    Wow, thank you so much for this! I am planning a koi pond but have been hesitant at the price of skimmers - $400 for a bucket?!?! and was totally confused by other DIY skimmers I have seen on youtube and elsewhere - till I saw this video! You made it so clear and concise and now I am pretty confident I can do this myself and hook it up to my skippy filters! will be buying your instructions for sure.

    You are truly brilliant. I'm in the process of setting up my very first DIY pond. It's about 16'x16' average 3feet 4 and a half at it's deepest your videos have been an inspiration since before I broke ground. I thank you for what you do.

    Great video. Better than store bought. The auto fill is what I am going to do to mine also. Plus, it will be below my shed. I will install another gutter and spout (with a screen) to let rainwater help keep it full. Tin roof.

    Thanks Wrighty! I am new to this and learning fast. This is exactly what I was looking for!
    Last year put in french drains in the top end of the garden (the garden office is now inplace), down the sides (we are on the side of the hill) and from the water captured under the inground trampoline (don't ask!). The output is not connected to anywhere so when it rains, the garden takes some (suffering from hard clay) and the rest, well. Anyway, started to design a pondless/rill and want the french drain to feed into it. Issue is capturing any crap. This is our solution! The next problem is making it :)

    From America, unfortunately, I apologise for our country first, lol
    You got sum good skills there and a nice set up... I'm in the process of building my second earth home out of tires and sand bags, I'm incorporating a massive pond system for the whole property that connects indoor and outdoor ponds, it hasn't been done, or at least no one has shared,
    I'll have year round indoor grow beds and year round work composting so it's my idea to make my pond system year round using thermal mass to combat winter's...
    You've giving me sum good knowledge on DIY projects, glad people out there like us...

    That's great, nice work..... you could stick an overflow on the side near the top where you'd like the water level to max out at, that way rain won't effect the level of the pond. I've diverted mine down a dry river bed to my fence line, I even put in a couple collection pools in that the birds love to bath in

    • @Wrighty

    So Wrighty, you have a wonderful scenic venue between the Parasol topped Plaza and the pond area. It is so beautiful.
    This video was very well protrayed, narrated and photographed.You have given me some interesting ideas.One point I wondered about is that you placed the filter on solid ground, so it didn't move around or go up and down with the water level.My (smaller pond that yours with goldfish) water level goes up an down a few inches depending on the weather temperature.Would it be better to have the filter floating, so it is always at the affective height?Many thanks again. I will now visit your website.
    Multi regards.

    Thanks Wrighty nice set up , i just wanted to the water out let part and the work of the pump, what is the water level of the pond lesser than the skimmer inlet and pump keeps on pumping all the water out of the tub? is that good for the pump, and also the speed of the water inlet and pump out let has to be the same, i.e. if the pump keep on removing faster that the water in speed what will happen, can you explain around this matter please.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Favaz, The weir on the skimmer wants to be about 1 inch below the pond water level. If your pump starts to empty the skimmer you can raise the water level of the pond slightly or make the hole for the weir larger. Terry.

  • @harrychung433
    @harrychung433 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for another fine video, Terry. Was beginning to wonder if the wier cut into the inner band or not. Saw that is did not till later on there. So did you have to change the strainer size or happy with the first choice? Any particalur reason for clear plexi for the shelf? But most of all, where did you fine that round hole? All mine look like a someone ran them and stomped on them.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harry Chung Hi Harry, and thank you. The weir is just a fraction above the clear perspex and there is no particular reason for the clear perspex, anything similar will do the job. I must admit it was easier to cut the shape of the tub out as I just laid it on top of the tub and I could see the tub to draw the shape and get a good fit.
      The smaller basket is working really well so not changing it at the moment.
      It's now been running 3 days 24/7 and no problems yet m8.
      Terry.

    Mr. Wrighty very nice design may question is. The water doesn't run away from the pond where you installed meaning losing water to the ground.

    • @Wrighty

      Hi Hector, I'm not sure I fully understand the question. The only water I lose is through evaporation and it's toped up by the skimmer. Terry

      Hi mate, The ballcock is an auto pond top up. I have to say, my koi never bothered trying to get in it, but if they do, there's nothing in there to hurt them. Just to let you know, I did fit a bigger basket, as this one did fill quite quickly. Terry.

    This video is great good ideas but the scum is just getting sucked threw the basket into to pump & back into the pond? And another question the debris just seem to be spinning around so soon as water levels get slightly higher there just going to be swilling round till they finally end up back in the pond? Not a in bad comment by far I'm just wondering what's what can u help me out as this looked brilliant in till I seen it doing this

    how did you come about with making sure the pond liner lines up with the skimmers opening and not leaking water into the ground?

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Sealant is put around the hole for the weir. The pond liner is then placed up the front of the skimmer weir onto the sealer. It's then fixed with the fixing bracket shown in the video. If you want to see one fitted, take a look at ThePondDigger's video on how to fit a skimmer. Terry.

    Interesting in your auto top up system - is this connected to a normal hose pipe? Any issues with chlorine in the water you're using to top it up with?

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe, Yes it is topped up using a hose pipe from the tap. But as it will only be a trickle it won't matter. The tap water is mixed with the pond water in the skimmer, which is turning over all the time and returning to the pond. This isn't topping up 24/7, only when the water level drops. Terry.
