Further thoughts which didn't make it into the script:
    * Aim Assist can also blur the line between those who aren't and are cheating, further adding to the corruption of the game spirit.
In an environment where people's ability are their own and clearly more variable and error-prone, those who are cheating or suspiciously accurate can be spotted easier.
Conversely, if the person is just really exceptional, then they will stand out and be admired/respected/feared for that ability as they naturally should be.
    * "Contractors Showdown has bullet travel! The aim assist will actually get in a player's way! LMAO video invalid git gud scrub, u jus salty an suck :D"
Yes, it can sometimes work against you at longer ranges where needing to lead the target means fighting against the aim assist trying to stick to and track the target.
But overall I think it is still a net advantage, particularly for lesser skilled aimers, due to how the aim point significantly stabilises in a radius near the enemy player, still allowing you to smoothly track and lead them with great help, alongside the jank of being able to detect them through walls sometimes.
    * I carelessly used the word 'arbitrary' in some cases, not fully understanding its meaning. Sorry about that, will be more careful going forward.
    * In retrospect I realise I didn't elaborate enough on how the trend of aim assist would affect the development and end gameplay of future VR shooters if it becomes normalised.
On top of the consequences I say in the script, I believe it would push future VR shooter design to further lean away from the natural usage of motion controls, and even more towards ill-suited long-worn out flat screen crap and the mindsets which accompany that.
EXTRA MESSAGE FOR VIRTUE SIGNALING ACCESSIBILITY CULT BRAIN ROT COMMENTERS:
"What about people who shake violently and want to play VR!? Or can't move their shoulders!!? Or arms!?!? Or they don't have any arms?!?
They and EEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVERRRRRYYYYYONE should be able to participate in everything in the same way no matter what!!"
You live in a delusional internet bubble firmly divorced from reality. Go out into the real world for a while and see how long that naïve fanciful low hanging fruit virtue signal DOESN'T last, and how entitled, condescending, selfish and stifling to all creativity and progress your delusional faux empathy is.
I will not respond to or take seriously your lazy, thoughtless, cheap appeal to toxic empathy, and your comment will likely be deleted if it's the usual sanctimonious rant which has no substance or originality.

@user-xc4bf5qd2s Thank you, and yeah I completely agree I messed up not verbally painting a picture of how things could be if it were normalised as it would help drive the point home very much. I’m surprised I missed mentioning that as it seems like such an obvious and important capstone. If I ever have a chance to remake/remaster any of my content with the help of properly skilled editors so I can focus on the writing and voice over, I’ll be sure to fix it.

Half-Life: Alyx had it figured out.
It was literally designed as baby's first VR game, and yet doesn't have aim assist to coddle the player's ego. Instead, the maps' combat sections are designed to be close-quarters so that it's naturally easier to hit. Close engagements also put more emphasis on how you position your physical body around obstacles, and feels a lot more personal when you're right up to the enemy, which what VR is best at.
It's such an elegant solution, and they figured it out 4 years ago.

  • @nekrovulpes
    @nekrovulpes 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Aim assist is the wrong solution*, but I think VR definitely needs some kind of input smoothing. It's one of the most annoying things in VR for me when a shooting game stops being shooting, and starts being simply fighting the shaky, jittery reticle. A real gun has weight that steadies your hand, and not just that, but you grip a gun very differently than a controller. There needs to be accommodation for that.
*For multiplayer games, at least. There are cases where I think it's fine because it is essentially an intended game mechanic. Look at a game like Pistol Whip, where's it's about fast shooting and physically moving to doge bullets, not precise aim. It's just flat out more fun with aim assist enabled, because it's so much more needlessly difficult without.

This is something i love about Pavlov is how good it feels to hit a headshot from far away. Yes there is virtual stock but no aim assist or other help than skill and maybe luck plus the satisfying headshot sound. I said Pavlov since its the main shooter i play but should be accurate for other non aim assist games. Pavlov when starting was brutal as it felt like people where aimbotting and i was terrible but after 100 hours and now that i can hit shots better it feels much more grounded and fun now that i have gotten better and can win fights more often.

Virtual Stock is fine as it approximates the stability a real stock would give you. That third point of contact helps a ton.

Excellent video as always. It's weird that these otherwise obvious behavioral side effects of essentially built in cheating takes any pride out of a win, and any personal growth out of gameplay, so there is no real point in playing since victory is tainted, and losing makes you wonder if you got aim-botted.

I’ve been waiting anxiously to play this with PSVR2 once the PC cable finally comes out but I didn’t even know that it had aim assist. I will probably still get it but I am however very sad that this is in the game. I completely agree that it should not be in a competitive VR shooter as it somewhat defeats the entire purpose of it. It was the biggest issue I had in Firewall Ultra which was much more flagrant with it and basically snapping the aim directly to where you’re looking by pressing the left trigger but and it looks like it’s rearing it’s ugly head again in this game as well even though I bit more subtle with it. Still any of this garbage shouldn’t be in VR PvP shooters at all.

I have long observed this unfortunate reality in modern FPS games. With the rise of crossplay in PC games, I yearn for the games of yesteryear where I could be terrible but tangibly feel myself improving, and where a lobby could consist of good and bad players alike.
Now, algorithms keep players forever running on a matchmaking treadmill where they can never get ahead or behind, and never feel themselves improving, and where you can't tell if a player is using an actual aimbot from across the map or a console crossplayer is using auto aim to compensate for the inability to aim.
I miss the competition. I don't even want to play modern FPS games with how artificial it is.

There is also counter-play to deal with them once you know how they work.
The aim assist in Showdown doesn't help with leading shots, only with steadying on the target. It is strictly to help normal and casual players feel like they are doing well, which will spread the word of VR and get more eyes on it. It is a temporary necessity. Every VR game has some form of aim assist. Whether it is pop1 motion damping, VAIL weapon smoothing, or even using V-stock in the first place.

Great deep dive that definitely helps demystify aim assist in games! I agree with everything when considering players who are not aware of what aim assist is doing for them. Though I have a few points that I would debate:
    * Precise and slow aim is not objectively better aim than imprecise and fast aim. That's true if you are only measuring precision but in the context of a fire-fight, speed can't be left out of the equation. I think this comes down to the feel that the game is trying to achieve. More aim assist rewards speed more and less aim assist rewards precision more. Increasing aim assist because you want your game to play faster doesn't seem objectively worse to me, but it's totally fair to have an opinion like that.
    * Aim assist narrows the skill gap. Totally true if neither player is aware of the presence of aim assist. I would actually say the opposite is true if only some players understand the aim assist and how to use it for maximum benefit. In your example where aim assist is tracking targets through walls, the player that knows about that and uses it to know when their target is going to expose themselves would give them a significant advantage over the low skill player who doesn't know that is even possible. Or just simply knowing that the game has generous aim assist so you should try to fire faster even if you have to sacrifice precision. I don't think this is a healthy way to widen the skill gap, but I wouldn't argue that the skill gap is always narrower with aim assist.
    * All of this applies to aim assist as a setting or global behavior but I don't think player experience is affected the same way when aim assist is tied to in-game items. If it's known that X gun or scope has a high degree of aim assist, players would consider it a better gun just by their success rate regardless of their knowledge of what aim assist is doing for them. If that item is difficult to acquire or expensive, maybe the improved performance is justifiable. Some of your examples are from Destiny which needs a lot of guns for players to pursue. They accomplish that with randomized characteristics including some that affect aim assist. For example, there is one that increases your aim assist as your health decreases. That may mean that the player with that weapon trait will beat a player of equal skill without that trait, but the losing player could turn that around by increasing their skill, acquiring a weapon with that trait, or playing into their own weapon traits better.
Again, I'll 1000% agree that aim assist in VR has to be considered completely differently from console aim assist because the same features will affect feel differently when you change the input medium that significantly.

I always thougt that maybe the aim assists plays into the fast paced arcade style the game is going for. Take away aim assist and it becomes more of a military Sim and the casual player who doesn't play that often wouldn't have as much fun. I get the concept of a " Get Good" but for a game that doesn't have a huge player base i can see why the devs made the decision.

CM has some good history in VR game development. Keep in mind the OG contractors has been out for several years. The were one of the first if not the first to enable a stock calibration, open up to modding community (Pavlov may have been first) and develop a good looking VR FPS. @shadknight3562 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The difference isn't between platforms, it's between having aim assist turned on or off, console usually has aim assist because they only have a few inches to work with, PC could have aim assist but most times it doesn't since they expect you to have more space. In vr, unless you're using the sticks to aim, you shouldn't need aim assist, what the video is getting at is that aim assist in vr will hinder the good players while rewarding the bad ones.

I recently bought Guardians Frontline (think helldivers meets halo) and my goodness the aim asist is egregious in that game. You point the gun in the general direction of a bug and it'll die. Combine that with the fact that the guns have 0 phantom weight so they are far from stabilized. I basicly run around dual wielding machine guns cus there not much benefit to using sights. I still like the game tho its really fun.

I’ve played well over 20 hours of Contractors Showdown, am in their Discord, I live stream all my gameplay while talking to viewers and played with official Showdown content creators and I had NO clue this was going on. This should be made widely known. It seems to me that I’ll be utilizing the scope stabilization and turning the number above 6. The times I’ve tried using it was at a level 2 and it sure as hell wasn’t anything like what was shown in the video.
Good to know why kills and knocks and gunplay have seemed off since first playing and still to this day. Not to mention the players are bullet sponges in this game. Can hit somebody with 10 bullets and not kill the person. I don’t like battle royal titles but Showdown is a lot of fun with others but knowing this feature is aim assist, may change that. Now time to enable scope stabilization and see how it changes my K/D ratio and fun…

The devs just didn't tell you they added it :-) And optics are so rarely used in Contractors that I don't think many have noticed, or care. And if that's in the game, just like it is more so in Showdown, then that opens the door to speculation of what else might be secretly assisting our aim, perhaps a little bullet magnetism is happening too...🤷‍♂

I mean, youre probably right. But i have a very warm relationship with aim assist. I dont invest as much time into videogames as other people, even less with vr since im a weak little skeleton man. But i have never IN MY LIFE been matched with someone of equal skill in ANY videogame ive played.
It seems my skill level is in a perfect goldilocks zone of mediocrity that results in every confrontation being either trivial or oppressively difficult. My playstyle has evolved into cowering in corners and sneaking around, dying instantly if anyone gets a whiff of my position since every other player has the aim and precision of an intercontinental ballistic missile. And when i do get a lesser skilled player to play against i end up feeling bad for killing them so easily.
Perhaps this is an issue with me. After all, i believe if i achieved something it was easy, or the other player was playing really poorly. and if someone else achieved something it was because they were skilled, because from my perspective it was all effortless for them. I just cant shake it, its in my DNA. Aim assist does have a place however, at least in games where the enjoyment doesn't come solely from measuring skill. These days the only thing that seems to matter is your skill, so i understand the aversion to aim assist. Not saying it should be in every game either, that would ruin something like counter strike. Its just. there is a market for it. people who dont understand the sigma skill grindset like me.

It’s like trying to play COD or Apex Legends like a milsim, you gotta follow how the game is designed or you take Ls. If you refuse to accept that and want crutches like aim assist then that’s on you and any time you play, you’ll never get better. It’s really not difficult to get good at VR.

My point was if i ever got into a fair 1v1 i would usually get instagibbed by the other player because they're a meat based aimbot. My playstyle has devolved into quickly dipping between cover or blindspots, then attacking from behind. That's my go to strat for titanfall 2, wall run or grapple somewhere unexpected, then ambush. Its the only way i can get a kill on a good player.
My problem is the skill gradient for these guys is totally busted, i never get a 1v1 that feels like we both couldve lost. So i guess i should just take the L and git good like you suggest. Why didnt i think of that?

While Aim Assist is a valid concern for sure, it is hard to argue it can be 'unfair' if everyone has access to it. I never considered controller Halo matches unfair even if they had some aim assist tied to the input method, so I don't see a difference with VR.
My real concern does come into the flattening of player skill differences, but even then some minimal level is perfectly acceptable. It just seems like Contractors over-tuned a bit.
TL;DR I disagree this is 'currently' a big problem, but caution is important in this area to prevent it becoming a major problem in the future.

    Im fine with this
Casual shooters can exist, there are many many competitive shooters without this that can be enjoyed by the competitive market.
Casual players this way are not subject to the grinding tedium of being killed by 10k hour VR champs with VRChat GFs before seeing improvement or more likely quitting.
To say all competition is removed by aim assist is a little deceiving, you're distilling every part of the gameplay to a theoretical one on one where every factor is the same (guns, health etc) and the only deciding factor is the aim assist. Games are a measure of strategy as much as they are reflexes and good strategy in a battle royale can help win engagements (sometimes before the enemy even knows you're there) which is why the genre gained popularity all those years ago.
To make an appeal to emotion with the hypothetical where both players become friends because their mags are empty is extremely cringe and probably shouldn't have been included in the script. I understand why you included it, but it's too much of a reach. Most players would simply reload and shoot them anyway, ending the engagement.
At the end of the day whether you're using a controller, mouse, quest or index knuckles a computer is aiming for you, it is translating the most input it can get and thats as much as can be expected of it which for some people isn't enough for fun experience.
People don't want to be in VR for hours on end to git gud. People have emails to answer, calls to take, families to interact with. You cant do any of this without much difficulty in VR.
Let's not make an already difficult to introduce platform to regular people, even more exclusive. If the only place people can get casuao VR is Meta Horizons or some shit, zuckerberg wins.

    • @tea.edits.ae.
      @tea.edits.ae. 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Nah this is cap, you can easily get good at VR shooters with 5-10 hours of practice of the right thing. It’s just a massive lack of effort on the casual playerbase department. The way a battle royale has always been setup is that the best players win, so any BR you play whether it be on PC or VR, if you don’t put any effort in, you lose, that’s what makes them so rewarding when you do win because you know you’ve earned it, this aim assist just defeats the point of all of that, on a medium that quite frankly doesn’t need it because the controls are so intuitive and seamless.

    • @MrVRVoice

“ you're distilling every part of the gameplay to a theoretical one on one where every factor is the same (guns, health etc) and the only deciding factor is the aim assist”
-_- No I’m not. Ugh, another boring, albeit, well-written rebuttal which looks decent on the surface but is just lazily taking points of the discussion to stupid extremes and then arguing against those extremes to prove your point.
“People don't want to be in VR for hours on end to git gud”.
What?? What are you implying by arguing this in relation to what I said? Are you also implying that anything without aim assist is not casual, or that players don’t care to apply themselves to the gameplay of the game they’ve chosen?
I don’t understand what you are basing this kind of response from.
“At the end of the day whether you're using a controller, mouse, quest or index knuckles a computer is aiming for you, it is translating the most input it can get and thats as much as can be expected of it which for some people isn't enough for fun experience.”
…what??? So because, our inputs are being translated…through a device…into a computer…this means…that we must accept it removing certain agencies from the player…because…???
I already pointed out why aim assist came to be from input limitations of controllers, limitations which are, provably, no longer a factor with motion control tracking in VR with the solutions already in place. So…what are you trying to press on with this paragraph exactly?
“Games are a measure of strategy as much as they are reflexes and good strategy in a battle royale can help win engagements (sometimes before the enemy even knows you're there) which is why the genre gained popularity all those years ago.”
Thanks, I had no idea that other elements beyond pointing and shooting contributed to one’s success. I clearly must come across as a guy who wouldn’t ever consider those things.
You’re not wrong, obviously, but the inclusion of unnecessary artificial assists when it comes down to the nitty gritty of combat can still sabotage the outcome of those other factors depending on the game design and, again, innumerable variables in play.
So yeah…not sure what else to say except repeat points from the video, as most of what you’re rebuking is your own straw-manning. “Causal shooters can exist,” -_- Implying I am against them from the get-go to set up your victory lap rebuke. So insincere, boring and tiresome.
