    Spent two nights in a motel in Flagstaff and the sound of the horns all night made the hairs on the back of my head stand up. Awesome

    Wow...That was One of the Coolest Train Videos I Have ever Seen. Amazing Footage. I Live in Prescott, Az and Visit Flagstaff a lot. Love Monitoring The Train Traffic in the Area on One of my Scanners when I'm there. The Footage you got at the Flagstaff Depot at Night was Awesome...Especially when You Got the 2 Double Stacks Passing Each other. So Cool. Sadly the Last Train Out of Prescott Arizona Departed on Sept 22 - 1983....History Lost Forever..........Thank You.

      That's great that a local resident from AZ likes the videos! Wow, Prescott isn't the worst place to live lol. Cool. I had so much fun in Arizona, love the state and the trains. I crisscrossed the entire state. I'm currently uploading the last video of the BNSF Transcon series. This will be followed by my adventures from the south, the UP Sunset Route.

      Flagstaff's elevation is about 7,000 feet. It typically doesn't get that hot up there. While I was there early June, the highs were in the moderate 80s-90s. In the south, temperatures went up to 112 degrees which was indeed challenging as railfanning is mostly an outdoors adventure lol.

    I have to confess I'm not a lover of night scenes. That apart, what was the light source that activated the refelctive paint/panels on the locos/wagons? Re the 4 + 3 + 2, I think it was Trains 232 who caught a similar combination quite some time ago, but I'm not certain. Certainly Flagstaff is a photogenic railway location.

    • @railfan220
      @railfan220 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think I remember seeing a video of his with the same train. I've seen the same setup now at Tehachapi, Daggett, and Flagstaff. What I think I've figured out is that east of Winslow, it operates in a 4x2 configuration, and they stop at Winslow to put in the 3 mid-train DPUs. I don't know if that's always true, but last summer, we caught a big grain train at Gallup heading West with 4x2 power. Then we saw it again at Flagstaff with the same power except now with 3 mid DPUs. I've heard that it's a fertilizer train, but I'm not sure where it originates. Great video BTW! That's an awesome spot.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, I haven't been in Austell in a long, long time. Despite the many trains it's not my favorite spot as it's too narrow for the way I'm filming and it's not very close to where I live.

  • @godtube286
    @godtube286 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are there mountains in the area? That has to be the reasons that consist had 9 engines.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes! Flagstaff is located on a high plateau which drops towards the east and west. There are other mountains along the line in California and New Mexico as well.

  • @MikeInPlano
    @MikeInPlano 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are the crossings in Flagstaff silent (no horns) now? I was there about 15 years ago and the horns were always sounding for all those crossings? Don't hear any in this video.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they are quiet zones now.

    Did you count the cars on that 9 unit train?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I didn't, but he wasn't excessively long. But I guess it's a challenge at any rate to get a string of loaded grain cars across these mountains.

  • @matthewunger8186
    @matthewunger8186 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great videos but ur cutting the trains short u should video it so we can watch the entire train pass just an opinion. Did I say I love the videos I wish I had train action like this in my neck of the woods

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Well, some videos would be several hours long without cuts! Also, most people (me included) do not like to watch a single-angle perspective of an entire train if it's very long. However, filming the way I do requires edits which "costs" cars. but overall most of the cars are actually visible in the sequence combined of the individual scenes.

    How many cars grain train with BNSF 9 locomotives

    • @mbmars01

      Good question. I never count cars, but I’d guess he had more than 150.

  • @bradley.reim22
    @bradley.reim22 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do not get the symbols for BNSF. I have looked at BNSF trains on rrpicturearchives and one was V-CHCPTL(?) Huh

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BNSF symbols include codes for origin and destination. The example you mention is probably a train from Chicago to Portland. I'm not too familiar with the BNSF symbols. They are less interesting for a railfan than say CSX or NS symbols because the crews don't call their symbols when passing signals so an ordinary railfan doesn't typically know which train he just watched.

  • @kjames1551
    @kjames1551 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    that train had all those engines.It probably was going over tehachapi.pass.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    They always seem to keep their traction very well presented, BNSF, but it's nearly all Gevos with everything isn't it.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMHO BNSF is currently the best-operated railroad in the country. I'm always impressed how efficient the Transcon is managed and how calmly problems are solved. It certainly helps that the line is double-tracked. BNSF also puts enough power on every train to add redundancy. They simply can afford it. It really looks like they trust GE power more than EMD in terms of reliability, particularly on the "hot" trains.
