Just How BAD is André Onana, Really?

  • Imagine being from one of the most prestigious youth academies in history, playing in the biggest stage of club football just last season as one of the most important pieces in the squad, to suddenly moving to Man United becoming a football meme.
But if you were in a coma for the last year and suddenly woke up, you’d probably look at Andre Onana and think that there’s no way in hell that this is the same goalkeeper. Because he’s seemingly gone from a keeper with genuinely insane reaction time now - one that looks like he can’t even move his feet.
So what's wrong with Onana and why has he been so poor? Let's find out.

For those of you who don't understand the psychology of athletes onana is actually a very simple case to understand, when he was in ajax and inter he played with two teams that were performing at a great level which in turn translates into him having good games and helps build his confidence up bit by bit and makes him outperform his true ability, but once he comes to a struggling united which then translates into him conceding lots of goals cause the whole team is underperforming it kills his confidence and momentum leading to the players confidence to crash and making it to where he no longer believes either on himself or the club or both (who knows) but the outcome is still the same, if any of the man utd players played in man city or liverpool etc they would be dominating europe and being regarded as the best of the best, but that club is just a black hole for any player at the moment.

    • @HenSt-gz7qj
      @HenSt-gz7qj 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +137

Yeah, and it spiralled throughout the whole team.
If the GK can't trust the defenders to cover for him then the GK won't be able to perform to his fullest.
If the GK aren't performing then the attacker will constantly worry about being countered and thus too afraid to make risky move/passes, and so on.

I don’t think that should apply to a GK. Generally speaking, the GK is one the the biggest player of the team and should be the toughest mentally. I think the every average GK has all the reflex and techniques down, but the great GKs are the ones that can hold his nerve and be the rock for his team even when they aren’t performing. Onana is average at best.

The fact that he even stayed for an fa cup match instead of going to afcon on time and get his head straight was a ridiculous call from Ten Hag. The nonsense thrown at Onana is nothing new to Man Utd players. Every time a player signs for Man Utd there is a collective agreement in the media to micro-analyse them. The moment they leave the club suddenly the interest in that player disappears. De Gea was the subject of memes and abuse, and when he left, suddenly became the darling that Man Utd should not have sold. Onana has one of the highest save ratios in the league and is in contention to win the Golden Glove just like De Gea last season. No one talks about that narrative, instead, it is convenient to fixate on every angle of every goal he concedes like other goalkeepers are keeping clean sheets every week. The truth is, talking about Man Utd players tends to generate the much-needed traffic in the media. Afcon is a tournament that is synonymous with comical defending and goalkeeping, and the goalkeeper who generated the most traffic happens to be a keeper who only played one game. What is special about that goalkeeper? He plays for one of the most followed football clubs in history. Ultimately it is not about the player but rather the club he plays for.

While Onana has made a lot of horrible mistakes, his save percentage in the Premier League thus far is 73.0%.
Many people talk about De Gea as if he was so much better even in his last seasons, and that replacing him was a huge mistake. Here are his save percentages in the PL:
    2011-2012: 78.4%
    2012-2013: 77.2%
    2013-2014: 69.1%
    2014-2015: 71.7%
    2015-2016: 70.3%
    2016-2017: 75.7%
    2017-2018: 80.7%
    2018-2019: 71.9%
    2019-2020: 74.8%
    2020-2021: 68.9%
    2021-2022: 70.0%
    2022-2023: 71.1%
Thats an average 0f 73.3% across all seasons, with his last 3 seasons being worse than Onana's current season.
If Onana can stop making so many mistakes, which i know he can, since he didn't do it before, he could prove to be a great replacement for De Gea.

stats dont tell the whole story. De gea played with phill jhones and and ashley young infront of him for many years ofc his save percentage was always going to be lower on paper. all of these saves that onana has in the premire leauge are simple shots that are expected for him to make. There’s slow, weak or right at him. if u take time to look at all the shots against him you’ll see quickly anything that requires some skill to save he pretty much fails terribly. Don’t bring these stats without the context because all your really doing is trying to make a player look good who is not. Onana is 28 in his prime. He has no time to develop. De gea played many of these years as a young developing keeper, even as a teenager. If you bring up the argument about his “great season” with inter last year then I challenge you to look up his best saves from last year and really tell me just how many saves of those really impressed you. You’ll quickly find that onana is not even better than de gea in his worst season

      @bjokvi91 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@B.hilario
Saying that De Gea played with Ashley Yong and Phil Jones in front of him isn't exactly a good argument either, as Onana doesn't exactly have a world class defence in front of him at the moment.
It's not uncommon for good goalkeepers perform badly when playing with an unreliable defence, so making conluseve statements about about Onana being a horrible goalkeeper at this point is just pointless.
Furthermore, Onana was brought in to do more than just make saves, things that are also more difficult to do in such a dysfunctional team.
But either way, the point is not to say that he's good now, but rather that he's not as bad as people are saying, and that he could potentially be very good if he stopped making so many mistakes.

The number of saves does not take into consideration the number of shots, but save percentage obviously does, as it is percentage of shots on target that were saved.
As for type of shots, Onana has made several good saves, as well as many easy saves just like all the other goalkeepers.
And as for proving things, all the simple "he's sh**" comments everywhere don't exactly prove anything at all, apart from the small-mindednes of those who post stuff like that, something which requires some pushback to show that we're not all a bunch of toxic reactionary crybabies.

The reason for not keeping DeGea was because they wanted to make a move for a new ball playing GK at one point and they thought they had that in Onana. Plus to renew the contract for DeGea would be £250-400K a week and an insane sign on fee + agent costs. Onana package of £120K a week (approx) makes that including the transfer fee cheaper than just renew DeGea's contract. Though I'm fairly certain that United would have ended on second place in the Champions League group with DeGea, but that is easy to say in retrospective.

Onana is by no means a bad goalkeeper, but he is a ball-playing sweeper keeper at a club which, due to injuries, has had centre-backs who are poor ball-players.
Now that Martinez and Varane are back from injury I think Onana will start to look better and he will look even better when Luke Shaw is injury free and when United (possibly) get a better right back.
It's also worth noting that Onana has the most saves of any Premier League goalkeeper this season, but he has had a greater amount of shots on him than his colleagues

Terrible upper management, no clear long-term plan. Why do Utd look like a 11 individuals on a pitch? Because they are. Ten Hag overachieved in his first season, largely because other top teams underachieved. Where Utd are just now is exactly their level. There have been far too many years of poor signings, reacting rather than planning. De Gea had to go because of his ridiculous wages, and he's not the only one that had to leave. There needs to be a proper clear out and rebuild for the club to regain control.

Who cares if you overpaid if you can afford it. On papers some of those players are so much better that what they look in the field. Statically or in their scouting report, some guys start to make mistakes that they never did throughout their whole career.
Something inside this club is rotten. No matter the players and manager who come and go, the whole team sweating despair and insecurity. That's what need to be investigate.

The coach is one of the biggest problems there and all the players he has carried across are now shadows of themselves. Onana isn’t even starting for his national team anymore because of how bad he has been which is shocking while David dega still doesn’t have a job 😮.

My question would be why has United given Ten Haag the power to buy whoever he want, yet some of the predecessors who are actually elite coaches they buy 2nd or 3rd choices...
