Very interesting that Ivan plays the oldscool forehandgrip, not the modern topspingrip like eastern, western or semywestern. I see it in germany only from guys 50+😅 (no offence). Loved his flat one-handed backhand. Never seen a one-handed with almost no spin. Crazy player and very cool to watch ! 🎉
You're referring to eastern and semi-western? I noticed Ivan was using a Federer-esque takeback on the forehand as well, which does work best with an eastern grip (Federer used the eastern grip as well). Eastern and federer's takeback are very precise, so I think that contributed to some of his unforced errors. It is interesting that you only see eastern from guys 50+, as it is still a very popular grip at every level with the exception of professional and similarly high levels where semi-western has become most popular. Personally I use the eastern (29 yo) and I know plenty of other people here in the States that use it as well
@@baller7387Hi! I know Federer's eastern. To me Ivan doesn't play it. With an eastern grip it is also posible to create a lot of topspin like with an semywestern. I don't mean eastern with oldscoolgrip. With this oldscoolgrip wich I mean you are not able to create topspin only with the wristflick, you have to create it more from your shoulder. Maybe it's more clear what I see here. The missing topspin in Ivan's strokes could also be the reason for his out-wide-mistakes. Maybe I'm wrong. Just what I see. Peace
@@dirtyreiner Ok, I see. To me it looks like his grip is a standard eastern grip. So if I'm hearing you correctly, it sounds like what you're referring to with "oldscoolgrip" is the way the racket is swung as opposed to the actual way that it is gripped with the hand. As far as Federer is concerned, I was referring to how Ivan takes the racket back on the forehand. Specifically, the racket being held vertically with the left hand before descending in a quarter circle to a horizontal and lengthwise position prior to initiating the forward stroke. Of course, Ivan's stroke doesn't look anywhere near as fluid or clean as Federer's, but to my eye he is emulating Federer. And this would make sense, as I've heard Federer's takeback on the forehand is and has been one of the most popular to imitate for high level juniors/players that grew up during Federer's career. All that said, I agree that you can create topspin with the eastern grip, although certainly not as readily or as easily as you can with the semiwestern. And I agree that Ivan's motion looks a bit stiff/robotic and "old school" in the sense that his rackets path is pretty linear through the air (not brushing up but pushing through), leading to flatter shots with less margin for error that require greater precision than topspin heavy shots. It is worth noting that the eastern forehand is more conducive to flat hitting than topspin, so it makes sense that he's hitting this way given his grip. But again, I think we can agree that his motion was contributing to some of his sillier unforced errors
@MrFunkyko Well thats not really true. He's 6'6 and jacked ashit. Of course he's going to be a bit slower but he slaps the ball regardless with good technique and uses his size. Kinda like shaq in basketball
Hey Karue, every serve is the kick serve-set up. Every serve based off of the kick set up. Your whole axis, fall after the serve, load, shoulder turn, eye sight, focus, everything that’s going into the serve is based on just that. The kick serve first serve set up is how you address all your serves. Your opponent should see you focused on the kick serve always. Here’s the drill: The goal of the drill is to land the kick serve out wide with pace. On the ad side, 3x slice serves up the T, then 1x kicker out wide with pace. The kicker out wide is what this drill is for. It’s to land that serve. The kick serve first serve set up is how you address all your serves. Do this on repeat to bake in the concept so its natural on every serve. Most serves will be the slice, which is setting up the kick. Most people will miss when trying to hit the kick after 3 or 4 slices. By always addressing every serve with the set up that makes that serve, hitting that serve when you do try it is what separates us. Once you have that, there’s always more. So, you’ll hit the kickish serve with an upward arm finish, and the slice with a pulling down arm finish. For deception, you can jump up on the slice since since ur pulling down on it, and hunch down after hitting the kickish serve, since ur arm finish is going up on that one. Get it? Hope that helps.
Really? Serve was impressive (even with though he doesn't have a full follow through) but consistency on the back hand slice was terrible. I am sure thats not how he normally plays.
considering the 2 UTR difference and the fact that there's typically a big jump in skill when you get the high 12s low 13s (compared to a 5.5 or mid 11 UTR player) rather shocking result. in fairness ivan clearly did not bring his A game to the match for whatever reason and kyle played lights out. kudos to both for putting on the show.
Now THAT is something you don't see every day! At a time when everyone is playing semi western to extreme western, the Giant is cracking flat one-handers and blasting random forehands with a super old school eastern grip. He's like a weird hybrid of Karlovic and Bill Tilden 😂
I think Klay's serve is stronger, doesn't seem like he has to rush through his motion. I want to add another name here and that's Coach Chase, whom Winston had played against. Chase's serve is smooth and effortless.
Lord me and big dude would have had to fight after that match. How you going to take this man racquet and ace the hell outta him!! You betta slow that serve down got damn it!! Roflmao. Big man is a whole Unit and told no lies...GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!
I think that consistency is overrated. It is not how many times you get the ball in play, but rather if you win the points that matter. Ivan won the points that he needed to win. It reminded me of old school Sampras. Sampras looked like he used the first 4 return games to try new things and warm up, dumping a bunch of backhands in the net during the process. Then all of a sudden at 4-4, he would play a few solid points and get the break then serve out the set.
I agree with you. There were a lot of missed returns, backhands in the net, cross court forehands in the net when it’s only like the 2nd or 3rd ball, not making first serves, and slices at weird times. At their level, I’m sure they are keeping track of the stats in their head, and this was a poor match. I will say Ivan did a great job closing into the net after his powerful serves but he seemed more nonchalant with his footwork and bending his knees, which is probably why he missed some easier put aways. Kyle just looked like he was scrambling and his court positioning is all over the place. It’s like he is jumping around and then rushing to the net because he can’t keep up in a rally, which probably means he needs a better return.
@@sirbrochill7757 I don’t care if he misses shots. Id give him a wildcard into every tournament. His power is incredible and his body positioning carousel are a yes. I’m a fan
Great match, I will bet a hundred bucks on Ivan to destroy Mark in a 3 set match outdoors. Winston can hold the money and Mark can give my Hundred bucks that I win to Ivan. Mark’s second serve is trash outdoors and sets up like a tee ball. If I was in my twenties I would beat Mark in straight sets on clay! I can’t move anymore so I would lose at 52 years old. But the fact is that everyone loses and people should have respect for the players. Congratulations to the players.
