I loved Sonia Johnson. My sister and I wept when the news announced on our transistor radio about her excommunication as we got ready for early morning Seminary and school that fateful day. We watched the Phil Donahue episode. We looked on her as a huge underdog up against a very domineering patriarchy in the church and as one who was harshly judged and verbally assassinated by women in the church even more than the men. Vial and often untrue things were said about her for many years. In addition, I can’t tell you how many times I heard in talks, lessons and meetings throughout the 8 States I lived in, “When the prophet speaks, the thinking is done,” and “We don’t know why the Brethren think the amendment will harm the family, but they do and that must be good enough for us to fight its ratification.” So I talked to Heavenly Father about his daughters being lifted up to the full measure of their creation legally and lawfully. In my closet I retreated where it was safe to think things through and to discuss them in depth, and to find refuge in that storm.
