  • Replacing the starter motor on my Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0L TDCI to resolve poor starting issues. This is the second video I've made regarding poor starting. The first can be found here • Mondeo Mk4 poor starting .
    The starter motor worked but drew far too much current causing voltage drops on cables and connections so that only 8v appeared across the motor. Even with the fault the engine would start on the second or third crank. With the new starter motor the engine starts immediately and I have 11v across the motor and less than 0.4v drop on the battery to starter motor cable.

    Thanks for this video. Garage quoted me £300 plus parts, just done my own after watching this vid for the cost of a new starter (£80). Took 45 mins. Cheers

      Result!! On the basis it took you 45 mins and £80 parts then it shows a garage should be charging no more than £150.

    Ive got the same engine in my 2005 cmax. You've given me the confidence to fit my own this week and save me £50 in labour charges. My starter is a little easier than yours to get at as it's slightly higher in the engine bay, so hopefully it will come out ok. Thanks for the vid.

    I have a similar Mondeo with same diesel engine and similar age. This video was very helpful. It took a while to diagnose the reason for poor starting. A crucial comment by Nigel Ealand was that engine management does not allow engine start if the revs are too low. I trickle charged the battery for 3 days, and the old starter turned the engine slowly but no start. I followed the video. Getting the new starter into exact position took me quite a time, so it was a wonderful moment when the engine started on the first turn of the key. My new starter was made by NAPA, (American?), model NSM 1257 and was surprisingly cheap, at less than £100

    I've got the same problem on a s max 2.0. the starter was always a little bit lazy and if you turned the engine over enough the starter motor would slow down even more and make some screaming noise. So I undone the starter and it was dry on all the 3 cogs. And had a load of metal dust from the old worn out clutch that was stuck every were and that's caused it to were out I tried to fix it for hours and it was just so tite when I put it back together there is no point in fixing them just get a new one lol.     what size is the smaller nut i(control switch) as my starter motor start 90% of the time but sometimes its dead so think it might be a loose wire (had the starter replaced 18 months ago, but recently started playing up

    Great video thank you. Quick question for you. Did you do any diagnosis to determine if the starter motor failure was due to the DMF or not ? If so what sort of diagnostic did you do ? I am having a similar problems and I want to rule out a DMF failure leading to a Starter motor failure. Many Thanks. Ed

      I have had a DMF failure on my previous mk3 Mondeo. I detected no symptoms right up to the day the engine would not turn over as the starter was jammed up with dust from the failing clutch. Take the starter motor out. If you have a DMF failing then you will find a load of clutch dust blocking up the starter ring. Good luck and I hope it is just the motor.

    Great that could be my problem thinking about it, it turns over slow in the mornings then its fine ... are you gonna do a strip down of the old starter to see if you can see anything wrong, dragging in the case maybe ?

      The Funeral Director 1965. Almost certainly. The starter motor was on an exchange deal. My best guess is it had shorted windings and not something easily fixed.

    Hi Nigel, I'm having similar issues but it's completely random when it decides to take a few minutes to turn over. Whether it be the first start of the day or starting on a return trip from a nearby shop. (Always when there's an audience) has this sorted it completely? Thanks in advance.

      It has completely sorted my starting issue. Have a look at my video for diagnosing the fault. Because yours is intermittent it doesn’t follow it’s the same issue.

    Good morning Mr Ealand, I have had some issues with my 2011 Ford mondeo 1.6 Diesel and was wondering if I could ask your advice as you are so knowledgable. Everytime I start the car it makes sounds like the engine is about the stop turning but just about catches itself again. This continues for the first 15 minutes or so, and recently the cruise control has just stopped working. I am not that good at DIY and was hoping you may be able to shed some light on the issue.

      Hi. You need to get the car obd2 scanned for faults. It could be the injectors are failing or a sensor used by the engine management. The sensor might also explain the cruise control issue. Time to take it to a garage. I hope you can get it sorted.

    I do have the same problem myself and the mechanic said that my starter is already gone. Now my question is since I have a 2.0 tdci with a dual clutch automatic transmission. Which starter should I buy? I am confuse as many seller says that a power of 1.4kW fits but I know mine has a starter power of 2.2kW. Could you please educate me about this? Thank you.

      The lower powered starter motor may well fit but you have a 2.2kw motor for a reason. If your current motor died then a 1.4kw will die even quicker as it struggles to turn over the engine. My advice would be replace with the 2.2kw.

    Hi mate , i have mondeo 2013 when i try start the engine just crank and not start, unless if i keep pressing on accelerator and quickly in out and keep trying like that few time until engine get star . I already pit new battery and change diesel filter and still same problem.
    What do you think mate ? Cheers

      jordan - have a look at my video on poor starting th-cam.com/video/dFgzWu5obLg/w-d-xo.html.
      You need engine compression, fuel delivery and a reasonable cranking speed for the engine to start. Check and eliminate. When I had poor starting I could see air in the fuel line and found the fuel fitter housing was not fully tight and causing air in the fuel. I also made measurements with a voltmeter to test the glow plugs and the starter motor. Eventually I proved that the starter motor was drawing too much current and that it was not cranking the engine fast enough. The engine management on a diesel will not allow the engine to start unless it turns fast enough. I think you pumping the gas pedal means nothing.
      You could also buy a ODB2 diagnostic connector and a program called Forscan. See my other video for fault diagnostics using Forscan.

    I have the 2.0 TDCI diesel 2008 and when the engine warm after 5 minutes dont want start for few hours,after the engine is cold it starts again the engine runs smooth the rpm is good how it should be what can be the problem?

    I have mondo 2010 zetec got the same problem it took along to get Start yesterday I start it after 5 to six attempts but I can't start it now, is my starter motor gone or their is some fuse need to check or replace

      Quite possibly. Check the battery is not flat first. If the battery is good but the engine turns over slowly then it’s the starter motor. You can measure the voltage from the starter motor + terminal to the chassis while trying to start. If you see less than 10v (mine had just 8v) then the starter is drawing too much current and is dead.

    Hi Nigel, I'm not sure if you're still active but it's worth a shot; I have the same issue on my 57 plate Mondeo 2.0 diesel; except its not starting at all, no matter how hard I try. I bought a multimeter today and took a reading with the red cable of the multimeter on the feed lug (top) of the starter, and the body of the starter and got a reading of between 5-6v. Is this the correct way of taking the reading, and is that reading indicative of a faulty starter motor?

      Hi. Yep I’m still active and thanks for watching. 5-6volts is nowhere near enough to spin the motor. To condemn the starter take one last measurement of the battery volts when starting. It should not drop below 10 volts. If the battery is good and you are getting 5-6 volts across the starter then the starter is faulty and drawing way too much current. Hope that helps.

      Go buy yourself a OBD2 USB cable from ebay and the download FORScan software to read the error codes (forscan.org/download.html). The ODB2 connection is behind a flap in the coin box to the right of the steering wheel.

      Is the tracktion light coming on and the engine? As I have the same problems sometimes but only when driving at about 30-50mph but when going fast and boosting it's normal with no power loss

      @@craighornsby78 I've sold the car, my mondeo was sitting on 155k miles and the turbo was never done before, been told the turbo was fine but when boosting in 3rd gear the car would be shaken been told it could be a fault with one of the Injectors

      There is a plastic shield under the engine that would need removing first. It worked fine the way I did it.

    Така проблема, якщо машина стоїть більше ніж 10год, ( більш замітно це в -5,-20)прокручують пару раз незаводиться акамулятор садить вже незаведеш !!! Відчувається це в холодну пору що може бути можливо підскажете ???
    І чи може ця проблема бути через стартер ?

Через 13 хвилин 25 секунд я вимірюю напругу між з’єднанням стартера від акумулятора та корпусом стартера. Помістіть позитивний щуп лічильника на показану велику гайку, а негативний - на корпус стартера. Якщо стартер і батарея справні, ви повинні зняти щонайменше 10 вольт, коли двигун запускається. У мене було 8 вольт, що означає, що двигун споживав занадто багато струму, що призвело до втрати напруги на з’єднаннях і кабелях від акумулятора до стартера, і двигун обертався надто повільно. Удачі.
