Just How BAD is Antony, Actually?

  • In the 2023-2024 Premier League season, after 21 matches in just his 2nd season since joining Manchester United, Antony has managed to surprise absolutely everyone and provide a grand total of 0 goals and 0 assists.
It really makes you wonder, how the hell was he valued as one of the most expensive transfers in premier league history at €100,000,000? What was man united thinking spending that much signing him? And why does it look like he completely forgot how to play football?
Let's take a look and see just how bad Antony has really been.

I'm not a fan of Brazilian Attackers in the PREMIER LEAGUE because it's difficult for them to adapt. In Antony's case, it's more psychological due to the recent domestic abuse allegations he had to face. He's young so hopefully he'll mature and try to integrate a more pragmatic style.

Beckham and Quaresma were also notoriously one-footed. Seems like a criticism especially put on left-footed players. I can't think of many dominantly right-footed wingers who regularly put in crosses or finishes with their weaker left foot? Can you? The problem is more that wings need overlapping runs to take away the help defense.

People were dogging Nunez and Mudryk but Nunez had 15 by the time he was done with the season. Mudyrk played for a struggling Chelsea. Antony, unlike both of these players, doesn’t do anything progressive with the ball. He doesn’t carry the ball forward in any significant way. He can’t take on his man, can’t put in a decent cross, can’t even have a crack at goal. Nuñez is likely going to end up as one of the best strikers in Europe, he has a plethora of strong attributes, averages a goal involvement every game this season and only really needs to polish up his finishing to be a true terror. Mudryk isn’t great but he’s still finding his feet in a dumpster fire of a team and does seem to have a lot of raw potential, as well as raw *pace* which is so important for a winger. I can see him ending up a solid top-half-of-the-table performer. Looking at Antony it’s probably likely that he’s already peaked career-wise; if he seems incapable of doing anything even against lower level opposition he’s almost certainly not cut out for a top league.

Antony is a textbook example of why freestyle football guys wouldn't necessarily be great players beyond a Sunday league. It's great to be able to do lots of tricks and what not, but that's not what wins matches at an elite level (most of the time). Understanding the shape and strategy, and making sure your movement is getting work done even when you don't have the ball is the quiet skill that tends to differentiate long-term elite players. There have been loads of technically mediocre premier league players that have had fantastic careers because they simply know where to be and when.
Antony is a talented footballer - but I don't think he's a premier league footballer.

We also see less latinamerican attackers than historically in the big leagues, though there is still a lot of them. I do however think that some future in the PL is possible for Antony, though not in Man U. If Joelinton or Almiron can be reinvented and respected, then in some reality the possibility is there for Antony as well.

Tadic was a phenomenal captain, he was perfect for Ajax. While ManU has... Bruno... Fernandez. It's not a excuse but discipline is needed in Ajax while in ManU it's not. That's why I think Antony is not improving and adapting to the club and the prem.

Years ago they used to say "Spurs are a great Cup team". Which, I think, points to the fact that some teams are more suited to certain types of competition. The Premier League is a hard, demanding league. The Eredivise, less so, and I think that helps a top Dutch team like Ajax in the Champions League. They are fresher and have more time to prepare for the big games. Tadic, I thought, was one of Southampton's better players, but he wasn't a standout. They should have kept him, but a club like Southampton has made a lot of poor decisions over the years.

He’s not just a terrible player. He was clearly talented at Ajax and he scored in his first three games at united I think. His touch, his shooting, everything is lacking since being at united. United does this to everyone. It’s a pressure cooker of a club, where you’re scrutinised more than any other team, even though united shouldn’t have any expectation to win atm. With his price tag too I’m sure he felt even more pressure, then with his personal issues in sure that haven’t helped.

Producing 20 goals a season is good enough to keep a place as a Liverpool forward (striker). Think many of the opportunities he takes are not the best possible chances. Scoring those would turn him into a golden boot contender, lotta those chances taken are impossible yet, he comes really close. Hopefully he'll practice on his own a bit more, his volleys.

The only other explanation would be wingers are just worse which is absurd. Generally across sports the selection mechanism for players has gotten better and better. Had it been Alex Ferguson at the helm he would’ve gotten the pointless skills out of his game in the first season just like he did with Ronaldo. There is a reason that so few players are effective in the PL. It is the strongest league in the world from top to bottom. Even bench players are really good. I always thought that he should have been a Serie A, La Liga, or Bundesliga player after his time in Ajax. Just like you said, he should have stayed another season with Ajax because generally did not need to rush to leave. Also, I never saw Man U as a perfect choice for the Premier League(for obvious reasons). I always thought that a Liverpool transfer would have done wonders for his career. Exactly this, when you see at Ajax you can tell that he wasn't ready for a big club off course he had talent and potential but he still raw af and doing too much unnecessary thing on the field. I can see if they buy him as a back up so can develop him but buying him for 100m and expect to be star player ? Thats insane.

Anthony cannot read the game. The PL defenders stopped him with ease and erased him from being a threat. So he ends up doing nothing. Congrats MU fans, he’s your new Neymar. Instead of having a consistent constant goal threat of Gakpo.

as an inverted ring winger, he failed to cut in, failed to dribble pass the defense.
And if he manage to bring the ball to far right corner he also failed to cross in because he need to use his left foot and the opponent already know that.
Ever tried to switch his position to left side ?

I don't know why Ten Hag doesn't play him left and tell him to just run forward and cross the ball to somebody who can score. keep it simple like Mr Clough style, and tell him to practice kicking with his Right foot (6months practice with dead ball, passing & volleys and you can improve your weak foot easily). his game would improve massively & until he practices with his right more & plays a simpler left wing running crossing game He's not good enough for MUFC.

Lmao ten hag is peps pretender, he loved to make football as more complicated as it should be. Take a look at his idi otic single pivot system, weve been tra shed again and again with that system but he persistence.

the funny thing is he was £35m when Ten Hag asked for him (3 months before start of the season), but United focused on getting Frenkie De Jong for less than £65m (then less than £75m) WHILE other teams were focusing on dismantling Ajax, which in turn ended up in failure to sign FdJ for being cheap asses to Barcelona, and getting instead Antony for O N E H U N D R E D M I L L I O N E U R O S because Ajax had no other player to fill the role.
This, among other examples, is why United fans hate the Glazers, because they literally have the money to just buy the players but they delay it so they look like they are spending tons of money in the team (see Pogba, Martial, Alexis, Di Maria, Maguire, Wan Bissaka, Antony, Van De Beek, Mount and Holjund, tho this last one might worth it).

People love to troll Nunez due to comparison between him and Haaland when he arrived, other than that Nunez are had solid season last year and keep improving this year .. Off course comparing to haaland right now Nunez are still level below, but comparing to bumass like mudryk or anthony he's waaaay more superior player its not even funny.
