  • Portrait photos are a great way to get started in photography. Just pair a great subject with a nice background and boom portrait photography. If you can level up your game in this area you can start doing real photography work. Now before you start shooting remember that editing can be done later to remove little objects and unwanted items in your photo.
Always think ahead when planning to shot and remember the power of Photo Editing. Please don't drive your model/subject crazy by taking forever. If you want everything just right think about what needs to be done now and what can be handled in editing
Thanks for watching and I'm looking forward to replying to your comments and questions.

just a couple thoughts re so far the first three images. 1. all the light reflections on the background behind the subject should be removed and maybe even better to add an overlay and mask from the subject. 2. with the "cool" guy when photographing, "if it bends, bend it" so at the time of exposure, be sure to not leave straight arms. Also, because the eye goes to the lightest and brightest objects in an image, the car at the back of the image could be removed as the red tail lights just cause the viewer to see that first and the subject later. 3. the image of you and your wife -- when you zoom in particularly, the bit of leaves on the tree are growing out of your face and should be removed. Secondly, the pole in the background is also growing out of your head and needs to be removed. There are more but I think the concept is indicated. with portraits, keep the distractions very minimal if at all. Also in the cropping, a good idea is to have the eye level of the subject about 1/3 from the top of the frame and also try to leave more room to go to than coming from so when someone is walking toward the camera leave a bit more in front. HTH Now I will return to regular programming lol.

@@BriNathanCollins Are you planning to be an EMT or Firefighter? A few more notes if I can remember everything. 1. the image of your wife and even some others. Bodies square to the camera are not the most attractive way to photograph the human form. Also try to avoid shooting up at a subject unless there is a specific reason. The reasons basically are that seeing nostrils is not attractive and there can be distortion to the face.
Let me offer a simple way to pose a subject. Of course the location, lighting etc will have an impact upon the direction of the body but once the placement is decided upon proceed as follows.
      1. turn the body 2/3 to the camera location. (the reason for this is to show both shoulders equally and not emphasize one side or the other of the subject which also can distort the human form.
      2. ask the subject to move the foot closet to the camera about 1' forward and then let his/her weight shift to the back foot. This creates a high and low shoulder.
This something a photographer should practice at home so he/she can demonstrate. Actually it is a natural way to stand as maintaining a soldier like stance can be difficult so we tend to so exactly as suggested.
so to summarize: body 2/3 to camera; one foot forward; all the weight on the back foot
Next to be concerned with is Masculine and Feminine Attitude. Females can be photographed in both attitudes whereas Males should be done in a Masculine attitude only.
Feminine -- a basic shape for the female is to create an S curve. In a Full Length a simple method from the basic pose is to do a simple inward knee kick of the front leg. By moving that same leg outward from the opposite leg, the S curve can be extenuated.
As mentioned at the beginning light and background can be a factor. For the feminine pose, the head should be turned toward the light with the body turned away from the light (particularly important when the subject has light or white clothing on) and the S curve is continued by tilting the head toward the high shoulder -- see above also.
For the masculine pose, turn the body positioning toward the light source and then pose the subject as above and then adjust the subjects head to be perpendicular to the shoulder line not to the horizon which is what humans would do naturally but not wanted when doing the portrait.
The next image was of the male subject that had the mole. Again the subject was square to the camera. Also, importantly is the fact that there was a huge dark shadow on the wall. Solve this by using an off camera light if possible or in any event try to have the subject 6-8' away from the background.
In both of these images, a background texture/overlay would be beneficial.
Keep in mind that before removing moles from a subject in post, discuss this with the subject as he/she may be quite content with the way that looks as it is part of his physical appearance on a permanent fashion unlike perhaps a pimple or scratch etc.
The same holds for skin softening, eye color, eyebrows and lips/teeth. Moderation in everything is the key. Sure starlets and models will be happy with extensive retouching but most people look best more natural.
There was one image that showed closeup of the eye. This also showed something to be concerned about and that is the correct 5 facial views -- Full Face, 2 -2/3 plus 2 Profiles. (actually it is possible to have 4 profiles based upon whether the front or the back of the body is used. Some photographers don't use the back which is ok too but when working quickly during a wedding shoot I always found it easy to do some nice compositions that way.
The 2/3 view is important to understand. The photographer should be looking to divide the face 1/3 & 2/3 based upon the portions on one side or the other of the nose. When creating the 2/3 view it is important to ONLY bring the nose to the inside edge of the far eye and make sure that there is no V cutout from the orbit of the eye. I always say "check for the blood from the axe use to cut out the side of the head" -- there should be none ok.
When doing the profile make sure that a. no far eyelash is visible or the head will not be a correct profile b. be sure the light comes from the opposite side of the camera position so that the near side of the face is not front lit.
This gives the basics of composition of the portrait. Even in street photography, facial views while more difficult can be created by just looking and moving the camera position quickly. Yes it is more difficult and you will miss but the more it is practiced the better the results.
The next subject -- lady with the red purse. We have spoken about RED in the past. Rather than crossing the body with the strap of the purse, hand the purse on the near shoulder and perhaps even cover some of it with the jacket. In post remove all of the white distractions on the pavement. This image also would be helped with a sky replacement -- another topic for one of your videos. Lastly, remove any other distractions in the background and apply a vignette to contain the viewers eye onto the subject.
I believe the last subject was the girl in the woods. Cropping tighter would have helped as the blue (light color) distracted from the face. Vignette again. There may have been other things but I just can't remember and this message is getting long.
      HTH
