    from a writing perspective stephen king nailed pascow, its so sweet the whole concept of a ghost essentially swearing an oath because you treated them with care and respect in their final moments the selflessness of using that spiritually prophetic gift at the point of death for *someone else* seeing that they're in danger and the trope of them appearing scary but wanting to help like in the sixth sense is a very rare exploration of themes and how it echoes throughout the family.

    This was filmed around the University of Maine when I was at school there. The scene of Pascow being brought to the infirmary was filmed right down the hill from my dorm I sat in my window for hours and watched them set up and film. Also, the burial scene with Stephen King was filmed right down the road from campus,in an actual cemetery, and me and friends snuck through the woods and are hiding in the trees behind King, about a hundred yards away, while that was being filmed. Also, separate from this movie, there's are great films in between The Shining and this one. Fire starter, Cujo and The Dead Zone should definitely be on your list. This is my favorite type of horror. The type of horror where the supernatural element is introduced to serve the emotional core of the story. An emotional core that is universally relatable: dealing with the trauma and grief of losing a loved one, and the despicable things a human would do in the misguided hope of getting that happiness back.
    Slasher horror, body horror and other types in the horror genre are all cool and serve their own purpose for entertainment. But I love a horror with a good story and meaningful themes behind it.

    25:36 - ... losing a child ...
    in the "six feet under" series, IIRC, there was a dialogue, that when someone loses his spouse - he/she is widowed, when someone loses his parents - he/she is orphan, but it is so awful to lose a child, that there isn't even a word for that.

    When your neighbor tells you 'sometimes dead is better' and a dead patient of yours tells you 'the ground is sour', then those words should sink into your mind and soul as fair and helpful warnings.
    But having placed your daughter's cat and your recently deceased toddler son into the soil of a sacred Native American burial ground, though....

  • @rabbitandcrow
    @rabbitandcrow หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Good observation about him having to really commit to the burial for the long haul. The book is brilliant at conveying what a long, tedious process it is and how he goes around and around in his head trying to rationalize it the whole time. It’s really exhausting and utterly unnerving. One of the reasons it’s so hard to do a Stephen King adaptation is because his books are ultimately about psychology and internal struggles.

    It's amazing how the truck driver makes zero attempts to avoid hitting Gage and only honks his horn.

    • @quwykxz
      @quwykxz 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not sure that "amazing" is the right word... A very similar thing happened to me when I was about 5 years old; I mean, I wasn't buried in a mystical/cursed plot of land and came back from the dead, but I was run over by a truck, and the driver honked his horn, once before hitting me, and again as he was leaving. I lost a leg, and my folks couldn't even sue the guy because he had nothing and was living in his truck.
      Many years later, I learned that truckers have a lot of pressure put on them to deliver their payload(s) A.S.A.P., and it is drilled into them at the start of their careers not to slow down or stop for ANYTHING until they reach their destination(s).
      "Anything" normally means bad weather, bad roads, or other such driving issues, but it is heavily implied to the drivers that it also means no stopping for food, or regular rests, and, if taken to the extreme, things, animals, or people on the road.
      That's why you see/hear so many stories of truck drivers being overly tired and even asleep behind the wheel, or drunk, or having accidents when no one should be driving because of bad weather, or constantly drinking (idrinking is used as a way to fight off not only the loneliness of the long drives and the pressure of the deadlines, but it's also used to trick the stomach into not feeling so hungry, because it's filled with alcohol instead of actual food, so your body thinks it's getting the fuel it needs)... or slamming into busses and cars with kids in them, or running over pets and kids.....

She allowed me to read them after her only after she found out I had swiped "The Shining" from the drawer she had it hidden in waiting for my brother to finish it when I was 10. She figured there was no way she could keep me from them since my 8 years older than me could not finish Shining, but here the 10-year-old was sneaky reading it and was on like the final couple chapters. I actually got paddled in school when my Reading class teacher caught me reading "IT' during class instead of the stupid short story reading cards. And closing the movie with a song called Pet Sematary I thought was a unique way to end it. That song was also my first real introduction the music of The Ramones and I have been a fan ever since. My favorite Stephen King novel, not to mention my favorite book ever, is The Stand. I highly recommend the 1994 television miniseries adaptation of that book. Another classic King novel made into a film, directed by the legendary John Carpenter, is Christine. And, if you want another movie from the 80's directed by a woman, check out 1987's Near Dark; it was the very first movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow. She is one of my favorite directors. Near Dark is a vampire movie starring Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Tim Thomerson, Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein and the late Bill Paxton.

    You should definitely check out the remake of PET SEMATARY!! It makes one surprise change, and that's enough to make it really interesting. Thanks for this one. Magnificent reaction!!

    The remake has a bit of a twist in the plot and the way the film is shot it's clear the viewer isn't supposed to see it coming. Unfortunately there was no way to market it without spoiling the difference. Even the poster puts it front and center. I'd recommend avoiding anything related to the remake beforehand if you choose to watch it.

    "Pet Cemetery" and "One Cut of The Dead" are two of the most original zombie films I've seen. PC has zero tropes, so many will argue it's not a zombie film, but you have to admit, they are bringing dead people back to life right? One Cut first 45 minutes is the campiest zombie film ever, then the credits roll and you're like "It's over already" then the real film begins and blows your mind with it's meta structure.

      You're right, Pet Sematary is not a zombie movie. Bringing the dead back to life is called resurrection in general.

    As sad as the movie is, the book is absolutely soul crushing. It was technically a very good horror novel but I'd never read it again. The grief and despair the characters suffer through is just too much. 😢💔

    In the book, the burial ground is described to have a sort of hypnotic hold on people, almost like a drug. "You make up the sweetest smelling reasons to go up there" Jud says in the book, but it's just the place that wants you. Stephen King is great at making inanimate objects monsters (the burial grounds, the overlook hotel, Christine, and so on)

    What made this book the scariest I've ever read (SK or otherwise) is the father's descent into madness, and how we share that perspective too, so by the time Gage comes back, and it's just this little dead boy's body being animated by something evil, we're there with him and have that experience with him. What makes adaptations of SK books like this poor, is they just film what happens, just the plot points, without using what cinema is capable of to accomplish what his writing does in the books. The Shining, as much as SK hates it, presumably for the changes Kubrick made from the book, is an example of a film that does this and does it really well - the atmosphere, and Jack's sanity slipping away that we experience with him. The non-horror King books like Shawshank and Stand By Me, are very successful because there isn't a horror/sanity aspect to duplicate (or fail to); they are dramas and on that level they work very well. But every single adaptation of an SK horror novel has been shitty, and King himself alas doesn't seem to detect it - maybe for him it's just the ego boost of seeing his work on TV or as a movie.

    Some great adaptations of King's work are some of his mini-series. If you ever delve into some of those beyond the It mini-series and later movies you tw mentioned, Storm of the Century and The Outsiders were very good as was both the old and new version of the Stand. A lot of people bash the newer one but I thought people were being overly critical, though I do like the original better. The Mr Mercedes TV series which only ran three years and 30 episodes is really underrated too, and the 1st episode of the series alone is enough to truly haunt your dreams in a way only King can.

    The only thing I didn't like about this film was that it cut out a lot of the interaction between Ellie and Pascow. The book went into so much more depth on their connection, and showing that wouldn't have added much more runtime.

My favorite is The Secret Window with Johnny Depp, its so good me and my mom always go all out and have to make corn on the cob to eat for dinner while watching lmao. If you know you know😂 Gatta watch it eventually not many people have reacted to it if any! That and maximum overdrive is also a really good one.

    I absolutely feel very bad for Haley and Stella, 'cuz like Ellie, she too has a little brother!!!!
    Personally, I love this particular place in the family- gives me or anyone else who's the same way a feeling of being a sort of protector, like a guardian. Even BFF's feel like this as well!!!! And I know this firsthand 'cuz I have a little sister and I have friends, old and new, who I treat as family!!!!😌🙏
    In short, I feel where you're coming from, ladies!!!!🥺

    Good reactions. Big hit back in its day. There's a real sadness to it. The scenes that always got to me the most was when Louis stuck the needle in Gage's neck and the boy cried. The other when he held him at the cemetery after digging him up. Still hard to watch.
