That 2k clear coat is so good, I did a project bike for my nephew and it looks great with it. The only hard thing was not having dust land on it when it dried.
I felt like a star dad for letting my daughter pick out new grips, pedals, and bell. You leveled up big time. Great video. Seems much more doable than I’d thought.
I’m working on a comfort bike inspired by your Specialized build. I started the project last summer and I’m painting now in 2024. I will definitely use that clear coat. Channels like you’re have been a great inspiration for me, thank you 👍
I painted my old Trek 3900 gravel conversion bike recently and came across the same issues as in the video. The spots underneath the paint are impossible to get rid of without completely stripping the old stuff, and getting rid of light spots on the clear coat was also very hard and I ended up doing about 4 coats and still not completely succeeding. The little precal ended very nice though with the bright and shiny paint, which I think works better with the Spray max.
Bro you nailed this so hard. It looks amazing. Now sure, it's not perfect, but it's a kid's bike, and it's more than good enough. I bet she loved it. I might have to do one myself. Looks easy enough (famous last words lol)
yeah I've been using the 2 part clear for a couple of years now, love it. Also I've personally believe the primer isn't really needed if using the Rust-Oleum "paint and primer in one" product.
@@fritolays406 I'm usually a big proponent of primer, even with those 2in1 paints, but that's if you're painting on bare metal. Scuffing the surface should be good enough for those 2in1s.
Awesome job man. Can't wait for the build video. My daughter is about to grow out of her 20" hardtail. Curious as to what you chose for your son? Don't know that I want to spring for the full squish yet. Would love for her to get away from the grip shift though.
looks amazing! Does the Clearcoat dry hard like an enamel? Does it cover up the decals relatively nicely? I wonder how it would fare on bike restoration/preservation applications. Would love to put some of that on my 83' stumpjumper?
That didn’t even cross my mind. It’s just hobby store vinyl for the Cricut cutter. It’s been a couple of weeks and it still looks good. Will update if anything changes
Use Oracle permanent vinyl - in the USA, Micheal's has it in almost any colour you would want, even metallics. I've used it with the 2 part Spraymax epoxy clear coat and the vinyl does not wrinkle. Avoid printable vinyl; that wrinkles! I have done inkjet printable vinyl but you have to spray the vinyl with a very light coat of the 2k clear and let it dry for a couple of hours before applying your stickers to the frame.
Nice job! I wonder why you'll go with a grip shifter again. My own daughter and all the other kids in our group found trigger shifters much easier to handle.
@@TheBikeSauce For my daughter it was the other way round. Turning the grip was too hard but pressing the shift paddle was something she could do without issues.
I did exactly that but honestly is kind of very tedious and fiddly to do, especially if you have a frame with lots of bends and curves. I didn't enjoy the process at all but again that was my first time, I may get better at it if I try again but have no intention to do so yet lol. Oh and also really invest in a heat gun and the tool to push air pockets and bubbles out as you apply the wrap. I think next project I'm definitely spray painting though.
Looks really good. And thanks for mentioning the non programming of pink. We did the same and our daughter ended up with a serious pink phase anyway. 😉. But it’s now black, so…
people make too much of a deal out that anyway. He shouldn't have even had to mention that but, but you'll get the inevitable losers saying he's trying to force her to be a girl or gender assuming or something stupid like that. It gotten to the point where I'm surprised people don't get backlash from doing baby gender reveals using the pink or blue colors.
I think if you would have sanded the first coat of paint and hit it again with a second coat , you wouldn’t have a textured paint job. The clear clear coat looks good though . Maybe fine sand the clear coat and buff but i think that’s a lil much for a bike that’s not show bike. Over all i give you an A.
Do you powder coating elitists ever give a thought the reason people go this route is because they wanna keep the cost down? 😂 I mean my brand new bike with powder coat chips easily so why waste money if it isn't scratch or chip proof?
Awesome work! Thanks for sharing =) I just reworked a Trek Farley fat bike with spray.bike paint and the 2k clearcoat. Overall, it turned out really well, but after the clearcoat, I ended up needing to do a significant amount of polishing with Maguires in order to remove the orange peel. Did you experience any of this? From the video, the results look amazing! I wonder if I didn’t prep things correctly? This was only my first bike paint job, so I have another 10 or so more to do before I catch up with you 🫠
Please make sure you wear a paint suit with this product. Isocyanates can enter through your skin, you want to be fully covered head to toe. It's a great product, but extremely toxic.
If you were working with it everyday, you should protect yourself for sure. There are more toxins in our food, water, and air than that little bit of overspray.
Awesome Dad award
😊😊
As someone who has tried to paint frames with mediocre results, I can say I am very impressed and appreciative of this info

Pink is my absolute fav colour for bikes!
Your daughter will love it.

Haha the accessories go a long way! Should’ve just done that..
I love your Forester, and you're an awesome dad with good painting skills!
this video is Fantastic !!!! great job and its very well articulated and demonstrated

i'm about to do a full respray on my old XC frame, been watching a few spraying videos recently, you made it look really easy to get a good finish :)
Hardest part is having patience. This video just shows all the action and none of the waiting 😆
Thanks for the info, I've been doing a bunch of research and most videos have left me with more questions. Super simple and provided the needed info!
Great job. Looks amazing!
Gorgeous results and very informative thank you

My daughter doesn’t ride it like crazy, but it still looks like it did in the video. Cheers!

I agree. I think I could've gotten away without the primer.
@TheBikeSauce still good that you went the safe route! I would've done a primer just cause I'd be paranoid on it coming out mediocre, lol.
@@fritolays406 I'm usually a big proponent of primer, even with those 2in1 paints, but that's if you're painting on bare metal. Scuffing the surface should be good enough for those 2in1s.
That came out so good. Maybe some light blue or purple shifter cables for that vaporware look.
Dang. Good idea. Bike is built already tho.. I may do a ‘budget makeover’ type of video to show the final product

He went to a 20” giant stp. Not much bigger, but the hydraulic discs and a dropper make it more capable now that we’re exploring more legit trails
I’m in the process of restoring my moms old Schwinn typhoon .
Ok
I don't paint often, but when i do it usually chips easily. Maybe I'm not doing enough coats? I only do maybe 2 coats per layer, primer, color, clear
I see you did not wet sand the paint after you were done before you clear coated it?

Just this one product, and 9-10 bikes of experience under your belt :-). Great looking result!
Did you use a special kind of decals to make sure it wouldn't be affected by the clear coat solvents ?
Could you mention the decals' product info ?

Would one can of the clear coat be enough for an adult MTB?

Thanks for the info.
@@TheBikeSauce
The decals would have been wrinkling when you applied the clear coat (wet). 😫
Therefore, you're ok. 😬
Great video. I bet your daughter will love it! Do you think this process would work on fork lowers?
Yea, but it's a bigger pain to strip down the fork. Could do it with enough patience.
@@TheBikeSaucethanks. Pretty sure I’d need to use some form of chemical stripper to get in the hollowed out areas on the back side of the arch.
If you strip to bare metal, you need some kind of etching primer. Thats why I only scuffed the stock paint and purposely didn’t go to bare metal
Nice job man!
Looks great! Thanks for the tutorial
Nice work! Best alternative to get logo stickers if you don’t have a cricket machine? eBay?
Or Etsy maybe?
Nice job! I wonder why you'll go with a grip shifter again. My own daughter and all the other kids in our group found trigger shifters much easier to handle.
Seems easier for small hands. I’ve got a friend whose son has a hard time with the trigger shifters and uses his whole palm to shift up the cassette

Great job, dad! I see a custom painted Father's Day coffee mug in your future.
😆
Saw this when you first posted, great job! Just curious, how have the decals held up under the clear coat? Any signs of wrinkling or peeling?
Great! Not wrinkling or peeling
@@TheBikeSaucesweet, good to hear 👍🏼
Thanks! Great info
How long did you wait to put clear coat on?
Did you sand the color before applying the clear coat?
No, only after the primer
What kind of window of time should i plan? Can you do all the coats outaide in 1 day then bring the bike inside to harden.
Depends on the weather. If it's warm and sunny, you can do all coats in a day.
nice was just about to paint my bike too. 🙂
My bike is silver and I want to make it black
What if instead of going trough all that I use car vinyl wrap ?

@@NonLegitNation2I totally agree it's very weak for somebody to have to apologize for giving their daughter a pink anything.
The question none of these videos ever address is how long does this DIY spray paint last on a bike?
What sandpaper did you start with down to final sand before primer? Wet or dry sand? Thanks
Cute 🎉
it looks nice but hmm how many bottle of the 2k spray you used on
the bike?😂
1 full can was enough
