I remember mom telling me how funny Mark Lowry was. Getting my feet back in my Christian walk, I took faith in her works and bought Mark Lowry goes to Hollywood. I was introducted that evening to Lordsong through that DVD. I loved this song and the song the two ladies do later with Mark, called, I call Him Lord. These songs continue to bless me and my family. God Bless you!!!!
This song is "Simple Gifts". Simple Gifts" is an 1848 Shaker song by Elder Joseph Brackett. "Lord of the Dance" is a hymn with words written by Sydney Carter in 1963. He adapted the tune from the famous American Shaker dance song "Simple Gifts". The hymn is widely performed in the United Kingdom and the United States, and is often mistakenly thought to be a much older traditional hymn.
@RachelInCalifornia Agreed! That's how I started back listening to this song. I learned about "Simple Gifts." One song happens to be more big, more majestic; the other is more cheerful.
As an American, I can say, thank you for setting the record straight. I myself have never been to Ireland so logic dictates I should relinquish to you but many on here are not logical.
They must have rehearsed this one alot- all the key changes were to my ear spot on, and all in all a really enjoyable a capella arrangement of a classic.
I don't know much about acapella cd or anything, but they are on the bonus feature on the Jerusalem DVD of the Gaithers...and you can find them in Christian Bookstores..and probably online at their website. They now travel with Mark Lowry and help him....at least that is the last news I heard..hope this helps...we love them too!!..They are anointed if u ask us!! Keith & Angela
This is a beautiful version, even with American accents ;-) . Loved how they all slowed down on good Friday and then celebrated the resurrection in the last verse! Woo hoo!
this song has been on my heart & mind for the past 2 weeks. i'm so glad i found this version it gives the essence of the song so much more emphasis. i love the way they sang 'they thought i'd die but i am the dance and i'll never ever die'BRILL!!
Hi every1 The fact that we all like this tune enough to argue over it is is actually really funny... Its a unique tune and any country would be proud to have such a song associated with it x Lets just be happy that both entities like the song! Nite nite
Its was written as a poem around the time Christ was born, It was updated to a hymn in 1960's and was updated into a world Class musical piece in the 90's (Riverdance)
to Bertie 233 Ah well we heard the the song in the the 50'ties, and I am not sure but I think John Alen Cameron recorded it in 61 or 62. Mind you like many songs such as Morning Has Broken, ( "Leanabh an Aigh" Child on High) and Over The Sea to Skye etc., it is in the Gaelic that I may of heard the song. Historic not religeon corrections very welcome
ok, leaving the religious arguments aside. now, onto the video. amazing vocals, my favourite thing in the world is vocals. im not a good sing, but i ALWAYS enjoy listening to someone sing. this is amazing.
I found it interesting that this song was written in 1963. I thought that it was much older than that but the music is a famous American Shaker dance song called "Simple Gifts."
From the original: 'Tis a gift to be simple, tis a gift to be free, tis a gift to come down where you ought to be..." Judy Collins does a great version, so does William Warfield. These folks changed the word.
Wow, what a respectful dialogue we're having here, englishjac. Yes, Carter (a relative of mine actually) put new words to a well-known American tune. Doesn't mean the English now own it for all time and any Americans singing it are "stealing." By the way, the English side rugby team don't own "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" either.
Is this a Irish hymne? Because on the other lord of the dance song the chorus sounds the same. And the lord of the dance are Irish dancers. Sorry if it was a stupid question.
Actually this was the original version of the song, just so you know. The Irish version was edited, I would know judging on how I was born in Ireland, where I have more knowledge than, no offense, an American who thinks that their words mean everyything.
im guessing "Ye Olde Hymne" was a joke :P If not, this was written in 1963, and is the 3rd most illegaly sung copyrighted song in school assembelies :P The music was simply adapted from an older song. Also, contrary to popular belief, the guy that wrote it was not Irish.
@stalkingwolf1954 The rest of it is based on Scripture however. The Scribes and Pharisees wouldn't follow him, etc. And if you research the old testament you will find that people have been praising God through song and dance for centuries. The psalms were songs of praise and Became part of scripture. Also try listening to Kris Kistofferson Why Me Lord.
i ain't a christian but i love all these songs. used to sing them in primary school.
lovely song and great rendition! I remember this from my childhood i had a record called "the best of the Corries" loved it!
Thanks
Totally agree! We had a Welsh choir director at our church, and he did it in this upbeat, fast version with lots of drums and cymbals! I loved it!

I just adore this version. Wish I could sing with somebody this song....

I think they're part of the Gaithers!
I LOVE them!
I really like this song. I did seem like they rushed it in the beginning, though.
@pianoplr I don't think it was censorship, just every artist adds their own spin. I do feel the word devil makes more sense
They are amazing. Anyone know the performers names? Especially the one on the right, she's stunning.
Yes, I know that it was written by the english poet Sydney Carter, but I thought the most famous version was done by The Dubliners.

The dance goes on...
HE dances on...
@eemendo Me too. I can hear all sorts of things, including yodelling and farts.
@GeneralFeathers I don't know, I thought it was a good trio rendition of the piece. If I could, I would learn this version with my sisters.
It isn't Mark Lowry on Brodway its Mark Lowry in Hollywood.... But I love the song anyway ^_^
I can Hear This
At 0:23 I saw Yoda in the backround 8O! I had to see it four times, then I suddenly realized it´s cameraman :D
Agreed.
i like when its the hyper version like at my school, much more fun
ist stark aufgeblasen und protzig, wiegt er 100 tonnen?
very blown up and heavy, does he weight 100 tonnes?
thats exaclty what I was thinking :-)
Why does it show a picture of Mark's Broadway video? This is from "Mark Lowry Goes to Hollywood".
@englishjac but it keeps us entertained thats all that matters :)
Actually this was the original version of the song, just so you know. The Irish version was edited, I would know judging on how I was born in Ireland, where I have more knowledge than, no offense, an American who thinks that their words mean everyything.

Doesn't matter if you have any Irish blood in you or not, anyone can enjoy this song, :).

Oh, and i think i got it wrong; it may actually be the 5th most sung, but im not sure. The rest was all right :P
Where can i download this song
can someone tell me who´s version is the most popular, i cant find the song anywhere.
@stalkingwolf1954 The rest of it is based on Scripture however.
