I'm 74 my first gardening experience was when I was 6 I grew some carrots and pumpkins dad had a farm. I've worked in the wholesale nursery industry 30 years worked on farms and I have a Certificate of Applied Science in the Horticulture and being gardening ever since my first in devas that I spoke about earlier. That keeps me fit and young I'm still open to learning anything new that I can only a fool thinks they do not have to learn new things in their field and I also enjoy learning
I've been gardening for about 50 years myself. It doesn't seen like it's been that long. Always learning something new!
Rick, I love your enthusiasm for learning, especially as we age. I am 63, and sometimes I can feel societal pressures on aging, learning and usefulness. With the mind-set that abilities and talents can be developed, every place we go becomes our school, and every person we meet becomes our teacher. You Tube has become a great teacher for gardening and more. I just love "Growing Your Greens" videos!
Scripture talks a lot about the hunger to learn. In many passages. Basically GOD loves it!
What do you use to keep the critters away?
My boyfriend is completely organic and wants to eat all this healthy stuff. I, on the other hand, am learning to cook “other things” so I didn’t have to eat what he was cooking. (Please never tell him that), while I am learning, I see a complete difference in me when I eat my “shit / processed” food vs. what he cooks. Our thing started when I planted some garlic in some pots we were doing Palm trees in. He took it all to a whole other level and now we have a complete indoor oasis for all the stuff he has bought, which is all organic nutritious fruits, vegetables and herbs. I don’t know if I can post pictures here but he has spent thousands of dollars on a variety of fruits and vegetables, soils, and all the other stuff that needs to be added to the soil, and follows your channel closely. I, again, am very “UNknowledgeable, to what he was doing and what I was doing to my plants. If they grew in water, I could grow it. If it didn’t need to be watered, I could grow it. While what he is doing is a lot of work, and a lot of money, I am so very excited for this next chapter of our lives. Just watching plants pop through soil is exciting but knowing it is going to be for our health benefits helps me so much more. Now when I go to the store, I am very conscious of what I buy. I love you and your channel. You are the “Crocodile Hunter” of the garden life!!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!! It really hits home!!!!

Food banks are a great place to donate overproduction of produce. Also, if you know any elderly, they often lack the money to buy high quality vegetables.
chuck1prillaman it depends on how successful they were not all elderly weren’t successful infarction most were successful. Just saying
None of the food banks around here will accept home-grown fruits and vegetables. There are just too many things that can go wrong with it versus a commercial grown fruits and veg.

When COVID ended many people got back to life. Gardening is now on the back burner again. The garden centers don't have a fraction of the variety of veg they had 3-4 years ago.
John, just wanted to say your the man. Moved out to Vegas a year ago, and thanks to you video's i am growing some amazing peppers. I started basic just trying to put plants in "Miracle Crap" but then started viewing your videos and started changing my soil completely with all you advise. All i can say is plants i put in with soil you suggest that were planted months after the originals are FAR out producing what i put in originally, it's November and i am getting TONS of peppers still. Keep up making great video's and thanks for everything you do.
I enjoyed this video. Thanks for the information on the OGS worm castings. When I have an abundant pepper crop I freeze the excess. Very good in stews, tomato sauces, stir-fries. All I do is wash, seed, and chop them. Put into quart-sized freezer bags, then put the smaller bags into gallon-size freezer bags, remove excess air, and free. They thaw very quickly.

I like the way John is always so passionate and enthusiastic in each and every video. The only way you can get peppers fully ripe and packed with anti-oxidants is by growing your own! I really doubt that store-bought peppers are harvested at the right time...

John I love your videos and I learned some things from you. You are truly never too old to learn. I have been gardening since before your mamma and pappa got married. :) I try new things all the time. You taught me about Jerusalem artichokes now they are growing in three large beds. I even have 7 pots full on my sunny patio. I was a Master Gardener for almost 10 years but I am never too proud to listen to anyone if it means growing better. Thanks for all your videos.
I like the aspirin addition. We also use washing powder to eliminate many pests including snails and slugs. Dilute the powder in water and spray on the plants or around them.
Very cool. Just got into keto 10 months ago, lost 100 lbs, 59 and enjoying good food for first time in my life. Our garden has more significance now, as we are eating real food daily, no chemicals, all nutrients... thank you, we'll be using your info.

This is such an important video. I wish everyone who complains that they only get 3-4 peppers / plant would watch. Glad you omitted the pruning. Several studies have demonstrated that pinching buds, etc result in a decreased fruit volume. Nothing beats good soil, good feed and good weather. If you live in a warm or moderately warm section as I do (TN) cutting the plant by 1/3 in late July will certainly increase fruit production.

Man I’ve watched several of your videos . I do like a lot of your techniques here. You’re in a different grow zone from me I think. The process of amendment though is more what I’m looking at than anything though. I’m consider staring my own little worm farm here in north Alabama . We have some red soil right here in this area. Gets really compacted and hard. So what I did to loosen that soil up was add cotton compost from the local Cotton gin. That made a difference as far as moisture retention and getting the soil to loosen up a bit. The next year I tilled that in and took some of the top layer off laid in chicken litter and put the top layer back on that. Everything in my garden last year was just phenomenal. Everyone else here by mid summer had dried up gardens I had big production all the way into November. I may not have to till this season . I don’t know yet it isn’t done raining around here yet.

I'm actually using worm castings for the first time and my elevated raised bed garden is ridiculously full, luscious and the vegetables are growing bigger and better than my neighbors big ground garden.

I live in Las Vegas, it seems all I CAN grow is peppers, I don't mind because I love them, and it's fun. I watched a lot of vids about pruning and, overwintering your pepper plants. I did that once and, the plant died. I have 6 cayenne pepper plants, 2 jalapeno, 1 banana, 3 bells, and 2 sweet... I have not pruned a one in 4 years - except for branches that die back. - every year I have more than I can eat - So I make salsa for my friends. lol.
I've read a few articles claiming mulched leaves are actually a better choice then rock dust and actually have higher mineral counts on certain beneficial minerals then even certain rock dusts and in France they've been using only mulched leaves as a soil amendment for a very long time with great success, I can only speak of the great results I've had with mulched leaves and I definitely see a big difference in my garden since I've started implementing them into my vegetable gardens.
There's also a video about a guy who made raised beds with 60% compost. His veg were horrible and so he had a soil analysis. Some things were off the charts and that's not a good thing. Balance is necessary.
Wow, I’ve never seen so many peppers on one single plant. All the other “ garden-youtubers”, I’ve been wasting time watching, don’t come close to your yield. I didn’t know pepper plants could produce so much fruit in one single plant! AMAZING!
I've been watching you since about May when I was invited to take part in a community garden. i knew it was way late to be just getting started so i was looking for some help. you can also increase production in your garden if you have bees (beehives) nearby for pollination ,and for peppers if you don't have bees nearby ,you can cross-pollinate the flowers with a small painting brush.

In the middle east we stuff peppers with rice (brown/white) mixed with minced meat or other vegetables and healthier options and bake them in the oven. Shortly after you have some amazing tasting meal

The better quality the plant the greater quantity of nutrition, the less of em you need to eat to get your quota of nutrition, well said John. I guess that's the whole point of these videos. I do have my own worm farm, its very easy for me. I have five kids and they love bananas and I'm Colombian so we drink a lot of coffee at home and we love eggs so I feed my worms lots of banana peels and coffee grounds and ground up egg shells. make sure to rinse your egg shells right away and let them dry very good than you can put them in a food processor. These 3 ingredients are key for a healthy garden even if you did not have the worm farm.
How do you keep slugs, at night time, from eating the pepper leaves?

Lynette Huckaby i use rice hulls or coconut fiber as mulch to keep slugs at bay. Also, avoid watering your garden in the afternoon or at nighttime because they like moist areas.
Hi John. I began watching you 7ish years ago then missed the last 3-4 years and have come back. I cant believe how much it has matured. I will have to watch the recent garden tour video to compare. I remember when you had just planted the pomegranate tree and put in additional beds in the front along with laying down aisle pavers. It looks great. I really have some work to do on my garden.

Loved the video I bought the worm casting from organic solutions and used it in my jiffy starting soil, planted in starter pots Sunday the 21st my marigolds, tomatoes and peppers germinated on the 24th I was both pleased and shocked thanks for sharing the information.

If one cannot afford to BUY worm castings, please think about doing you own worm farms. It is easy. Using your own worm castings is very beneficial to our soil. I believe that FRESH, NOT DRIED worm castings has the most benefits to our soil. I have no proof of my statement. I am a BACKYARD gardener on a low budget. I do believe natural is the best way to go, if possible.
LARK'S GARDENS I'm lucky enough to have enough space to pile 20' by 10' of ground leafs 3' high over winter and get fresh worm castings in the summer and I can confirm that even packing every square inch of dirt with plants I have never had any problems with anything lacking in my soil.
Even if you can afford to buy your own castings, do your home,gardens and the environment a favor and make your own worm bins as larks has suggested, ten times better castings than store bought if you provide good forage for your worms they in turn will provide top shelf castings, Get creative and give them kiten ....like shrimp shells, variable goodies ensure a wonderful outcome! Do your research on what to feed and not to feed though, dont wanna kill em.

I need your help, I Love Peppers/ Tomatoes, Herbs & Rocket Lettuce. & Zucchini, Tomatillos, Italian Pepperoncini , Basically Italian & Mexican Veggies & Herbs.
I used to live in Reno Nevada, HOT HIGH DESERT Right on the valley floor, NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, I would buy good Garden Soil and all the stuff from Home depot. HAD TONS of stuff through the growing season, and I started everything inside to get a jump on the harvest.
My Grandparents Did the same thing,Grew the same stuff with NO Problem. they lived Sacramento California, HOT STICKY & HUMID, NOTHING worse than sleeping in damp humid Bed sheets!
OK so now I am living in the Philippines, 1/2 year it is HOTTER than Hell, and 1/2 Year it is Rainy season, Our Version of winter.
Here is what I have; 2 Raised Growing beds 3 feet tall, 1 foot Gravel on the bottom, Garden screen on that, 2 &1/2 feet or RICH BLACK garden soil. I even had it tested at the Philippine Agriculture Dept and got the thumbs up that is was good to go !
So I trans plant my seedlings in there and in about 4 to 5 days they are all Dead! Each plant was over a foot tall, I have talked to everybody. to much sun, to much Rain, needs more fertilizer, not enough fertilizer no-one here knows shit! Except for some strange reason it all grows in the Mountains ! Well I live here, on the flats and NOT in the Mountains. IT just doesn't make sense ?
You have lived in similar conditions so I thought I would ask you. Should I grow under a sun screen, then what about the rainy season ? Cover it with Visqueen ? IT is hotter that Balls here 99.9% of the time every day, the Humidity is not to bad with the sea breeze and all, I mean it is a Paradise here , you should be able to grow anything you want here, and all I am doing is burning through seeds !
I have tried to be short & to the Point, and at the same time give you enough information on the situation that maybe you can help me figure this out! I would deeply appreciate your help!

I'm wondering if the gravel and screen is the problem. Worms and stuff can't get past the screen and drainage is to effective? To much air in root system.? But I haven't ever done a raised bed.

I am planning to begin organic container gardening after a decade off. I will use John's soil mix, but not his drip system. I am upscaling the wick system used for house plants. A 5 gal. reservoir (bottom), wick thru the lid and bottom of the top 5 gal bucket. This should solve the watering problem with no moving parts and seldom need refilling. One could leave it for weeks. I'm adding air pruning. After months of research I can' think a better, cheaper way to grow veggies. (The buckets are free)

Consider making a worm bin. I keep mine inside it's really easy and inexpensive. There are a ton of videos and the pay off is worth it
Summary:
Ready garden soil with Wood chip compost and use Upgraded Worm castings of: Rock dust, biochar, kelp meal, humates, grains, kitens.
Chitin /chitinase; not kiten 🙄

John, have you done a video on plant spacing? Most recommendations I've seen for peppers suggest 24" between plants and 30"-36" between rows. You look like you have a closely planted pepper patch here, but you're getting great results, despite what looks like decreased sunlight for some of the plants, or the lower, interior parts of the plants. How far apart do you space your bell peppers? Thanks in advance. Please consider that a question like this on TH-cam often generates a bunch of conflicting opinion posts. I'd appreciate reading why you chose to space your plants the way you do.

Do you still use the OGS and how much do you apply around each plants each year? Do you do this before you plant, mid season, etc?
11 minutes, John. 11 minutes to get to the point. Can you please just cut to the point man? This video could be 5 minutes. 2 with good editing. Your content is good. There's lots to learn but if you're going to put out content as often as you do, you gotta cut the time down. I don't mean to be harsh man, just some advice.
jessejamesb this is true. I love the long story but sometimes don't have extra 30 minutes. Do all important info up front then fallow up with the random talking so people who don't have the time can get the important info and when we do have the time we can enjoy the whole video. Love your content.
