    Your koi sometimes slurp loudly when they eat. What do you do to correct this impolite behavior? LOL I think you have very pretty fish and you have given out some very good and correct information on your video.

    You're in for a trouble !
    I started like you with a 3 or a 4 foot tank - then got a 6footer - and the buggers just kept growing !
    It was not possible to have any plants in the tank as they will chew it up.
    So - start digging - now have a 9m by 2m (app 27 feet by 7 or so feet) pond - about 4 feet deep - the koi loves it BUT the winter just started and the temperature dropped to like 10C - so I found a pond heater (Titan - 1000W) and that keep the water at about 15-16C - fish is happily swimming and eating. Freeze dried shrimp (for human consumption) is the favorite - but boiled rice and some vegetables are also consumed - but the shrimp is number 1 !
    Good Luck

    In the meantime do minor 10-15% water changes everyday. That will help with your fish and feed very sparingly as the ammonia and nitrite spikes as a result will be too high for the fish tolerate.

      koi and goldfish are all conisdered large fish. 2.5 gallons is way too small for them even at that size for so many reasons too many to mention. Expect very short life expectancy. Upsize your tank.

He has already killed a chinese hi fin shark, a smaller pleco (algae eater) and almost killed another smaller koi which I ended up moving to another tank. He pretty much eats anything and i feed the pleco zuccini, cucumber, wafers ect which if he doesn't get to fast enough the koi devours it. I don't know what "mulm" is. When I rinse the filters, I rinse them in a bucket of water that I have taken from the tank so as not to disturb the bacteria. Should I not be doing this? There's plenty of brown gunk that comes out.
    I ordered and received a canister filter, but had to send it back since I have no place LOW enough under the aquarium and have sent for a HOB filter instead. But one that is rated for a 90 gallon tank (mine is 55).
    Thank you so much for your helpful comments.

    • @JardiniloveBlogspotmadness358
      @JardiniloveBlogspotmadness358  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mulm is basically a build up of that "brown gunk". Yes - using same water from the tank will help minimise killing the bacteria. I find HOBs good as I have used them before but most hobs do not carry enough filter media in their compartments to evenly trap the mulm inturn trap minute particles effectively for their rated size. They are still good at harbouring nitrifying bacteria. You may have to resort to usuing carbon in the HOB filter until your water clears.

    • @sandrajn
      @sandrajn 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Madness358
      So should I be leaving the "brown gunk" in the filters when I rinse them? I have been mucking it out, up to now. I do have some carbon sheets that I can cut to fit to add to the filter.
      Your water is SO crystal clear, and I am changing about 1/3 of mine every other day or every third day, and it is somewhat cloudy :-(

    • @JardiniloveBlogspotmadness358

      Large koi will always try to eat smaller fish. Best practice is to separate them. Keeping the larger fish well fed will help Most koi will constantly forage due to their large appetites especially at higher temperatures, this means they will eat smaller fish opportunistically as well.

    Initially use black carbon in your filter. That will polish the water and clear it up. After that you can take it out as over time it actually leeches out. HOB filters are not as effective as external canister filters and I tend to change my water every week even though every other day is very good. I have used Uv before but now find it overrated as regular water changes will do exactly the same thing and is more necessary than the UV expense.

    for a 7ft foot 260 gallon aquarium will the be big enough for adult koi? I'm building a very large tank, and making sure the fish are healthy and have plenty of room to swim. and a few questions i was orginally going to get two koi but read through your comments stating the more koi, the more they will control their growth so what would be an ideal amount of koi to get? thanks ! :)

    can I feed them breadslices??

  • @JardiniloveBlogspotmadness358
    @JardiniloveBlogspotmadness358  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry about the late reply. Female koi when mature are plump and round as they need to carry the eggs. The males will tend to be slimmer compared to females. Also the males(when sexually mature) will have gills that are not smooth but little dots on them when in season. They might look roughish and only comes about during breeding season. However that may be hard in a pond to distinguish as you are looking from above. Also there are subtle difference on fins as wells.

    Everyone including experts really has different opinions on the amount of koi for a large tank with alot of grey areas. I would say about 500 litres at least for one koi up to 30-45cm. After that you may need to upgrade again.However as long as they naturally in the tank is the main concern.

    It seems that you know a lot about your kois. Good info on the dieting and reduction of high protein rich food during winter, even so I am concerned about one of your kois. He seems to be getting potbellied.

    If Koi are starved enough they will eat any almost any living aquarium plant. When mine are hungry they eat java fern and ludwigia when i dont feed them. There are also automatic mechanical feeders you can buy from the aquarium shops that drops specific doses of food to the tank. However personal feeding I feel is best so they can get used to your presence and you can see any changes in their behaviour and assess them.
