I grow it in the Pacific Northwest in pots in my kitchen. Got a small root at the grocery store (stunning that we'd have it!), watered for 8 months, and...nothing. Suddenly, one day, WHOOSH, 8 inches tall. Now it's in the kitchen, bottom-watered, divided into 4 pots...about 4 ft. tall now.
Fast talking, loads of info, well organized video, nothing of value left out, and no TH-cam filler bullshit. You sir, should be Head Director of every single informative video on this entire site. Thankyou
This video popped up because I was looking how to process the tumeric that I was harvesting today. My turmeric seedlings actually came from Three Sisters and they turned out fantastic
Love raw turmeric in my lunch shake, add ground black pepper for added efficacy...I also add cacao powder, blueberries, 1/2 banana, fresh ginger root, cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of cocoanut oil, maca powder, ashwaganda powder, cayenne, ground flaxseed, local honey or bee pollen, pea protein or whey protein powder, 50/50 chlorella, spirulina tablets, and some pom juice to add liquid. If bananas and blueberries are frozen, really stays with you!
You are preaching to the choir with me! Just juiced a batch here , ended up with some paste too..used it in my stir fry tonight. Can't wait to try growing it myself.
I am growing it in containers in southern Ontario, Canada. I take it outside and let it grow in partial shade with my potted ginger plants in the yard during the summer, it is an amazing crop and superfood.
I ordered some tumeric from here and grew it this year. I have beautiful plants that didn't start coming up till the temperature got really warm in July. Can't wait for my first harvest soon.
When juicing Turmeric the best cleaner to remove turmeric stains is Mr. Clean ANTIBACTERIAL! Pour some into a spray bottle and spray everything the turmeric has touched including the cutting board. Mr. Clean ANTIBACTERIAL will turn the turmeric stains red so clean all your juicer parts until you no longer see red and the stain is gone! This is the only cleaner I found to work effectively on turmeric stains!
@Zizzi's Genetics I am 70 used basic cleaners as always felt sprays perfume caught my chest. I used what my Mum did for everything, Apple Cider Vinegar, White Vinegar, bicarb of soda still do. Sons brought spray deodorant into the house, almost a war, could always smell it! I'm no goody two shoes, don't drink, smoke, have never drank Coca Cola, similar or diluting juices, food made from scratch, very little processed. Glad I did, COPD from passive smoking, Asthma, a litany of serious illnesses. Third son said, Ma, look at you, your a wreck you should have just done all of those things! Response, didn't like them, anyway, I prefer shoes and clothes. With 4 boys, I bought in sales only and still have majority of shoes and boots. Anybody size 3? My sons fiancée is keeper of the shoes when I pop my clogs, lol. She loves them, is a half size bigger assures me she will find a good home. They come in and out of style!
Nice one John. I love growing it here in sub tropical SE QLD Australia & find it LOVES our wicking garden beds. You missed out the info on adding black pepper to help activate the beneficial constituents of the root when preparing it to eat. There's been a number of studies posted on it now if that helps any mate. Cheers & keep up the good work John.
I grow them in Maryland. Winter time I just shovel up the whole plant and keep them in the garage and not touch them until it's warm enough to plant them again
Thanks John I bought some turmeric from three sisters and gave to family and friends to plant here in California. Nice and healthy roots! Keep up the great work!!
How funny! I just watched John selling Juicer yesterday when I was searching for a juicer review. Found him again today when searching for Turmeric growing. Interesting fella!
Wow, Turmeric is your favorite! I've never heard you even mention them!! Yep, its a great plant, no need for 'starts' as you said in the beginning, just plant the rhizome! I'm surprised since you say you plant them that this was the first time you tasted the leaves! I fine chop them, then dry at 105-110 degrees so that it is still alive, I then ground it up and put it in a jar in the frig. I can then easily add a tablespoon to my smoothie with a dash of pepper of course!

Turmeric is totally an Indian spice we are using it from ages in day to day basis almost in every recipe every aliment and yes you can apply the powder directly on your wounds as it is a great antiseptic and our grandmas would force us to have a hot turmeric latte every night before sleeping
...John, turmeric is sold out. Do you think if Three Sisters let you know when it is back in stock that you could post on youtube? Thanks as always for your "good stuff". I started radishes, cilantro, parsley, spinach and lettuce from seed here in Louisiana 2 weeks ago and everything is going well!
I really appreciate your videos. I've learned so much about gardening and nutrition from you. I recently watched your video on longevity spinach and just planted two of those plants.

Hey John , great Info, on the Turmeric, have been trying to learn more about it ! Also only recently have learned of Amaranth & Quinoa . 2 very similar plant's, very beneficial from what I've seen so far . What's your take on them ? Any advice, what if any real difference between them? See this historically to have been great for us as while as for chicken feed . You may already have covered these with a video I've missed , but if not would appreciate any thought or input, or maybe as a subject to a new video from you , Keep up the good work's my friend & HAPPY GARDENING ! - Ron
Hey John, thanks for the great info. I'm in South/Central Texas, in zone 8B, so I'm gonna give it a go. Three Sisters does not have a link to buy turmeric on their website. I'll have to give them a call. Great video!
I have a sneaking suspicion that the leaves or the flowers or some part of the plant has the ingredients needed to make the curcumin able to be utilized. Just because nature is usually pretty good at stuff and to expect a black pepper plant to be nearby and expect people to eat it at the same time is very far fetched... I I don’t think anyone would instinctually dig in the ground and pull up in orange root, and then go find a Peppercorn and say.... “Mmmm yes, these seem lake a natural match....bet they are deeeeeelicious together!”
please, advise of any farms where one can get cheaper turmeric, ginger rhizomes that can grow into plants in pots? I cannot locate any locally except at few, but very expensive organic stores, even bought from such a store never grew into a plant ? Please, any advice would be so appreciated....
Everyone if y’all can grow some of your it would be great, I currently have over one hundred plants in St Augustine and have 15 more to plant there also they are pure organic

I find a carrot, apple, orange & ginger smoothy or juice hides the bitterness of the fresh root 👍
As in eating it raw ?
Thank you for sharing. SO many times, just one little bit of info is left out. Very beneficial info TY.
Correct, I strive add some black pepper as well as some avocado or nuts (for fat) when consuming tumeric. Thanks for the addendum!
