First we played Barbarian till we collapsed..., then we met all our friends for playing soccer in the back-yard or hide and seek in the woods till sunset. When we came home mother had already prepared the chickens in the stove for us. Then we watched "Fright Night", "The Fog", "Lost Boys" or "Silent Running" on our VHS. That was my time when I grew up in the early and middeighties!
Oh man with this and 'Way of the Exploding fist' in my C64... Rambo, RoboCop and Ghostbusters in the front room VHS 1980's why did you have to end man? great days, wonderful memories, amazing time to be a young teenager ..
Still remember the music from "Way of the Exploding Fist", I whistle it every now and then. Ghostbusters was another favorite of mine, great game, I never won though..
Bought this on tape for the Commodore all those years ago. I remember it included a nice large poster, featuring Maria Whittaker (page 3 model of the time) who was a very buxom lady indeed!
I got to the final sorcerer only once in my life and he beated me immediately. I had no idea how to defeat him, only now (35 years later) I know how to beat him. Thanks for uploading this video guy
OMG I remember playing this when I was like 8yrs old....I used to get hold of the game case and pretend to be looking at the back, but really I was looking at the semi nude hot chick on the front lol
Great game, reminds me totally to my youth. Was always a must to do the move to chop the head ^^ Never beat the sorcerer, was impossible for a little kid, I think!
Small color-tv in the corner of small room. Around the tv there were me and my friends... two were playing and others (2-4) cheered&yelled while they waitet their turn. Those really were fun times =)
What's with the sound? Where's the sound of the head dropping? The swords clashing? The kicking sound and the evil laughter? That's the best part of the game. Hahaha the ending though. At least I've seen it now after 30 years. :)
It's a great misunderstanding that games didn't focus on graphics back then. They really did, it's just that the graphic technology was generally much poorer.
I used to love the fact that the head chop could completely turn a round, down to half a bar of health and pull of a spinning head chop was wonderfully satisfying :)
"For me, one of the things that made Barbarian so special was the team - Steve Brown, Stan Schembri, Andy Fitter, Chris Stangroom, Richard Leinfellner, Sean Griffiths, Richard Joseph, and Dan Malone. We were much more than workmates; we were close friends. We literally worked and socialised together non-stop. I really feel that came through in the game." -- Gary Carr, graphic artist
"I was given pretty much a blank canvas to do whatever I wanted after the success of the Cauldron games. I went to the guys with my checklist for the game that I would want to play: huge characters, brutal, over-the-top violence, laugh-out-loud moments, and cool sword fighting moves that were properly researched and animated. That's exactly how it turned out - we nailed it." -- Steve Brown, designer
i also always thought at 0:28 when you are below drax in the dungeon, you could of just killed the sorcerer stone dead - there and then with your sword, grab the lady and make off. haha.
I remember two things about this game (apart from it was cool) 1: if you just kept rolling at your computer opponent and low kicking you could finish the game). 2. The barbarian on the game cover was wolf from Gladiators!
This was my favorite game on C64. It was the late 80's and I was eleven or so. During one session, I immediately cut the head off every opponent for six levels straight. I felt like a bowler. But I never made it to the wizzard.
if you start with the head chopping move, you were decapitating the 2nd enemy with the green shirt immediately..and the game music, i still find it impressively beautiful.
I was never able to beat the wizard. Also, why doesn't the Amiga version not have music? The game only has like two tracks and they are freaking awesome.
Always loved the way you could chop the other guys head off if you performed the spin move just right. Not that i'm in to that sort of thing (ie chopping heads off), but it was very satisfying. Plus this game looked and sounds the best out of all the other 8 bit micros.
Today my dad and I booted up his old C64. When we were selecting the game, Barbarian popped up and my dad was like "that's one of my favorites" and we looked up the gameplay while we were waiting it to load. He always told me about how the little guy takes the defeated guy by the hair and takes him away. So, pretty much nostalgia for him lol.
I hacked into this game's sprite bank back in the 80s and found a naked version of the background girl. I never worked out how to get her to appear in the game though.
This is still the number one beat em up game when it comes to the feeling of two guys fighting each other to the death with heavy swords. I dont know why, but it does not even need the stupid sound effects to make it feel like they actually fight, and not just slap each other (like in Street Fighter 2 for example). Also the moveset is the most beautiful still to date. Never mind the choppy few frame animation - but that actually helps creating the feeling of the two 120kg muscled barbarians fighting with heavy swords. True masterpiece still, of what it does, it does perfectly.
I fought the wizard sooo many time & could never beat him!! Didn't know I could just roll into him & win. Wish I could play this again! If I remember, it was back & swing to do the head chop. The 1st "graphic" game I ever saw/played. My mom didn't like me playing it, but my pops was cool about it. Lol!
Got the 64 out again recently, me and a friend, neither of us played this since late 80's. The battle went on for 45 minutes, the timer running out each round before the winner could be decided. I finally lost through the old head chop move. God I was so annoyed!
Ahh the famous decapitation move i still remember pulling off that move at the start of the fight, plus I had the poster of Maria Whittiker holding the sword in that blue bikini of hers those were good times.
"Thanks, Big Boy" -- LOOOL :D Back in the day, players needed to fill in the gaps with their imagination.. i guess that's why mine is so lively. :) And btw, I remember a bunch of us guys playing this as kids, yelling and cheering etc. Dad walks in the room, thinking what's going on, and right then someone gets decapitated on screen. Dad didn't approve :D
Yesthose were the days men... The funniest was choping off head with spin. Always wanted to do that to oponent. It was fun. I started to play games back then when I was like 8 years old. How the green creature kicks the head and takes the body. Man this is awesome. I really miss that kind of games. Today graphics are better and music but they lack off something, like a soul.
i've played the whole game with the ROLL-KICK-ROLL-KICK combo all the time :))) But couldn't get the wizard killed :( One of the greatest C64 ever. Good AI :)
I always did good at this up until the cyan shirt guy. He was my equal in combat until I was about 10 years old, and then it wasn't so bad. I see you nailed him with the decap shot, good work! The black shirt guy became my arch rival until I was 12, then from that point on the only one who could stop me was the freaking wizard. I hate the wizard so much.
I feel you... magical times, and I've been longing for them ever since.
Similar story for me.
Video games were an addition to regular play.
cutting the head off and the green frog guy thing kicks his head it was my best thing to do in this game.. good times
Richard Joseph. Great composer on both Amiga and C64.
Oh man with this and 'Way of the Exploding fist' in my C64... Rambo, RoboCop and Ghostbusters in the front room VHS 1980's why did you have to end man? great days, wonderful memories, amazing time to be a young teenager ..
Sweet childhood memories with C64 will last forever......)
Still remember the music from "Way of the Exploding Fist", I whistle it every now and then. Ghostbusters was another favorite of mine, great game, I never won though..
I still do all these things in 2020.
I wish I still had my c64
Robocop on c64 was hard af.
Bought this on tape for the Commodore all those years ago. I remember it included a nice large poster, featuring Maria Whittaker (page 3 model of the time) who was a very buxom lady indeed!
Damn, Kermit did some dark shit back in the days...
Haahha
Ah yes. Maria Whittaker. All these years later I still remember her name. She was big (ahem) back then.
@@carlmanvers5009 lol...we all do...we all do...
Used to play with my G.dad in early 90's. My Uncle always had the latest Mac, then would give to G.dad. Brings back great memories!
Should've done a few fights with the music disabled as well. That little green coroner is adorable when he chuckles. ;)
I think I always got owned by the wizard at the end...rofl!
Loved the head chops!
me too. so many joysticks broken to no avail.
Thanks Big Boy!
Man what a thrill it was to time that head slicing move just right when the battle was beginning and it would hit... :)
The instant decapitation fatality is probably the most satisfying move ever.
Who needs mortal kombat?
For that time the grafic and the sound of the game was awesome good :)
I can still remember the joystick movements for some kombos :) :=)
OnkelCromson
Wasnt it left right for the headchop move? 30 years ago. I guess I am old.
From left to right, as an half-circle movement. But yes.
Great game, reminds me totally to my youth. Was always a must to do the move to chop the head ^^ Never beat the sorcerer, was impossible for a little kid, I think!
I forgot how amazing this soundtrack is.
But it gets better: th-cam.com/video/CsHuS9iNbdw/w-d-xo.html
These headchops were so cool back then. i was always arguing with my brother about who is next to chop some heads. :D
I freakin' love the sound of the C-64's SID chip, it was truly ahead of it's time!
those were the days!
Small color-tv in the corner of small room. Around the tv there were me and my friends... two were playing and others (2-4) cheered&yelled while they waitet their turn.
Those really were fun times =)
Here we have a purple gowned Emperor Ming on his space throne, Princess Leia at his feet, and Conan in space.
The decap move with the kickass music was what I waited all day long!
What's with the sound? Where's the sound of the head dropping? The swords clashing? The kicking sound and the evil laughter? That's the best part of the game.
Hahaha the ending though. At least I've seen it now after 30 years. :)
You can turn off the music and hear the game sounds, or go straight music. The C64 SID chip was awesome, but still limited.
perfect game and music...
Richard Joseph is dead..4 march 2007 :(
His games musics always live....
Cool Music! One of my favorite games on c64
all you had to do at the end was roll..aaaarrrggghhh so many attempts back in the day
Wow, this is amazing, I've never even heard of this game until now
uncharacteristically good choreography. Definitely ahead of its time.
Was one of my favorite C= games...after the Echelon games and Epic's "Games" line of olympic titles ( Summer Gamers I & II, World games... ) :)
Hell yeah!!
the music of the classic games was great! now they concentrate more on the graphics!
Daniel you must not have heard the music of witcher 3
It's a great misunderstanding that games didn't focus on graphics back then. They really did, it's just that the graphic technology was generally much poorer.
One of my best C64 games, very good graphics and sound for the time.
one of the simplest yet best beat em ups of all time. Not even remake could make it better in any way.
OMG, I loved this game so much!!! I used to play it all day long, if i could find it on my game cassette
They need to remake this classic as a downloadable game in the ps store. Oh the memories!
I used to love the fact that the head chop could completely turn a round, down to half a bar of health and pull of a spinning head chop was wonderfully satisfying :)
Blimey, what a blast from the past! Excellent.
This soundtrack so badass :3
Oh my god!!!!! I remember this.....!!!!!! I don't know how many years ago was it......
Thanks for posting this...
the serpents wrapped around the columns were good in this too.
I never played this game, but saw the box on a shelf at Electronics Boutique as a teen. Here in the US, it sold under the name "Death Sword."

Im feeling old when i check back on games i used to play. Comparing it with todays games it always amazes me how fast technology has evolved.
it sure has, they're amazing now
i still like the nostalgia of the 80s though 👍
I had a Tandy 1000hx, friend had a commodore 64, this was my absolute fave game, the midi of commodore kicked ass too, well done.
I remember the ad in one of the many magazines with Maria Whittaker
Man, this game brings back memories. It was such a good game! Loved watching it! cheers :)
Its funny as hell when litttle green dude kicks fighters head before he drags body xD
there is anticipation, fear and drums of freaking boldness
i also always thought at 0:28 when you are below drax in the dungeon, you could of just killed the sorcerer stone dead - there and then with your sword, grab the lady and make off. haha.
Lol at the ending. Thanks big boy.
I remember two things about this game (apart from it was cool)
1: if you just kept rolling at your computer opponent and low kicking you could finish the game).
2. The barbarian on the game cover was wolf from Gladiators!
and everyone tried to do the beheading attack.
i always thought "wtf is master yoda doing here?"
This was my favorite game on C64. It was the late 80's and I was eleven or so. During one session, I immediately cut the head off every opponent for six levels straight. I felt like a bowler. But I never made it to the wizzard.

This was my favorite vs. game on the Commodore 64/128. Now I finally get to see what happens when you beat the wizard. Love that Conan music.

This brought back some memories omfg
omg! :D 20 years ago! And I remember it if it was yesterday :D
I always got my ass kicked @ the black belt tho! time to buy myself a c64 again!
on of my all time favorite games....
i thought you could never defeat drax the sorceror - classic game
I could never get past that darn wizard
brings a tear to my eye everytime :,)
Yes
No
Plot twist : Barbarian chops off the girl's head at the end.
I hacked into this game's sprite bank back in the 80s and found a naked version of the background girl. I never worked out how to get her to appear in the game though.
I used to LOVE this game!
I remember this game having in-game sound.
i remember i had this game on c64 it came in a big black box loved it lol
i never got this game always wanted to play it! yeah good music
The best music in a video game bar none.
Bah, only good thing about the game was the decapitation part + the Maria Whittaker poster :P
Spot on, what a treat to view this sort of shit... cheers mate.

oh man I miss the in game sounds of the goblin thing kicking the head away and then laughing
see them heads fly off, head chopping baby!
This must have been the inspiration of Mortal Kombat 1
God i miss this game thank you for the video!
A great game back in the game. We played this a bunch.
Epic sound track to boot. :)
1:53 !!! owned 😂

kick ass music... this with IK+

ah, sweet!
nostalgic!
That music is still sick.
It had become my deepest definition of "true fighting game".
I am 26 and remember playing this. fuck pokemon
I always loved/hated so much how the course of a match could be flipped upside down by a headcut.
Great game!

top notch soundtrack
