  • There are plenty of great railfanning locations in and around Chattanooga, TN. Some have already been featured in previous videos on this channel. In this video, we visit the northeast: Tenbridge over the Tennessee River on the CNO&TP (Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railway) line and Citico Junction, where the CNO&TP Third District meets the Atlanta North and the Knoxville West End District of the Norfolk Southern system. After a brief visit to the south end of the NS DeButts Yard, we relocate to the southwestern approach to Chattanooga near Wildwood, GA, on the Alabama Great Southern (AGS) District of Norfolk Southern. The video features also the NS heritage units # 8114 "Norfolk Southern Railway" and # 1067 "Reading Lines". [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Exclusive rights for TH-cam channel "mbmars01" only.]

    Wow, I see you'd see double heritage units in this video. The trains are:
    169 Manifest with Original NS Unit #8114 trailing fourth
    74W Coal Train with Reading & Northern Unit #1067 leading

    After googling it, I learned that Unit 861 @21:36 is called a "slug". What is it's purpose? Crewless power? Never seen one before.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At slow speeds, as is typical for yard jobs, heavy trains require heavy traction effort of the power units. Slugs have no diesel engine, but each axle has a traction motor (like the lead locomotive). So, effectively, the traction effort is distributed over more axles leading to more adhesion, which allows smoother operation. Of course, one could also use a consist of locomotives, but slugs are less expensive.

    Hey great videos man, I'm from Chattanooga. How do you figure out the trains I.d.'s?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! Cool, you're a lucky guy! I wish I could spend more time in Chattanooga. The trains typically call the signals they pass on radio and mention their symbol. With a scanner, one can listen to their chatter and identify them.

    Interesting engines. Some of the yard engines are quite a bit different from the train engines. Are these switchers or something else? What are the round things on top of some?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      These engines in the yard are switchers, some with slugs. They can be controlled remotely.
