I didn’t even replace the switches, just took them out, blew some air to clean out any dust, reinstalled and voila, fixed!!! I was ready to replace the whole thing, thank you!!

Great video - well done. I was all set to buy a new switch for my one light that wasn't working, but I thought I'd fiddle with it first. With light cover removed, but not removing the two big screws to pull out the dome light compartment, I pushed on the inside edge of the current switch with a small screwdriver and noticed this caused the light to come on when the switch was depressed. When I stopped pushing on the switch, it wouldn't come on. So, I then pushed a bit harder which forced the switch to pop out of its compartment (towards outside edge) like shown in the video, but it won't fall out. I then pushed on the outside edge of the switch and popped it back in and voila, it now works again. Two theories: 1) it dislodged some dust at the connectors; 2) vibrations from the van dislodged the switch ever so slightly. I'm leaning towards #2 because my other light went out, but just going in and pushing on the bulb got the light back on, so I think it too got dislodged a bit from vibrations, etc. Hope this holds. Wish I could say this was a no cost replacement, but made the mistake of trying new bulbs I bought before watching this video. Still only $6 and extra bulbs in case I need them.

That is very interesting. That would also explain why many people said switching them from one side to the other made them work again.

After watching the video and reading this comment from Krandy3, I used this method to fix the map light on a 2012 Pilot that was not working. Took about 2 minutes to fix and is now working fine. All of this after purchasing a new bulb that I didn't need! Thanks for the video and the additional instructions in the comments!

    THANKEW!
Just bought a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L and have been working my way through fixing minor (but ANNOYING) problems.
As NEITHER one of the spotlights/reading lights worked, I was advised to replace the bulbs.
HOWEVER after watching this video (AND reading a lot of the suggestions in your viewers comments), I had BOTH lights working just fine in less than 10 minutes.
And I didn't have to replace ANYTHING!
But, man, did your video ever help!
I had NO idea how to get at those bulbs until I saw how you did it.
Yup. Prying those "lenses" off was easy (by doing EXACTLY what you said to do).
After that, I tried removing the 2 Phillip's screws - but I couldn't "wiggle" the centre part out and was afraid I might pull down the entire overhead panel.
So, I removed both bulbs (they came out easily with the aid of a thin screwdriver), checked and discovered neither one of them was burnt out!
    Hmm...
So, I decided to try cleaning all the contact points with my handy-dandy spray can of "Contact & head cleaner." (The one If have is "Nexxtech" 3.5 oz. Bought it for about $10.00 more than as DECADE ago. Use it whenever I have possible contact problems with anything "electrical," and it's STILL almost full.)
Anyway - sprayed inside the bulb contact points (that hold the bulb in place), then used the screwdriver to pop those two on/off buttons to the side of the unit (WITHOUT removing them). Sprayed all around where the switches pop into place, then used the screwdriver again to GENTLY push the on/off switch back until you feel it "click" into place.
    Replaced the bulbs and -
    EUREKA!
    Both work just fine .
Replaced the cover/lenses (GENTLY). No problem. They went smoothly into place.
    Pressed both.
    ALL LIGHTS WORK.
So, thanks SO much. I suspect I would have snapped/broken something if I hadn't watched how you removed things FIRST.
BTW: I was prepared to order the "repair hit" from Amazon, but got lucky and just had to clean up some dirty contacts.
    Appreciate it.
    Liked & Subscribed.
    Cheers,
    GN

I've had this happen on my wife and sister-in-law's 2006 and 2009 civics. I found both times that the switches and bulbs were fine but one of the two screws you last removed needed to be tightened, as it provides the ground to the light unit. Not that it really saves you any time but I'd recommend just giving a 1/4 turn to both of the mounting screws and pop everything back in and test. Great video!!!

THANK YOU for this video! I had a 2009 Pilot Touring that had this problem when I bought it 2 years ago. I bought a new "relay" from Honda and had my mechanic put it in. Recently traded in the 2009 for a 2012 Pilot EX-L and it had the SAME issue with the SAME passenger side map light. In about 10 minutes I had everything fixed and new LED lights installed in both driver's and passenger's sides. I feel like I could conquer the world now! :-)

Great vid! The passenger side (right) map light wasn't automatically turning on in my 2011 Pilot when I opened the doors. But it would still work if I manually pressed on the lens. All I did was open the lens assembly like you showed, removed the white switches, blew some air on the 3 little contact points inside and swapped the switches, and it somehow fixed it. Now both lights will automatically turn on/off. Thanks for the tutorial!

Awesome thank you! I got around to asking dealer to change bulbs when I was in for service, and they still didn't work...said would have to come back for electrical diagnosis another time. Well that just sounded like it was going to be needlessly expensive. Found your video, got me a kit and voila 10 minutes later it works! SO nice to be able to see again! Except now am a bit OCD annoyed that I should swap out middle and rear bulbs to coordinate. Thanks!

Thank you! Thank you! I’ve been racking my brain for awhile as to why the map lights weren’t coming on when I unlocked my car and/or when I opened the doors. Also, why the passenger side light wouldn’t come on when pushing the button, but the driver side would. I have a 2010 Honda Element and both of the front map lights have not been working on any setting for awhile, and it was pretty dark getting in and out of the car at night. This video was found for me by an employee of Auto Zone, where I stopped to check my fuse, which was fine. After listening to part of the video in the store, I decided to give it a try myself at home, and did it all in about 30 minutes with two screwdrivers, an air blower, and a headlamp to give me better vision in the compartment. Taking off the lenses was easy with a flathead screwdriver. In the Element, the assembly looks slightly different inside and a little tighter in the compartment, but I got the bulbs and Phillips head screws out easily. The hardest part for me was trying to get the whole assembly released because it was hard to get a good grip on it in the center to wiggle it free, but once I tried the flathead screwdriver at the top of the assembly, it unsnapped easily. Air cleaned and swapped the switches, and had to work with one of them to get it to click in and stay put, but finally it all came together, and they both work as intended! No new parts needed yet, but from the Amazon links you posted, I have that info saved in an Amazon list in case I need them in the future. Thanks for such good instructions!

A suggestion from a retired instrumentation tech - often iffy or intermittent microswitches can be brought back normal operation by spraying contact cleaner into the switch around the actuator button and around the connector pins. Even if the fix is temporary, it is useful for diagnostic purposes or for restoring operation until replacement part can be obtained.

    • @TightWadDIY

That makes sense. It does appear to be corrosion causing a poor connection on these.

Excellent video. Just 2 small remarks - when unclipping plastic elements, it is much safer to use something soft as a detaching tool, instead of metal (no screwdriver!) - I use guitar feathers, but you can also use an old credit card plastic or something like that.
My second remark is - never touch the LED elements on a LED lightbulb, when those elements are open / exposed and not encapsulated. This may lead to much sooner burn out of the lightbulb.

My map lights worked fine (push-push, on-off) on my 2007 Civic. My problem was that they would not come on when the engine was turned off and the key extracted from the ignition, or when the door was unlocked. In the video, I noticed that the switches had three terminals. It occurred to me that one terminal was ground, one was to turn on the light, and the third must be a pass-through for the auto-on function. So, I removed the switches and sprayed them with contact cleaner. Now the auto-on function works perfectly.

Thanks for the video. I bought the kit you recommended. I replaced the switches which solved my problem. The issue I now have is the new LED bulbs that came with it kept blowing the fuse. So I went to a 10 amp. If I turn one on it was fine but both on again blowing the fuse. So I went with the original bulbs and everything is working properly. I’m satisfied with that. Thanks again Maria

This method shown in this video works fine on a Honda 2011 CRV. I needed to use an 8mm socket to take the screws out - to tight use a screwdriver. The process in this video is much simpler than other suggested methods on TH-cam. (i.e. no need to remove and unplug the entire assembly)

I *love* how you catch yourself and notice that a beginner watching what you are doing may not catch X or Y detail... like ar 4:15, your right forefinger bracing the right switch so it doesn't ricochet around the car... "if you pry out too hard with the thin, flat object, the switch could go flying." And 5:47, "I needed to push it up a little bit more to get that screw in." Awesome! And thank you for sharing the comments from other people/ forums about switching switches to opposite sides and using compressed air!!
Question, (because it's much easier to learn from your teaching style than others) (and because you convinced me to replace the other interior lights in my 2019 Honda CRV with super bright LEDs... I also MUCH prefer the warm/ soft white 2700-3k color, but even more than that, I *really* prefer being able to SEE with the brighter lights!)... so, the question...
Any chance you might have a way to show how to change ALL the interior bulbs in a 2019 Honda CRV?
(I really wish Honda had done a better job lighting the cargo /"trunk" space, so much so that I have rigged up a flashlight back there, but I'm planning to change all the bulbs back there to Super Bright 6k LEDs.)

I recently purchased this model van and the map lights were both off. After watching towards the end of your video (the part where you mentioned that others said the switches might not be bad) I was able to get the lights to work without having to buy new switches. I didn’t have to take the whole assembly out either.
Basically what I did was just remove the lamp cover and used a small screwdriver to slightly move the switches as though I was trying to pop them out (just as shown in your video). As I was pushing the switch out the light turned on. Then I repeated the same on the other side. Problem solved.
I guess that overtime of pressing the switches that they end up moving out position and just needs to be reposition to work again.
    Thanks for making the video.

  • @GB1Channel

2013 Pilot… right sided switch was getting fussy. Removed the clear lenses. Used a small flat screwdriver to “pop” each switch laterally (figured the driver side would soon get wonky). Simply moving the switches laterally and then popping them in by pushing medially did the trick. Didn’t even have to drop the unit down from headliner. You can move the switches to the side but you cannot remove them without dropping the assembly from the headliner. Like other commenters noted, cleaning the contacts restores function. The lateral movement scraped crud or reestablished contact. For good measure, I sprayed a bit of MAF cleaner into the edge where the switches plug in (toward the midline of the car). I also shot a bit of cleaner into the plungers. Seem to work fine. Time will tell. If they act up again and don’t respond to this or to a more thorough disassembly and cleaning, then I’ll spend the $13 for new switches.

FYI, as I said above I went ahead, but after trying the solutions I was not successful and ended up losing all my interior lights. Took it to my mechanic who discovered that the driver's side dome light is not grounding correctly. Thus when engaged the short blows the fuse and effecting all the interior lights. The fix is to replace the entire console or not use this driver's side map light. Guess I can live without this dome light. Also, per my mechanic the LED lights you link to are not compatible with my 2011 Pilot. Incidentally, my neighbor has a 2012 Pilot with the same issue with his Driver's side Map / Dome light.
