Thanks for posting an honest "oops, it's not 💯 yet" video... Too few of these honest videos on TH-cam these days. Most would have just waited to post it until they figured it out to look like they were batting 1000. I appreciate your integrity! Keep up the great work! 💪🏼
Keep going with this S65 AMG, it is a very underrated car and one that has the potential for 900 horsepower with very few bolt ons. My dream car for sure
It's great to see a pro shop with the humility to leave some trials and tribulations on their channel. Looking forward to seeing what the solution will be.
Small correction, the s65 still has the hydraulic suspension, even with road surface scan that are more reliable than the old ones, but no air suspension on s65s
I'm liking these kinds of videos. They are well edited and are some very enjoyable 20 minutes, but you guys gotta get some cameras and microphones, that you can stick onto the trunk, so we can really hear the exhaust, instead of just drive-by's and idle revving.
Hi OJ! Love your channel. I've got a big turbo CL65- granted, it's a W215, so the ECU you're working with is probably better than mine, but I have some thoughts: - Check the Boost reference sensor near the voltage transformer. I've seen a faulty sensor/broken line cause several low boost situations. - Check the diverter valves on the turbos- is one of the rubber diaphragms torn? - With big turbos on this platform, sometimes a manual boost controller is necessary to trick the ECU into allowing the engine to get full boost. At least, that's what I've got on mine. I am running ME2.7 though- not sure if the W222 has an updated system that is more tune-able. - Test the vacuum actuated wastegates with shop air to see at what pressure they are set to open at. Adjust accordingly. The test can be done from the top of the engine- might even be able to make the waste gate adjustments from the top if you've got a tech with skinny arms. - somewhere down the line, have Marcin build the customer a set of intercoolers for that car. He's up near you and he built my friend a set with tial BOV's a few months ago. The stock units will be maxed out with those turbos spooling properly. - worst case scenario, size down those turbos. Or make a log-style manifold and mount the turbos lower. Or use M137 headers and rear mount some turbos. The exhaust manifold is so restrictive and I'd bet the EGT is ridiculously high pre-turbine with those hybrids.
I got so excited to see the end results as I own an S65 AMG. All I could think at the beginning of the video was, I wish I lived in USA so I could get my car modded there. Here in uk, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a properly tuned S65 AMG. These things happen though and I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Looking forward to the next update on this beast!
I had a similar problem with my GL500 m278. No check engine but at the dyno it has 500NM while it should have been 700NM. The problem was the Turbos were not opening & closing fully the cartridges I had replaced on both turbos. At the dyno straight piped, down pipes, resonator delete for true dual & exhaust with valve control, It has done 447Hp although officially it has 435Hp. I have Euro version of the car hence the horse power is different from the GL550 x166 sold in USA. So check the turbos. I'm subbed BTW I love LOUD exhaust systems of the Mercedes engines!
Thanks, most people don't know this car. I'm a future customer. Thanks again. I would love anyone to feel and love of this car, I promise a very surprise.
Dang.... Been there man. What did I mess up here. One of the worst feelings when modding a car. But you guys seem like the ones to get it figured out quickly. Hang in there!
There is a reason Pagani is getting more out of those engines, and it's called crank twist. That crank will twist 3 degrees at 1000NM. You need an EN40 billet crank. The open deck design doesn't help it either.
Is the boost control duty cycle maxing out? I would have expected a low boost code though. Honestly you probably need to have a chat with the turbo vendor.
It’s gotta be the Waste gate…quite possible the supplier hadn’t set em up properly (always factor in human error) also just a thought be for some odd reason or another it actually NEEDS to be tuned perhaps between all the mods it’s triggering a safety “shutdown” just my 2 cents. Cool content nonetheless 👍🏻
Can you check exhaust pressures? The bigger exhaust and bigger turbos make it harder to spool. You may have to set up a table that is specifically designed to get it to spool faster. Like an anti lag setup. Are the waste gates electronic? If so do they have to be programmed to the turbo and engine. You also said hybrid turbos what does that mean?
the engine is an instrumental part in the whole driving experience. that's why ev's now are adding a fake engine sound to help with driving engagement and enjoyment. how's the intake airflow? it shouldn't be struggling to make boost
I don't like running it without a tune, those turbos are really messing with the airflow. I would have thrown a file in while it was on the dyno just to test. The PCM is crazy good at detecting that it could definitely be blowing off boost thinking its getting way to much boost or something. Mercedes boost control is crazy complex, I wish they were a little more simple. That's how they build that board flat TQ line (not a curve) from stock though. The Germans wanted a flat line and they got it lol Throw a tune in it before going to far mechanically just to see if it replicates.
I really want to see what you would do with a BMW N54 engine. I'm struggling through the custom build process of building my BMW 535 wagon (E61) into a single turbo beast but one thing I have yet to figure out is what to do with the 3 inch exhaust it will require.
Look at the graph the car made over 700hp and then went down its torque management cutting the power back because it’s not tuned. So the car is hitting a safety.
If you upgraded turbos without tuning and using same wastegate pressure, you're asking the engine to spin a larger exhaust turbine wheel with no benefit of additional boost, no?
OJ, does adding turbos or ECUs have any effect on the reliability of those 65s? Would you have to upgrade any of the stock items... like Pistons, crankshafts etc
Hi! If heat management it's a problem, why didn't the customer put ceramic coat on the downpipes or used another heat protection, if already spent so much money on it and on the Chiller?
@@FluidMotorUnion Shucks, the idea of possibly owning an FMU shop vehicle certainly was appealing. Appreciate the reply though. Will definitely keep your business on a short list of modifiers when I eventually get that S65

It not about who got the fastest car anymore but how special and how the car make you feel. They don’t make big engine like that anymore and for me it way more exciting than any electric car !
The dealer tech in me says don’t touch the wastegate… ever. But being this has happened now with multiple aftermarket turbos on install, we should know better than not to at least double check and I have a feeling we’re paying for it here. Losing sleep over this one but nothing can be done till we tear into it monday!
Hey I am from northwest Indiana you said you are in Naperville can I get a job w u? I was a mechanic for 15 years. Drag raced too. I want to work on performance cars.
Am I the only one screaming the actuators need to be adjusted. It’s bleeding boost. Need to turn the rod to put more pressure on the dome I.e. turn the boost up. If it makes more then that stock find out what boost does it make from the factory. I’m sure it’s more than what you’re currently running. I doubt the turbo actuators were preset. Just a thought.
All the map sensors ok? doesnt take much to damage them and that will cut the boost and no check engine light....between ignition issues and the ABC systems these cars can be maddening lol
what did i just watch. hopefully the customer is able to send the car to a shop who can tune it to take advantage of the new mods and can diagnose the car based on the data it’s producing
those K series turbos have a adjustable nut on the wastegate bolt that adjusts the boost. I had a K04 on a GTI before and when i replaced it the wastegate was almost closed shut out of the box. I would recommend turning it until you get to about 10psi of boost and going slowly from there.
@@FluidMotorUnion By the way I wish you guys were closer to me. I live in NC and I can't find a shop like yours that specializes on exaust systems. Great content.
Did you tune the transmission and ecu to back off on the torque limits? If you don't, the car will not be able to make any power. It will cut all boost and retard the timing.
lol it's always interesting watching people that have never tuned an S65 think that simply adding bigger turbos and an exhaust without a custom tune that it's going to make big power. there's only 1 or 2 legitimate shops in the US that build these V12TT cars to their maximum potential. this customer spent thousands on labor alone, when he would have been better off going to renntech and just getting a tune and a big intercooler. saved thousands and made more power.
All that talk and effort and it still just sounds like a diesel.. Cant fix these engines imo. Worst sounding V12. I reckon it needs a header complete redesign.
