Hey, Kenny! I'm glad you joined us for the tour. This place was the perfect place to find solitude. There were some days that were incredibly quiet, all you'd hear was an occasional breeze blowing through the sagebrush and maybe a few birds singing in the distance. It's one of my favorite places in this region of Nevada and I'd highly recommend it for you and your dog! Thanks for watching, Kenny! ~ Mike
Federal Law says that in all National Monuments dogs must be kept on a leash 6 feet long or less at all times. They don't want dogs digging things up, nor tearing up the landscape, nor chasing and harassing the native animals. The man who made this video was breaking the Law.

Yes, it is very beautiful here. Most people don't seem to know about this monument, hence, forgotten, but it is important to inform people about our public lands. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Really good video work, impressive. I do feel that folks should find their own bushwacking adventures as part of discovery of nature and themselves. Providing coordinates and locations takes the wrapoing off the gift. Please reconsider.

I've driven across Nevada on US-50 loneliest highway in America or so the signs say. I tend to believe them. I would stop and look at the stars with my binoculars as the Springtime Milky Way was out in early morning. Gets so dark out there when there's no lights for 60 miles the Milky Way could cast a shadow on a Moonless night. Do you have a small telescope like a tabletop 102mm or 4"? Or astronomical binoculars. I have an inexpensive 7x50mm pair of Celestron Cometron binos that are great for viewing the stars. The 50mm or 2" aperture allows them to collect a lot of light, but the 7x magnification makes them easy to hold steady. I now live in Southern New Mexico and don't have far to drive to dark sky. Are you planning to go see the full eclipse on April 8th? I'm driving over to near Fredericksburg, TX to the middle of its track because there won't be another until 2044. I'm in my 70s and am not too sure I'll be around till then. #989
The night skies were incredible on the clear nights. I've thought about getting my hands on a telescope to use in the field. This area is incredibly dark, although you can see the glow from Vegas on the southern horizon, but you're still far enough away that it doesn't interfere with the dark too much. I wasn't planning on traveling to see the eclipse this year. We spent time down on the Tule Valley Hard Pan (dry lake bed) in western Utah and watched last fall's eclipse. It was quite an experience. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I have driven across Utah and Nevada on The Loneliest Highway in America countless times. At one time you could get a map with different stops on it. You would get your map signed, send it to the governor's office and they would send you a I Survived the Loneliest Road in America certificate. I counted the cars I passed one time an it was seven. I was driving my old 1955 Thunderbird and pulled in to get gas and then a sandwich and something to drink. The girl behind the counter said, "I'm not making you a sandwich until you give me a ride in your old car." That is a wonderful drive.
@@Colorado_Native That's humorous, give me a ride or no sandwich. My son asks me why I carry a road atlas of the US and I just tell him that the GPS satellite data (I designed and built the 1st ones) doesn't always work. I have an uncle at the end of a long road in the desert in AZ who gets at least 2 cars a week at his place despite the Dead End sign. He printed out a sketch and gives it to people who pull up.
I really enjoyed the video. I first experienced the desert back in 1962 between Las Vegas and Henderson Nevada. I love the solitude. Hopefully I will see the area you are in this year in my school bus conversion that is fully self contained. What time of the year did you visit the basin and range monument ?
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was incredibly quiet and no people at all. I was there in early May, which on a normal year would be a great time to visit, but last year, when I filmed this, we were emerging from an unusually cold and snowy winter, so it was still pretty cool at night and the first couple of days were very windy with some rain. As long as the roads are dry, you should be able to get in to most of the places that I did. Good luck with the bus, it's a great lifestyle! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
It was still pretty cold (frost on a couple of nights) while we were there and I only saw a Gopher Snake on a warm sunny day as we were leaving. I didn't see much in the way of trash. I usually take garbage bags with me to clean up messy camp sites, and was prepared to do the same out here, but I didn't see any trash the whole time. It's remote enough that the hardy soles that travel from far away to be here seem to practice 'Leave No Trace Ethics'. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Looks a lot like Southern New Mexico, north of Ft. Bliss where I spent my 4 years playing Army. Beautiful but it took a while to appreciate it for what it is.
I've always like the desert, but it was my 28 years in Alaska that really made me appreciate the desert, especially the Mojave. I'd love to spend some time in New Mexico. It's a really beautiful state! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Lol... I'd still encourage you to visit in person. It's very beautiful and a great experience. There are other really nice things to see in eastern Nevada too, like old mining areas/towns, some cool u-dig fossil sites, and a surprising amount of petroglyphs. Lincoln County specifically, is my favorite county in Nevada. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
An old, old seabed, riven by towering tsunamis in more recent times (when all the water was pushed out, drained away to the Gulf of Baja, mostly), but once an inland sea, from the western slopes of the Rockies, to the eastern foothills of the Sierras.
Beautiful, but inhospitable for more than a while. And very cold in winter. I doubt it would show much past habitation eiher, as this seems a very stable and unchanging environment. I see the beauty, but I still prefer my mountains to come with forests, my peace with the abundant voices of the little lives. Where the grass murmurs as it grows, and the dirt smells of the richness of life itself. Where the wind is fluted by leaves and needles into an orchestra of the wild. Thank you for your view of the empty places in your area. Truly awe inspiring.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It's definitely a different kind of wilderness and with the elevation (4500+ft) it has a real winter most years. Most of these mountain ranges surrounding the valleys are really nice, with mixed conifer forests and stands of aspen. There are several year-round streams too. Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
Do it! Be sure to check out the Shooting Gallery too, which is a detached part of the Monument, just west of Alamo. I didn't cover it in this video, but it is worth visiting! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
That would be nice, but it would probably cost more thus cutting in to the mining company's profits. The roads were all in great shape. Most of them are passable with a car. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike.
@@jedpeeler4199 ever been out to Great Basin and the Leman caves. So many nice drives and things to do out in that area. Just don’t go swimming in the tailings pond/ swimming pool in McGill😃😂. I moved East on hwy 50 to Colorado. There’s something about open country that is amazing.
Ely is a fantastic little town with a lot of interesting history and it's surrounded by so much fantastic scenery. Winters kind of remind me of my years in Alaska, but I don't hold that against Ely! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
It was designated in the summer of 2015. I didn't hear about it until 2016 and took a quick trip through it that spring. This trip was me getting back there 7 years later, which I'm glad I did. It's pretty spectacular! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Do you know what all those pockmarks are in the ground about 10 or 20 miles east of Edaven? They are only obvious on google earth if you zoom in. They are southeast of the Basin and Range NM. Thx.
I spent a lot of time there. The desert looks best at sun down, sun up or when cloudy/stormy. I took my dog to a rattlesnake aversion therapy program. It paid off several times.
It's a great place. It was still pretty cold while we were there filming this, we even had frost on a couple of nights, so the rattle snakes weren't active yet. Rattlesnake aversion programs for dogs are a good thing. I'm looking into it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney Yeah. My lab almost got bit when were were several miles from town as she was curious and was about 30 feet ahead of me. I did the math and realized I'd never would have made it back in time. I signed up for the classes as soon as they were available. Thanks for the video
It would be a great place to tour on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, drones aren't allowed in National Monuments. I would have had a bunch of footage but I have to do the drone flying outside of the monuments. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Move to Ely, Nevada. Once you leave town, it all looks like this video. Fantastic unpopulated space. Nevada is about 87% public land, the highest of any state.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I has a friend that attended Burning Man last year when all of the rain happened. He had some interesting stories and pictures, but managed to get out without getting stuck in the mud. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I’m spending the first half of the year (2024) in Germany for work but can’t wait to get back home to Western Colorado so I can enjoy our “empty” lands again with my wife and the dogs. Thank you for the distraction with your well-narrated and produced video.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I've spent some time in the EU (mostly France and Spain) and I really like it (especially the food and the Pyrenees!), but the one thing that Europe doesn't have is vast undeveloped public lands like we enjoy here in the west. It's America's best idea! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
If I can "influence" someone to go out here and camp for a few days, that is a win. It's important for people to know about their public lands and why they should be protected from development. With this channel, I hope to encourage people to get out and explore America's public lands. It's our natural heritage. Thanks for watching the video and I hope you enjoyed it. ~ Mike
What a beautiful place! I have a curiosity about whether or not the dogs ever get into any trouble with wildlife, such as snakes, scorpions, or even sharp rocks on their paws? We want to get a dog. We want to get a motorhome. I see many people bring their dogs out to wilderness areas. Clearly you all think it is safe, but I have to ask about the rare occasions and what to watch out for. Thanks! 😀
It's really nice out there. As for the dogs, Doug (Black w. tail) loves to chase things like moose, deer, porcupines, etc., so when I'm not filming, he is often on a leash. The other two who are older, are really good about not chasing things. I do worry about rattlesnakes from time to time, but we're usually out in these areas in the daytime (Rattlers are generally nocturnal) during the winter/early spring, so we don't see much in the way of snakes. I hike all the time with them, so their paws toughen up and get used to the rocks and dirt so they don't get cut up. Unfortunately, some of these areas have broken glass lying around, so you'll want to watch out for that. Your dogs will love you for taking them out, especially if they know that there is a warm and comfortable RV waiting for them back at camp! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
Boy, those rocks sure do. Fortunately, I haven't had a flat in quite a while. Next time I'm tire shopping, I'll consider it. I broke a lower ball joint once while exploring the mountains of Colorado and didn't really like getting stuck out in the boondocks. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Yes, it's hot in the summer. This was in early May, and it was a bit of a roll-of-the-dice with the weather. We had frost one night, but the days were in the low 60's, which was perfect! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
For the lovers of solitude, USA has a lot of places to choose and, lucky for those lovers, not many who go there, especially outside important hunting seasons. Central PA, comments on a trail description: "Allegheny Front trail is increasingly popular.... " "Yes! We hiked there for three days without meeting anyone! We loved it!". But when I was in a similar place during bear+grouse season, I felt like in a war zone, heavy and light caliber shots from different directions. But the regular hunters seem to know what they are doing.
You'll find a lot of solitude out here for sure. There is so much undeveloped, wild public land out here in the west that I rarely see any hunters. Most of the time when I encounter them, it's during the deer season and they're off trail. I worry about some of the recreational shooters. Too much drinking and carelessness. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. With the exception of a few dirt roads, this place is as it's been for hundreds if not thousands of years. It's fantastic country. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
This was my second time traveling through the monument and I was thinking the same thing both times that I saw it. I might have to hike up to it the next time I'm in the area. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I'm glad you enjoyed the soundtrack. That song is called Cowboy Lullaby by JHS Pedals. These songs were in TH-cam's music library for creators to use. Worked out great! I have a music video edit with no narration that I was thinking about putting up at some point. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Yes, it's incredibly silent. I sleep great! One of the things that I appreciate about this area is that due to it being part of the Air Force's training range, there isn't any commercial airline traffic, so unless I'm getting a free air show, it's super quiet! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Without your dogs you would truly be ALONE. Is there any better companionship than a good dog. Not in my opinion. They would give their life for you. Mans best friend.
As soon as some of the urban graffiti "artists" find an area, it is only a matter of time before they foul it, just like Red Rock outside of Las Vegas. They only get a slap on the wrist!
It doesn't seem to be on most people's radar. At the time it was designated, there were a couple of other monument designations the were controversial, so nobody was paying attention to this one. A hidden gem! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I do worry about it sometimes, but I have only encountered Rattlers three times in the past and they were all in the early 90's. Typically, I'm hiking in these areas during the cooler months when they're not as active and Rattlesnakes are nocturnal so they're most active at night, that being said, the few that I have encountered were out in the evening, so I do keep an eye out for them. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
When you travel around rural Nevada, it is best if you have someone with you. There are many ways to get hurt in the wilderness or to have a breakdown. You also pay attention where you are walking, and stop using your phone, if it gets service out there. Watch out for the various rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, and scorpions (mostly harmless). Stay away from rabbit brush and other bushes which can hide snakes. I almost walked into a very large rattlesnake coiled up just inside my friend's garage's door. The snake had gone in there to cool off. I brushed it out of the garage and it went on its' way. Just another day of living in Nevada!
I don't wear them. In all of my years of wandering out in the backcountry, I've only encountered three Rattlesnakes and that was back in the early 90's. I usually am out in these desert areas in the cooler months when snakes, scorpions, etc aren't as active. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

Yes. That's one of the reasons they were designated a wilderness area before inclusion in the monument. Most of the seemingly dry mountains have little pockets of Ponderosa pines and Bristle cones on the high ridges. I'm going back sometime this year and hope to do some hiking in the Worthington Mountains. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

Nice job.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
From a new subscriber. Enjoyed the video, thank you for posting! These are the types of places where we like to do dispersed camping?
I'm glad that you enjoyed it! This is a perfect place to go camping. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Love your hiking companions!
They're good boys and help keep me warm on cold nights. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Very nice video. Will have to check it out from New Mexico.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a very beautiful place! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
Very cool place
Agreed! I really like it out there. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Beautiful.
Thank you!
~ Mike
Thank you
You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I spent two weeks there last year. I never saw another person while I was there.
I've been through the monument twice now and I never see anybody. More cows than people. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
i'm thankful the dogs and you are safe (rattlers) and i hope you did not see any plastic garbage. this is a beautiful video, Thank You.
~ Mike
Thank you for this video. I was considering visiting eastern Nevada but you just saved me a very long drive.
~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney I really do want to visit the railroad at Ely.
Castle Rock. Kansas.
Anybody been there?
Did you find my lenscap?
Lol. I'll be returning this spring, so I'll keep an eye out for it!
~ Mike
I sooooo love the solitude of the desert of the southwest. It's the closest I get to a religious experience. 👍 Beautiful vid, thanks.
I do too. This place had an abundance of it! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I live in Alamo NV, I’m gonna have to check it out since it’s Local!
Do it! Be sure to check out the Shooting Gallery too, which is a detached part of the Monument, just west of Alamo. I didn't cover it in this video, but it is worth visiting! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
I've often wondered why gold mines don't pile mine waste into artistic shapes... 2:00 Road well graded.
That would be nice, but it would probably cost more thus cutting in to the mining company's profits. The roads were all in great shape. Most of them are passable with a car. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike.
We lived in Ely NV for a few years, and that was one place we enjoyed.
I still do! Best move I ever made!
~ Mike
WOW!
I've driven all around that area on the Hwys, 6/375/318 many times and never knew it was a National Monument.
Thx.
Sounds interesting. Do you have the coordinates? I'll take a look and see what you're looking at and get back to you. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I'd love to explore that on motorcycle, & also to fly my camera drone around for some GR8 photos & video!
It would be a great place to tour on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, drones aren't allowed in National Monuments. I would have had a bunch of footage but I have to do the drone flying outside of the monuments. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I want to be where the people aren't and this looks like a good spot for that.
Move to Ely, Nevada. Once you leave town, it all looks like this video. Fantastic unpopulated space. Nevada is about 87% public land, the highest of any state.
It is! There is a lot of empty country surrounding the monument too. It's a fantastic place! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Remember Burning Man getting rained out? Thanks for sharing!
~ Mike
@@AbouttheJourney Loved hiking in the Pyrenees with my honey some years ago.
Again, Thank You for your videos.
Heard of it. Drove through part of it, decades ago.
Yes it's quiet... Until youtubers and influencers start telling the world about it.
~ Mike
You and the dawgs... nice
And just listen to the silence
It's a great place to enjoy the silence with the dogs. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
From my Nevada off-highway explorations I would recommend 8 or preferably 10 ply tires. Seems like every rock in Nevada has sharp edges!
~ Mike
Summer will be very hot. Hard on people and Vehicles. Be careful. Thanks for the video.
Yes, it's hot in the summer. This was in early May, and it was a bit of a roll-of-the-dice with the weather. We had frost one night, but the days were in the low 60's, which was perfect! Thanks for watching. ~ Mike
All the roads smooth
Yes, they were. It looked like they had been graded recently. Thanks for watching!
~ Mike
My first thought?
They could have filmed "Rubin & Ed" there!
Did you see any "Echo People?"
No Echo People, but the movie does sound interesting. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Just awesome country. So glad to see no development. Talk about get out and getting away. Gorgeous video.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. With the exception of a few dirt roads, this place is as it's been for hundreds if not thousands of years. It's fantastic country. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Too many roads ? left to travel.... ✌️🌵
Life is short, so get out and see them. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
When I've driven through some of the sagebrush country in Nevada I felt like I was in a video game that got lazy with repeating textures. 😂
It sure can seem that way at first glace. The good stuff is in the hidden nooks and crannies. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
That cave at 0:30 looks interesting.
This was my second time traveling through the monument and I was thinking the same thing both times that I saw it. I might have to hike up to it the next time I'm in the area. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike

While I like the scenery, I REALLY dig the surf music sound track!
~ Mike

Find the desert totally amazing
Me too. I love it! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
It’s eerie how quiet it gets. I remember listening to lizards scuttle a hundred yards away. Then the Air Force cracks the skies overhead.
100% agree! I've never been lonely since I've lived with dogs. The best friends anyone could have in life! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
lets keep this place off everyone radar. as this way the creeps will not know about it and destroy it.
As soon as some of the urban graffiti "artists" find an area, it is only a matter of time before they foul it, just like Red Rock outside of Las Vegas. They only get a slap on the wrist!
3 dog night.
Yes! We keep nice and warm in the truck at night. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
I've lived in Las Vegas for 38 years and true to the title have never heard of this place.
It doesn't seem to be on most people's radar. At the time it was designated, there were a couple of other monument designations the were controversial, so nobody was paying attention to this one. A hidden gem! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Aren’t you worried about rattlers biting your dogs?
I do worry about it sometimes, but I have only encountered Rattlers three times in the past and they were all in the early 90's. Typically, I'm hiking in these areas during the cooler months when they're not as active and Rattlesnakes are nocturnal so they're most active at night, that being said, the few that I have encountered were out in the evening, so I do keep an eye out for them. Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
Came for the dogs😅❤
I'll let them know, they'll appreciate it! Thanks for watching! ~ Mike
When and if do you wear snake guards when hiking around.
~ Mike
Thanks for the great tips@@jedpeeler4199

Did you say 2000 yr old trees on top of that mountain?!
~ Mike
