You so succinctly described truth vs tradition. I have been convicted about traditions of man for over 30 years and always feel like I am swimming upstream and suffering judgement by friends. Traditions of man are yokes Jesus never intended us to bear. Traditions of man are easily co-opted by secularism for material gain. It isn’t about ME being right. It is about WHAT is right with God’s own Words and me honoring and obeying Him. Thank you for your thoughts today on Lent.
Heidi, I shared this in messenger with several of my mom friends, including a catholic. Her reply was once she “heard the reference to Timothy 3:16 and sola scriptura she had to stop listening”. I thought that was very telling.
I pray that the Truth reveals itself to us. You are really kind and generous and if you're in the wrong in your approach (I am by no means the one to say that) but if you are, I pray the truth reveals itself to you, as I wish for you to be as close to Him as possible. Thank you for all of your videos. They've helped me a lot in my journey back to God. Bless you.
I am so glad you made this video. I am a new Christian (in that I was born Catholic, left all aspects of Christianity and was drawn back by God and am now Christian) and I had wondered where the roots of Lent were and whether there was actual scripture dictating anything about Lent, Ash Wednesday, etc. So thank you, this was very timely!
It depends on how and why it is done. Prayer and fasting is absolutely biblical. If one holds to a strict regulative principle an organized integration into worship of the church would be problematic. If one decides to use the time period prior to Resurrection Day for private preparation I see no problem with it.
They are biblical ( prayer and fasting) but as shown here scripturally, not requirements and done a specific way. Passover is very important to all Christian’s- but that prepared heart should be focused on and lived out all year long. 🙏🏼
@@HeavenlyMindedHome I don't think we are that far apart on this issue. Neither my previous Baptistic-Arminio-Dispy tradition nor my current conservative Presbyterian one are big into complex observations but in both popular evangelicalism and the reformed world there is a tendency to throw out the baby with the bath water (e.g. justification by faith alone ==> antinomianism). As to fasting IMO it is not really a question of requirement. It is not so much that it is required but that it is assumed. "When you fast...", "When you give..." etc.
Hey thanks for the video! I found it very interesting. Just some thoughts - I’d argue that Ash Wednesday is not about showing how religious you are, but rather, it’s a tangible reminder to ourselves of our humanity. I’d also argue that the practice of Lent has nothing to do with our salvation and is instead about our sanctification. I do have one question - I noticed that your family celebrates Hannukah and I’m curious about how you make the distinction between celebrating it versus celebrating traditional Christian holidays, given that Hannukah is not commanded by God in the Bible. For example, why celebrate Hannukah but not celebrate Easter?
I think it is still fine to do it if your Heart is motivatetd by the right reason and can be helpful. And there are Many religious christians just loving the Lord. May they be blessed in the Time of lent and seek the Lord.
Guys please- lets not debate over something that deepens our Christian walk. It is unnecessary to add confusion and drive wedges among believers. We need to encourage each other to draw close to the Lord in these difficult days and that’s going to look different. He sees our hearts.
Thank you! I was struggling with what I should 'give up' for Lent. That got me started wondering about the whole tradition. I'm not even Catholic, but felt like I was supposed to be depriving myself of something to please God during these next 6 weeks. Thanks for clarifying a subject I obviously know little about !
So it’s possible to participate in Lent as long as we don’t turn it into a showy spectacle and we feel led to give something up? I’ve never considered Lent before this year so I’m still learning
Lent is a time to deepen our love for Christ. Sure every day that’s a possibility but we live in a world with cycles and right now 1+ billion Christians are giving up something to deepen our love with Christ. Christ fasted for 40 days, gave his life, and more so I think Lent is a beautiful experience :)
Hi. I’ve been on sort of a faith journey thing, trying to figure out if I should stay Catholic since I’m a cradle Catholic, or not. About the 66 books though, what do you think about how the Bible originally had more books (73) and then Martin Luther removed them during the reformation? Christians up until that time used all those books. Don’t you think that all those books were inspired by God? I’m struggling with this, would love your thoughts.
This is a good video on Lent which I find that it does have Biblical roots. As a Catholic we should follow Lent but it explains that it should also be private, b/w you and the Lord. It’s all about the Lord. As a Christian you don’t need to follow Lent but it’s good to know the true tradition of Lent if you are interested ❤
Our Lord refers to us as sheep. And we certainly are! I grew up in the Episcopal Church. Sadly, they totally rejected the Bible about 50 years ago, so we left. We now attend a Baptist church and have for about 35 years. I said all that to say that I believe I have a deeper faith and a stronger biblical foundation because of the Episcopla church than most Baptists. It all has to do with your heart and why you do something. Most people go through life doing what is right in front of them at the moment. By having Lent and Advent and other seasons and holy days we are at least reminded to LOOK at CHRIST. To remember how blessed we are, what a loving God we have, what sacrifices He has made for us. Otherwise, we are out buying stuffed bunnies and jelly beans without a thought to the Cross. Or, traipsing through Wal-mart or Toys-r-Us to the tune of "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" totally ignorant of the Greatest Gift mankind has ever received. Do what is in your heart.
If giving up something or adding something during Lent or at other times helps someone focus more on God there is nothing wrong with it. I like adding something positive to turn my attention toward God, and to serve those whom He places in my life each day. Some of these could include: showing kindness and compassion to others reading a devotional book or specific book in the Bible Texting or calling a family member or friend to offer encouraging words every day Lisa Anne Dupree 🙂🌻✝️🙏🏻🦋
Do you have a series/ teaching on the ‘biblical holy days’ your family does take part in that you mentioned. I would be interested in knowing more about them and the context of them etc.
I was taught that fasting is only from food as that is what we need to survive and anything else (social media for example) is considered something else but I don’t remember what they called it. Is that biblically accurate?
We see Biblically fasting from marital relations- so there can be other ways to fast, even if "from food" being the main. Fasting has its role, but is never commanded of us. www.gotquestions.org/fasting-Christian.html
I find myself a bit torn when I watch your videos on Lent, Christmas, etc. Halloween ... totally agree! I understand based on your videos, that you have given up many holidays just to integrate many Jewish holidays which "biblically" The Lord has not called us to do. The only thing he asked us to celebrate is his death and resurrection via communion. So, if we are now adding all the Jewish holidays, then we fall back into believing works make us better christians and legalism. But as with man made law, we apply it only when we want as long as it makes us feel better about ourselves. Christ does not call us to make sacrifices to purify ourselves as we cannot, but dedicating special time to bring your heart and desires close to God should not be shunned. Where is the grace then?
So sorry you guys misunderstood- we're NOT integrating Jewish holidays. If you're Jewish- sure! Enjoy the traditions you feel you want to. I'm not in any way switching to Jewish holidays. Our family personally enjoys the Biblical days that God gives- but we enjoy them because the whole basis of the seven appointed times t's all about his death, burial resurrection and then SOON return! No one has to celebrate those, we simply share about why we do. Big difference between taking a Biblical time (especially the ones we will be celebrating in the Kingdom) and enjoying the special time of the Lord vs. feeling pressured to adhere to a man-made (Catholic in this example of Lent) system that isn't Biblically based in any of the Lord's commands. Sorry that didn't come clearly for you guys- certainly wouldn't stand behind any of those points in the comment as that's not our goal in anything we've ever put out. 🙏🏼📖
The holy days in Leviticus are not “Jewish holidays”. In fact, in Leviticus 23:1, The Lord said they are “the feasts of the Lord” and “these are My feasts”. In Acts, even the believing Gentiles kept the holy days with the Apostles. The original church in Acts kept all of these feasts because they understood that each holy day represented what Jesus did and what He is prophesied to do later. For an example, Passover represents Jesus sacrifice (He is our Passover lamb) 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 “Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 KJV
It would seem that Christ expected His followers would fast since He said “when you fast” instead of “if you fast”. I bring this out in relation to true Biblical fasting, not in relation to lent. Any thoughts on this?
Again, nothing wrong with fasting- also, he was talking to Jews who were commanded to observe the Biblical feasts which includes a time of fasting. :) The day of Atonement commands a day of fasting, the religious leaders had turned the system into much more than God called for. The point of fasting is never to bring attention to oneself as they did with all their external show. Hope that helps! :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I know you are saying there is nothing wrong with fasting, but I think that could be undermining its value in a sense. I still agree that it is not clearly commanded like prayer is. However, later in Matthew, Christ said His disciples would fast once the bridegroom (Himself) was taken away. We also see fasting & prayer in Acts. So I think the expectation of fasting definitely is there for believers and not just the Jews & disciples who were being addressed at the time of Matthew 6. Hey thanks for this video. As someone who struggles with spiritual discipline, I find I am really drawn towards the orthodox or Catholic traditions in terms of their fasting. While I am firmly planted in the protestant community I can appreciate that it’s a specific time of reflection and fasting.. I’m coming out of a period of lukewarmness, so I think that’s probably why. when I think of fasting, I think of not eating at all. My body really doesn’t like that and my blood sugar drops but apparently it’s not always that? Any tips for genuinely fasting in a safe way?
Ask the Lord if HE is truly asking you to fast ( food) and if HE is, then ask HIM to show you/ tell you what is the best way for you…what HE wants it to look like. What food to fast from or how much. If it is truly from HIM then HE will have the perfect , ‘healthy’ way for you to do it. It is possible, but much more unlikely that God would require you to do anything that makes you feel terrible and is not good for your health. Would you require or ask your children to do something that you know would either make them feel truly awful or be harmful to their health? How much more loving is God the father. God is a gracious, loving, kind and gentle father and apart from the very rare exceptions where HE has some very specific work HE wants to do in someone’s life and HE will provide the protection and grace to go through it, I would generally error on the side that if the kind of fasting ( food) you’re thinking of or others are doing around you is having a truly negative and potentially harmful effect on your health then I would question ( with the Lord) if it really is Him leading and guiding you. As she says in this video it is in no way required and it may be coming from ‘our flesh’ or even the devil…the same way she explains all the other unbiblical reasons that people can think they need to or ‘should’ fast. I’m not saying that’s you, I don’t know. That’s why I suggested truly shutting out all other ‘voices’ ( even your own) and try to hear what God has to say. Hope that helps.

@@Sypeth Hi! For me personally I am Catholic because it was Founded by Christ Himself. All other denominations are Man made. Yes, the Catholic Church has had its faults (scandals etc) but for me I stay Catholic because it was formed by Jesus Himself and he gave the apostles the authority and tradition to carry it down the line. All of the Sacraments are why I stay. Receiving our Lord in the Eucharist. It gives many graces. Same with confession. It all points back to Christ Himself and is much better of a guide for me than doing it all myself. Having that community. We do everything for His Glory and to grow closer to Him. We read the Bible as well (I am in a Bible Study) and the Mass is full of scripture too. My Catholic faith brings me much peace in growing towards God. I’m not here to try and convince anyone. I believe everyone’s Faith journey is different and cannot be forced of course. I like to look at our similarities more than differences and rejoice that we are both in our own paths toward Christ and Eternity. God Bless ❤️
I appreciate your message here, but you need to look at using a biblical Bible, as in the King James authorized version. Would you be willing to study against the counterfeit “bibles?
Along with bringing your ‘beauty’ standards / expectations before the Lord…making sure they are not ONLY worldly expectations….You also don’t need a whole bunch (“most “) of them, you only need ONE. Pray and ask God to help you ‘see’ and recognize one for you. Or ask for strength to continue waiting and focus on Him. You may also want to consider getting to know some of the ‘ugly’ ones as women, ( with clear boundaries) you may learn some things from them.
Ironic that you insist we walk in Jesus’s ways but then also insist that we not fast for 40 days. Your insincere kind tone is incredibly disrespectful. You can’t say something disrespectful and then dressed it up in a little pretty box. I’ll observe lent because the early Christians did. Also, your blatant disregard of eastern orthodoxy and oriental orthodoxy is incredibly disrespectful to Christian groups who are historically been persecuted far worse than we have. When you see all the scandals there are, both within the Catholic Church (pedophiles, raping nuns…) and the Christian community (pastors stealing money from the community), why would I trust man made tradition over the scriptures ? It is a question I am struggling with, I read the bible and have faith but I don’t belong to any church and I’m not Catholic nor Protestant.
What denomination are you?
If it is in the Bible, we want it, if it is not in the Bible we do not want it.
We want to please the Lord, not man👍🙏✝️♥️
I appreciate your message here, but you need to look at using a biblical Bible, as in the King James authorized version. Would you be willing to study against the counterfeit “bibles?
An area we’ve studied thoroughly- and KJV onlyism is certainly not an area we’d plant ourselves in.
hi i want a christian girlfriend but most of them are ugly, what should i do
Look to the truth of what the Lord calls you to and not some sort of external judgement of looks. 📖
thank you
Along with bringing your ‘beauty’ standards / expectations before the Lord…making sure they are not ONLY worldly expectations….You also don’t need a whole bunch (“most “) of them, you only need ONE.
I pray no one finds this video.
I hope your dog doesn't stay outside all the time
Not always- although we do have livestock guardians and they certainly stay out with the livestock. ☺️
It is wild to me that that is what you took away from this video.
@chandaelizabeth3046 Same 🫠
Well that's off topic 😅😅😅
