    I’ve watched a few of your videos and just want to tell you it’s is wonderful to find another large family who is honest about struggling and doing it on a low income. Thanks for sharing! Sincerely another family of 7 mom. ❤

    I totally get this! We are not below poverty line, but we are less than $10,000 above it and our kids go to a Christian school. We’re still considered low income and some months I’m amazed there is anything left in the bank, but God always provides. ♥️

    This was an interesting point of view and one that I hadn't thought about. I'm a single mom of 3 that was once living well below the national poverty line. It's crazy how when your financial situation changes and you start making more money, how we choose to spend it on more frivolous things. I truly appreciate how candid you were in this video and I also appreciate the perspective.
    It made me take a step back and really compare my life from then to now and how my spending habits have 100% changed and not in a good way. Great job!
    Also, I watched a few other videos with you showing what you feed your family for a week and I'm in awe at how creative you are! I will have a full pantry of food but my kids act like there's nothing to eat- I've made the comment several times that we are going to have to be creative and find ways to use up what we already have before we buy more. This inspires me to actually live those words. Idk how I stumbled across your channel today, but I'm glad I did. Take care!

    • @SodbusterLiving
      @SodbusterLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LOL! I understand the pantry of food and the fridge and the whole, "there's nothing to eat!"--- "Yeah there is kid, and if you're hungry enough, you'll eat it." Creativity is a fun way to use up what you have and then you can involve the kids too. Sometimes when they participate they are more likely to enjoy it.

    I know how you feel. I never buy coffee, makeup, new clothes etc so it’s hard to watch some people talk about no spends. I could only pay bills for a year and not have much. No down payment on a house. But good for doing it. Still learned something. Love your perspective on discipline. That will be my why. Thanks so much.

    I know this video posted ten months ago, but I'm just seeing your channel/this video for the first time. Thank you so much for your honesty, and for giving other YT-ers and viewers this perspective. I've had great income years, and have had very low income years throughout my life (self-employed for past 16 years). You are so right about how it can be discouraging to try our best to stick to a very tight, careful budget and yet not have any savings to show because there's just not enough 'extra' to do that. But we can give ourselves a solid high-five for getting all the bills paid, and super kudos to you for doing that plus paying of debt!!!! That is totally amazing!! Blessings to you and your family for an abundant and joyful life ahead of you - God does pay us back double for our 'troubles', I believe that.

    I enjoyed this video. I'm reminded of years past when we didn't make enough. I couldn't even make a budget. What was the point in a budget when you honestly had no idea how your bills were getting paid. Our worst year was when our youngest of 6 kids was a newborn and our oldest was in 8th or 9th grade. We brought home 14k in 2016. I still have that tax return. We got several demand letters for our mortgage, had a vehicle repossessed and everything, but God always brought us out of it in surprise ways. It was hard being forced into a no spend life. We had nothing and the only "frivolous" things we had were cell phones for my husband and I and our oldest son. No TV/streaming. No home internet. We even had to water down the shampoo into a seperate container so the kids couldn't waste it and rationed the toothpaste and toilet paper. We had a record breaking Christmas of $80 spent on 6 kids. Thank goodness for 5 below and the dollar tree. Spent $1 on a toy that comes with 4 things inside, open it, and find creative ways to make the kids work to get it. And if I remember correctly, the grandparents paid for about $60ish of the $80 total so we couldn't even buy all of that Christmas. (Side note: we make more now)

    This really resonates with me. All the videos I've seen (bar yourself) is young childless people. I'm a single parent and the struggle month to month just to survive is real. On a positive note, as the children grow older I'll have the budgeting experience to really make it count in future when I can work properly.

My husband has multiple chronic conditions. So ...when the instructor advised not getting into more debt - I laughed. My husbands been hospitalized 8 times in two years and two of his insulin meds quadrupled this year.

I have to laugh when I see folks saying here’s how to save $10000 a year when I don’t even make that! I have found success with the Envelope System but it is still a struggle because when your income is so small you frequently have to “rob Peter to pay Paul”. I really appreciate your videos as you are telling it like it really is for many folks. Thank you💕

    I appreciate this point of view because I feel like a lot of the channels and videos are of young adults who have a cushion of family support (we don’t) and are also single and/or childless. I feel that ‘no spend’ has so many more nuances when you have kids. When you’re in a situation where ‘the things you have’ still isn’t enough in the first place.

    When we bought our property that we have now lived on for about 40 years. I became a "collector". My bed room was bears, my living room was Noah's Ark collectables and my kitchen was chickens. When we rented I did not collect because if we moved then I would have to pack it all up. I have spent several years getting rid of all those dust collecting items. I am turning into more of a minimalist. Maybe because I am older, but mostly it makes me feel freer and gives me a sense of space. My daughter in law is a hoarder and the more we try to get her to get rid of stuff the more she brings into the home. My son wants to pull his hair out at times, but he hauls cattle and is gone alot. she thinks I am crazy for donating so much stuff. We all come to realize sooner or later what is important.

    Like all financial advice a No Spend Year will have different experience, rules, and results for everyone. I am one that at first thought who buys all that stuff - clothes, make-up. Heck ya I could save thousands of dollars if I was blowing thousands. I had my own places money leaked out of the budget. I took tidbits from each video/article/book and made my own plan. People from all income levels need inspiration like you said. I think you are that for those in your situation. Keep making videos and sharing your story.

You've proven you can do it, and even on the weeks or days when everything conspires against you and you find you've spent money... you've still done SO MUCH. That's what this time is missing. Not being able to see that mortgage amount fall. It's harder when you can't. But you can do it.

    How do you keep motivated and encouraged when the information around us is not going to be our outcome?
    Friend, great question! You can be encouraged by knowing you are taking care of your family. You can be encouraged that you and your husband have a plan to not stay in poverty forever, and this is one year closer to that. This no spend year is a step you’re taking to get closer to that, even if all it does is support your family this year.
    Also, we don’t know God’s plans. Have I ever told you how God worked when we moved to AZ ten years ago? It’s a “is this for real” type of story. If I haven’t told you, maybe I’ll make a video on it.

    From the time we were armed til the kids were grown, every year was a no-spend year. Not on purpose but that’s how we lived, pay cheque to
    pay cheque. I made clothes. Grew some veg and made everything from scratch. The kids got jobs at age 10 at their grandfathers bait shop and bought their own things they wanted. Better off relatives gifted them special things but we never went without food or heat(wood was free). After the kids left we went a bit wild and now at retirement age we wished we’d saved something. But our pensions give us enough to live like we did back then and we are going to try a no spend 2023.

      It is not easy! And anyone that says it is has no clue. Maybe for some it really isn't a struggle, but for the rest of us, its a complete shift. From the moment we're born, if we need something its supplied to us. And that need grows into desire. And then we are bombarded around us with people having and we expecting! It's no wonder that one of the commandments is not to covet! Its a natural tendency that needs curbing.

  • @susanwebster9218

    I just happened to see this video...
    What is the old saying..."Comparison is a joy thief!" Try not to compare yourself to others but instead make a game out of it! How low can we go and still have great meals and a great life. I'm talking about libraries for books and movies, garage sales for kids clothes! Maybe even a food pantry if you need help. If you have a few hundred saved at the end (not thousands) then you have money to add to your emergency fund and it's a big WIN. A no spend exercise won't change things for you but the way you look at it will change your world! There are so many things in life we have no control over but the things you do have control over are YOURS.
    I wish you the best. You are not alone. Ask God to help you and He will! I know this for a fact. 😉

      Right now it's more about focusing on not spending money needlessly and appreciating what God/common sense says we need: food, clothes, shelter.

    I understand what you are saying but you do have an end goal and it can be reached. If you paid all your bills and kept your family fed then the goals were met and you were successful! We have had years like that we spent nothing we didn’t have to spend and had nothing extra to show for it but we were fed, clothed and housed. We even reevaluated Christmas and decided if three gifts were good enough for Jesus to receive why do our children deserve more? Some years those gifts are small and inexpensive and other years we have more to spend. Our children appreciate our thoughts on it too. A couple years ago we had the funds and bought our daughter a horse for her Christmas gift last year we didn’t and it wasn’t a problem, although she was allowed to pick out a head stall and breast collar in January as her third gift and our son was given two new tires for his truck in January.
    Seasons in life is what they are. Keep up the good work.

      I don't mind answering :) If we were starving we could get help from our church. However, we are a small congregation of 6? families on a good Sunday and half are the Pastor's kids and the other half is elderly families. If anything, we should be helping them! But by them pinching more 1/2 pennies, they have found amazing ways to step up and help at random times. Other congregations have found ways to help. :)

I agree with you about those channels. Came across one today, How I saved $100,000 before I was 25. Another cleared $80,000 college debt in less than a year. Folk compare themselves unfavourably with others that have a greater ability to pay off debt. But any debt you don't incur, or manage to reduce is a win. Just think though... if you didn't do a NO spend year you would be in debt at the end of the year. So..not being in debt is your measure of success. Also...just because someone makes a "high" income doesn't mena they will have a pile of cash. For example they may have a much higher mortgage than someone on a low income. On a no spned ...try combining it with increasing your income. My husband works overtime and that helps a ton!

    I just watched your video. This is something I picked up on as I listened: I am just going to assume you tithe and sow seed. I am also assuming you pray for both of them and stand on Malachi 3 about God opening the windows of Heaven and rebuking the devourer. I am also assuming you stand on the promised 30, 60, one-hundred-fold return on your seed. What I am not clear on is do you not believe that God can multiple your seed so that you have thousands of dollars in your bank account at the end of the No Spend Year? Throughout the video, and I know this is published a year ago, you speak what is, not what you want. We walk by faith, not by sight. God cannot give you what you speak against. I also understand you are doing a teaching video, however, and correct me if you believe otherwise, I cannot find anywhere in the bible where it says, that God does not multiply seed. I do want to honour your dedication to the Lord.

    • @SodbusterLiving
      @SodbusterLiving  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can you correct me if I am wrong; from this comment, my understanding is that you're saying I do not believe God can meet our needs? I do know HE can and I have seen it, but its not in a way I can tangibly hold up and show you point by point. Sometimes I walk to the mailbox and there is a card in there with a note saying that we were thought of with some cash. It's ALWAYS at a time that it most helpful. But I do not believe God will raise up to be financially well off. Not that HE couldn't, but I am not going to draw a circle around me and pray for financial peace and expect it. I pray THY will be done and if its HIS will that I learn to be content in want, then I will learn. As long as our bills are met, what more do I need?
