I think I've memorized them all by now, and yet I still enjoy listening to Dame Maggie roll them off her tongue with her sharp-edged wit. Whoever wrote the lines for her definitely understood the power of her voice, as well as her gift of sarcasm offered with a velvet glove. Dame Maggie, in her role as the Dowager Countess, will remain the master of the well-delivered put-down or verbal slap!
I wish to concur in everything you said except in the misnomination of verbage relating to the excerpt, "4 simple syllables." I believe for the sake of better English you were trying to convey the thought more accurately was "words" not "syllables." Please don't be angry "but there comes a time when things are best left to the professionals" - Maggie Smith, Dowager Countess, Downton Abbey.
I will add Dame Maggie Smith has been a childhood favorite of mine. That early 20th century sass and witty repartee is an accreddit to her acting skill.
@@StaffordMagnus Yes, that's true, but Maggie Smith has just the perfect mannerisms for this kind of character. She also has this kind of naughtiness about her that adds another layer and makes the dowager so likeable
The casting of Shirley Maclaine was such a masterstroke. Maggie Smith is a legend unto herself, and Shirley was so good in the scenes they had together. I just realised that they are of the same age in real life too!
I adore the Dowager -- sure hope to see Julian Fellowes consider a prequel series to Downton Abbey featuring a young Dowager, Lord Grantham, Prince Kuragin as well as showing us how Robert and Cora met and fell in love!!
An awesome idea! But please, please, leave out Prince Kuragin! The prequel would be much better without this zany character and his fake Russian accent :)
@@irinavolkova442 LOL! It wasn't the smoothest sounding accent, that is true -- but I really would love to see the Dowager in a torrid situation of being in love and engaged to her husband, but being drawn towards Kuragin.
Who would play the young Lady Violet though? There's no one I can think of who'd do justice to the role - other than a young Maggie Smith... Suggestions 😂
She is without a doubt the best she makes the show!!!!! MY FAVORITE SAYING OF HERS IS weekend....... what is a weekend brilliant question must be tough to be that rich lol😅
I loved loved loved The Dowager! Her mannerisms and quick wit were always on point. Some of the funniest scenes are between her and Isabel. Truthfully, I don't know how the rest of the cast kept their composure. Mrs. Hughes was funny too, I would like to see someone put together a video of her funny, shady, moments with Mr. Carson, Mrs. Patmore, Barrow, and Miss O'Brien.
I could listen to her all day she's my agent and I admire her spunk and this series of movies I wish there was more but if she's getting on like I am she doesn't feel like doing more I hardly feel like going from the living room to the kitchen LOL I'll be 90 in May2024 I hope she's doing well.❤
Sir Julian Fellows did I believe and I once saw an interview with Maggie and she said she always said the lines the way they were written. But sometimes it was her tone and marvelous expression.
Maggie or the Dowager Countess's the best that England has produced. Afine lady and actor with a great accolade of work produced in her lifetime. Long Live the Dowager Countess!
Its a shame no one has made a 1980s style post credit compilation of bloopers snd outtakes…. Case in point in the Swivel chair scene , Allen Leech is clearly hiding a laugh
I loved this character,,, but no matter how many times I watch the series I can’t abide the character Mary,, such a bitter nasty and entitled character….
I can never have enough of the Dowager Countess's hilarious, witty comments xD
Thats why I cant stop watching DA for the 15th time
She’s in Harry Potter too!

“Do you promise?” is *such* a solid burn!! Just 4 simple syllables, but SO savage!!!
Amazing how she can be so barbaric and classy at the same time.

“There’s never a dull moment in this house.”
I live for the fact that I remember her lines because they’re all fabulous 🔥
some people recite them in 2023
Love me some Maggie Smith. She is the only one who could have pulled off this character like she did.
So true!
Dame* Maggie Smith. Just saying lol.
I do believe Julian Fellowes wrote the character just for her to play.
To be fair, I think her friend Dame Judi Dench could have done a pretty good job of it too.

I love her character so much. Maggie Smith is one of my Top Three most favorite actresses.

"ladling soup down the throats of some unfortunates"

"She could get to know New York"
"I don't think things are quite that desperate"
Literally something my late grandmother would say lol
I don’t think nothing tops the “Do you promise?”
The grandmother is hilarious. She was my favorite. I watch Downton Abbey every weekend.
I was howling when she asked Lord Grantham on why he talks of her as if she were a salmon. It caught me off guard, and I love it so much 😂😂😂

Someone mentioned Dame Judi Dench in another comment. Wouldn’t she be great in the prequel portraying either the mother or MIL of Lady Violet.
"I can handle her", I love the Dowager's comeback to that!
“Do you promise” is my very favorite saying from Violet….she says it with a punch and I can see both Mary and Robert holding in the laughter!
Maggie Smith is the English grandma I wish to have. Loved her when I set my eyes on her in Sisters Act. 😁 English culture at its best.
Dame Maggie Smith is a true treasure. The English are fortunate to have her, and the rest of us are fortunate that they share her with us.
"Vulgarity is no substitute for wit."
I couldn't agree more.
Especially so when most people today rely on vulgarity in attempting to be witty
she started it, though.
Poop.
That should be taught in schools today. It’s a truth completely forgotten by most of Gen Z. (I say this as a member of Gen Z.)
can we not continue the stupid cycle of generation bashing?@@12classics39
The thing is, because of her wit, throughout the whole 6 series I could barely tell when she’s really angry or serious. 😂😂
"I am a good sailor" Definitely, I am stealing that one.
