  • Great to hear that FL are not scrapping 90050..! In late Sep-23 - The loco was moved from it's long-time storage position up to the main ramp on Basford Hall VMF ready to be moved (presumably by road) to Crewe Heritage Centre.
    The team at Crewe Heritage Centre will be cosmetically repairing the loco over the short-mid term with FL retaining the ownership.
    It's great that FL have taken the decision to do this rather than just scrap the loco.
    See the other locos on the move and stabled at Crewe Basford Hall whilst I visited over the last weekend in September also.
    Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching

    It's good that 90 050 has been saved the next thing is to restore it to its formal glory

    Freightliner additionally acquired 90016 which was provided by EWS as a replacement for 90050, which was withdrawn in 2004 following fire damage while on lease to EWS, suffered a transformer fire at Coventry on 30/9/2004 while working 4M73 an Ipswich to Ditton container train .90050 was the last mixed traffic electric loco to be built at Crewe Works for BR and was also the last 90 to be released into traffic. its suffered server fire damage over 19yrs ago and there was way to much damage for it to be repaired hence its was stripped of all usable parts for the rest of the class aswell as 90033 - and its only on loan to Crewe Heritage Centre from Freightliner.

    Popped over last weekend to do some measuring up and take some pic's, had a brew with the curator he told me it was on it's way. Don't worry, the restoration guys are spot on and the guy who does the paint is pretty damn good. Not really a fan of post steam, but the 125 he just painted in the yard is pretty awesome.

      Thinking of visiting Crewe Heritage Centre this month, same day as non event day visit to Nantwich. Will look out for Progress Rail at Longport on the way through on the 'Knotty' (Crewe - Derby line).

      Cos it was a parts donor and there wasn't a further use for it .. storing it anywhere else is going to take up valuable space, one only has to look at where DBs 90s ..and their surplus 60s have been stored for the last twenty years to see

    I'd have thought electric locos that were just over 30 years old would have some useful life left in them, so what's the hard nosed business case for letting them rot at Crewe? Is it really cheaper to run diesels under the wires hauling freight trains? Is it because the cost of swapping them for diesels at the point where the wires stop is too costly? Or just that because the passenger demand has gone that they're surplus to requirements?
    These are 5,000 hp machines!

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Word is it’s cost of electricity right now. I know there’s some electrical feed capacity issues on the WCML that probably contribute to that too

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@johnson_street_IEMD I thought the main route for the 90-hauled freights was the West Coast Main Line, not the Anglian routes?
      The ECML power upgrade is to allow more fast paths. The West Coast Main Line also has issues with traction draw, especially with the freights, particularly around Euston, Crewe, Preston, and the north side of Birmingham. There's a long-running program to upgrade, replace or modernize existing power feeders on the WCML that's been delayed multiple times. I saw a map of it somewhere

    • @johnson_street_IEMD
      @johnson_street_IEMD 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @andrewreynolds4949 the 90s join the services at ipswich and go from there to Trafford Park, Crewe Basford, Coatbridge, Ditton and Garston .. and may soon be operating Ipswich to Daventry DIRFT

      Because it’s only a cosmetic restoration and freight liner probably don’t want to give away a different 90 which can be of use to them as they run the 90s daily still

    • @johnson_street_IEMD
      @johnson_street_IEMD 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @TRAlNVlDEOS yep spot on .. and hopefully they'll acquire DBs 90s to bolster their fleet with the contracts they've recently secured.. both the active ones to swell operations and the long term stored ones to service their active fleet for parts as and when
