Excellent video. Beautifully shot, well lit, and clearly shoes what needs to be done. I like the attention to detail with different plastic bags for each screw type.
Thank you!! Excellent guide! Love the zooms on the fiddly bits! Have been getting smart error and pc crashing. HDD seems fine when plugged into another computer but I finally put the SSD in now! Next stop - replace the old DVD drive with the old HDD drive!
Just used this video as a guideline to replace the DVD drive with an intel 320 SSD that was collecting dust. It was a low-cost re-purposing. The DVD drive I replaced just has a single screw on the end with the SATA connection to disconnect it. Thanks!
This model has 10 screws underneath not including the RAM hatch screw, there are 3 different screw sizes and they are in the most random placements imaginable. It is an absolute puzzle to put them back in the right holes. Took me 2 hours. But the new SSD makes such an enormous difference to the performance compared to the old 5400RPM HDD. The owner could not believe the change.
A heads up to anyone swapping the hard drive. You have to not only be delicate with the ribbon cables, you may have to be especially careful with the alignment on the one going over the hard drive. I just had just had mine burn a wire through the ribbon's insulation while re-seating it after the hard drive upgrade worked for about a month, then the laptop wouldn't turn on and the lights (among some of the things on that board) were acting odd. So when I went to re-seat the cable, one of the wires burnt through the cable's insulation. I don't know if there was underlying issue or if I simply didn't have it aligned just right and shorted something. Just to be clear, the laptop was unplugged and powered off when this occurred so it's likely there is power available unless you go through the trouble of removing the battery first.
That's some crappy design right there, perfectly in tone with what I've seen working on one recently and destroying the backlight after a minuscule 40cm drop. BOO! to Asus!
Thanks for the video. After building a new desktop pc i used the Samsung EVO 840 that was in my old rig to upgrade my laptop after seeing your video. It feels like a brand new machine.
The F555B I was asked to do this switch on was missing 3 screws and I'm therefore not sure all the others were in their correct places to start off with. Other than that, this is the same for the above mentioned model too.
Thank you very much for the video! Some months ago I changed the HDD from a former High End Notebook with ease and was completely shocked when I saw how complex the process on a "mainstream" Notebook like the F555 was. But I managed it with your help ;)

@Kian Devin I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I have 8GB RAM in my notebook and I have seen that my motherboard (Asus X555LAB) supports up to 16GB and on the Crucial website tells me that I have 2 slots. I know the back slot of the pc but the other where it is? I have 2 modules of 4Gb and I would like to put 2 modules of 8gb. How do I do it?

Yes, you won't have to buy another Windows key. Hello! I'm back xD I have another question, Crucial BX200 SSD 240gb have the same dimentions of samsung evo? i want buy that ssd for my asus f554la-xx500h, thanks a lot
+93Fullmetalpanic Yes, the Crucial BX200 SSD is also 2.5" big so it will fit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive#Form_factors Although there is a slight difference in thickness, but that shouldn't matter. (Crucial BX200 is 6.8mm thick, Samsung 850 is 7mm thick)

+Ketho Thanks to your video and answer on the optical disc drive question I suscesfully upgraded to a Samsung EVO 850 SSD drive and moved the HDD to the optical drive space using a HDD caddy. Now i am using the optical disc drive with a extrrnal enclosure. Thanks again.
+ultraball69 That is really nice idea to still make use of your HDD. Maybe you could have made a video how to replace the optical disk drive if there are noone x)
Hi I'm not really a technical guy(console peasant) but why would you replace the original 500gb hard drive with a 250gb SSD? isn't that a downgrade instead?
It's a cost-benefit analysis. For $90~ you'd get a 250GB SSD, but for $140~ you'd get a 500GB SSD and not lose any disk space. So it depends if you have enough money and really need that 500GB of storage My opinion is that the performance for a 250GB SSD greatly outweights a 500GB hard disk, but it depends per person and situation how much disk space you need (if that would be considered a downgrade)
How do I transfer all the contents of my HD to the new SSD? For example, I have preinstalled Office on the HD, will I lose this? I dont have the CD's for Office or Windows, it was preinstalled
option A) create a recovery drive from the HDD, and then install it on your new SSD windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive option B) use disk cloning software en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_disk_cloning_software option C) Windows 10 activates automatically when using a clean install, even if you replaced your HDD www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 No idea about Microsoft Office, there should be a key or license somewhere, Office 2016 or 365 have to be licensed to your account first, afterwards you just log in with your account www.office.com/myaccount
+Ketho Thank you. I just bought this laptop and an ssd was hesitant to install the ssd thinking that i need to get all the drivers before I swapped hard drives.
Yes, but only if you replace the DVD drive instead for the SSD www.amazon.com/Vantec-Aluminum-Caddy-Laptop-MRK-HC95A-BK/dp/B0193WYW36 www.amazon.com/Protronix-Optical-Drive-Caddy-Universal/dp/B004XIUQYA
You can also swap the motherboards on these badboys with those of better models. All ASUS F and X series of those years use the same form factor. I changed my Pentium N3700 to an I7. Just be careful
+Aikirageorge You have to reinstall the os on your new ssd, and optionally backup your documents/data from the old hdd. The Windows 10 key/license stays on your laptop. When you reinstall Win10 on your new ssd it will automatically activate. A) You can choose to either reinstall a clean Win10 www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 B) Or create a recovery disk first with the os on your hdd, and then use that to reinstall it on your ssd. This way you can keep your Asus software/bloatware windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive
+ashystyle I didn't. I just did a clean install of Windows 10 since I did not want the Asus bloatware anyway. It's also convenient that you can skip entering the Win10 key since it's stored in the motherboard/bios itself. www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 If you want to backup the OS (and maybe everything else) you can create a recovery drive first with the old OS. windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive
+Ketho Ok, I see! The only thing good with the asus fabric setup is that you can whenever just revers everything to the factory setting with just a reboot. I mean if u ever going to sell the laptop or even if you your self get a really bad trojan/virus. And since the upgrade to the Windows 10 is free and it does accept the win7/8/8,1 key.. it will allow you to just install windows 10 and then just press forward during the installation/at the key input/registration. I'm I right? And about the backup the os and everything else..you can only do it your way when the system is running healthy. Not when for example your harddriver/ssd has gone all wrong!
+ashystyle Yeah, I returned another Asus laptop to amazon.com and it was convenient to just revert everything to factory default settings before returning it. The newer models already have Windows 10 installed instead of Win7/8 (otherwise you will have to upgrade them to Windows 10 first). But yes you can just press forward / skip during the Win10 installation. It will activate automatically when it connects to the internet. Even after replacing the Hard Disk with an SSD. Logically you create a backup of the old OS when the system is still new/healthy ;)
+Ketho Ye but lets say the harddrive crashes and you have access to a similar or exact modell.. then you can create a recovery dvd from the working laptop. Anyways.. do you know if your Asus F555L does support double 2.5 harddrives?
+Mx2 I sold it for 20 euro after formatting it. That person replaced it with the drive in his PlayStation 3. But it would be wise to hold on to your original hdd, just in case you need to return your laptop for warranty.
I only ended up with one extra screw. Thanks for your help sir!
Excellent video. Beautifully shot, well lit, and clearly shoes what needs to be done. I like the attention to detail with different plastic bags for each screw type.
It's close with all asus series X, F, etc..

The color coded screw guide was very helpful. Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks for the how-to! Showing the screw layout helps! Is there a space/bay for an additional HDD or SSD?
Excellent. Fast an effective unlike other vids taking 2 minutes showing to take out basic screws.
A heads up to anyone swapping the hard drive. You have to not only be delicate with the ribbon cables, you may have to be especially careful with the alignment on the one going over the hard drive.

Is it possible to replace the wifi card on this model? Mine keeps dropping the connection after a few hours and needs a reboot to fix it.
The ribbon around the hard drive is stuck or glued to the hard drive. Is it ok to gently peel it off?
i took all the screws out but the keyboard doesnt take off in the middle... but there are no screws in the middle. why its stuck?
Is it a good laptop after the upgrades?

How do I transfer all the contents of my HD to the new SSD? For example, I have preinstalled Office on the HD, will I lose this? I dont have the CD's for Office or Windows, it was preinstalled
option A) create a recovery drive from the HDD, and then install it on your new SSD
windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive
option B) use disk cloning software
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_disk_cloning_software
option C) Windows 10 activates automatically when using a clean install, even if you replaced your HDD

No idea about Microsoft Office, there should be a key or license somewhere, Office 2016 or 365 have to be licensed to your account first, afterwards you just log in with your account

Take care not to damage the indicator LEDs when sliding the credit card.
excelente video buen hombre.

Thanks, this helped me alot
Did you need to download any drivers before switching to the SSD?
+Xavier Roberts No, I just reinstalled Windows 10 on the new SSD without any problems www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
+Ketho Thank you. I just bought this laptop and an ssd was hesitant to install the ssd thinking that i need to get all the drivers before I swapped hard drives.
Hi Thank you
very helpful
the battery can be replaced
can we replace dvd hard disk to ssd? thanks
yes but u must use hdd caddy
hi, how can i reset bios settings on this laptop, there is no battery on MB, and i don't remember passwor ;-(
+Piotr Poborski I don't know about an easy way to reset bios password. You might have to return the laptop to ASUS support if it still has warranty.
I do that and my laptop its not even turning on... Please, help I use my computer everyday :c
waar je OV chipkaart al niet handig voor is :)
Is it possible to keep the HHD and jsut add the SSD?
Yes, but only if you replace the DVD drive instead for the SSD

That's fine. I dont know the last time i used a CD Drive
You can also swap the motherboards on these badboys with those of better models. All ASUS F and X series of those years use the same form factor. I changed my Pentium N3700 to an I7. Just be careful
so....what happened to the os on your hdd? if you now have it on your ssd.
+Aikirageorge You have to reinstall the os on your new ssd, and optionally backup your documents/data from the old hdd.
The Windows 10 key/license stays on your laptop. When you reinstall Win10 on your new ssd it will automatically activate.
A) You can choose to either reinstall a clean Win10
www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
B) Or create a recovery disk first with the os on your hdd, and then use that to reinstall it on your ssd. This way you can keep your Asus software/bloatware
windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive
+Ketho thanks for fast reply :)
How did you backed up the OS and everything on the old disk?
+ashystyle I didn't. I just did a clean install of Windows 10 since I did not want the Asus bloatware anyway. It's also convenient that you can skip entering the Win10 key since it's stored in the motherboard/bios itself.
www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
If you want to backup the OS (and maybe everything else) you can create a recovery drive first with the old OS.
windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/create-a-recovery-drive
+ashystyle It does not support double 2.5" hdd or ssd sadly. There is just not enough space and there is only a single sata slot.
The pen is for what?
What did you do with the original drive?
+Mx2 I sold it for 20 euro after formatting it. That person replaced it with the drive in his PlayStation 3.
But it would be wise to hold on to your original hdd, just in case you need to return your laptop for warranty.
this very helpful video
Thank You!
