Wowzers what a super review. Well i took delivery of my first edition model before Christmas and actually rode it for the first time yesterday....we ran out of milk so it was an essential journey😜. I have to say i agree with everything you say gentleman, my bike makes me feel so good like no other I’ve ever owned. I really like this classic version. That exhaust line looks so much better. The only enhancement I would need would be a more authoritative exhaust note 👍
Nice review! After many years of owning GSAs for 10 years or so, I decided to do something different, called my dealer, and traded my 2019 GSA R1250 for the R18 Classic. Drove it back home 60 miles from NYC to the countryside in cold driving rain (didn't check the weather lol) but with a smile on my face. I'm going to change the seats for an aftermarket thicker one to have a slightly higher riding position and a backrest for my wife.
Well said. I also despise the popular video shots currently where the speaker is talking but the camera angle is on the side of their head. Just speak TO the camera and cut out the useless music.
As a squid, when I first looked at BMWs, I thought the engines were ridiculous. But, the more I look, the more I love the design, and now I think it’s perhaps the most beautiful around.
Awesome bike, great video! You captured the essence of riding and living with the R18 perfectly. Fantastic review, gents. You made me long to experience it for myself.
I've been riding boxer engines for about 15 years now, but the comparison with a horse and its muscles is definitely the best I came across. Great video, has all it needs.
You just sold it to me. Great review indeed. But I'm really looking forward to the next video which you mentioned where you are going to do a side-by-side comparison to HD Heritage Classic. I know you have a ton of experience with that motorcycle and I enjoyed the videos you made with it.
Yep. All about the character and experience. Subtle changes of this classic completes the look. The smaller fatter front wheel is the business. Much classier than the Triumph Rocket. Great review 👍
Great review guys. Currently own a triumph scrambler 1200 and Suzuki dr650, looking to add a cruiser to the stable and this has really caught my eye! Such a unique take on the classic tourer. Thanks for such an honest and detailed review.
This is a motorcycle people are either going to love or hate. I’m not in the love it camp. It has potential, but those exhaust jugs are bloody horrendous. Once again, excellent review. I can’t wait to see your Trident review.
I just love these guys. Good honest & knowledgeable reviews with passion for the sport. I see many videos but always wait to hear what Darcy & the old man have to say. Let’s not forget the ambiance of their location which is perfect. Cheers 👌
Beautiful beautiful review. Excellent. The bike, is a newborn classic, we will see her for a long time without any major change. Thanks a lot for that video.
Just saw this at the local dealer. Looks much better in person. Very comfortable riding position (I am 6'1). The design makes you feel that it's a collectors item but after sitting on it I can say it's as practical as the HD baggers or Indians.
I get that some people prefer mids. That said, my knees are starting to stiffen up and ache just looking at it. It's the fact that the engine is physically in the way...it's blocking you in. Maybe it's some variant of OCD or something at work in my brain, but I couldn't get past having the cylinders in my way like that. "Claustrophobic" probably isn't the right word, but it's something like that.
Definitely the classic, a big improvement over the standard . Incredible that a fuel gauge hasn’t been included on a superb tourer. Hopefully it has a decent lean angle and doesn’t scrape too easily.
Spot on review and definitely agree with the riding a horse comparison. Lots of torque ready to go on cue. I dry much enjoy hopping on my R18 and getting her out for a ride. Cheers
I want this bike, I just got my motorcycle license and have been enjoying my Harley sportster 1200. I've been told it's a big bike to learn on but it's the only bike I've ever been on
Haha time to rewatch dukes of hazzard! We are doing a comparison video between this and the heritage classic next week! We’ll talk about some other models in that video too.
Looks great, BMW makes great bikes. I settled for a H-D Sports Glide when turning fifty, which I would assume is the equivalent to this BMW model . It’s a great concept and comfortable as well! But a quick check of the prices reveals that the BMW is almost 10000€ more expensive than the already expensive H-D Sport Glide and that’s a a comfort option to consider if you’re in for a more relaxing ride!
Well done... as a HD Heritage Classic owner, really looking forward to your comparison. I'd love to hear if you really would be comfortable over the course of a 7 hour ride without the ability to stretch out....
Just purchased the Classic due in large part to your reviews. I tried the Fat Bob which I absolutely loved the look of but to be honest the handling quite scared me. The Classic by comparison was a dream. Only worry now is slow speed manoeuvres which will hopefully improve with time in the saddle.
Smart to get the Valkyrie - better reliability, better seat, better motor, less vibration, and it doesn’t drag pegs dangerously in moderate turns. The BMW windscreen also is poorly designed.
Indeed I did - Not disappointed at all in fact my Rebel 1100 is now for sale. about 1000k's on it now. I am seeing why big cruisers are so popular, it is bit of a lump at slow work and lane splitting might be a lot less common than on the Honda. But it is way more tactile than the Honda and looks like a bit of rolling art, and certainly not sterile.
Nicely done. I, also, test rode one of the early models late last summer. I was thoroughly impressed with the power delivery, the substantial feel, and the solid front end. My wife and I own a 1964 R60/2. We have owned other Boxer bikes, too. The styling on this R18 is spot on. Styling cues from several different classic Boxers. I, currently, own and ride a Road King as well as a King Pin. This R18 would be a bike that I would consider owning if/when it becomes time for me to downsize to just one large cruiser. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts when comparing this to the Heritage.
I have 2 more weeks to wait before mine arrives from the factory.. plus all new riding gear for a new bike..As you can imagine, im crazy excited.. @@MrDarcy-OlMan New York Port Authority still has my bike since it arrived from Germany. My dealer says 7 to 30 days and that was a week ago...going bonkers
Alright Ol Man, I picked it up from the dealership yesterday morning. It was detained in the Port Authority longer than expected. 294 highway miles in less than 24 hours. I needed this time, and more, just becoming familiar with the bike's characteristics. It is massive in size and torque. It is almost surreal to look down and see that GIANT boxer below your knees. It's heavy, real heavy so I am staying out of the twisty backroads for a bit longer. Although the weight disappears while on the highways, I'll give it a bit more saddle time before I start throwing it around tight corners.
@@MrDarcy-OlMan So 50 days after receiving my Classic and I am still amazed with this machine. I've gotten used to the feel and characteristics by now. 2231 miles of everything from interstate, to crazy mountain two lane twistys. I am glad the floorboards have springs and slider caps because I threw sparks through many corners making my friends jealous. Love it. I get questions about my bike all the time. Gas stations, stop lights, even coming out of restaurants. Even my group of riding friends are asking questions about aspects. Next weekend , my dealer will have the semi-truck full of test bikes to ride. I work that day so I cant go but some in my regular riding group are talking about it. Most of them are Harley riders so it seems hard for them to admit, but they are going. We will see... Yesterday was 376 miles of exploration down to the National park of Cumberland Falls. The river is a natural dividing line between the states of Kentucky and Virginia. It was a stunning ride through the forest as the leaves are starting to change color with the fall weather and the mountains kept every turn interesting. You said it makes you ride a certain way, and you were right. It's made me a better rider.
Very informative video. It certainly looks the ideal long distance cruiser, but I would pick the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic, if I had that kind of money though.....just on looks alone😁
I get the sense you are considering handing in your Heritage for an R18. Is that the case? I look forward to a review of the Indian Chief Dark Horse. That is the one cruiser I would consider over the original! Keep up your amazing work!
G’day guys , from Australia, I’ll be looking out for the comparison of the Heritage and the r18 , I will be buying one or the other in the next 12 months. Good job reviewing 👍👍👍
My heart says Harley as I’m a member of the Harley Davidson Riders Club of Great Britain but whilst the Heritage Classic is great, the provision of Reverse Gear on the BMW really is a game-changer for anyone who has struggled to back-up a big & heavy bike! Baker Transmissions do make a reverse-gear for Harley’s but it’s a large additional cost. HD really have needed a reverse on their big bikes for years. I think BMW have given HD a wake up call! I also like the modes but it’s a pain that there’s no fuel gauge. I always carry a spare gallon of fuel, & on the very customisable HD’s fitting a container is no problem. On paper the BMW is a likely winner but it’s not a HD! Where HD score is their riders are one huge Worldwide group all on bikes with a similar familiar look & sound. Go anywhere on a HD & riders have something in common & stories to tell. This big boxer BMW has to carve a niche for itself as it’s only similar riding buddies will be on old vintage airhead BMW’s. I used to own an old air-cooled BMW R100S, & at a BMW rally just didn’t fit in with a field full of GS off-road riders! Pre-covid, from 1989, I’ve attended Daytona Bike Week each March, flying over for 2-weeks riding a big-twin HD in the Florida Sun with well over 100,000 other riders on similar machines. What a wonderful time we’ve had. On occasion I’ve spent time with BMW riders up at the Volusia County Campsite but they are a mere handful compared to the HD presence. I see the R18 over in the US as a point of interest but HD will remain dominant. On a cross State ride sitting feet forwards is very comfortable & I’ll explore adding a reverse to my next HD.
@@nickrichardson7451 You make very valid points. Harley Davidson can (should) learn a lot from the R 18. We are pitching the two bikes together today and there’s some interesting points to cover
Is there a passenger backrest and a larger windscreen option? My other question is - are the spoked rims tubeless by any chance? The lack of a fuel gauge takes me back to when we used the tripmeter to determine when we needed to gas up. Of course back then the engine would start to stumble and we knew we had to manually switch over to reserve. My interest in this bike is that it is very retro, lower and lighter (100lbs) than my Harley and is not festooned with every gadget known to man and would be like a holiday to ride without all that tech. Your video was excellent and does make me want to look into this bike further.
Check BMW Motorrad's website for accessories because they're adding to them all the time. Have you seen our lates video revealing that we bought an R18? It's simply THE best cruiser out there we think, and yes its not overly tech but just enough with 3 modes and so simple
I love boxers. have 3 R1100 in my shed. The R18 is awesome works very well at higher speeds.found it a hard bike to ride slow maybe due to quiet exhaust note. Sweeping corners felt like a bullet train. Lack of forward controls has me unfortunately leaning toward HD. Sports Glide at first but ended up ordering a Fat Bob. For me great comfort better and better ground clearance and mean attitude to tackle twisty Tasmanian tracks. R18 be my wife. Fat Bob be my Daisy Duke Jessica Simpson . Thx for all your reviews.
Awesome review as usual, covered a lot different perspective, nice getting back your cam fix, now we can have more video from u guys, I agree this is one of the best bikes for tall riders as the wheelbase it’s pretty stretch, however I find the pegs position can be a bit forward to look cooler, btw I saw you riding with your legs on top of the boxer engine, I haven’t try this version yet, did they come with a heat resistant panel on top or you just ride it for fun awhile in such position? Also there is a new member on your channel for 5f10, warm welcome ❤️ keep up the great work mate!
Truly gorgeous bike with a regal presence. No pictures or video can do the R18 justice. Only other one I can think of this beautiful is the Moto Guzzi California 1400. A German and Italian beauty
That's ok, had one and didn't bond with it. This is a totally different singer, whew we.. been riding 50 years and this machina rocks, hard to express until you strap her on. Brings back what riding is perfectly. Enjoy all the moments, from start to finish.
Glad to see BMW on the market again personally don't care how many years you have been riding there is always tip over issues those jugs scare me too. Just my opinion
great video with nice drone footage well done! I was just wondering of you plan on doing any faired sports bikes as I haven't seen one on your channel before. Would love a video on a ninja 400 or R6, something along those lines. cheers!

You'll never have to worry about MC Clubs in the USA and 1%er or being from another club if wearing a leather vest on this bike, with no colors or patches. The look and the exhaust sound are quite distinguishing.
I was eagerly awaiting this review, and wasn't disappointed by your take, comprehensive as ever. Now, should I pull the trigger on the Heritage or R18 Classic, guessing higher quality BMW parts but less noise than the Harley and options for extra power?
Thanks buddy. It really is hard and basically comes down to which one has the character you prefer: like a lion or tiger, or curry or Chinese. We will go into detail on some comparisons in next weeks video!

@@Under-the-Helmet excellent. It makes you ride a certain way, and it doesn’t encourage you to be mental in the corners 👍🏼👍🏼
You guys are great, just discovered the channel. Thanks for the content
Thanks Peter! Glad you found us 👊🏼
Very informative video. It certainly looks the ideal long distance cruiser, but I would pick the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic, if I had that kind of money though.....just on looks alone😁
Thanks buddy. You’ll definitely want to see our comparison video coming up next Monday!
Love your reviews, amazing bike! Cheers to Mr Darcy and the Old Man.
Thanks Felipe 💯👍🏼
Thank for this lad - I'm picking mine up next week!
Awesome!!
I get the sense you are considering handing in your Heritage for an R18. Is that the case? I look forward to a review of the Indian Chief Dark Horse. That is the one cruiser I would consider over the original! Keep up your amazing work!
No I’m keeping the Heritage Classic. Thanks buddy 👍🏼
G’day guys , from Australia,
I’ll be looking out for the comparison of the Heritage and the r18 , I will be buying one or the other in the next 12 months.
Good job reviewing 👍👍👍
Thanks buddy! OK stay tuned for the next video! 👍🏼
The horse analogy is great! Some poetic minds you guys have ;-P
Thanks buddy! 🐎
Thanks guys. Great job.
Thanks buddy 💯
Thanks for your comment bro! We like your choice of daisy Duke!
Excellent review! Can’t wait to see the comparison with the HD Heritage Classic. And hopefully it’s the 114, making the 2 almost even.
Thanks Andy! Yes we shall see!
Thanks Kay; welcome aboard! BMW sell a shield/footrest to go over the cylinders. 👍🏼👍🏼
another great review guys!
Thanks buddy 👍🏼
Thank you for a fab review. I( have the 1st edition and trying to source a windshield, which is a must for me. Any recommendations as to a supplier?
Thanks buddy. Can’t you get one from BMW Motorrad?
Ooohh I almost forgot-Great review again!
Thanks my friend 👍🏼
Truly gorgeous bike with a regal presence. No pictures or video can do the R18 justice. Only other one I can think of this beautiful is the Moto Guzzi California 1400. A German and Italian beauty
Great video and fantastic bike!! Love it, but I'll stick with my 114 heritage classic! 👍🍺
Thanks Eric! We’re looking forward to pitching the Heritage Classic against the R 18
That's ok, had one and didn't bond with it. This is a totally different singer, whew we.. been riding 50 years and this machina rocks, hard to express until you strap her on. Brings back what riding is perfectly. Enjoy all the moments, from start to finish.
@@stevensullivan5287 well put Steven 👍🏼👍🏼
R18 is so beautiful
Glad to see BMW on the market again personally don't care how many years you have been riding there is always tip over issues those jugs scare me too. Just my opinion
No problem Jim
great video as always🤩
Thanks very much!
great video with nice drone footage well done! I was just wondering of you plan on doing any faired sports bikes as I haven't seen one on your channel before. Would love a video on a ninja 400 or R6, something along those lines. cheers!
Thanks buddy. Yes if we can get hold of them. We get what we can as and when it’s available 👍🏼
Absolutely the best team reviewing motorcycles there is.I can see”the ole man” (I’m sure I’ve got some years on him😅)owning this.Does it have a quick release screen?I must ride one soon. Thanks fellas. You’re the best.👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks very much indeed. Forward wind to our recent videos to find out!
I think if I remember correctly the screen detaches with a few screws

Excellent.Thank you.
another fantastic review.
Thanks buddy 💯
@@MrDarcy-OlMan I think with a slip on it would be ace, it's the noise that the Harley gives....
You guys are awesome. Love your work.
Cool to see an „american“ gentleman ;-)
Thanks buddy! We’re actually English 👍🏼
Nice review boys

What an odd spot for a light.
Great review. Not the biggest fan of cruisers, though I always enjoy seeing what you two have to say about the bikes you get a chance to test out.
It’s just a narrow old street and not quite wide enough for two way traffic. Thanks Susan 💯
Awesome video guys! I really love the look of this bike 👍
Thanks buddy! Yes we do too 👍🏼
It's still got that ridiculous 200mph speedo. Thought they would have addressed that for the UK and US markets. Good review BTW 👍
Thanks buddy. Yes perhaps they could have
A beautiful and magnificent piece of machinery
That’s for sure 💯
@@MrDarcy-OlMan I have an R18 first edition so I have to say that … haha but seriously I cannot get enough time riding my R18 and the smile just gets bigger as I enjoy it more and more and this is after over 40 years of riding and many different bikes 😎
@@kellyco4139 absolutely! I can’t wait to get out on mine, as soon as the weather improves
Yeah, the Old Man is buying one soon. Looks nice next to his Heritage Classic.
If we had the cash!
@@MrDarcy-OlMan Sell the Heritage :) Another great vid btw!
