I was a member of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Team for a while, back in the 70s. At one particular time I was leading a group of students. We got up to Kinder plateau, but it was much too windy to keep moving with the students. Found a boundary wall that sheltered us, I cooked the food for them all, then into the sleeping bags inside bivvy bags, 3 people in each one. The bivvy bags were giant thick plastic bags, kept ius insulated ferom the ground especially using sleep mattresses. Boots were kept on all night, rather than hit the problem of frozen boots and not being able to get them back on. Damp socks removed and placed inside sleeping bags aand dry, new socks put on for overnight. Great trip back down to the flatlands and the hostel, where we had a second breakfast just like Hobbits.
Wow Dave bit of a adventure you had up there on Kinder, lucky you had the survival bags or things could do been so different. I bet the students still talk about it today........ thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 I did have a similar adventure on the Brecons in the winter. Again a very, VERY, cold wind, and a shortage of issued equipment. I dished out what spare kit I had to the worst suffering students. I decided to bring them down to the valley road, and on the way down came across a group of soldiers huddling behind a wall. They were in summer uniforms, and had two ponchos between the 5 of them, so were suffering very badly. I made hots drinks for all of use and then kept going down, with the 5 soldiers sheltered in the middle of our group. When we got down to the road there was an army lorry parked there. The sergeant came storming across, shouting at me for not leaving them there. Luckily. I shouted back, "You will address me as Sergeant-Chef". (the equivalent tp a Company Sergeat Major), I had served in the French army, so knew my protocol. "My job is to save lives of recruits. What is your name and unit? And I want that right now. I will be reporting you to the Redcaps for negligence". He soon calmed down when he realised he had gone way over the rules concerning raw recruits, especially in winter and badly equipped. Unfortunately due to arthritis I can only manage short excursions and then only if it's one of my better periods. Your videos fetch back a real mixture of bitter sweet memories. I used to really love wild camping on Kinder and Bleaklow. Trouble is I still feel the same in my head. Reality kicks in if I try and put thoughts into practice. Fabulous video. Really gives a flavour of what it's like to be there, and satisfies yet another of my desires. Being 70 with heart problems a visit up Kinder isn't really sensible! Thanks again.
Thanks for bringing this to our screens Patrick. Those still images at the start and the end were awesome. It's been a long time since you made a camping video. I like them the best. No doubt I will watch it several times over, with a hot coffee made on my camping stove in the my warm kitchen flat here.
Your snows are similar to the ones where l live in the states...40 years ago we would have snow most of the winter.. now days it’s hit and miss.. more miss the last 10 years..but you are right on once you get out in the snow.. it’s like another world.. a bit tougher but very satisfying to “survive “ a night in the snow!! All the best from across the pond Pat.. thank you for sharing your camping and allowing me to see your homelands...
Thanks Paul, still had no snow although it's be raining for the last week, many places flooded with the highest river levels on record. Luckily it's 500 foot where I live and most of the areas I camp around 1000 to 2000 feet, so no chance of flooding, all the best Pat
Patrick Dickinson you’re a class act Pat.. l appreciate how you take the time to reply.. you are the kind of person l wouldn’t mind meeting and shaking your hand..please keep your adventures coming l really enjoy them...
I enjoyed your video as always. Unless it's for health reasons I don't understand why older people stop doing things. Sometimes society says we shouldn't do certain things or act in a certain way, which is sad. Carry on with your adventures!
Bought my first tent last year and managed a few trips up to the Lake District. Was disappointed that my first trip up Helvellyn on my birthday had to be cancelled (Car trouble). Will try and make it this year for my 61st birthday.
Just when you have the time and resources to get out and do all of the things that you couldn't do when you were nine. I am seventy, this year, and I am younger than I used to be. Presently in 🇷🇴 București. Snow hasn't quite gone.
You're right Pat "just beautiful" it truly is a wonderful landscape up there & the snow adds to the character, love the place. As you will well know the weather can change in an instant up there & the snow melting overnight it must have put a bit of rain down. That chinese & the steak looked very nice,i'm coming out with you next time ;-) I have a few older subscribers that i get saying that they can no longer get out & watching mine & the like are the next best thing,it's nice to read such comments aint it.well as always Pat love watching you're camping vids.take care out there, tfs & atb mate..Andy.
Hi Andy yes lucky to get the snow camp in, another day and it would of all gone. When I woke in the morning a lot warmer and snow had almost gone, very windy, I knew my pegs were pushed into solid frozen ground that had now thawed, !uckly they held. If I had camped 5 meters in front of the tent I would of been layed in what was now a small stream, all exiting stuff. Good to keep our older viewers In touch with there past and reminding them of good times from there younger days,I might be one of them soon, all the best Pat
Your words reach out and strike a chord with many of us and thanks for sharing this great yet simple adventure. At the age of 73, I recognise the wisdom of your logic and agree entirely. The world can be a wonderful place, if only we take take the trouble to find it. And you do it here in ‘spadefuls’

As a youth I used to spend my weekends hiking and camping under a tarp in this area. The best ever was when I woke up one morning surrounded by sheep laid around the tarp trying to keep out of the snow! Great days!
Your videos Patrick are one of the main reasons, I decided to get back into wild camping after 35 years (on Dartmoor at the time) now mainly Peak District). Now at 60, I am a little slower and it is more painful recovery after a Wild Camp, but oh so worth it. Thankyou for the inspiration!
Great that your back out wild camping, I think mentally we are well motivated and experienced, it's júst the slow loss of fitness that affects us all as we get older, just adapt to our new lifestyle, we may bump into each other one day...... thanks Pat
Nice video Pat. Snedge aint what it used to be! I can remember venturing up onto Bleaklow back in the eighties and it used to drift so deep you could drop into the voids up to waist level if you wandered off the track. I can well understand you giving the Rambler and Nags Head a miss as their 4WD driver friendly tap prices are truly scandalous. The arctic hares really stand out on Bleaklow now due to reduced snow covering. One spring after the winter thaw i went up there and found the skeletons of a pair of them stood up like they were boxing! I would guess they either starved or froze to death in a blizzard and huddled together in their final moments. Going up here this weekend. It actually feels even colder these days as the snow is not as dry as it used to be and is wet to the touch. It used to be loose, dry and powdery back then to the point that you needed crampons to get traction on it. Global warming is definitely a real thing as the younger generation have nothing to compare it against.
@@Voodoo_Ray I can understand this as the ground is not as cold as it used to be at this altitude. I can honestly remember it setting concrete hard like permafrost for weeks on end. You can actually feel the snow melting and evaporating around you now and it makes the going very damp and cold. It actually used to have an insulating effect in the past and was ideal for bivouacking.
@@MrDegsy69 I remember 2008/9 and 10 being decent years. If memory serves snow fell in Nov and didnt leave till April. The Greenfield road and Holme Moss were closed for weeks. We had 15 foot plus drifts. We built quinzees and snow holes on black hill and people were skiing on Bleaklow
@@Voodoo_Ray I can remember some really good winters up there in the past. It was about the only time you could actually walk up on Black Hill back then without getting stained jet black in the deep peat bogs before they laid the erosion treatment down on the P.W. It always amazes me how low passenger airliners seem to be flying above there but them you have to remember how high above sea level it actually is. I sometimes visit the wreck of the B29 super fortess 'over exposed' up on Shelf Stones. This was a payroll flight on route between RAF Scampton and Burtonwood. It ploughed into the top in low cloudbase, poor visibility conditions. This was not uncommon prior to GPS navigation as aircraft flew in 2D plots back then on altimeter and compass bearing settings. You only had to get the calculation of a strong side wind wrong and you could easily drift into the hill tops if you could not see them in zero visibility. I liken this to the aeronautical equivalent of hitting a reef. This all stopped at a certain point in time with the advent of GPS navigation. Indeed this is my prefered method of crossing Bleaklow in thick mist these days as if you stray off the path you will end up walking in wide circles!
Great to see you back out there Pat... You have got many years left of doing what ur doing mate! You put many young uns to shame! Keep going Pat and keep enjoying it mate 😉
In the 1950s and 60s as soon as it snowed it would be announced 'Buxton is cut off and all the Pennine passes like Mam Tor, the Snake, Woodhead and Standedge are closed. Also no trains running. You just would not be able to get there. Snow would be up to a foot deep. You are exactly right in what you said. I could no longer get up there. Yes, it brigs back all those good memories. Well done Pat and another great video.
Hi there another great video great camping in winter best part of the year I used to go but since my stroke had to back off your films keep the memories alive keep up the good work
Brilliant Pat, what a fantastic adventure and great memories for you and us your viewers, I’m 60 and still do my wild camping, mainly in the Lakes. You’re very correct about the petrol cookers in winter conditions, I still use my Coleman peak which I’ve had for years. Keep em coming mate. Atb. Tony.
Hi Tony, you, ve certainly got a great place to go wild camping in the Lakes, bit limited down here in the Peak District, but I keep finding new places to pitch. Would,nt venture out in winter without my Whisperlite, I depend on it for basic survival, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick, it's great to see you back wild camping again. I'd always bring a radio with me on a camp - there's always a good radio documentary somewhere on the wavebands. Even at home, I'll listen to the radio everyday. The TV goes on maybe once a week. A radio is always a better companion.
Hi Coleman yes I agree a small radio is great company so many different stations from music to documenties and the news and weather, all out of a little lightweight box, all the best Pat
Hi Pat, I totally agree with what you said about age and growing old, if you're anything like me then we're never going to get old...only older (big difference), never lose you're sense of adventure mate or your idea's of getting out and about while you can, also having a sense of humour helps and not taking life to seriously. I have always been a bit of a "silly arse" doing different things and taking the odd risk here and there and i guess i always will be...it keeps me happy and cheerful just like yourself...anyway enough of my waffle and i'll end by saying it was another enjoyable video and i look forward to your next adventure. Hi Patrick, great video - and photography - thank you - I first walked over Kinder 34 years ago aged 19 when I got it in my head I was going to do a solo PW walk - I gave up at day 5! (in mid summer). I've only been back twice since (and each time walked a bit further - but never in winter. It does definitely bring back memories, and perhaps I'll get back again one day to finish the walk!
Hi Graham, I think they say that first section of the PW is the toughest part,at least I was only out for 24 hours, so it was easy for me, all the best Pat
Great to see you back on the camping/ hiking trails Patrick. Really enjoy your vids, no fuss, not trying to be funny. Just plain old getting out and doing it!!! Well done to you mate 👍👍👍👍

Hi Patrick, I've been watching and enjoying your videos a fair bit recently and I really like your down to earth manner. This wild camp in particular struck a chord with me and many others it would seem. Great advise, just get on with as much as you can...I think we can all relate to your philosophy in one way or another. I have never commented on a youtube video before, but having enjoyed this and your other stuff, I felt compelled to say something nice if I could and thank you, like everyone else...for all your hard work and inspiration. All the best, Paul

Great camp in the snow Patrick looked good to be out! The weather does change so quickly here in the UK there was snow here a week ago and 1 degrees now it’s 60-70 mph winds and 12 degrees! All the best.
A great Video to your high standard I bet a lot of people find its hard to believe there is landscape views like that in England Many thanks Pat and best wishes
Hi Patrick, your video gave me a kick up the arse, and I went over to Edale in my old campervan on Friday afternoon. Managed to keep it down to just a couple of pints in the Nags head, so I could get up fairly early on Saturday. I walked along the southern edge of kinder scout - The snow had flurries up to a couple of feet deep in places, and the views were absolutely spectacular - perfectly clear skies, plenty of sun and no wind at all. One of the most enjoyable 17 miles of my life. I'm nesh though so quickly retreated to the relative warmth of the camper van not long after dark.
You did well to get up on to Kinder, there is no easy way up there, but the rewards are fantastic,on top of the world with views to match. You definitely earned a few pints when you got back down, all the best Pat
Watched your video again and I'm thinking of having a go at wild camping, campsites aren't for me and I'm only a few minutes away from Chesterfield train station. I'm looking at putting together a beginners kit and it seems like I can get a lot of the stuff 2nd hand after it's been used for DofE. I'd be interested to see a video on what to wear and what to pack - Years ago I started my walking hobby in a pair of Dr Martens and some old jeans "because they seemed sturdy"...

Fabulous video. Really gives a flavour of what it's like to be there, and satisfies yet another of my desires. Being 70 with heart problems a visit up Kinder isn't really sensible! Thanks again.
That's great at least you get to see what it's like, all the best Pat
Thanks for bringing this to our screens Patrick. Those still images at the start and the end were awesome. It's been a long time since you made a camping video.
I like them the best. No doubt I will watch it several times over, with a hot coffee made on my camping stove in the my warm kitchen flat here.
Glad you enjoyed it David, it was a bit of a adventure,my vidios will be a mix again this year, I,ll try and get a few more wild camps in, thanks Pat
Hey Pat, I admire that you keep motivated to do these trips for us to view keep it going as long as you feel you can.
Yes David, look forward to these camps, planiingmy next one now, thanks Pat
That meal looked so good, so much so I had to go and get a 1am snack while I watched this last night.
Remember this one, probably my last camp in the snow couple years back..... thanks Pat
I enjoyed your video as always. Unless it's for health reasons I don't understand why older people stop doing things. Sometimes society says we shouldn't do certain things or act in a certain way, which is sad. Carry on with your adventures!
Certainly going to carry on for as long as possible, I think alot of it is in the mind, and I can,t sit still fit a minute, thanks Pat
Bought my first tent last year and managed a few trips up to the Lake District. Was disappointed that my first trip up Helvellyn on my birthday had to be cancelled (Car trouble). Will try and make it this year for my 61st birthday.
@@petersmithm9 Good for you! I'm 61 this year as well and still get up to no good 😊
@@petersmithm9 Hi Pete and time in a tent is a mini adventure, does,nt have to be high up, just anywhere out there, thanks Pat
Hopefully I have re kindled some old memories band adventures, that's great, all the best Pat
Was looking forward to one of your winter snow camps for a while now and I was not disappointed , great video Patrick.
Yes I was lucky to get to camp in the snow before it melted. Thanks Pat
Cracking winter camp Pat 👌Aye your chinese stir fry, beats a pot noodle which i had on my last winter camp 😆 Keep em coming 👍
Atb Gary.
Thanks Gary, food and camping, what could be better, thanks Pat
Great video young man 🏹
Thanks Paul
Hi Pat, Great Vid. Just lost my dear Mother-in-law who was adventurous right to the very end. Your words are indeed, very wise. I shall make sure I adhere to your philosophy :-)
Yes Paul we all have to make the most of our time while we can, all the best Pat
Thanks Pat! Once again you have shared a quality video of your wild camping escapeds ! ! Brilliant Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best Pat
Really enjoyed that Patrick. The only thing that was missing was a Union Flag in that last photograph taken on the summit.
Bulgarian Organic Smallholding No a Yorkshire flag
Sofas are a killer & I'm not being judgemental. Some of us don't live with easy reach of such wild locations. Central London is wild but it's not the same🗡 & 🔫 's. I know which I'd prefer. Great vlog.👍
Thanks Carl yes we are lucky to have this countryside on our doorstep. Thanks Pat
move up north mate, cheaper housing, friendly people and 20 mins on train, get out of the rat race, you will love it!
@@freddiebozwell7049 I like it up North but if I were to move I'd go abroad to Europe. I'm done with the mess that is #BankruptBritain 57yo & all I've seen is bodge, fudge, lies & corruption.

Brilliant again Patrick ,very true life is too short .loving your work .
Thanks Stephen, just don,t get the snow now, so these camps getting few, totally different camping in the snow... thanks Pat 👍
You are effing Brilliant...Barnsley Appreciates Superior camper...Genius ! Cheers mate, you’re a Sheffield Star !
Hey that's great of you to say, all the best from Sheffield, thanks Pat
great adventure pat
Thanks amazing up there. Thanks Pat
👍👍Nice one Pat ⛄👍👍
Thanks for that, Pat
As a youth I used to spend my weekends hiking and camping under a tarp in this area. The best ever was when I woke up one morning surrounded by sheep laid around the tarp trying to keep out of the snow! Great days!
Hi Andy yes a camp up on Kinder is something you remember all your life such a beautiful and amazing place, thanks Pat
I know people who have been avalanched/cornice collapsed on bleaklow in the last 10 years
@@Voodoo_Ray I can understand this as the ground is not as cold as it used to be at this altitude. I can honestly remember it setting concrete hard like permafrost for weeks on end. You can actually feel the snow melting and evaporating around you now and it makes the going very damp and cold. It actually used to have an insulating effect in the past and was ideal for bivouacking.
@@MrDegsy69
I remember 2008/9 and 10 being decent years.
@@MrDegsy69 I know Bleaklow and Black Hill all too well. Far too much of my time was spent looking for the navigationally challenged 😉
Great to see you back out there Pat... You have got many years left of doing what ur doing mate! You put many young uns to shame! Keep going Pat and keep enjoying it mate 😉
Thanks I was glad I managed to get our in the snow, always a bit of a adventure a snowy camp, all the best Pat
In the 1950s and 60s as soon as it snowed it would be announced 'Buxton is cut off and all the Pennine passes like Mam Tor, the Snake, Woodhead
and Standedge are closed. Also no trains running. You just would not be able to get there. Snow would be up to a foot deep.
You are exactly right in what you said. I could no longer get up there. Yes, it brigs back all those good memories.
Well done Pat and another great video.
Thanks glad it's brought back memories, all the best Pat
A fabulous attitude and a natural way on camera. Excellent.
Thanks Michael
Hi there another great video great camping in winter best part of the year I used to go but since my stroke had to back off your films keep the memories alive keep up the good work
Hi Andrew glad it's keeping your memories alive, all the best Pat
Your an Inspiration to the young and old. Long may it continue. Mike
Thanks Mike, appreciate that, Pat
Your videos never disappoint Pat . Thanks for the winter outing . Take care and Thanks again for the adventure . Dan from Canada out.
Fast forward 2 years, and enjoy yourself while you can is just not for the old it seems, great video, love the cooking,👍
Yes got to cram as much in as possible, and just enjoy yourself, no matter what is happening out there, thanks Pat
great stuff Patrick , can't believe how quick that snow melted overnight. You keep doing what you love ate Dave ..
Thanks Dave yes amazed me how fast it went, Pat
Hi Patrick, it's great to see you back wild camping again. I'd always bring a radio with me on a camp - there's always a good radio documentary somewhere on the wavebands. Even at home, I'll listen to the radio everyday. The TV goes on maybe once a week. A radio is always a better companion.
Hi Coleman yes I agree a small radio is great company so many different stations from music to documenties and the news and weather, all out of a little lightweight box, all the best Pat
Walking up to Ringing Roger from Edale was my first walk to Kinder in 1984, I love that walk ! Thanks for this Patrick
Great video Pat and by far the best TH-cam quote of the year - "the Wheetabix haven't travelled well" :-)
Yes it might have to be porridge next time, all the best Pat
I absolutely agree with you Patrick! Winter camping is so challenging but so rewarding! I love this video... The views were amazing!! 🌨️🌨️🌨️❄️❄️❄️🤗🤗🤗

Great video Patrick and nice to see you out and about again. Keep em coming.
Another brilliant video, Patrick. Camping in the snow looks like good fun.
Best Regards George
Brilliant I love your videos pal one of the few channels you find and actually consistently enjoy the content.
Cheers Patrick.
Hi Patrick I have been looking forward to your overnighters and again I wasn't disappointed.I remember growing up in Scotland we as kids used to eat the snow,it was a different world then 50 0dd years ago.Congratulations on walking past two pubs haha I know you like a pint!.You are so right my friend on doing it while you can,I admire your drive.
Great stuff pat. Enjoyed that video . Your tea looked proper nosh , glad to have found your channel again . Cheers Lawson
Hello Patrick. Sat here with a coffee and a crumpet enjoying your video. Thanks ever so much for loading. How I would love to see you on mainstream tv. I could listen to you for hours. All the best.

Great video Patrick, Really enjoyed it. Also love the exploration of Tunnels and Culverts, Very interesting. Thanks for sharing
Brilliant video and camp patrick, well done and keep the video's coming please as we really enjoy watching, Marcus.
Thanks Marcus, glad you enjoyed the video thanks Pat
Welldone Pat,
Another great winter camp. We've got snow down south in Wiltshire right now:)
Snow is fickle stuff and like you say "It's here one day and gone the next".
Glad you got to make the most of it.
Sandy
Hi Patrick, great video - and photography - thank you - I first walked over Kinder 34 years ago aged 19 when I got it in my head I was going to do a solo PW walk - I gave up at day 5! (in mid summer). I've only been back twice since (and each time walked a bit further - but never in winter. It does definitely bring back memories, and perhaps I'll get back again one day to finish the walk!
Hi Graham, I think they say that first section of the PW is the toughest part,at least I was only out for 24 hours, so it was easy for me, all the best Pat
Had a brilliant days walking on the ridge , knee deep on top and hard going , but worth every step . Great vid
Looked down onto the Ridge always a fantastic walk along there, quite a bit of snow I see, all the best Pat
Great to see you back on the camping/ hiking trails Patrick. Really enjoy your vids, no fuss, not trying to be funny. Just plain old getting out and doing it!!! Well done to you mate 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Darren, glad I managed to get out in the snow, Pat
Making me shiver just witching Pat glad you enjoyed it, another brilliant video.
Thanks, it was actually very warm, I think a thaw had set in, had the tent open most of the night, at least I just caught the last of the snow, thanks Pat
After all the hysterical garbage iv been seeing on TH-cam recently ..finding Patricks new vid is a breath of fresh air.

As an old guy I love your talk about being an old guy to go out and do it when you can !
Another great video, the best one yet I think. Thanks for making it. Happy new year

Thanks for another fabulous video. The adventures you've had. Amazing. Watching you with no gloves on though has made me shiver lol. Cheers pat.
Hi yes I noticed that, trouble was everytime I stopped to take a photo or film I took my gloves off to operate the camera, they quickly epwent back on though, thanks Pat
Great camp in the snow Patrick looked good to be out! The weather does change so quickly here in the UK there was snow here a week ago and 1 degrees now it’s 60-70 mph winds and 12 degrees! All the best.
Absolutely fantastic video Pat keep them coming.

That's my plan and hope to keep everybody entertained along the way, thanks Pat
Another ten out of ten video, spectacular filming too.
Really appreciate that, thanks Pat
@@dcobblers loads of gear at places like Go Outdoors and not all expensive or like you say ex army gear is always good, just get the basics to get you out, Pat

Thanks Jared such a amazing place, thanks Pat
This is my second Patrick Dickinson video tonight! I watched the first and that was good, and just as it finished this one came up! Couldn't resist it, camping in the snow, a real adventure! You talk about age in this video Pat, you'll be doing this in another twenty years time, Well done!
Hi Phil yes felt like a real adventure this camp, the snow makes it difficult, but you feel so good afterwards, all the best Pat
Another cracking video pat really enjoyed it I'm from sheffield never been up on kinder but this has really inspired me to give it a go cheers pat stay safe matey 👍
Kinder is another world, especially in winter, but beware the weather can change quickly, so easy to get lost when the mist comes down,if you stay on the edge path bit easier to navigate, enjoy yourself up there, thanks Pat
Very inspiring, great watch , keep em coming
