  • A forum member asked how difficult it was to swap out the change gears on a Precision Matthews PM1440 lathe. I decided it might be helpful to take a quick video. This is my first crack at this, so it's pretty rough but hopefully helpful to some. This is applicable to many of the Asian lathes, a lot of them share the same basic platform.
It should go without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway. Remove power from the machine before taking the cover off! Years ago a friend nearly lost a finger while doing this, anything that will cut steel doesn't even slow down for flesh.
I shot this with a Fuji HS20, this is not a video camera but it seems to have done a fair job.

Mike, Thanks for the video! I always struggled with getting the mesh clearance right, but your tip with the folded paper is just the job!

Thanks for this, I'm going to attempt to change the one at work, it looks very similar to yours.

I'm looking at getting this lathe. After owning it for a couple years now, how is it working out for you?

Overall it's been a good machine, no real problems and I've used it quite a lot, made some parts yesterday and as usual it just woks.
