I don't know if he'd kill Evander, but let's face it; he would've won the fight. If prime Holmes gets up from Earnie Shavers best shot, Holyfield wouldn't have the power to seriously hurt him back then. Larry was also just a little quicker, stronger, and naturally bigger. I don't see Holyfield beating Larry if they're both 30 years old. Spinks would've lost both times for sure too. I'm still not convinced he beat Larry EITHER time, much less BOTH times.

After Larry lost to Tyson, he polished his skills and became formidable again. His losses to Michael Spinks, a blown-up fast light heavyweight, were surprising. But, here, at 42, wow, he was a stud. If a younger beat yo ass at 33 and a fighter that you whooped at 28 whoops that fighter that mean that fighter better? Come on nigga! Think bout it or you just don’t give fuck a take a win as win??? If Mike or Floyd fight a young fighter today and lose they ain’t shit and am never been shit huh? Nigga you probably unrealistic and think shit stay the same and time is a figment of the imagination. I add to yo bullshit point this, Mike knocked Holmes and 6 years later and older Holmes goes the distance with Holyfield.
Nigga, training is everything! Discipline is everything! Mike did not have that Cuss and Rooney discipline in his later years! Less head movement, slips, and definitely less body shot, body shot combination transitions! You a Holyfield and or Lewis fan, cool good for you! I thought Holyfield was tough. Until I got older and understood the effects of Roids and cherry picking/Lewis.

I love that Holmes in his 40s here gave a prime Holyfield a run for his money. Shows you just how good he really was in his own prime. Admittedly, he was real canny as an old man. The mind games he played on Mercer were great.
Consider Holmes compared to Foreman, both in their second careers. Foreman was always a slugger, relying on his power. Power is the last thing to go for a guy who lifts, as Foreman clearly did in his second career. But Holmes? He was a speed/mobility/technical fighter. Speed and mobility degrade with age. Yet he was still good enough to earn multiple title shots in his mid 40s. And good enough in his 50s to give Butterbean a boxing lesson. Again, shows you just how good he was.
I'm a huge fan of Holyfield too. The man had no fear. He was unafraid to stand and trade with Tyson, Foreman, Lewis, Bowe. That's just nuts. Especially Foreman and Tyson. Who does that? 😆

I went to that fight. The Mercer and Holifield fights were two times in Larry's career that he finally had the majority of the fans rooting for him. Larry had retina surgery before this fight and had trouble with his timing. He fought well and who would have thought that he sould have the better of it on the inside and Holifield would do better from the outside. When he got Holifield cut he wasn't able to take advantage of it and Evander instead of applying pressure boxed consertivetly and just out worked Larry. I had it 116-112. Still not bad for a 42 year old especially considering how hot it was that night. A younger Holmes would have been able to give more angles and move just enough to set up his punches better.
