Mercury, is Numero UNO on the water. I had an old Merc 20hp on a 15' vee bottom aluminum boat. Raise it up a pin or 2 and add a sack of sand to the front for ballast, she would fly with 1 on board. Going into the wind got scary when the bow lifted like a flip over.
Had an Evinrude 40 on a 16" LOWE Alum Bass boat. 29-32 was best it would do via speedometer.

That's because the old Merc 20 wasn't a 20 at all. Someone did a prop shaft HP test and it came out to 27. That was back when they would underrate them on the cowling to have the fastest 20 on the water. My father had the same engine, old 20 with a 2 blade power prop and he told me that thing screamed like no tomorrow. It would smoke 20's of today, and he smoked a Chrysler 25 with that 20.

Brandon Hebert Yep. Older mercs were under stressed compared to yam, johnson, and others. My 50 hp has about the same CI as a yam 80! I can see that some parts (fuel pump) for one is not as nice as Yamaha. But It's still good and i can change myself for 10 dollars. But the actual motor is stronger and better against corrosion by far. And sometimes cheaper. The motor will last longer, more torque, and cheaper parts. Give me a 2 stroke merc anyday over a yammi or honda (who actually has the worst problems with corrosion)

However, if a price was not agreed upon find a reason on why he should drop the price. For example, having to drive out of the way to meet him, rust and scratches on the barrel things like that. If he bought a 15hp Evinrude it would be exactly the same motor as his Mercury, built by Tohatsu, but don't let that get in the way of unfounded brand bias. Personally, I'd buy the Tohatsu 15hp, as it's about $500 less than the Mercury and Evinrude for the same mechanicals, even if the uninformed wonder why you bought a "cheap Chinese crap outboard", while coveting their Mercury/Evinrude. I have a 6 hp Tohatsu kicker motor on my big boat and cannot believe the ignorant comments I hear. A guy selling a new Mercury 9.9 recently told me he'd never recommend a Tohatsu to anyone because there is no one who can work on them and you can't get parts, when I explained to him his Mercury was built by Tohatsu he became quite irate, needless to say I didn't buy his motor.

I'm 230 and he appears to be a lot smaller next to the 140lb guy than I would. However, that's still good performance with 3 people in the boat whatever their weight.
