piano), the clavichord, which plucked the strings instead of having hammers hitting. Followed by the harpsichord, which also did that. Then the piano (originally, the pianoforte, combining the words “piano”, which is Italian for “soft” and “forte”, Italian for loud. But the Clavichord, made by Hohner (most famous for harmonicas), became very much used in rock, soul, prog and jazz-fusion. Yes, and Gentle Giant (you might check them out a very creative outside of the box [“out of the box”, used to be used for something that was formula. “Outside of the box” meant something that was different and unique]used it a lot). But Stevie had the most recognized use of it and used it a lot in many hits.
This song instantly sends me back to 1974 and the youth club I went to. I was almost 11 years old and had just moved from a small village to a large town and music helped me cope.
I see from the comments below that others thought that he sounds like Neil Diamond as well... This was one of my faves from back in the day... Amber gave it her stamp of approval by her big smile and chair dancing...another great reaction, guys...Keep being awesome !!!...
I graduated high school in 1976. One song that popped into my mind from that summer was, “Let Her In”, by John Travolta. Yep! John Travolta! Was on the radio all summer as I recall😁
