Damn straight. It has great shooting that requires thought, a health system that doesn't make you cry in a corner until you cut is feeling better, and it has amazing lip syncing. I know lip syncing shouldn't prove a game's worth, but so many games are still getting this wrong.

It's an incredibly impressive game on a technical level...but it's incredibly bland in terms of gameplay, story, voice acting, and etc. It was basically just a means through which John Carmack could showcase his latest technical achievements. Without the design innovation and focus on actual gameplay that John Romero brought to the Doom franchise, which perfectly complimented Carmack's programming, Doom 3 just ends up being a blah experience overall. Pretty to look at...but not a lot beyond that.

One of the things I liked about the original Doom games was how the enemies dead bodies would not disappear so there was an ever increasing build up of dead bodies all over the map. In Doom 3 the bodies burn up and vanish which I didn't think was as good.

Professional TH-camrs usually come up with a script or at least at outline with a rough idea of what they're gonna say before they film it. Online game magazine editors tend to throw stuff together a lot more quickly since they're on the clock and likely don't get paid per view.

The problem here is thinking of the people whose opinions you read as one group, the same group of people between both time periods. I doubt that the number of people in both camps has much overlap at all. Of course there will be what look like contradictions in the sphere of culture, because everyone's different and it's always a different voice being amplified at different times. It's a whole system and a lot of people oversimplify it to the point of derailing a potentially valuable discussion with fallacy.
In other words, "group of Doom fans I read from 2004" is not going to be the same group of people as "group of Doom fans I read from 2012." Not only are these different time periods, but people come and go within the sphere of current discussion; new fans hop aboard while others fall off. New entries into the series change peoples' perspectives on older entries, such as Doom 3 vs Doom 2016. The entire context of the discussion is constantly shifting while the people talking about it are constantly growing and changing themselves. There's just too many factors involved to simplify it to such an extreme degree. I don't mean to call out this comment alone, but rather criticize this style of thinking in general. No hate, it's easy to fall into these things when everyone around you is doing it too.
Collectivism is a heck of a weird lens to look at the world through. It's what leads to this kind of thinking, and to thinking things like "oh, you like x media franchise? You MUST have xyz political and cultural opinions too, you racist!" (meanwhile the joke's on them, because racism is a form of collectivism, ie assuming members of the same race have the same personality traits or opinions as one another, when in reality - duh! - each person has a different story; so they are acting as the very thing they are attempting to project onto people they think they hate)

I never liked having the light on all the time, that wasn't the point. Having to switch made it great, I remember playing this game first time on the original Xbox, around 11 pm and sweating all the time, when the rest of my family went to bed, looking over my shoulder every 10 minutes.
I played it like four times I think.

  •  10 ปีที่แล้ว +56

I would recommend buying a good old version of Doom 3 on Steam, btw it's a way cheaper than the BFG, and then modify it with the Sikkmod 1.2. The game looks awesome with the Sikkmod... the BFG can't compete with it really. It's kind of funny that the guy who made the Sikkmod did a better job for free than 100 people at id Software for money.

Not "Run around, shoot some things, pull out your flashlight, oh shit an enemy, pull out your gun, shoot, pull out flashlight, oh shit he's not dead, pull out gun, shoot, pull out flashlight, oh he's dead, oh shit, another enemy, pull out gun, rinse, repeat". In Doom 3 shadows are just black. There is no indirect (ambient) light. You could stand in a bright room and shadows would still just be black. It looks to me that they just put more light sources in each level to make it look brighter, and still shadows are still just black. Maybe that was a design choice back then or a technical limitation, but this doesn't look good today.

I wish more people did some research into understanding the reasons why developers had to make the decisions they did. The textures in Doom 3 aren't high res, even for 2004 there were textures in games with much higher resolution. Same story with Rage, the textures are almost the same resolution (by default) as Doom 3 textures. Everyone needs to understand that John Carmack designed the respective engines for these games (idTech 4 and idTech 5) YEARS before the technology existed to be able to perform the tasks he was writing. These games don't have the most high res textures but Doom 3 was unbelievably advanced for 2004, and even with Rage's shortcomings in the texture department, idTech 5 was easily the most advanced graphics engine of it's time. What Carmack did with shadows, and proving the concept of megatexturing, and the way he handled storing and reading texture caches and real time shadows and lighting both unified for all objects in the scene is just mind blowing to me. I can't believe people can bash these games. I urge people to do a little research on game engines in general and then read up on the breakthroughs of idTech 4 and 5 and now, currently idTech 6. The technology being unveiled in these new generations of engines should really blow your minds, you shouldn't be picking fuzzy textures to complain about. You were lucky if you had a PC that could run Doom 3 at 60fps when it came out, but my medium end PC could run Rage at 120FPS maxed out with no issues, considering the jump in optimization that required to go from a game like Doom 3 to a game like Rage, that impresses me more than how clear the textures are. I can make minecraft look like real life by downloading a photo realism texture pack with 1024x1024 textures but that says nothing about the engine. Textures aren't everything when you talk about the graphics of a game engine, the other technology Carmack introduced paved the way for us to have all the games that you guys play and embrace for looking so damn good just keep that in mind.

The framerate issue may have been fixed, but I think the darkness of the game was what the game was based on. For example, the enemies give off glow. Other than some monsters, they all give off glow to show a sense of where the enemy may be. The flashlight being attached doesn't really give that rushed feeling of when you have to get your weapon out, but instead makes you feel more relaxed, as the flashlight handheald gives you limitations of your vision to frighten you. Just my opinion.

It was very unrealistic the time that the game is set on weapons not having flashlights.
I'm pleased that that was corrected!
Anyway, I've played extensively the BFG Edition and I must admit the game is good as it is now! So what if there's less dark corners, the game's still awesome!

the scary thing about doom 3 (original) is that you can't use gun and flashlight at the same time, so if there's a monster in the dark you have to use the flashlight to see the enermies and then "spray and pray", or should I say shooting blind. That's much more scary. Remaster sucks...

    • @Lord_of_Dread

Pham Viet Long Or with the duct tape mod you get the perfect balance, sticks a light to the shotgun and machine gun (but the light has a very narrow focus). That way, early game retains the suspense, and you have an option for seeing with firepower while still having to juggle a bit with heavier weapons

    • @authorwriterstephaniejacks6163

+Pham Viet Long Or you could just do like I do when playing vanilla DooM 3 and use the flashlight to have a perfect laugh beating the zombies with it like a mall cop. That was always hilariously fun to me. I'm a South Park fan, so every time I did hit them with the light I'd whisper to myself "That's a BAD Mr. Kitty," and giggle like a fucking child. I'd laugh my balls off EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. (By the way, I'm not Stephanie Jackson, I'm her son on her youtube account by accident and I'm too lazy to switch accounts.)

    • @Foebane72

Pham Viet Long lol go play resident evil 1-4 if looking for a scary game with shooting and managing items. Doom has never been about this and this why they completely started over with a new series on the new game. That's what doom is about not this shitty doom 3 game.

Foebane72 Because some parts really were pitch black. One of my fondest "oh shit" moments from the original was in the section where there are no lights at all except for the occasional test tube that would move through the area. An Imp spawned in so I looked at it with the flashlight and switched to the machine gun. I started firing at the darkness where I last saw it, when suddenly the muzzle flashes would light up the Imp right in front of my face. It was a terrifying moment and it's what made the original Doom 3 so fucking badass.

The new flash light system and over all higher brightness spoiled it alot... It's still a good game but I'm glad I played the first release years ago when it first came out. The Resurrection of evil environment suit being completely missing as well was kind of random and pointless as well, it turned a risky area where you could suffocate into a casual jog where you could just take as long as you wanted.
It's still a great game and I enjoyed playing it, but I seem to recall the original release having better atmosphere and shadow effects... for example you could enable your own character to cast shadows in the original but I don't see that in this version, so apart from the widescreen it feels like a step backwards and a lazy port for the sake of getting an old game onto PS3 etc.
Probably just "back in my day" nostalgia but that's my opinion anyway. :)

    • @brudel001
      @brudel001 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I disagree that brightness spoiled it. In the original D3 lights worked stupidly like having a lamp in your room but it only casts dim light like half a feet around it and beyond that everything is pitch black.

I for one loved coming around a corner and bashing zombies in the head with my flashlight in panic, and then having to fight in the dark. That was a great feature. I liked that my flashlight wasn't that bright either, it always kept you guessing what could be lurking in the shadows just outside of where your flashlight could illuminate. Unique lighting is a huge part of what makes Doom. Always has been.

I could never get into Doom 3 like others have. I always thought it was a bad/confusing game, but looking back I guess it's because I only have the Xbox version. Not the BFG for 360, the vanilla one for the original Xbox. No shoulder mounted flashlight (and I believe the one you got could only be used for so long before dying), no mods, scarce firearms, gamepad controls, ridiculously dark rooms that always threw me off, all running at a smooth 15fps.

Main diffrence between vanilla and BFG editions is engine architecture. Vanilla was created at the dusk of single thread engines. BFG adopted some later id Software engine solutions to make doom 3 engine heavly multithreaded, especially renderer. In a result some features were possible without performance/visuals giv-and-takes.

Just finished the BFG edition on the Xbox one X in 4K last night in 8 hrs and god does it look great in 4K. This game holds up extremely well still to this day.
I was surprisingly scared at some parts too, and that’s saying a lot since I’ve played just about every horror game and have become numb to the fear horror games intend to give. I actually had to take a break every hour because the stress and tension would become too much. But, there were fearless moments where you feel like a complete badass with DOOM SLAYER vibes and would just be scrolling through your arsenal of weapons and fucking shit up. They don’t make shit like this anymore. I really wish they would continue with the DOOM franchise in a horror light, though I enjoy the DOOM SLAYER games too.
So much nostalgia from back when I was a kid playing through the campaign in co-op on the original Xbox. It was another good final run for me, 10+ years from when I last played it!

I have read many comments about how Doom 3 was in the horror genre, but 1 and 2 weren't. All I know is that when I bought ultimate doom for my playstation all those years ago and hooked it up to my surround system it was horror. I loved it because it made me jump since I could hear the monsters and demons creeping about and behind me. I mean when you out into a room with bloody pentagrams with demons out to kill you how else do you describe it? It wasn't always dark, but I loved the game. I never bought Doom 3 and after watching the movie I made my mind up because I was so ready to see marines fighting demons from hell and I got damned bioshit. Now as I browse considering purchasing vanilla doom 3 or the bfg edition I read that indeed there were demons and hell was about. Now I just have to figure out what to get. I hear about some flashlight change that ruins the atmosphere. I would really appreciate a heads up from some of you guys.

Doom was horror when it came out. It was focused heavily on run n' gun action though, not slinking through shadowy hallways (they did have a little of that).
I think that's only because the technology wasn't there to make it so scary, but nevertheless, it was action over scares.
Doom 3 is pretty different in tone. It's fine by me, and I liked Doom 3, but I really would like to see a new Doom with the classic style. A fuckton of monsters, fast paced, confusing levels, little story, shitloads of explostions and action...

i think the real reason why fans are segregated between doom 1/2 and doom 3 is because doom 3 is a strict horror shooter meant to be more creepy and quiet, whereas doom 1/2 were more action oriented but were scary because of the subject matter and the sheer amount of freaky creatures moving around you. doom 3 saw a few imps being thrown at you and thats it, but doom 1/2 had rooms FILLED with dozens of monsters. different kind of game. i do hope they somehow manage with doom 4 to recreate that wow factor by having a more open floor design in levels with tons of monsters all over the place.

Such an underrated game. It's an actual masterpiece and I still find it as a DOOM game, but with mechanics and gameplay.

what an annoying review. hes the only person in the universe who liked that you couldnt use ya flashlight & gun at the same time.
and why does he not even have it on max detail in the traditional doom3? they didnt up the size of the textures in BFG edition.

he aint the only person who liked the fact that you cannot use the flashlight and the gun at the sametime, a lot of people liked that feature as it added to the horror

For all the people complaining about the flashlight, the flashlight has a short battery life so you still have to manage it. The main thing about the flashlight is logic, we can go to Mars and make a portal to hell but we can't make a hands-free flashlight. Doom 3 BFG still remembers what an FPS game is suppose to be and compare to rip-offs like FEAR is actually tense and exciting and it does come with Doom, Doom 2 and all the DLC for Doom 3 so it's good value for money IMO.

you can play doom 3 in widescreen. Its simple. just edit the cfg file and set r_mode to -1. Then set r_height and r_width. Also adjust the FOV. easy peasy. No need to buy again. Unless you dig that whole 3D thing.

The shadows in Doom 3 are so much better than the BFG edition, despite having better graphics. That makes no sense at all.

Man, I loved how the flashlight worked in Doom 3. You always had to decide between being a little bitch running into a dark room with your flashlight, or manning up, pulling out the shotty, and go in guns blazing like a space marine.

BFG Edition adds Resurrection of Evil, Lost Missions, plus the originals.
Even the Doom 3 Special Edition for Xbox didn't offer that. You just got the originals and that's it. Plus more was added in the levels of Doom 3 that the regular xbox version didn't have.
It's all around better. I played Doom 3 so much that once I bought BFG version I noticed immediately all the differences.

Actually you can use widescreen in vanilla doom 3. Heres how. Makes sure in steam or equivelant you put +set com_allowconsole 1 in launch settings.
    Next
Then presst control shift ~ button.
    r_mode -1
    r_aspectratio 1
    r_customheight 1080
    r_customwidth 1920
Then go to game options and click apply and reload the game.
Replace with 4k or 8k if you like.

BFG edition have motion blur... make it look a lot different, they fix lighting and texture look more details. But both are really awesome

Time for self-criticism. All those months I was delirious about how Silent Hill HD Collection is in all ways inferior to the original games. And it is indeed. But expressing your concerns about a release is one thing, and fixation is another. I haven't ever played Doom 3, and now that I see this hysteria of all the Doom 3 veterans for the damn flashlight, now I understand how ridiculous I have been with my own hysteria about the Silent Hill new voice over and fog effects.

I like BFG a lot. The MIDIS to classic Doom sound a little heavier and the extra content is awesome. I don't mind the lighting, that can be changed in options. The armor flashlight I think is an improvement.

I don't know if its me, but i don't see really any improvement in BFG edition. The only negative thing i always hated was the sound of the guns that are really bad and that did not improved in BFG edition it seems. The sound was like listening to a stream of a very low kbps mp3.

finally! it WAS a feature:D imps give you light with their fireballs as they don't shoot instantly, the short charge up time gives you the chance to 1, locate enemies 2, take action :) (against other enemies you have plasma gun)
All of my comments under any doom 3 video should have this also:
    1, pitch dark room
2, TN panel is a big nono (need black instead of brown, so IPS is the way to go),
3, minimal brightness settings on your display (to achieve even better black)

Same here. I understand business, you want to be successful, but then you lose track of what what made you successful...pleasing the customer and just making them happy and perhaps giving them what they want once in a while.
It seems business now is what business thinks what the customers want instead of just asking or assuming the answer.

When you look at MMOs & RTSs and why they can't be done properly on consoles is not because of any graphical limitations or anything on that level but because of the gameplay. You need to make the gameplay of those 2 genres work with a controller so saying an FPS is more suited for PC because you can have more people in MP than you aren't making a case to why it is a game that is suited for PCs

Here is a question for all the original Doom fans out there. Why did they change the way all the creatures looked? Adding the ability to look around, and jump/duck and made the weapons more realistic was awesome. But why completely change all the creatures into things that hardly resemble what once existed?
