This was before I became a fan of the team and sport. I met Kelly at the OB event more than 10 years ago when it was getting ready to be torn down. A lot of history.

Jim really enjoyed this game because he had wanted to play QB for Penn State, but old Joe Paterno said he already had two QBs better than him and the only scholarship they had was at linebacker ...Jim Kelly took a recruiting visit to Miami, saw girls in bikinis and the beach and the rest is history ...When he got a chance against Paterno he played the game of his life in order to rub it in his face you can see the nonchalant way he shook Paterno's hand in the post match

why on earth would any young guy not pick miami over schools like penn state, ohio state, mich...?with south beach and bikini's? really?

Penn state had a child molester on their coaching staff in Sandusky which is more horrible than Penn state losing

Yeah, it really was a bad choice. Penn State only won 39 games the four years during Jim Kelly's career and won a National Championship, the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl twice, the Gator bowl, had three seasons of ten wins or more and finished in the Top Ten three times while Miami went 30-15 and made literally one bowl game appearance over Jim Kelly's entire career. Congrats😂 They did improve under Bernie Kosar once Kelly was out of town though😂

@@e2go one of the more unsettling things I discovered when I lived in America for a decade is that at times Americans will try and use statistics to try and prove an invalid point. In this instance the point was that from Jim Kelly' s perspective going to Miami was the better option for the longevity of his career and his bank account. Did Joe Parteno make a mistake in his recruitment , in the context of this game yes. Was Joe Parteno a good coach yes he was. Bear Bryant wanted Bo Jackson to be a linebacker at Alabama. Bo went to Auburn....coaches don't always get it right and in this case Jim Kelly made Miami good enough to recruit Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde. So from a Miami perspective it was great. I do not wish Penn State ill ( my one cousin here in Botswana where I now live, played for Penn State)...I was just stating the obvious and that is from a 17 year old boy' s perspective, what would you rather do play linebacker for PennState when you want to be a quarterback or go to what was a lesser program in Miami at the time and play quarterback and be credited with being the reason Miami became the dynast it became . You also would go to class on a campus that looks like a tropical resort. Mr. Kelly made the choice . Your statistics are valid but I think you missed the point of my original post

Was at this game. Cold day. Was more one-sided than the footage suggests.

These 2 teams look like they could play today. Can't say that for most games old I see on TH-cam.

Even more bizarre that Joe Pa thought his future was at LB.

Why? What western pennsylvania qb would want to play at conservative penn state? Paterno never recruited great qb's.... and i can't blame the high school qb's for going to miami or florida state.

One of the first games where modern passing in college started neutralizing the better athletes and started leveling the playing field. Miami’s modern passing changed college football and the traditional powers could no longer “out athlete” opponents.
