Thank you this brought tears of joy and sadness. I am this very weekend working on a poetry project which speaks of the massacres in Australia of Indigenous Australians, including my kin. Few memorials dot the landscape acknowledging the sacrifices of those who fought and died defending their soil either. However I take solace in the life of my Great Aunt, who at 12 was stolen from the desert in Western Australia and after grooming and etiquette lessons she was sent to a Moravian Mission in Victoria as part of an arranged marriage program, to an Indigenous man. It was strict rules in the Mission but she rebelled by sharing her rations with other inmates and speaking of independence. They reduced her rations as punishment so she lead a walk off and protest at the mission. She was exiled and separated from her children and her husband had to follow her in exile, despite his protests. Notes by the missionaries about her were copious. A true troublemaker in the greatest sense. I love her.

ZiBRA Counselling Solutions I have been apalled, disgusted, and deeply saddened by the treatment of our Indigenous Australians for many years. Our so-called “leaders” have done very little to acknowledge the injustices suffered by Indigenous Australians. The “Sorry” speech by Kevin Rudd was a start, but since then nothing has been done. I am horrified that mining companies are permitted to even consider destroying sacred sites - this should be banned outright by the Government and enshrined in law. Australia has nothing to be proud of regarding the treatment - past AND current - of Indigenous Australians. It may not mean much in the scheme of things, but I am sorry.

I agree with my fellow Australians wholeheartedly. I was totally unprepared and shocked as a 13 year old researching some family history to learn the bars on the magnificent old house that had been in my family were to keep the Aboriginals out and to make sure they would stay away, white people gave them poisoned flour. These white people may have been my ancestors. The grief, shame and horror I feel knowing I share that DNA is sometimes overwhelming. I was born in a town in NSW which was classed the most racist based on a referendum in the '60s to recognize our indigenous people. Proud Australian? Not me. #BlackLivesMatter.

This might be considered a mad idea, but wouldn't it be great if these weekly talks could be taken up by the International Curriculum as part of children's schooling. Thanks again Sandi for making history relevent.

I had much of my education in Massachusetts (not that far from Amherst, coincidentally). MA is considered one of the best states in the U.S. to receive an education, yet I learn more about American history from these 10-minute clips than I did in 15 years of schooling.

Vox Tox has been a beacon of solace during these troubling times. The effects of lock down initially stunt my ability to do anything more than watch videos of other people playing video games. This series has given me a renewed zest for learning, so much so that I've started writing again and doing my own research. Thank you so much, Sandi, Debbie and Alex, these videos are truly inspiring.
PS Sandi, please bring back those incredible Hawaiian shirts you were sporting in the final May videos. At the very least, please let us know where you purchased them from.

A particularly heartfelt chat to a (I trust) particularly thoughtful audience this week. Sometimes life can feel an uphill battle, but when compared to the stark reality of those from history, and sadly, those who even now must struggle for what we each deserve; equality, then my own ‘hurdles’ seem so insignificant. I struggle with the words to convey what my heart feels. Please don’t think my inability to convey my feelings means I have none... Be kind.

Hello from Montreal where we did get rid of Amherst, fittingly renaming the street “Atateken Street”. Yes that’s a rainbow flag on the lamppost, Atateken St goes through Montreal’s Gay Village. Good article from the CBC here on what it means:

Two interesting songs: Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit and Nina Simone's Mississippi Goddam.
My local community, the Town of Hartford, VT, just declared Juneteenth* a local holiday. VT, among other states, has changed Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day. Hasn't changed on the national level though.
*en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth (despite the Emancipation Proclamation, slavery still existed in the Oklahoma territory. Interestingly, the slave holders were Indian and it took some time after the end of the Civil War for it to finally come to an end - www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=SL003 - it wasn't until statehood that it finally came to an end.) But, then Jim Crow - things weren't necessarily better in the North.

I went to school in Alabama. I’m lucky I can spell “history.” This is a state that, back in 1989 had, as part of their high school graduation exam, had this question: “Out of the following four shapes, which is the circle?” I’m not kidding. I should have skipped high school and college and just gone to the library. Education wise I would have been better off. I am continually finding things I should have been taught back then. I’ll never be able to fill in all the holes. Thanks for helping me with these, Sandi. You’re a treasure.

    Common Dust
    By Georgia Douglas Johnson
And who shall separate the dust
    What later we shall be:
Whose keen discerning eye will scan
    And solve the mystery?
The high, the low, the rich, the poor,
The black, the white, the red,
    And all the chromatique between,
Of whom shall it be said:
    Here lies the dust of Africa;
    Here are the sons of Rome;
    Here lies the one unlabelled,
The world at large his home!
Can one then separate the dust?
    Will mankind lie apart,
When life has settled back again
The same as from the start?

Thank you again Sandi. As a student of history, there is so much more not talked about in schools then what is actually taught. When I brought this up in an education class 30+ years ago I was told that teachers need to teach to the tests and that side trips through history while nice will take students away from the important tasks of scoring high, which is good for the schools and for them to get into a good college. One problem, of many, is the students get to college and the process starts over again as conformity rules the day. People like history to be simple. Heck most people want everything simple, lord forbid that any effort was involved.
Thank you again, "be kind" has become my watch word(s).

As someone who only knew Sandi from the banking show (which I loved) it is wonderful to be introduced to this much more interesting and engaging aspect of her. I shall be looking for a copy of the trip down the Zambezi next. And I might amend my email sign-off from Be well, to Be well and be kind.

Sandi, thank you so much for your intellectual and experiential generosity! You’ve brought so many female heroes of history to my attention that have inspired, empowered and uplifted me.
When I was little I wanted to be a boy because they seemed to have all the adventures and discoveries. I decided to just behave as though I had the same right to that as they did and mostly it worked - but I imagine now how much it would have meant to tiny me to learn not just of a diverse cast of men, but more of the women who didn’t just sit passively beside them.
I hope you know how inspiring you are, not just directly but indirectly, as every little girl and woman you reach imbues someone else with the fascinating stories they learn from you!

I worked as a guide at a reconstruction of one of the forts (Michilimackinac) attacked in Pontiac’s War. I became personally interested in learning this sliver of history (the most unified front presented by natives against the English).
First, when attacking the fort, the French civilians still living there were unharmed by the natives. The French had respected traditional customs of gift-giving and reciprocity, whereas the English refused to do likewise. To be fair, some British officers knew this was a bad idea but didn’t have the authority to overrule Amherst. It was a typical example of what happens when we don’t respect other people’s customs, rights and ways of life.
As for the rest ... well, I feel fortunate to have visited a couple of slave outposts I’m Ghana. I say fortunate, because once you have the scales lifted from your eyes and can see the long shadowy hand of history reaching through time to affect the present, it changes you for the better. It changed me. It gave me the ability to understand the present more clearly and how I can be a better person in this moment and the next, for myself, my family, friends and everyone.

Sandi, could you please see to that subtitles are turned on for all of your videos? It makes them more accessible (people who are deaf/HoH, does not have english as their first language, cannot (at the moment of watching) look at videos with sound on, just find it easier to follow, and probably many more reasons). A plus (which I'm not sure you care about) is that it also increases your views. I think you should definitely be involved in deciding who should be commemorated by a statue. You'd have some brilliant ideas.

Up until only recently the Metropolitan Police had on there books, Norwell Lionel Roberts QPM is a British former police constable and served between 1967 and 1997.
However it has been corrected and John Kent who served in Maryport, Cumbria (then Cumberland) under the Carlisle City Police. He started out as a Supernumerary Constable in August 1837, becoming a Substantive Constable in October 1837. He served for seven years up until 1844 when he was dismissed for being drunk and disorderly. I must point out, back then water wasn't always safe to drink, beer having gone through various treatments was much safer to drink. He later became a court bailiff and then a parish constable.

Boys have been taught to war, war, war. While girls have been taught to nurture. Thank god? that the younger generations are joining in more and more with the "women's jobs". At 22 I was caring for my baby, running a house and working nights as a nurse and my mother-in-law would often say "men need their relaxation" as he would leave for a weekend of potholing. That's when baby and me got our relaxation, just playing.

Thank you sandi for your wonderful tales and storys from history. I have loved your enthusiasm for women in history, as I never heard of many women in history as a young girl. I wish you would do your own book on the real women in history, and their real storys.i couldn't think of any lady more qualified or experienced to do justice for women from history, that most people had never heard of. Thank you so much for your wonderful vlogs and for your past works.and good luck and blessings for any future endeavors, which I am sure will be fabulously wonderful ,thank you x

I love your videos. Unfortunately, they took up Amherst's idea about small pox infected blankets in the 19th century out west. sigh.

Have Harriet Jacobs Incidents in The Life of a Slave Girl; inspiring; ashamed to say I had forgotten I had it until you reminded me today. Might I suggest a look at Phillis Wheatley; brought as a slave girl of 14 from Senegal to Boston. She wrote letters and poems to George Washington in 1775, extracts fo which I have in Black Writers of America. He ends his reply to her Your obedient humble servant George Washington. How can we learn from history if we don't know half of it?

Very true. Just as the history books often only teach the parts that make a nation look good or not nearly as bad as it actually is. Or the stories that police make up to outright lie or attempt to justify brutality. There are those who would prefer certain truths not be brought to light. Not surprisingly, truth perseveres.
