Kois love being stimulated by touch! We have a pond here with a little waterfall for making the water carry more oxygen. They love putting their head right where the water flows in, like a massage!

My parents had one that would hand feed from the very start. Speck, the hand feeding one would eat anything but carrots and rice krispies. They all grew up inside, in the kitchen. Hence, during dinner, It would be, "see if he will eat this." Speck could have lived on scrambled eggs and peanut butter toast. Personalities?, very much. If Speck felt another Koi had gotten his food, they would get slapped around by him. Wonderful creatures. Not your grandmother's goldfish.

Thanks for an interesting story of Koi taming, particularly that they recognize you personally and that taming is a good way to find out their individual characters. Actually I've just 'tamed' much smaller fishes by feeding them from a pipette, I think that any size fish can be tamed.

I love that you mentioned how different their personalities can be that is something I have also noticed it is amazing the depth of relationship you can have with your koi I think a lot of people are are missing out on a great aspect of owning koi. My ochiba went a long way in and stealing confidence in a few of my shire fish so that now out of the 21 I only have two that will not hand feed (everyone else will let me pet them but display varying degrees of enjoyment with that haha).

Our koi allow petting and play everyday and actively seek us out. It’s been 2 years to get to this point. Now there are two babies in the tank that are curious and come over to watch but aren’t ready just yet. They most likely will go faster with the two big ones showing then it’s ok as you said.

They are more than pets. I love throwing flakes to the smaller Kois than to the big ones, I feed them pellets and touch them. Each time I feed one in particular the biggest one, he knows to come up very close to get his food and I gently touch the top of his head. And it comes back for more. So fun.

(I do have it on video because my children did not believe me) lol. all but two of the 21 will let me pet them and actually seem like they seek out physical attention they are wonderful pets and I love them so much. harrison mauch I too have lost many koi to herons, and I have been very discouraged, but I enjoy my koi, so I keep going and try other things. If you can look at my youtube site, you may be able to see the setup I have made. I wound up having to put a green plastic fence around my pond. You know how they put those orange fences around trees they want to protect? Well, I bought the same fences, but green, not orange. I first had fishing line over the top, but the heron still got in, so I finally put that green weedeater line across the top in all directions. Doesn't look as nice as a regular pond, but I have my koi.

Brad, Thanks for share your tips and agreed with you that the KOI has personality and trust but you have be patient and very patient stay next to the pond. I have about 15 KOIs in first week about 8 days in my new 1800 Gallon POND they are very young baby. here my advise. Show up at the pond where you're think you are gonna to feed them everyday just stay there 2-3 times a days for about 10-15 minutes. dont make sudden move, sit still read a book or brink beer and drop few pellets at a time they will come up surface and eat. my first 7 days trained my baby koi they are not scare and come up everytime I drop food. always drop food same spot and set time to feed them. myself I schedule feed them 7am and 7pm on summer time. Fall Season can set 8am and 5pm schedule. once Koi trusted you they will not run to hidden and scare you any more. Please be patient take time about 2-3 weeks and everyday show up and feed them same spot then KOI very happy to see you every time you show up at Pond.
