    Good point on why the stick jigs are the way they are. I have seen multiple pros do trimming and all have a different preference. It usually is like you said based on desired profile and fall rate. Excellent information and insight into why and how you trim jigs. Thanks for your efforts

    Matt, I went fishing today with the goal of really getting more comfortable with a jig. I lost all 3 of my bites, but I am much more comfortable with a jig now. I also figured out things I like and didn't like about the couple of jigs I fished today. I was trimming them on the water a lot based on this video too. I think it really helped!

    Thanks for all the useful tips Matt. Your tips are so straight forward and honest. I also love that you are a northern angler. Being from Minnesota, your experience is more relevant to me. You have moved to the top of my watch list. Good luck out there.

    I started trimming my skirts and weed guards after watching some of randy blaukats videos. absolute night and day difference in the amount of action my trailers have, the amount of bites and the amount of fish i land. trimming that skirt to maximize the trailer action is absolutely critical!

    It's so easy when you first start modifying jigs to get a little cut crazy and trim too much skirt off- I've got a couple I just ruined. Well, maybe not ruined but- they're definitely more finesse now.

    Thanks for doing a video on this topic, Matt. I used to miss a lot of fish because I didn't know how to trim my jigs and so I left them untrimmed. That's why I asked you if you could do a video on this topic --- because not too many videos out there discuss it. Now, I wonder if you also trim your chatterbait skirts? Another topic? Hmmmm.....

    i prefer compact jigs period for all times of the year. as my luck would have it they seem to get the same big bites of a larger profile, plus i land more on them during the summer months. the weed guard tip is clutch...i'd always thin at the nose end never giving it a second thought, your method makes more sense.

    I’ve found that cutting mine off at an angle works well for me in thicker wood and bush cover. If I want more of a hair trigger so to speak, I’ll cut my longer portion of the angle (bottom) right at the top of the hook when compressed. This leaves the top of the angle (shortest) the stiffest so that it still provides protection when climbing limbs or over stumps.

    small wire cutters allow for precise removal of weed guard. cut very close to head and exact amount of strands.

    I've been losing lots of fish throwing a swim jig on my MH Daiwa Rebellion. The reel has 16lb fluoro and I think the bit of stretch in the line and my hook setting technique are a poor match. No problems throwing the same jigs on braid, so I'm going to try thinning my weed guard.

    I need to start doing this, thanks for the tip. I've always just fished jigs straight out of the package and looking back know I have missed some good fish because of it. Just curious, do you ever do any trimming or skirt mods on spinnerbaits and chatterbaits? I've seen plenty of people talk about modifying jig skirts but not the other skirted lures.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep I usually trim and thin spinnerbait skirts and chatterbait skirts.

    Matt, good job. I have done most of these things to my jigs for years. I like very small finesse jigs with a good strong hook. Anyway, would like your opinion/tips on the tokyo rig. I fish mostly rivers with silt bottoms. I have not had any luck with this rig and mostly catch small fish when fishing a drop shot. Maybe I should be trying a bubba shot. Whats your thoughts.

    I leave the jigs i make myself full size. living in NH, No lead . I make my own and trim my skirts and weed guards to the conditions. I'd much rather buy dirty jigs or others. but i'm cheap and wont spend $8 for a non lead jig i'm gonna lose in a a short time of fishing.

    Jig fishing is confusing to me. I watch your channel, Randy Blaukat, and fish the moment. When it comes to jigs I think you all have different opinions. Wish you guys could do a group video to discuss all the options.
