See, In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a game not much older than GM, we had maps called Trickjump Maps. In these maps, sometimes, you would have the ENTIRE FUCKING MAP plastered in tits and porn. There were also maps with tributes to characters like Midna, even ones that only modified Swia Oasis, Railgun and the other vanilla maps. These maps were ones I found as a kid and while they were extremely confusing, this kinda gives me that same vibe... just, yknow, not on as large of a scale.
Shoutout to the many oldschool trickjumpers who blew my mind as a kid, the MLB mapping trio for *many* memories, Grey Matter Interactive and all the old-school mappers from 2003-2009

I've seen similar maps in Killing Floor 2 going as far back as 2018, I joined a random endless server, and the entire map was a single path, plastered with pics from Playboy on the side.
Even CS and TF2 had a ton of maps that were "map, but with wall textures replaced with nsfw" floating around, just waiting for a server owner to download and implement into their server.
For maps that have tributes to random characters, I could at least get the point of those. But for the life of me I can't wrap my head around titspam maps aside from "sex funni XD!!".

@@EdenNeedsATH-camHandle Rotoscoping is drawing over live action footage to create realistic animation. A lot of classic Disney movies did this. It's also a very long and expensive process so we don't see it much these days.

Early Garry's mod had an amazing feeling to it. You always wondered what would come next in the updates, or what new maps would come out. Seeing some of this stuff brings that back.

The thing at 4:01 is actually in Half-Life 2! Or at least, the way props behave inside it is. In the final Citadel chapters where you have the super gravity gun, you can come across a Combine device in which you can throw enemies and they'll float around like that, complete with blue particle effects. I assume that the mapper extrapolated that behaviour from the base game, just like they lifted the functional crane from the coast map.

gm_funzone_b2a honestly reminds me so much of the old build maps for HL2:DM. I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually meant for that game and was ported over to GMod.

So crazy to see gm_construct_yasv2 on here because this has legit been my default since 2006. I liked the improvements to the lighting and the extra rooms added a bit more fun to messing with character ai, so to me, this didn't feel forgotten at all. I've kept moving it from PC to PC manually.

"Pool's Closed" mene explaination: it's a Habo Hotel event where a group of people from a website adorning a clover and the number 4 just blocked off the pool on Habo Hotel. Usually with a character designed with black skin, tuxedo and an afro. The excuse being current events from around the time 2005 - 2009. The meme was considered legendary at its time, nowadays its known for the poster "pool's closed" and people just scratch their heads in confusion.

I like seeing the lake map, I've seen the same lake expanded in other large maps.
There’s a forgotten map called nuclear winter resurgence. It was basically incompatible with online servers so it has been lost to time but this map was packed with Easter eggs, AI that randomly spawn or fly in and fight each other or hunt you down and is overall a pretty cool map to explore. Hope someone finds this and passes on the message!

Hey ratlobber , the pool is closed is a référence to mid 2000's Habbo hôtel , people used to dress as black guys in a suit with an afro hair , and block the pools in the game by dancing around the payable Space of the pool to troll people.

Obsidian Conflict has a Discord server, and you probably can find Neico there
(I don't know if you'll ever need this, but its cool I recognized a name in the unknown old gmod map in a -random- youtube video)

It's interesting how much things have changed, I got involved in the gmod community with map making in 2007, starting with gm_simplestruct and near enough ending with gm_hillfoot_construct. Even back in 2007 we still had these quirky maps coming out on the garrysmods website, no workshop back then.
Now on the workshop we tend to have a lot less explicitly "internet culture" maps, or the ones that are have more polish. There are still mappers with outstanding output but they're all different people as the old ones have moved on I assume. The average quality of maps is probably higher, you can find city maps by inexperienced mappers that aren't amazing but resemble a city more so than the average output back in 2007. And the kind of low quality maps that go up nowadays tend not to have ambitious scope like the first one covered but be like "fullbright house in grassy void" or "spooky empty concrete maze"

man, these early maps feel so sven co-op. like, the kind of SCO maps where you'd press buttons to spawn in & blow up units, or jump around a big room with barnacle guns, or climb around in a pointless city of neon-colored geometry and inevitably fall to your death because you accidentally let go of a ladder. just exploring the engine and the tools within it
A version of this map was floating around workshop when I begun to play gmod in 2013 and I had a lot of fun with it. Some of the features were still them very hard to replicate. For example, airboats and jeeps with guns on them were not accessible unless you had a dupe saved or a mod specifically for it.

gm_flatgrass is my favorite because you can create anything from scratch without almost any obstructions, because the map is so big.
