Best Router for Custom Car Audio - Porter Cable 890

  • The Porter Cable 890 Series router and accessories is in my opinion the BEST choice for custom car audio. Variable speed, plenty of power, 1/4" and 1/2" collets for router bits, but best of all... The base design allows you to easily make a cost effective router table. Pickup one of these and you will have a GREAT start for building custom audio.

      Mark, does the Bosch still have the height adjustment if you mount it under instead of using a true router lift to make a router table?

      @@erikmartin8383 In the link you will find the "Under-mount/ Under-table Base w/ Hex Key" option... I have the PC-892 setup and the Bosch-1617 and both work great!

      A couple Amazon reviews hinted at issues using this router inverted in a table? Have you had any issues? In another video, I was amazed at how quiet your router was! My older cheaper craftsman is obnoxiously loud... great helpful videos - thank You!

    I love my PC 890. I have it mounted on my homemade CNC, and it takes everything I can throw at it. I've been a big fan of Porter Cable routers for 30 years, and know professionals who use the same Porter Cable routers we can get in their shops daily. Some of these routers are over 40 years old, too. Blow the motor out with compressed air when you're finished using it that day, put brushes in it when they wear out, and it'll outlive all of us.
    A couple of tips for the use of a PC 890. It's main weak point is the spindle lock. I would respectfully suggest you don't even use it. Use two 1 1/8" wrenches to tighten and loosen the collet. Next, take the bit and collet out of the router when you're finished using it. It's much easier to get out than it is if you leave it in until you need to use it the next time. You can get 1/8" (as well as other sizes) collets for it from Elaire Corp, if you use smaller bits like I do. I would also suggest keeping a spare set of motor brushes on hand. They're not expensive, and they're real easy to replace. All motor brushes wear out, and having a set on hand, ready to go, means less down time when it suddenly decides not to work.
    Great video! I've really been enjoying your work! Please keep 'em coming!

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great point on the spindle lock, I didn’t think to mention that, I too always use two wrenches rather than bothering with the lock. Good idea on having some extra brushes on hand too. Time to order some!

    I build all kinds of things in my shop. What I like about your videos is that it doesn't matter if I build a bookcase, speaker box or wine rack your techniques are always a help. I've been building for years, but I have learned a lot from these videos. You turned my router into a center piece of my shop. Before I just used it for edge details and occasional dove tails.
    Oh, I have several routers, but my 890 is my fav! Great video Mark! Keep them coming!

    Yep.. Have absolutely loved the 890.. Took a chance on your recommendation maybe a year and a half ago, and have been thrilled ever since. From just speaker rings to my full infinite baffle build, and various projects, along with being able to do a nice job with an IB rear-deck baffle as a "thank you" for a great seasoned competition pro who helped me learn to fiberglass. The 890 is THE router I would recommend.

    Thanks Mark for this vid. I always wanted a router table, but i never knew how to make a really cheap one, that would work. I did search on you tube on how to make a router table and it is so complicating or to much work to make one. You have just made my life easier about 6 hrs easier in making a router table. with only one tool and a few holes and a piece of wood. thanks again.

    Holy crap I need that adjuster, have the same router and didn't even know this existed! I just figured the extra holes where for some other router but that will make it so much easier than what I was doing. The plunge base is nice and it does make it slightly safer to use as you don't have to rock the base when you're starting. Another advantage with the PC is my local tool repair company stocks the parts and the bearings so I can get back up same day.

    Dude read my mind. I bought some tools and some wood and built my own. Came out impressive enough for others to ask me to build for them. I'm my case, the tools got the job done but they would not do for an actual builder. Sometimes its best to spend the extra few dollars on a better tool the first time than having to buy another because the lower priced model may make you work harder than you have to. Love the video. Keep em coming bro

    I have a Skil brand router. it came with a fixed and plunge base. It gets the job done but it has a few flaws. it is nearly impossible to adjust when it is upside down in a router table. I mostly keep it attached to its plunge base and mounted in my Jasper Circle jig. I definitely would have been better off with a better router.

    I was wondering if you can make a youtube video tutorial on the different types of wood found at Home Depot for Car Audio box builders. I know a lot like to use "Birch and MDF" but there are so many different sizes and types of wood at Home Depot and confuses me. I'm a total newb when it comes to wood and cutting it. My Electrical side of Car Audio is all I know. I was thinking about slapping a piece of wood onto my door so I can screw down one of my eBay speaker pods.

    I know what my next toy purchase is going to be. I've been wanting a router table for a while, but I guess I'm selling my Ryobi RE180 and buying this!
    On a side note...I do paint and body and I use a lot of electric tools. (Most guys use compressor tools.) I have been using the Porter Cable 6 in sander/polisher as a sander for probably 15, 16 years, maybe more...and I do a LOT of sanding with it. I had to replace one because it got run over, another one I can't remember why, actually, I think it's only been 2! The last one I was sanding the _____ out of something, and it literally sheered off from the orbit part where it connects to the motor.
    On a second side note...I work once in a while with people I know in my business, I take really good care of my tools, and I have reason to believe since he has the same sander as me, that we mixed them up and I got his...still it lasted years after that.
    Here's the short version...that Porter Cable for the money is AWESOME!

    I have a serious question for you/other commenters, i ordered a sundown 15" 750w rms sub for $278. I just realized that i can get a bass line PSI 15" 750w for $220. Should i return the sundown to get the PSI? Which brand do you prefer? P.S. if i returned what ive already ordered id have to pay return shipping on a 15" sub and a 3.2ft^3 box

    I ordered one of these a few months ago with the web site saying there is a back order. Figured I could wait a while. Just got told by the company I ordered it from that it has unfortunately been discontinued. Got any advice for an alternative? I'm considering a Triton but I like the Porter Cable "lock height from above the table" function

    Hey Mark, could you someday do a project using Valchromat? It's an engineered wood that's moisture resistant, higher mechanical strength, good for machining in three dimensions, has a greater resistance to bending, easier to finish, and is easier on tools. It also uses a bonding resin instead of formaldehyde based glue or whatever most MDF uses, comes in a variety of colors, and is supposedly superior to MDF, and claimed to be an evolution of MDF.
    The 3d machining would be good for internal surfaces, and since it's stronger you might be able to get away with using thinner pieces? I'm also curious to the acoustic properties, since MDF is almost acoustically dead, I wonder if this would have better or worse properties.
    For a video idea; Do the same design of box with same sub that's hooked up to the same amp, only variable being the material. It'd be interesting to see the results and see if there's really a difference between Valchromat and MDF, then see if there's really a difference between MDF, plywood, hard/soft woods, drywall (I've heard of someone using a drywall box but not sure if it was legitimate), and other building materials.

      Also in the U.S. we have both 115/120v and 230/240 electrical systems. I'm not sure how your electrical system works but in the U.S. we can hook a 120v line on to a 240 line at the breaker/fuse buy only hooking up to one side. A 240 has 3 wired one neutral and two supplies that are 120v each that combined make 240 volts check with your local electrician this is something you may be able to do!

      I think it goes straight with 230v only connects two wires and ground.. not an electrician but have an line at school with some of it

    2.25 hp from 15 amp breaker?

    • @hugoharo8868
      @hugoharo8868 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Looks pretty close 746 watts/hp * 2.25hp = 1678.5watts/120v puts us at a hair under 14amps. The spec sheet reads 12 amps which is the consistent pull. While 14 amps looks pretty close that's only peak draw and circuit breakers are designed to overload for short periods of time. Theoretically you should be fine but you might trip it every now and then. Definitely would bump to 20 to be safe but this should work.

    That router has electronic feedback speed control. Always buy a router with feedback speed control. Porter cable, Hitachi, both excellent choices for routers. SPEND THE MONEY ON A GOOD ROUTER. At least 2 HP. 3 HP even better.
