I actually disagree with the "it's too safe" take. I find it genuinely refreshing to just listen to some good metal. Modern metal IS experimental. I think sleep token really paved the way for that in the scene, now other bands are trying to be different. Don't get me wrong, I love bands like bmth, bad omens, sleep token, etc. who are really good at that experimental sound, but damn, sometimes i just want to go back to slipknot days where it was just there. It was there, and it was good.
I see the album as a chameleon performance. Each song is a nod to a quite specific band/subgenre influence, and simultaneously staying away from hinting what's exactly Poppy's thing. Except if it's the chameleon thing.
Growing up in the 2000s it still hit my metal head itch but I got some early 2000s pop hints like madonna, no doubt, got a little evanescence blue October sounds on a few, some fun jpop vibes, seriously this album start to finish sounded like my junior high mp3 on shuffle, she packed alot of different vibes in this. She was kind of on my radar but now she's got me hooked
Damn Nik. I missed you reacting to it. I had never heard of Poppy until last weekend when Spotify started thowing some tracks my way. I liked what I heard.
Oh my god my brain nearly went through the back of my skull, how tf is that such an accurate comparison 😂 I haven't thought of Michelle Branch in a decade
Poppy is an example of an artist who REALLY dedicates their all to their craft. She's been taking vocal lessons for screaming as well as singing for years now, it's quite evident when you listen to her earlier work how much she's improved. She learned guitar, bass and I believe basic drumming?, so she could contribute more to the songwriting and communicate her vision better. And she took modern dance classes and works out to better her vocal performance (I'm a singer myself, it makes SUCH a difference to breath control and vocal stamina)
Gonna be a hot take for sure, but I have heard zero songs from the new LP that made me feel anything. Poppy has some great screaming moments and a talent for clean vocal melodies.
Okay Post Zero isn't that bad, it's just barely anything out of the album as a whole. The singles were the best part. The rapping and singing at parts felt off and it's like a mixture of older LP with Dead Sara influence. Like a solid 7 I guess.
Agreed, LP album isn't bad, but it's also not amazing. Listened to both albums and i find myself replaying Poppy songs way more (and way more different ones too)
"Jutebox record" is a great way to describe Poppy's new album. She really wore her influences on her sleeves with these songs. lol but not in a jarring way like the last Avenged Sevenfold album. Great album, I'll be replaying it the next couple days for sure.
I also felt like the singles were not experimental enough, but listening to this album as a whole is just wow. It gives a clear, finished picture. Reminded me of how modern metal albums are constructed, like TDOPOM.
Two three years ago I wanted to brush her off, didn’t understand a feature with Bad Omens, talked trash, then was completely blown away by her with Knocked Loose yet was still somehow skeptical. This album is actually a diamond in the rough right now, I have zero complaints and only good things to say about it. Absolutely tremendous song writing and choruses. Jordan took this record to the top with her. I hope she sticks around in this genre for real.
I have to disagree with you on some things. The most octane core song is no way out and the chorus of the cost of giving up is incredible. Also the electronics are very nice all around and the intro of the 1st song is very NIN inspired and cool.
After last year's Zig, I was way more satisfied by this one! I love the versatility on it, Poppy's doing a lot in very little time, and I'd love to see her do more stuff like Center's Falling Out!
Easily her best release. I didn’t even know this came out until about an hour ago and enjoyed every song off this project. Crystallized is an amazing song and overall this record is one of my favorite, if not the best album of the year.

new way out just sounds like Sleeping With Sirens to me. In a good way
Just looked at her Tour dates cause I never really followed her and what her music really sounded like.
Saw that shes touring with Babymetal next year. So, gonna see her in Hamburg in May :D
It really damn good, her best work imo
This album absolutely slaps. Was pleasantly surprised.
I liked this album better than the Linkin Park album
Surviving on Defiance 🔥
Best song on the album imo
Shoegaze 🔥 my favorite on the album for sure
Really enjoyed the album but surprised critics seem to like it so much tbh, would’ve thought they’d find it too generic as, like you say, it’s a modern metal jukebox record
It's because she's giving jukebox sounds how no one else combines them.
@ true I get that, would like to see her next project combine the metal core with some more experimental stuff but I’ll defo be listening to this album for a while
@@MassiveEverywhere, her early music had great eclectic mixes of subgenres, check out I'm Poppy and Aristocrat for 8-Bit and awesome lo-fi strings, and she'd absolutely smash more than she is to take her current era to that level of difference from others. She's really the most David Bowie female artist who we've got.
@@chrismeadows4216 will do mate thanks
I think on first listen I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as quirky bizarre as something like I Disagree, but by the second listen, lyrically & vocally it's one of her best and there is more subtle genre blending occurring.
Yeah Poppy’s album stomps all over the new LP album in pretty much every way
Yeah, because these albums are so comparable... lmao
Trying something new vs riding nostalgia coattails off a dead man, yeah I’ll take something new
@@Mukduck619Man I love poppy, but if you think this is new then sorry to disappoint you lol
@@cerostymcobviously not,, people says that because both albums came out in the same day. (Poppys album its mostly METAL, meanwhile linkin Parks is rock)
This album is one of my favorites of the year. It’s fun
I'll give Jordan Fish credit. He broke out of his metalcore formula and revived Willam Orbit's strange cargo/ray of light vibe. RESPECT!
This is actually my first exposure to Poppy, so thanks for the recomendation. I'll give it a listen. I feel like I'll enjoy it. :D
Listen to them all, trust me. If you're a diverse person who likes catchy and cute, start with her Bubblebath EP, and if you're intense, start with her Choke EP or I Disagree. Her TH-cam videos are also really provocative and artsy.
Definitely need to go back and check out I Disagree, it's a bit all over the place but still a lot of fun.
So how would you Poppy in 30 seconds?
* performs a séance to call a banshee to the earthly realm, sets a drum machine to auto-blast, microwaves tin foil, and records a cat meowing gently into a microphone *
Been bouncing between this album and and the new counterparts EP the last couple of days. Really enjoy this one.
Title: it's wild!
Full contents on the video: meh this album exists
I love Crystallized, it's got this poppy goth sound that I just can't get over.
Great album i really loved
I saw her live when A7X was touring earlier this year, Poppy puts on a helluva show 🤘
"They're all vibe ludes"
Man, all ludes give vibes. Just ask Jordan Belfort
Yesterday I found out, the guitar dude from House Of Protection co-wrote the whole album with Jordan and Poppy. That makes it even more fun.
Stevis also cowrote scary mask with poppy and Fever 333 in 2019.
He was also in the hardcore band The Chariot.
I didn't even know Jordan was producing it, and yet it was very obvious that it felt like BMTH's latest projects. I enjoyed it very much.
You're overanalyzing a really great album.
Halo & they're all around us my absolute favs
Poppy is the best!! She changed my life!! Listening since the church opened and even a little before
Damn Nik. I missed you reacting to it. I had never heard of Poppy until last weekend when Spotify started thowing some tracks my way. I liked what I heard.
Bring Me The Jordan-man 😅 Fish is lowkey a genius tbh.
vital is so good! It's like Michelle Branch but metal!
I havent heard Michelle Branch in years. Jfc. I got Hole, Deftones, Spiritbox and Linkin Park vibes from this album
I love the Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton comparisons, and what I need to iterate is... Avril Lavigne. 🥴
Reminded me of Bilmuri
Oh my god my brain nearly went through the back of my skull, how tf is that such an accurate comparison 😂 I haven't thought of Michelle Branch in a decade
Poppy is an example of an artist who REALLY dedicates their all to their craft. She's been taking vocal lessons for screaming as well as singing for years now, it's quite evident when you listen to her earlier work how much she's improved. She learned guitar, bass and I believe basic drumming?, so she could contribute more to the songwriting and communicate her vision better. And she took modern dance classes and works out to better her vocal performance (I'm a singer myself, it makes SUCH a difference to breath control and vocal stamina)
this Album is probably my album of the year
that's weird
You need to get your ears checked
Alongside with Jeris Johnson % Vended
@@ivaerz4977 no. This album its so good.
I actually find the album has MUCH more replay-ability than Linkin Parks
100% agree. This is better than Linkin Park
Gonna be a hot take for sure, but I have heard zero songs from the new LP that made me feel anything. Poppy has some great screaming moments and a talent for clean vocal melodies.
New linkin park is… quite terrible. They should’ve just changed the name
I’ve been a fan since I was like 11 and I am no longer anymore
Great album, I'll be replaying it the next couple days for sure.
i found the best "yhooooh" scream.... it's a band called "fatal move" and the song is "lost cause". about 10 seconds in
I also felt like the singles were not experimental enough, but listening to this album as a whole is just wow. It gives a clear, finished picture. Reminded me of how modern metal albums are constructed, like TDOPOM.
Poppy is the QUEEN 👑
I saw this in my notifications and the title was caught off at *WARNING PO- and my ass was trippin’
"negative spaces" gave me "girls not grey" (AFI) vibes hard
Thank you Niktony Noctano, very cool!
You got me intrigued to hear this album in full now. Thanks Nik.
This is probably my album of the year, and in no way did I expect it to be. Absolutely blown away at how good this was.
It's a good day to be a metalhead when we get new Linkin Park, Poppy, AND Worm Shepard.
Blown away by this album, I think it's so so good
cant wait to give this afew playthroughs thanks for the review, i love me a bunch of references
0:00 I thought you was doing some new Cannibal Corpse type of intro
loving the format
I think this is her best work, at least since Flux, possibly better than I Disagree
This album is awesome and I want her to marry me
Borp is the new Blegh
