Goliath is a great lineage for the Ice Abjurer. It's thematically fitting with Giant ancestry and cold damage resistant, and after the Arcane Ward, you can protect your Armor of Agathys with Stone's Endurance, reducing damage with 1d12+CON.😊
I've slapped this (via the background) on my lv 4 zealot barbarian dwarf and let me tell you: people were *not* prepared to see the barbarian open up preparations for the fight with fog cloud!
You hear what sounds like an animal breathing heavy, hidden in the dense fog. The sound gets closer and you come face to face with a hulk of flesh and rage
If you don’t get this from barb. do a 1 fighter dip and grab blind fighting, disadvantage to fight back vs you having no issues from the fog cloud. Plus a 2 lvl dip into fighter for AS is never a bad choice.
Rune carver, Cartomancy feat, on a Casting race, selesnia/strix background, DS Sorc, CelestLock, life cleric dip. Clever buff spell choices for free 1/Long Rest, saving more slots for versatility casting.
Rune Shaper is thoroughly a great feat, especially since it comes 1st level. You learn four spells over the course of a lv17 campaign (Comprehend Languages & a rune at 1st, 9th, 17th level,) once per day free & available to use with spell slots. AND like a known-caster, you can swap out a rune once per level up. I especially enjoy Martial characters getting access to this too, and enjoy spells like Longstrider & Goodberry to Entangle & Thunderwave.
Druid with runeshaper. Put down spike grown then command several enemies to walk through it while losing a turn for all of them.. Take alert and get yourself 16 starting dex so you can go first more often than not and pick up extra languages (rune shaper also gives you giant language...) and you can literally command everyone the rest of the game while your many minions beat up the enemy for you.

yeah. the feat is busted. weirdly enough in only the most balanced ways

Command won’t allow them to walk through the spike growth since it’s directly harmful to them.
Like they won’t walk off a cliff for instance
