Ooznest are cool. I had a slightly malformed part in my Ox kit from them that made it hard to fit. I mentioned it to someone else saying that I could get around the problem so it’s no problem at all. So I was shocked when I got a direct message from Ooznest saying they wanted to replace the part saying it shouldn’t have happened. Basically it was a 3D printed part and the print shifted slightly... wasn’t Ooz’s problem as the shift happened inside some screw holes which wasn’t easily apparent in black plastic. The new part arrived in a day or so and it was perfect. How many firms keep track of their customers problems like this and then go out of the way to fix the problem. Sadly, this was only a few months before the Workbee came out. If I had waited a few months I could have had a screw driven machine instead of a belt drive one... especially as the only real problem was belts coming loose and the faff around tightening them up. Can the OX be converted or upgraded to a screw drive? For some reason I was thinking it could.
Hey can i ask a question. The buying cnc router world is a nightmare I hope to be out of soon but dont want to buy the wrong machine. So in your view whats likely to be the main differences between a £1500 machine and a £6000 machine.
James Barratt which $6k machine? Software, setup, speed, tolerances. Lots of differences. Buy the machine that’s right for you. Right for your budget. Is it intended to be a hobby, learning tool, business? So many factors to consider. I have two that are similar in capability and the Workbee is a little cheaper. Takes a little more time to assemble. That said, either machine can pay for themselves in less than a month. Biggest difference would be that a larger more expensive machine can produce more, so in the long term it could be more profitable. It’s a tough call. I went through this with my laser. By something cheap or go with one of the Cadillac brands. I went mid range. I’m happy I did. It’s done everything I’ve thrown at it and has paid for itself over and over.
Right. So well i want to machine 5mm Aluminium. I dont have any much need for machining wood. Software you say. I operate a mac. Is there really bad software and good then. Being I do cad on fusion 360 and it has a cam package, figured that was everything needed bar the software to control feom the gcode the machine. Guess its that software you mean. So can you make big mistakes getting a kind of software which is difficult and full of glitches. Guess so but how to know whats bad. Laser. Is yours just for engraving or can you cut sheet steel with it too.

The machine operating system is included. For design or CAD I use Vectric Aspire, but there is a bunch of less feature rich options available for Vectric that do more than I need.
I’m looking at getting one of these as a central point of my craftware business with a view to getting a second within the following couple years for exactly the reasons you identify. But what is the cutting speed like?
I’m going to need to re-record it. I had the footage on an iMac with a fusion drive. It failed and I lost footage for about 6 videos I had shot but not completed editing.
Hi ManCraftingTM, Thanks for the video. Could you tel which nema motor torque size is the best for all purpose job (wood, plastic and solf metal). They come with torque from 0.5NM up to 3NM I guess. Thanks
Great question. It’s not something I’ve ever considered. I usually get the Nema 23’s that come with the CNC kits I have purchased. They have all been adequate for all my needs.
Hi, great video...I have a small sign shop and i'm looking at getting a CNC router, its mostly going to be for cut out letters etc...would you recommend this router and can it do longer lengths in sections that get pulled through?
Skynyrd FPV I’d absolutely recommend it. It’s a solid machine. My shop has been getting reorganized for the past month so videos have been sparse. I have several coming up on this machine. The way you make larger signs is by adding registration points in the file. So the when the first section is done and you move the material it matches up perfectly. You can put some dowels in the waste board that the registration points will slip over so its truly in position.
Great question and one I’m hoping to answer. One I should have already answered. Unfortunately during a month of turning my workshop upside down I lost two laptops. One having my design software and controls my Shapeoko the other controls my Ooznest. Fortunately they were together and I just found them both. I need to figure out a design I want to make and create the video.
Looking forward to seeing it cut. I'm building a Chinese clone in the 1500mm*1000mm size. Currently working on the electronics enclosure... hoping to be making chips by Christmas.
@@ManCrafting Tom is coming out in Feb to catch some POW on the mountains... You could see if he can stuff you in a suitcase!!! :D. I'd love to show you around my humble operation.
@@ManCrafting Still experimenting. last item was a 6mm ply cut to make a set of parts that assemble into- a mounted holder for the machines essential tools and fixtures. Wooden numberal plaques for the local church pews, drink coasters for fellow Men's Shed members, toys for the grandchildren... When you have a CNC your view of every build changes. Making it on screen at your desk is more comfortable than in the workshop, and duplicates are simple. Wish I had got one years ago...Invested in Vectric software because it makes it a breeze. I could have scratch built the machine, designed a controller, written the control software but did not. Why? because I want to cut wood, not play at product design (I used to get paid for that). This is not only a good machine, it is well supported and easy to modify/extend. A very good bet for a hobbyist, capable and not expensive. Will get you going quickly.
It’s on my todo list. I’ve had a lot of interruptions in the past six months, but things are stabilizing. Hopefully in the next 30 days I’ll have another video up.
If an inexpensive, screw-driven CNC like the Workbee peaks your interest, then you should take a moment to check out the LongMill Benchtop CNC. It's got a similar design intent behind it
Yup the documents are amazing. In fact my little 9 yo daughter loves to build lego and she took the box and assembled most parts, i keep a close eye on this, help her fixing the screws when she doesn't have enough power. But... she's buiding this as a 9 year old without any education in engineering.
What happened to the promised review of the Open Build Mill and the comparison between the WorkBee & the Shapeoko? I haven't seen any CNC vidoes, on your channel, since this one was posted. Have CNCs fallen out of favour with you?
I shot the video. Loaded it to my hard drive on my IMac. It crashed. I haven’t refilled it. I have it on my todo list, but I’ve just been trying to keep up with have to dos in my life for the past 18 months. Definitely not out of favor.
I ended up going with Bulkman on ebay, half the price for the 1515 workbee, shipping was free compared to costing me more than I could afford to Canada. Same machine.
@@ManCrafting I have it but still building a new work shop to house it. Have looked at it all seems to be there and in good shape. Only thing I'm a bit skeptical about is the lead screws. 8mm isn't any were near rigged enough in my eyes, will be changing that asap. Also i'll be changing the stepper motors, not sure what Ooznest supplied but mine came with 175 oz steppers, That is not going to cut it lol get it ? not gonna cut it . Any way I have 3 425 oz steppers I'll use instead for X and Y, Z can stay as the 125 oz steppers. I did how ever get some closed loop steppers I was going to put in there but way too big, nema 35 steppers. I'll use them to build a bigger machine down the road using the workbee. Like you I plan on having my own cnc army, 3d printers, lasers and routers.
Graham Prinn well I hope in the end you have the machine you want with components that will suit your needs. It sounds like you have a better grasp of upgrades or changing your platform than I would.
@@ManCrafting I did build a small machine a while back, 3 axis from plans I bought, so I know a little what works and what doesn't and how to fix it if need be. But I never had a break out board with my old machine so that is a bit different for me at the moment. Other than that I'm happy or will be happy with the workbee I,m sure.
Millpreet it’s coming. Had a few things come up that have prevented any videos. Unfortunately this isn’t my full time job, and the world is in a crazy place. It’s coming though.
Really looking forward to a short comparison, I'm a student in the market for something to get me started with a side gig making stuff with a CNC router. Plus I would love to make more professional parts and enclosures for my electronics projects. So I might get a CNC and a 3D printer this summer, especially cause I'll have a lot of time with no summer job.
What's the size of WorkBee machine shown in the video? Is it 1500 x 1000? If yes, wondering how the accuracy and overall performance of lead screw drive is working out on 1500mm length.
Workbee uses a duet3d controller that would be the biggest difference compared to shapeoko. I'm not sold on duet3d which wasn't designed for cnc machines but rather 3d printers. I wish they gave an option of using the proven ethernet Smoothstepper.
Hey, thanks for your reply. The Duet was initially a 3D Printing controller, but since we have adopted it for our WorkBee, there wouldn't be many things remaining GRBL can do which the Duet3D couldn't. The Duet also has a lot of additional features which are so useful, such as onboard storage of G-Code files, so if the machines disconnects mid-job, it will carry on running. We have also made our own interface for the Duet, which is CNC orientated.
Great question. They have some sort of partnership. This design, the Workbee was designed by Ooznest. I think the router mount is sourced from Open Builds. If you look at an earlier comment Ooznest mentioned that they are an open source platform. Most of the kit is manufactured in the UK though.
Jeremy W from Open Builds site. “We designed this kit due to the number of requests for modifications of our OX CNC Machine Kit. We are offering a Full Kit, Mechanical Kit, Plates Kit and various add-on kits on our website. These kits can be found by following this link: ooznest.co.uk/product/workbee-cnc-full-kit/ Lots and lots of the parts on the machine come direct from Openbuildspartstore. Therefore, you can be sure you are supporting them :). Full disclosure, the extrusions are now manufactured by us in the UK, but this was due to it becoming unfeasible to ship the quantities we need from Openbuilds in the US anymore.”
both machines are basically the same, but you have already replied that the two companies cooperated with each other. great machines and videos, I'm considering buying one myself. would only like to have her ceiling at least 70 mm deep.
By the way... I bought it from bulkman3d.com , not ooznest. Ooznest copied it. I think. Maybe it's the same company. I don't know. And then, there's openbuilds. So it's kinda confusing now.
We are the Original Designer of the WorkBee and released it Opensource. We did not copy it from Bulkman3D, the other way round. The Original Genuine WorkBee is only made and sold by us.
Lol days? Ha I put two of these together yesterday in about 4 hours. Kinda sad you could even be confused building this. Each box has parts for each step in order of the booklet....
RICH MORGENSTEIN hmmm. Must feel good to be so superior. The point of me building this is to prove that pretty much anyone who is interested can build this. It took me longer than most because I was doing it 15 min here and there. So, getting back to where I was when I was interrupted likely wasted time. I just went to your channel to see the 2 hour Ooznest build. Amazing. Nothing there. Even after building two, I’ll bet cash money you couldn’t build a 3rd in two hours. But, 50+ years and 2 college degrees can make a person jaded. Unfortunately I can reed well enough to reed your condescending comments. Thanks for watching.
Pros and cons are subjective and I thought I gave a couple of reasons why someone would love or not like having this CNC. Such as just how many parts it takes to assemble. Some people may love/hate that about it.
There are chinese companies selling ozznest workbee replicas. They are exactly the same beside the controller. Those chinese replicas are even cheaper less than $1000. Frank youtuber bought one and has made a video of it. Frank beefed it up with centroid acorn controller and clearpath servos.
MySchizo Buddy personally, cheapest price isn’t always important to me. It rarely is. I prefer to support companies that will support me. I’ve never had a single Chinese company provide service after the sale. Ooznest will actually do team viewer sessions to get you up and running.
Hey, thanks for your reply. The WorkBee is an opensource machine, so we welcome other companies making it available through their stores and putting their own spin on it. However, when buying a machine from Ooznest you are not only getting a great product with superb customer service behind it, but also supporting further R&D to push the WorkBee and CNC Machining further and bring it to many more makers at an affordable price!
@@ooznest im curious though, are the workbee components manufactured in the uk, or does a lot of it come from china? I imagine it's unavoidable at this point to not have components come from china, but just curious. Seems like its definitely the sort of machine i would get to start getting into cnc, if i had the space.
@@ge2719 Parts come from all over. The main part, the aluminium extrusion is made in the UK, and a lot of the hardware comes from the UK. What kind of software is good to use with work with this cnc
Check my videos
How’s it going? Cutting speed isn’t as good as a professional 4X12 setup with a water cooled spindle, but I could buy 10 of these for that price.
Very interested. In the market. When can we see the comparison?
Thank you for sharing. It was very helpful. Did you do the other two videos (production and comparison)? I'm very interested. Cheers!
ManCraftingTM thank you for reply, if all goes well after this lockdown I’m hoping to get one, it does look a great bit of kit.
Which is faster? Creating an identical project, which CNC produces faster, the Workbee or the Shapeoko?
Great question and one I’m hoping to answer. One I should have already answered. Unfortunately during a month of turning my workshop upside down I lost two laptops. One having my design software and controls my Shapeoko the other controls my Ooznest. Fortunately they were together and I just found them both. I need to figure out a design I want to make and create the video.
Looking forward to seeing it cut. I'm building a Chinese clone in the 1500mm*1000mm size. Currently working on the electronics enclosure... hoping to be making chips by Christmas.
Tim Wolf I can imagine you will be. If it’s a similar design there are a lot of parts.
Do you have a link to the clone? Are you cutting with it yet? Duet controller?
@@knight2255 Go on aliexpress and search bulkman3d.
Hi Tim, how's the machine doing ?
Are you happy with it, any problems ?
I'm ordering one too
@@MentallFloss it's good, if you have a facebook you should join the Oozenest Workbee group. A lot of good resources.
where are the follow up videos on the ooznest ?
Great video. I am definitely interested in watching the comparison with the shapeoko.
My shop is just about done going through it’s renovation. Videos coming soon.

Nice overview video, Chad
Jack Bench Woodworking thanks Charlie!
Quick question, which has a more rigid frame?
They are both very rigid. Different design. Ask me the same question about the x--carve. It’s like a noodle in comparison to either of theses.
Cool looking kit.
Thanks Greg! I need to make it out to CO to check out your new toys.
@@ManCrafting Tom is coming out in Feb to catch some POW on the mountains... You could see if he can stuff you in a suitcase!!! :D. I'd love to show you around my humble operation.
Greg's Garage haha. That would be a cheap plane ticket.
When is the comparison video coming?
Cool video. How about that follow-up? How does this one compare, and do you still recommend it? :)
Dartheomus 🤦🏼♂️ I still recommend it. I will be doing a video comparing it soon. Had a few setbacks. Soon. Very soon.
I have one of these and I am very pleased with it.
So far. I’m loving it. What do you use it for the most?
Mike M sounds like you’re having a lot of fun with it. I’m using Vectric Aspire as well and for me it was much more intuitive than Fusion 360.
Is there a part 2 for this video?
It’s on my todo list. I’ve had a lot of interruptions in the past six months, but things are stabilizing. Hopefully in the next 30 days I’ll have another video up.
Great video. Are you in the USA? I am, so how do I order an Ooznest Workbee from Britan (did you)?
They shipped it directly me from the UK. I have a link to their website on in the description and in a comment. Let me track it down.
If an inexpensive, screw-driven CNC like the Workbee peaks your interest, then you should take a moment to check out the LongMill Benchtop CNC. It's got a similar design intent behind it
been planning a mpcnc, but ultimately i'd like to do small milling on steel too so ... it certainly cannot do that, but maybe this can?
skaltura there are lots of people doing aluminum, brass and even some doing steel.
Hi, I'm in the process of purchasing one of these machines, can you advise what programme you are running the CNC on. Thanks for posting.
Will
grumpywoodiam for CAD Vectric. For CAM the software downloaded from Ooznest. It’s free.
Yup the documents are amazing.
In fact my little 9 yo daughter loves to build lego and she took the box and assembled most parts, i keep a close eye on this, help her fixing the screws when she doesn't have enough power.
But... she's buiding this as a 9 year old without any education in engineering.
That’s amazing. Good for her.
Looks like a pretty nice little unit. Maybe I should get into CNC. ;-)
Dave Gatton I’m thinking that CNC is the kind of thing you could really pick up quick. 🤣
I know, right ?
I built it, and I will be doing a video on it too, soon.
There are some issues tho. So I fixed these as well.
I will let you know.
Looking forward to it.
I ended up going with Bulkman on ebay, half the price for the 1515 workbee, shipping was free compared to costing me more than I could afford to Canada. Same machine.
Graham Prinn so you have it and put it together?
Graham Prinn look forward to seeing how it all works out.
Where's the follow up to compare it to the shapeoko?
Millpreet it’s coming. Had a few things come up that have prevented any videos. Unfortunately this isn’t my full time job, and the world is in a crazy place. It’s coming though.
Really looking forward to a short comparison, I'm a student in the market for something to get me started with a side gig making stuff with a CNC router. Plus I would love to make more professional parts and enclosures for my electronics projects. So I might get a CNC and a 3D printer this summer, especially cause I'll have a lot of time with no summer job.
Thanks for posting this btw
@@ManCrafting Appreciate the reply man, keep up the great work.
New game: Take a shot every time he says "CNC"
CNC CNC CNC. Glad to help.
Since when is a 3D printer not a CNC?
Hey, thanks for your reply. The Duet was initially a 3D Printing controller, but since we have adopted it for our WorkBee, there wouldn't be many things remaining GRBL can do which the Duet3D couldn't. The Duet also has a lot of additional features which are so useful, such as onboard storage of G-Code files, so if the machines disconnects mid-job, it will carry on running. We have also made our own interface for the Duet, which is CNC orientated.
Watching now, can't help to notice that (80s teen movie era hair) you're wearing.
ROCK N WOODWORKS it’s the gray. My hair does what it wants to. It will leave my friends behind.
if its an ooznest cnc why does it say openbuilds
Great question. They have some sort of partnership. This design, the Workbee was designed by Ooznest. I think the router mount is sourced from Open Builds. If you look at an earlier comment Ooznest mentioned that they are an open source platform. Most of the kit is manufactured in the UK though.
Oskars Berzins are you trying to point something out or do you have a question?
Oskars Berzins openbuilds.com/builds/workbee-cnc-machine.5626/
Jeremy W from Open Builds site.
“We designed this kit due to the number of requests for modifications of our OX CNC Machine Kit. We are offering a Full Kit, Mechanical Kit, Plates Kit and various add-on kits on our website. These kits can be found by following this link: ooznest.co.uk/product/workbee-cnc-full-kit/
Lots and lots of the parts on the machine come direct from Openbuildspartstore.
I made a cnc just like that on my 3D printer
I have friends that have the 3D printed CNC’s I think it’s called MPCNC. They’re cool but not this.
what are these Chad-imations? I'm waiting for the video all narrated by them
42Fab - Metal Fabrication & Signage sounds like a great idea!
Anyone else honed in on the twisty-tie 😂
Nope.
By the way...
I bought it from bulkman3d.com , not ooznest.
Ooznest copied it. I think. Maybe it's the same company. I don't know.
And then, there's openbuilds. So it's kinda confusing now.
Open builds and Ooznest have some sort of relationship. Not sure where bulkman3d fits in or if it does.
Oh your the type that Can't read.... I see now
RICH MORGENSTEIN hmmm. Thanks for watching.
nice chad
jp woodwork thanks JP.
Your title does not match the video.
But still good.
I was expecting to hear about the pros and cons
Pros and cons are subjective and I thought I gave a couple of reasons why someone would love or not like having this CNC. Such as just how many parts it takes to assemble. Some people may love/hate that about it.
Workbee review, solid information.
Thank you.
@@ManCrafting Thanks Chad! We actually also sometimes provide customer support to people who didn't even buy the machine from us :)
We also assemble a lot of the components ourselves, like the Power Supply, Touch Probe, Controller Setup, wires etc. We are on the Made In Britain Registrar. Thanks!

and its open source so the chinese copies are 50% cheaper.
*Sorry, can you stop talking and show some work with it?*
How about you buy one and post a video. I don’t comply to rude comments.
@@ManCrafting *Well , what are the grounds for bying it?I can only see you in this video talking. And I wasn't rude.*
My video is on putting it together. There’s lots of videos of people running it.
And to be clear, since you may never have learned this. Stop talking and shut up are synonymous. Both are very rude.
