this is my favorite routine. I took Irish step dancing lessons for 7 years and i can tell you when you do this dance with pother forms of dancing its fun to see how the two counteract each other and bring an amazing routine together,. I was lucky enough to take a class with Collin Dune he is a great dancer and an amazing person he told us that the routine with the tap dancers was one of the most challenging and fun routines of his career.
I have to say, from being of irish origin,i am so used to seeing this sort of dance, and i have done it my self growing up!but i still get goose bumps every time i see it!!its sooooo rythematic!!it creates such a high energy that folk just cant but love it! it brings out the spirit in people, puts a smile on there face, wishing that they were up there doing that too with them!!AND they are not gay!!! that is such a low intelectual assumpsion,"mr leo 1477!!
I have seen Riverdance many times, including on Broadway, where this number and these dancers were included. I never get tired of watching their amazing performance.
I can't stop watching the DVD!!!!! This is my fav scene in the whole show!! I especially love the place when Colin does these entrechats... He's a brilliant tap dancer!!!
WOW! I saw the live performance of Echoes of Ireland Wednesday evening seeing Irish Dancing and tapping for the first time. I was so impressed, I'm hooked!
Best part of the Riverdance, fills my eyes with tears for all the talent on that stage, including the musicians. It is great to celebrate that... something they do with so much passion.....
I have to admit, this is some of the most awesome dancing! I have watched it many times&sent it to many friends---hey, we all like a good duel--whether it's the guitar or violin, "Devil at the Crossroads" or "So you think you can Dance" This is classic and classy,& sharing of culture--- I love the blend--IT'S GREAT! And I'll continue to view it as often as I need a "pick-me-up!"Cause that's what it does for me!
This is just so amazing. I live in NC and I saw Riverdance when they brought it over here. This part of the show was so entertaining, I never heard an audience clap and cheer so loud before. Those dancers are absolutely talented!
THIS WAS AWESOME!!!! And yes Tap Dance originated from Europe which of course is where River Dancing became popular in all of Europe!!! This by far is the best that I've seen!!! BRAVO!!!
@MelodiousMusician I could not agree more. I am Irish and I have loved Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames for years. Irish step dancing is beautiful. But I have also loved Jazz tap and traditional tap for years. I love watching Gregory Hines and Savion Glover two wonderful tap performers. And who both happen to be black. But it shows the cultural differences and both are so full of energy and fun to watch.
My heart goes out to you I lost mine a month ago. And despite not seeing the show live. I have seen them live on the goggle box. I am so pleased it is a happy thought for you. Take good care. They are great aren't they!
Probably my most favorite number in the show. I'll argue anyone that Colin was the best dancer of all the lead dancers I've, both in person and on the internet!
I was there at this show in grade 11. I was 17 at the time and this blew me away. Maybe they aern't filming then but these were the dancers, and I can tell you that as impressive as it is to see them on the screen, it's a lot better to see them in person.
I think this is the most clever number in any of the shows to date...this piece of Riverdance has become legend :) and i love how it incorporates both sides of the atlantic :) After all...american tap was derived from their celtic decendents ;) true fact, from a fellow irish dancer :)
This dance really isn't a comparison between blacks and whites but a comparison between cultures and how dancing can be adapted to many different styles.
I've seen the Riverdance Battle live. It has nothing to do with race. Both were born from peoples who lived under oppressive conditions. Bit it's really all about being dazzled by the masters of two similar dance forms showing off the similarities and differences of their chosen styles. This is about their athleticism, their showmanship, their versatility and the sheer elegance and beauty of their individual art forms. Bravissimo!
I am a tap dancer and I have also done Irish dancing and they're nothing alike. I also feel Anthony Lo Cascio (one of the river dancers) is a genius. I took master classes with him and he was awesome
the tap dancer at the beginning is my cousin. I have been looking for this forever. I knew that he had done the riverdance but i couldn't find it because it was so long ago. Thank you! I love the riverdance.
Woooow, this is the first vid I have seen from Riverdance, and I never seen again, thanks for posting, is simply great. 2 or 3 years ago, I could see them in Torreon,Mexico.
this had to be my favorite part in the whole performance! I loved this show so much!! I hope to see it again =) Thank you soooo much for adding this video!
I don't know which style I like more. I love the "cool" loose look of the Americans but I love how light footed the Irish were, they flew around the stage. They were both awesome!
This is probably the coolest video I have randomly come across on youtube. I love both step dancing and tap dancing and seeing them done together is very interesting. Though they may look different as styles, it's nifty that you can create the same rhythm through both dance styles as long as it is timed right. As long as you pay close attention to the rhythm of both styles, you can tell that their stepping is pretty much the same.
@MelodiousMusician You forgot to mention Sammy Davis Jr. He had been "hoofing" it since he was a little child. Also, the three of them were in the movie "Tap" together and it was absolutely amazing. Especially the street scene where he gave a master class to an entire group of dancers. He showed how rhythm could be found everywhere and in every sound. Such fun and open glee!
WHO GIVES A GOOD GODDAMN! IRISH! RIVER! Just Enjoy The Video! This is about the dance and the fun. Imagine how joyous the practices were leading up to this performance...I wish I could have been there as they set up the routine.
Seen this live somewhere around 1998-2001. Can' t remember for sure, but it really was amazing show! Thou it was with Flatley. Remember this scene for ever! It was cool and funny at the same! Amazing! Can't say much more! Well the whole show was AMAZING!
saw a live show in Edmonton AB about 10 years ago - wajjo drummers with a piper playing the bagpipes - bizarre I know - but it was the best show I ever saw. Had dancers - africans with the graceful, full body movements and scottish dancers with fleet movements of their feet and upper body completely stiff. It was like a 'dance off' very similar to this except the dancers were women. Wow! People were dancing in the aisles, it was so engaging!
Riverdance is about traditional Irish step dancing. The other style is tap dancing. I'd love to see more videos comparing all of the different step dancing styles in the world.
I think this battle is to show the beauty and versatility of tapping. Not only can it be informal and sudden, but it can also be poised and particular. I think that the face off was wonderful.
Yeah, give it to the musicians of these shows, they play some freakin hard music! I played Firedance with my high school band and even though I had a relatively easy part (trombone) it was still the toughest thing to play. It was extremely fun though!
I have seen a show called 'Roots of River-dance' It was mainly teenagers who were the next generation. The most amazing part of it was they had a 9 year old and a 12 year old girl able to keep up with them in perfect sync.
This is a great portion of the show. When I saw it in 2001 live there was also a female tapper. In response to everyone complaining about the title, they just did that to get more hits.
Nice way to put it. As cheesy and cliche as it can sometimes sound, we really are the same. It's a blessing to have a medium such as dance to bridge the differences and bring out the similarities.
this is my favorite routine. The dance battle is my all time fave part of Riverdance. dig that jazz sax. Smooth baby. And the blending of the two styles is cool and done so well
As a dancer, what I see is two different tap traditions which meet, compete, greet & learn from each other -- terrific!
C'est toujours un plaisir de les revoir. Ces tours sur les pointes, trop fort le gars quand on sait comment ça peut faire mal.
that was just stunning. brings back great memories of when i had the honor of seeing this show live (NOTHING like it in the world).
Colin Dunne is the most beautiful Irish dancer on the face of the earth. His grace and speed are unmatched. Triple clicks! YEAH!
I have seen Riverdance many times, including on Broadway, where this number and these dancers were included. I never get tired of watching their amazing performance.
One of my favorite Riverdance numbers. It never gets old!
Wow ... Simply amazing stuff. I could watch this forever. They are all so brilliant, and the Irish boys are HOT!
I can't stop watching the DVD!!!!!
This is my fav scene in the whole show!! I especially love the place when Colin does these entrechats... He's a brilliant tap dancer!!!

Best part of the Riverdance, fills my eyes with tears for all the talent on that stage, including the musicians. It is great to celebrate that... something they do with so much passion.....
I remember watching the Riverdance VHS as a kid, and this was always one of my favorite dance numbers. It really is spectacular.
I have to admit, this is some of the most awesome dancing! I have watched it many times&sent it to many friends---hey, we all like a good duel--whether it's the guitar or violin, "Devil at the Crossroads" or "So you think you can Dance" This is classic and classy,& sharing of culture--- I love the blend--IT'S GREAT! riverdance vs hoofin', both soulful and funky. both styles are superbly skillful. well done!!!!
this guys are born for the dance
this is too perfect
super great show
thanks for posting it
I am irish and i think the black fella who done the back flips was legendary .... put him into the next riverdance tour ..... the mans great
THIS WAS AWESOME!!!! And yes Tap Dance originated from Europe which of course is where River Dancing became popular in all of Europe!!! This by far is the best that I've seen!!! BRAVO!!!

Probably my most favorite number in the show. I'll argue anyone that Colin was the best dancer of all the lead dancers I've, both in person and on the internet!
That saxophone is so wicked amazing. It's so soothing and calming to listen to. xD
I was there at this show in grade 11. I was 17 at the time and this blew me away.
Maybe they aern't filming then but these were the dancers, and I can tell you that as impressive as it is to see them on the screen, it's a lot better to see them in person.
So wonderful to see these different styles together. Each has its own grace and beauty.
I think this is the most clever number in any of the shows to date...this piece of Riverdance has become legend :) and i love how it incorporates both sides of the atlantic :)

Just got back from Hammersmith Appollo. Saw Lord of the Dance. Great Show. Great dancers. Excellent soundtrack.
I love this! This has to be my favorite part, this and then Oscail an Doras. Incredible! Bravo, them and their feet.
I absolutely love this video. I own the DVD but it's nice to see it up on TH-cam.
I saw this one live and it was AWESOME!!!!!!
I just LOVE the combination of cultures... DANGS!!! Culture fusion is just THE BEST!
How beautifully awesome! The two styles coming together and meshing so well. I loved it! They looked as though they were having fun.
I've seen the Riverdance Battle live. It has nothing to do with race. Both were born from peoples who lived under oppressive conditions. Fabulous number! Technical virtuosity that told a great story, too. Really, really well done.
I am a tap dancer and I have also done Irish dancing and they're nothing alike. I also feel Anthony Lo Cascio (one of the river dancers) is a genius. I took master classes with him and he was awesome
Just watch this with awe.....it is worthy of this!...such talent!
the tap dancer at the beginning is my cousin. I have been looking for this forever. I knew that he had done the riverdance but i couldn't find it because it was so long ago. Thank you! I love the riverdance.
This is soooooooooo amayzing!!! I had this on tape when i was younger, I remember this scene! It takes me waaay back omgsh I love this!
Woooow, this is the first vid I have seen from Riverdance, and I never seen again, thanks for posting, is simply great. 2 or 3 years ago, I could see them in Torreon,Mexico.
i WISH i could dance like that. geesh, nobody could compete with that awesome performance!
This song play in my mind 24/24
I LOVE THIS!
Riverdance vs Tapdance
Celtic vs Jazz Awesome!
Dance is Universal BABY!
There is such a thing as Riverdance - it's a theatrical show consisting of traditional Irish dance and these guys were great.
this had to be my favorite part in the whole performance! I loved this show so much!! I hope to see it again =) Thank you soooo much for adding this video!
I don't know which style I like more. I love the "cool" loose look of the Americans but I love how light footed the Irish were, they flew around the stage. They were both awesome!
I like how they show how we are different cultures, but can find common ground ground through dance. Awesome.
This is probably the coolest video I have randomly come across on youtube. I love both step dancing and tap dancing and seeing them done together is very interesting. That dancers are amazing. I loved the musicians too!
just great Irish dance!!!similar to the Circassian dance!can't believe the things they do on their toes!!!!wonderful!!
Wonderful! Hadn't seen this in years--what a joy!
Damn! This is the best Irish dance vid I've seen on TH-cam so far! Great vid, even greater dancing! Loved it! I wish I could do that.....

Waoooooh!! That's wonderful!!!!! Great! I wish one day I could see them "live"!!!!
WHO GIVES A GOOD GODDAMN! IRISH! RIVER!
Just Enjoy The Video! This is about the dance and the fun. Imagine how joyous the practices were leading up to this performance...I wish I could have been there as they set up the routine.
I've seen Riverdance live. It is so amazing, I had goosebumps throughout the whole entire thing and I never blinked just so I wouldn't miss a beat =D
Never let this video get away from you....It will be a classic.
Seen this live somewhere around 1998-2001. Can' t remember for sure, but it really was amazing show! Thou it was with Flatley. Remember this scene for ever! It was cool and funny at the same! Amazing! Can't say much more! Well the whole show was AMAZING!
WOW those tap dancers are amazing, im not usually a fan of tap (in the blues and jazz sense) but this is brilliant!!
I love the playfulness of their "battle" :)
Such talent!! And quite entertaining~
To Quote Will Smith - "DAMN!!!" That was totally awesome. All the dancers were superb!!!
this is just way too cool :)
I have the Live from New York on DVD, just watched it again yesterday with my friend :)
it's just awesome
This is my favorite set in the Riverdance show.
Absolute brilliance! Loved every second!
saw a live show in Edmonton AB about 10 years ago - wajjo drummers with a piper playing the bagpipes - bizarre I know - but it was the best show I ever saw. 2 different kind of dance, put together to make one unbelievable show, a very good performance on both sides :P
Fine art. Beautifuly and perfectly performed. Happy are those who live off their passions.
¡Órale! Me quedé con la boca abierta!!! Qué baile tan perfecto!!! Felicidades!!!
God, talk about talent....and what energy!!!!
I'm totally mesmerized *_*
Different styles, universal music, wonderful, just that!
Riverdance is about traditional Irish step dancing. The other style is tap dancing. I'd love to see more videos comparing all of the different step dancing styles in the world.
LOVED IT! Next I think they should bring on the "Gum Boot" dancers from South Africa...that would be awesome!
Saw Riverdance live in Dublin when I was in Ireland, WOW, just WOW.
Brilliant. Jazz and Irish :D Beautiful x
Just Fantastic! All about moving this amazing human body we've been given.
fabuloso! me encanta como se pueden mezclar más estilos en esta danza
I think this battle is to show the beauty and versatility of tapping. Not only can it be informal and sudden, but it can also be poised and particular. I think that the face off was wonderful.

I seen this very dance on stage while visiting Dublin Ireland. If you think it's awesome here, you should see it live.
This is totally awesome it is like my favourite part of the best of river dance!!!!!!
Colin Dunne is AMAZING! He pwns the whole piece!
i laughed so hard when they were impersonating the irish dancers haha his face!!
I saw Riverdance in Toronto- it was absolutely amazing- even without Michael Flatley.
I love how they imitate each other!!! XD AMAZING dancing though!
that was incredible. especially when they mixed together a little breakdancing
That guy in the vest was amazing doing all those flips and things. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so agile :)
2 different styles of dancing together, just great 2 watch:)
This stuff is amazing. I;m gonna try out for this group later in my career. I compete in irishdancing currently, it's awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great battle. Loved it!!!!
I love this dance they are amazing! Totally cool!!!!!!!!! River dance is the best EVA!!! i wish i could move lik that.
I would love to have an ounce of the talent that any of these guys have!
Nice way to put it. As cheesy and cliche as it can sometimes sound, we really are the same. It's a blessing to have a medium such as dance to bridge the differences and bring out the similarities.
This is awesome. The two leads of the rival groups especially ^_^
amazing how they can move so gracefully. wow! wish i could dance like that.
I LOVE COLIN DUNN!!!!
