DIY Tune Up - Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe - Rough Idle - part 1

  • In this video I show you how to change the spark plugs in a Toyota Matrix. I am attempting to repair a rough Idle when the car is in drive or reverse. Although this attempt did not solve the problem it did help the car start faster and idle a bit smoother. In the next video I will clean the throttle body.

    Use a piece of rubber fuel line hose to get spark plugs out just push and twist a bit and pull it out. Also use it to thread it in by hand before using a ratchet.

    Those iridium plugs are easily $20+ a piece here in NZ, equivalent US$14-15 each. My '02 Corolla manual calls for regular plugs, so that's what I use. They still apparently last 40,000K or something. I've read it can be worthwhile using longer lasting ones on cars with difficult to reach plugs - saves you dismantling things to change them as often. Makes sense. But any extra horsepower is just marketing rubbish.

    Just FYI I used anti-seize copper for years with my turbo builds and aluminum heads due to heat but I did get sponsored by ngk and yes they are made and designed to NOT use anti-seize per them to me so I stopped but like I said I did for years and I would go through plugs every race lol

    What’s the size of the spark plug socket. I notice 5/8 is very close but actually a bit too big. 16mm maybe???? Was trying to buy a magnetic one but they o to have the 5/8. Ditto the rubber lined one.

  • @rendor21
    @rendor21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Always use the proper spark plug socket with rubber/foam to hold the spark plug inside the socket because it's very easy to bend the electrode and inadvertently change the spark plug gap. Don't risk having the plug fall out of the socket! Also it's 100x easier to get the threads started with the proper socket. Don't just use a deep 16mm socket without the foam insulator.

      Piece of rubber fuel hose good to start the plugs in (foot or so .CHEERS from Westcoast Canada! P.S. If those plugs last 170,000 miles then $7.00 is not expensive!

    Just got done putting in a new intake manifold gasket in my 06 matrix , it was idle ing pretty rough but after I changed the gasket and put everything back together , started her up and she ran a bit rougher and died durning low idle , I suspect it could be the plugs could be fouled , cause it was running lean for a bit ...

      These cars have to relearn to idle after you disconnect the battery or work on a system like the intake. You might just want to drive it around a bit and see if it straightens out. Good luck!

      You might try cleaning the throttle body. Also check the rear lower engine mount. Believe it or not that was the cause of vibration on the car in this video. Good luck.

      You could also look into cleaning the MAF (mass air flow) sensor, very easy to do, lots of videos on youtube on the procedure. You can purchase MAF sensor cleaner at an automotive shop, which can also be used to clean the throttle body as well.

      Check the engine mounts. That's what it was on this car I'm working on in the video. I have a video somewhere on my channel about how to check if the mounts are good or bad. Good luck!

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm, it could be a problem with the valve train. Maybe the camshaft has a worn lobe or a lifter or valve could be stuck open. It could be a low compression issue on one or more of the cylinders. I'd start with a compression test, that should tell you how much internal wear there is on the engine. It could also be a vacuum leak. I've heard leaking intake gaskets on this car can cause vibrations. It could be fuel related, fuel filter/pump/injectors. Unfortunately it could be any number of things causing it. When I'm in that situation I start with the cheapest part (fuel filter) and work my way up.
