I de-influenced myself out of buying a beauty advent calendar, I was almost buying it and then I remembered you saying that "you probably won't even like or use all of what's inside" and I remembered that I have lots of make up at home and don't need more.. so I put it down, and I'm so proud that I said no to myself thanks to your teachings 😊
I did the same with an advent calendar, too! There was a calendar available from Kikki. K, a stationery store - but most of the things included, I wasn't interested in, and if I wanted a pen or notebook, I'd just.. get that and only that hahaha
@@guyaaa It is great to hear that you gave it a second a thought. I never bought an advent product of anything but their packaging more than the product is what I find tempting. But as you and Shawna said, you may not like or use all of it.
I bought one beauty calendar once, and I barely used any of it because it didn't suit me. Never again. Better to pay more for something you know you'll use.
I always check what's inside and make a yes-no-list for products I will use and not. Most of the time I'm not gonna use half of it, so it's a no for me. I only buy beauty advent calendars, if I use everything except for one or two Items.
Girl, nothing wrong with buying pack of stickers and washi - but the collecting of it is sooo addictive! Beware... I ended up with like 80 washi rolls before I knew it because they are fairly cheap :D so now I have a ban on them until I use them all up
This is why you gotta ask to borrow stuff from friends and family before committing to a craft hobby!! My mom has boxes of yarn, embroidery thread, and even those scrapbooking scissors that make patterns. I feel like every white Midwestern woman has their own personal craft store that they'd be happy to let you shop from lol. So many artsy/crafty people have more materials than they could ever use lol. It's sooo easy to buy something for a project and get distracted by all the pretty things and start coming up with ideas that aren't ever going to be finished lol
@@MiStuSia16 I used to do that with pretty notebooks, had like 10+ of them and would pick them up and say "I will use them when I find the perfect idea", put them back and never figure out what to use them for. Realized that they are not giving me joy just sitting in a box. There will always be more pretty notebooks to replace them once they are used up and have been loved. If that doesn't help then: What use is 200 rolls of washi tape going to be to you in a box? Would you be happier with them decorating the things that surround you more? OR (a bit more harsh, but true...) You only live a set amount of days on Earth and is it really important to you to keep these rolls unused and pristine for you entire life rather than use any of them? 😅These thoughts is how I started actually USING the pretty stuff I bought! Hope that helps...
I thought I'd just buy a couple of rather neutral ones that I could use for everything and I've used two of the five ones maybe three times and got tired of them. Thankfully I didn't get full rolls but still, that was such a useless purchase. I was different decorations all the time and I'd rather just make my own little doodles.
It is not normal...the planner girlies were going into credit card debt due to FOMO and keeping up with the joneses. Same with after pay and installments to go to GO wild or get the latest but the planner is blank.
@@douloureux. I mean, I did but I only ever use that one planner (and use it a lot). The quality of paper and binding is important to me as my hobby is journaling/drawing with fountain pens and I need a notebook that can last me that entire year. All that to say, I was very careful and considerate about my purchase, but a lot of these ‘girlies’ not only buy multiple, but then don’t even use them halfway. That’s just careless.
@@SpacemanTheo investing in quality is totally fine :) i meant it more like if you search for a planner nowadays then that’s pretty much the average price. Years ago it was only filofax that had those prices
@@SpacemanTheo yeah, same... I use a Hobonichi Cousin, which is stupidly expensive, but it's also the only planner I will consistently use and it actually helps me organise my life. So I buy one every year, and occasionally (every two or three years) I buy a new cover for it. But I still wish there was a cheaper option that has the same paper quality and the same Layouts.
I'm that girl who starts a million crafts and never really finishes them. Okay, sometimes I do, but not enough to justify starting all the things I've started. When I began watercolor painting, I committed to painting every single day. I'm well over two months now of painting daily, so if I need new materials, I'll allow myself to buy them, because I'm certain they'll get used.
You can consider upgrading your materials, then. For watercolor they make a huge difference, and the higher quality paints last longer because you would not need that much!
@@__unwavering you can have an amazing color range in watercolor with a good yellow, red and blue. (Specifically pthalo blue, azo yellow and quinacridone rose). More colors depend on what you specifically want, not what you need.
I appreciate this video because you are proving that anticonsumerism is an active choice you have to make every day. It's not a one and done thing. And these days the entire world is working to get you to impulse buy something. It's ok to buy what you need, but take a second and really evaluate exactly what your needs are
E-readers are amazing if you're a heavy reader or need large or dyslexic friendly text! And they last forever, s2g. My last one lasted 7 years and the only reason I got a new one was because I lost it
The whole reason I use one is to be able to read ebooks from my local libraries. I can definitely say I’ve saved way more than the price of my e-reader on checking out books instead of buying them!
@@NQJasmine some of the books, especially fantasy, are so large, too! Even if I didn’t have RA they’d be uncomfortable to hold. Enjoying my e-reader :)
@@NQJasmine They are the best purchase use mine daily and read thrice as much as I used to, and read for free through Libby. Literally saved hundreds every year that I’ve owned mine - 5 years of free reading.
@NQJasmine my eReader is the only reason I can read with my disability. It's a bit discouraging to see this item listed when it makes reading accessible for people with disabilities and IEPs. It's also better for the environment if you are only reading ebooks. I enjoyed this channel prior, but it's just uncomfortable to see items that make a daily activity such as enjoying a book more accessible, viewed as "stupid". It is a privilege to call any item that aids someone with a disability or IEP as stupid. Edit sorry: Also want to add a lot of the time purchasing ebooks will save you money (don't even need an eReader you can use your phone or laptop) but that isn't always the case. There are also a lot of ways to get free ebooks online (even without using sketchy websites but yes that is also ah option) which IMO adds to the argument that it makes it more accessible for people with limited funds. One may argue the device is $$$$ but realistically you can find them for fairly cheap used. I sold an old model of a Kindle I had (screen still bothered my eyes, had to get a bigger one 😅) for $20 and this is on average what this model went for give or take by a few bucks.
One thing that I find truly wonderful about being retired is no longer needing to use a planner or journal. The calendar on my phone is more than enough to keep track of the few things I have to do. I spent my life living with the requirement for a planner and it’s just so freeing not no longer need it 🧘🏻♀️
I think there may be a difference of "Planner as necessity" vs. "Planner as journaling hobby." Neither's better, just a different point of view. I went back to paper planners because the one in my phone wasn't cutting it, and I was missing important things.
@ I continued to use paper the first year I was retired and gradually without intention shifted to my phone. By the end of the year I realized I just didn’t need the paper version. Everyone has different needs. I’m glad you found what works for you because that’s what it’s all about, finding what works with minimal stress. 🩷
@@rvanderjagt5944 Oh wow, that's so interesting to hear? I love having a physical planner but for me it's the opposite, that makes me more likely to forget or oversee the important stuff. I guess the point is to always carry it with you and look at it multiple times a day but I just can't be bothered... also how do you deal with rescheduling plans? That would always stress me out in my bullet journal to have to cross out entries and then not being able to write something else there.
I think it's personal preference, TBH. I like the planners with the whole month laid out on a grid, and then more detailed bullet list pages for each day. With my phone, I'm looking at little bars on a screen, and it's hard for me to tell what's a school event or medical appt, and what's (for example) a reminder to water my succulents. Sometimes things get buried. I've heard other people report going back to paper after tech issues where things get deleted and not always backed up. As far as reschedules and goofs, I use those little white-out tapes. Or I cross it out and write "r/s" next to it so I know it's been rescheduled. A habit I picked up form working in a doctor's office, I guess. Also probably why I don't go super fancy.
Ugh, I simply adore your channel. You have single handedly changed my outlook on finances and materialism. Through watching your videos, I was able to introspect and find the deeper meaning as to why I buy certain things and why it's difficult for me to declutter. I've realized that I heavily romanticize the item in question, which leads me to make poor choices. I'll try on a dress, and even if its not the ideal fit, I'll begin romanticizing myself accessorizing it, or going somewhere that is "good for the occasion" which leads me to spend money on an item I wont even wear regularly. I also realized this is why it's difficult for me to declutter my wardrobe. I'll either romanticize the way I can style it to make the item work for me (which may require me to buy even MORE stuff) or, I imagine, a very aestheticized and romanticized location where I could wear the said outfit. I'll imagine myself at the aquarium, museum, a library... none of which exists in my town, and I don't even read lol. I end up keeping it thinking I'll have a place to wear it someday. All this to say, if it doesn't fit my lifestyle now, dont buy it. I know this was long, and I dont know if you'll ever read this. But because of you, I realized this about myself. This epiphany has really changed the process in which I consume things, and I sincerely want to thank you for that.
Yeah I still love the old school Leuchtturm 1917 A5 that was really popular in bullet journaling for a while and it still works great for me. But I'm often thinking about a Hobonichi Cousin or Weeks even though I know undated is the way to go for me. I keep trying to come up with reasons I need a Weeks-style journal and there just isn't one. I think I want one because I see other people doing really cute set-ups in them.
I talked myself out of buying 2 travel size perfumes from the Sephora sale. I already know I want the full size bottles because I’ve used multiple samples of these perfumes and love them. It makes more sense to wait a few months and save up for the full size ones than spend $60 on minis just because they’re 10% off right now. I’d only “save” $6 anyway.
I actually had the opposite realization where I get bored or sick of full sized perfumes part way through and don't finish them, so I instead opt for the travel size so I have a smaller cash outlay and don't waste products
Papier is my kryptonite-they are such great quality notebooks-but I have to remind myself that I use notebooks for me and no one else, so who cares if it’s luxe. Half the time I write notes on used envelopes anyway 😂
omg i loooove Papier. they have such cool and unique designs but they’re so expensive 😖 i bought a planner from them once and felt guilty the entire week 🤣
I wanted to buy myself an ear cuff (I own none) for Black Friday. This company is already advertising discounts with many influencers so I went to check it out. Measly 10%. Maybe if they didn't spend all that money gifting influencers, they could afford to give their real customers a proper discount. I'm not buying the ear cuff on principle, even though I wanted it for months.
I love the title of this vid! Instead of ‘will I buy it?!’ It’s ’I refuse to buy it!’ ❤❤ If you dispense with buying all the unnecessary crud you don’t need it frees up the resources to make dreams a reality! Thank you Shawna ❤
@@julianagc1989 I think you still can ? I believe the Canadian girls from the podcast Books Unbound did it. I can’t remember in which episode they talk about it though … hope you can figure something out !
my kindle from 2010 still works, had to replace the battery though. but amazon took away on-device book buying for old models. the main reason for me buying a new kindle a few years ago was so i could read in the dark in bed--huge upgrade. but i've been tempted to get a boox instead, so i can browse libby directly on it and not be confined within the amazon system. but it seems silly when i already have 2 kindles. i'd probably sell the newer one in that case though. some people have a lot of ereaders, and i think that's going against the point.
I loved how you explained why you feel the need to buy planners (feeling neat and organized) - i felt exactly the same way. But after several failed attempts at different planner systems i came to the realization that there is no perfect system that will transform me into the person i aspire to be. Only a shift in my identity will. I now focus on feeling like a neat and organized person and always asking myself - what would such a person do in this situation. All i really need for planning is basically a pen and a piece of paper. That shift in focus really helped me.
I’m a SUCKER for buying planners and never using them. Instead, I bought a pack of 12 “to-do” steno pads on Amazon and I have been using them consistently for two years!! I just bought a house on my own, and although it’s totally in budget (I even had 20% in-hand for my down payment), I see all of the projects I want to do and stuff I “need.”
Also, your content has really helped me. I keep getting “great” coupon codes for clothing brands that I LOVE. I just moved, and I have TOO MANY CLOTHES. I’ve been PURGING clothes because my new house doesn’t have a “big enough” closet, and when I was packing, I realized that there’s a lot of clothing that I haven’t even worn in a year (or more), so I have NO BUSINESS buying more clothes.
Same here. Notebooks and planners. I still have 4-5 empty ones. But I’ve been successfully avoiding buying them for a while now. Also, I’ve noticed that the cheaper the notebook/planners, the easier it is for me to fill them. I treat expensive and fancy ones with strange carefulness.
Just stumbled across your channel a few weeks ago and I find this community so fascinating- I think one of your videos got recommended to me because i’ve been getting really into living sustainably and reducing my carbon footprint. I’ve never heard the jargon “low-buy” “no-buy” until now. I just very rarely feel the need to buy things in the way you describe. In fact sometimes I think I have the opposite problem I’m way to much of a cheapskate and often refuse to even replace pairs of socks with hole. For example I convinced myself I don’t need to buy a molecular modeling kit when it would probably help a lot with my organic chemistry course. I’ve had the same journal since I was 16 - it’s gray and 3-ringed with replaceable pages. I even avoided laundry for like a month because the laundry in my building costs 4 DOLLARS per load (2 for wash and 2 for dry). Buying things for me can actually create a lot of anxiety and make me feel WAY guiltier than i should, I didn’t grow up poor, we were middle class, so I don’t know why I’m like this my friends can all go shopping normally without anxiety. I even feel bad buying myself groceries sometimes. For me I think I actually have to work on feeling like it’s ok to buy new things for myself, when I need them or simply because they would spark joy. I recently bought myself 6 brand new pilot G-2 pens some sticky notes and a pack of 10 colored markers- al together less than $20. I value those pens so much, I love them dearly, use them every day now. In an odd way your no-buy/low-buy content is helping me to get more perspective and decide when it is alright to buy nice things for myself instead of letting my anxiety and guilt around spending control me.
@ yk I think it also stems from capitalism in a way it’s almost like I value the money too much to spend it, more than my own comfort or pleasure, and just internalizing the rhetoric that wealthy people use to explain why those without wealth can’t for example afford homes nowadays. We always get told it’s all our fault for being dumb with our money and we just need to save better. Not to mention the fear/anxiety that I could have a medical issue and be burdened with possibly over 10k in medical costs, and how am I supposed to buy stickers if me or someone I love could need that money to stay alive someday. (def not a healthy thought but it feels like it’s real)
Hi Shawna! Thank you for being a library supporter! As a librarian, budgets and stats often dictate things like software choices, but if you haven’t already, definitely share your feedback with your library. They may be able to help troubleshoot and if enough users are struggling, they may reassess. Happy reading! 📖
It took me years to pick an e-reader. I don't have a computer so finding one where I could access digital books easily wss hard. After years I eventually bought a Boox because it's rather a tablet with e-reader screen tech so I can download apps I use without having to connect to any other appliance. I really like it but it took me years to take the plunge.
I’m a big physical notes and physical planner person, and I find that buying supplies secondhand is really helpful. I also bought a refillable planner last year, so then I can just replace the inserts every year. Pre-made planners always have all this crap I don’t use. My intention is to start recycling the used paper into other things like cards or just new custom inserts.
Shawna it‘s been so cool to see your growth over the last few months, whenever I get promotional emails I forgot to opt out of I think of you saying „you don‘t need all that“ and it‘s like being exorcised of the shopping demon lol ❤
thank you for this, i find it really helpful? interesting? comforting? to see that even anti-consumerism-oriented people are struggling. it makes me feel less guilty for wanting stuff (i.e. stationery), and makes me believe it's possible to resist buying. don't know if that made sense, but thank you for your good work 🙏
Thank goodness for this video, was thinking of buying a new planner but realized that I have an undated one that has worked for me in the past. Started using that same planner tonight! Was fantasizing about being productive instead of actually being productive.
I loved your thought process here. I did have to laugh when you said, "8 or 9,000 stickers." Things are so much easier to buy than use! Good job deinfluencing yourself!
as a person who genuinely uses a hobonichi planner and is pretty deep in the stationery rabbithole. you deserve better quality stickers than happy planner. i mean stylistically that all comes down to what's your taste but imo even the sticker quality itself is not that good. i recommend JetPens and Yoseka for stationery in general (both USA based but iirc ship to Canada for not an exorbitant price), my preference is JetPens for their easier to search website, but Yoseka has a lot of great stuff as well, it just takes a little more digging to uncover everything. If you stylistically like the happy planner ones, absolutely go for them, but I thought I'd share my personal preferences. (also, it's kinda fun to realize the completely different planner circles we're in-- I was waiting for you to mention the kokuyo jibun techo/jibun techo DAYS, the PAL, the Take a Note, all the varieties from Midori, etc, but instead I was completely caught off guard by some I'd never heard of fkdgjhkfjdg)
I sort of "de-influenced" myself from something recently, even though I made a purchase. Kohl's had matching family pajamas on sale, and i wanted to get a pair for myself in red buffalo plaid because it would match the pants my husband already has. And it would be easier to find matching jammies for my two kids each year as they grow. So we could coordinate each Christmas without having to buy entirely new sets. But then I looked at the material and realized the pants on that set were fleece. I overheat easily and hate fleece. I knew i would never ever wear those except on Christmas day. So i would be spending money on something only used once per year. I found another pair of jammies that were soft jersey material, ones I know would feel good and that I could wear all December each year. I do love having festive wear for different seasons. Like i get excited when its time to pull out my Halloween or Christmas apron. But anyway, i opted for the jersey material pajamas even though they dont match my husbands pajama pants at all. I realized i could buy him matching ones, but then i would be stuck in the trap of buying my kids and all of us new matching sets each year since my kids are growing quickly. I decided I didn't have fo maych anyone, I can buy yhe pajamas that I like and that feel good and enkoy them for years to come during the holiday season. Make them my official Christmas jammies that I can get excited about pulling out every year. I have been struggling with always feeling bad in pictures and having cute Christmas jammies makes me more excited about tsking pictures on Christmas Day with my family. The pair i purchased was the same price as the other, but I feel good knowing they will actually be worn more than once. I will wear these ones until they are worn out or no longer fit (my weight fluctuates a lot).
This may be me not being a planner person, but why are some of these planners so pricey? I use a $10 school year one. It has everything I want (compact, hardcover, month tabs, metal edged corners for when I shove it in my purse or bag, spiral bound so it lays flat.) When I was working in a doctor's office, we all used Office Max brand blotter calendars as planners. I know I'm probably not going to use half the things in the more elaborate planners (sometimes I forget there's stickers in the back of the one I have,) and that helps me de-influence a lot. YMMV.
I will say that a camping journal (for those of who go camping) is nice, because it's part planner, part reference for future trips or nostalgia. Those also don't necessarily have to cost a lot, especially since I'm literally packing it in a duffel bag and then using it in the woods. I guess the point is "get what realistically suits your lifestyle."
Just wanted to say I love your content and it's helped me on my decluttering journey and to stop the cycle of constantly buying stuff. On a side note have you ever thought of doing a podcast? I find your voice calming and soothing 😊
Hi Shawna ! I notice goal / sticker planners are being featured in videos on how to budget in an " aesthetic / funny " way with theme binders for cash stuffing with challenge mini cards you can partially colour every time you put some money in the binder etc . What do you think about this kind of budget organisation / saving up .
@@joannasliwa8147 that sounds like fun. I honestly don't do cash stuffing, but I know that I feel motivated when something is pretty. However, we need to reach balance, because more often than not decorations can become a burden and that can ruin our motivation.
They're not for me, but that doesn't mean they're not for someone. I think if you have the budget for this, have the habit to support daily/weekly use, and want one then they're probably ok. But, buying something cute won't make you use it. If you're someone who doesn't use cash regularly you'd need a significant change to habits to support this use. So working on that habit first (going to the bank machine regularly) is what I'd personally work on before buying one.
Girl I love your content!!! I bought a planner for this upcoming year that is unmarked. Some months are busier than others. I think having something I can use anytime and adding the dates in myself will be helpful. So im trying that instead! That way if I dont end up using a month i can always reuse it for a different one. 🙏🤩🥰
I disagree that every craft or project has to be finished. This is a puritan idea (that’s bad). I liked Marie Kondo’s idea that sometimes you were only meant to read 3 chapters of that book, and you got what you should from it. Same with crafts. The joy was in the purchasing, seeing unused pretty journals on the shelf can be the enjoyment in itself, but not if you are morally bound to using it up in the way it was intended. These ideas have set me free.
I’m still using the second hand kindle that sat in a foot of water in my flooded flat for 2 days, TWO YEARS AGO. These older kindle paperwhites are built like Nokia 3310’s. If anything the battery might be better than it was pre-flood.
Shawna! I am such fan of your channel. You have helped me so much, you have no idea. . I put on a new video whenever I need to be talked off the cliff. I am a recovering shopaholic, I've really messed up my finances with shopping over the years. I have to be extremely careful with any purchases. But I have also been actually enjoying the things that I already own, getting creative and putting life back into clothes I would ignore before because all I could see is what the next purchase was. Recently, I have really wanted a cozy Fair isle sweater and some cute fall specifically brown suede sneakers.😅 🆘
The thing I recently convinced myself not to buy is more sweaters. I have enough to wear one every day of the week, and if I don't want to get rid of any of my current ones I do not need to get any new ones. Do I need a certain brand of sweater dress because I like them 7 years ago? I'm not doing the same job I was doing 7 years ago, where will I actually wear it regularly?
I was thinking of your content yesterday when I was about to buy some Olaplex conditioning treatments at TK Maxx. My hair has been frizzy and dry and I thought about things I had at home that I can use before I drop 40€ on new stuff. Thank you for your videos!
I get stressed using fancy bullet journals and trying to keep them looking aesthetic and consistent. My solution has been buying 12 £2.99 Rhodia A5 dotted notebooks each year, and using one per month. I can change the set up each month, I’m not too precious about it, and I can use full pages for each day and still include trackers and note taking pages etc. I need physical planners to stay organised, and I get my moneys worth out of my £35ish hoard of planners. Also, if I lose one, I don’t lose my entire year!
For years now, I use a planner that is customized for me and costs under 30€ (~32$). I can change the size, layout etc and can even add my own photos as a cover, address list, phone list, birthdays and even my contact information. This is the only thing I use for planning for the whole year including holidays. I don't understand why there are so many planners that always look the same and costs so much Edit: called persönlicher Kalender
@maritje4225 hmm I think my last answer got deleted with the link. The link is persoenlicher Kalender . De written together. The language can be changed in the top right corner, so you aren't left with German
I never really understood people who plan their whole life in paper planners 😃 I keep my doctor appointments, concerts and random events in my phone calendar
I really appreciate how you are talking about the process of acknowledging that you want something and walking away! I often get amped up about these "aspirational" purchases and impulse purchases (I have ADHD) so I get roped into these excited choices, and I've been working really hard to not do that as much. Adding stuff to the cart and coming back later is one of my favorite techniques. I definitely have wayyy too many stickers so actually doing the math on how long it will take me to use some items will be a new technique that I want to start too :)
I was looking at planners this week. I have a couple of old Happy Planners that I could buy refills for but the price of the refill is nearly as much as a new planner so I stopped there. Then I remembered how hard it was to find refills that were structured in a way that works for me which is why I bought a $10 planner from Amazon last year. So I looked up that same planner and decided I'd just get that one again but in a new color. I also looked for stickers and added two packs to my "stocking stuffer" wish list so my husband can buy them for me.
Here’s a way to talk yourself out of buying Abercrombie. Do a Google search on the recent allegations. Not good things. Sex trafficking and prostitution. It’s also fast fashion which you’ve already done videos about.
I know I specifically work best with a monthly layout for my planner, and for the past few years I've been really happy with using an inexpensive one from CVS that lasts for two years and has lots of space to write in. It's pretty boring looking, but I put a sticker I like on it and that makes a big difference. I also love not having to go through the stress and expense of picking out a new planner every year. I agree it's good to remember that I already have a system that works for me and I'm not going to suddenly be good at keeping up with a new thing just because I bought something pretty for it!
I have a tradition that I buy myself a paper planner each year for Christmass. It costs more or less 40$. However writing in it and planning overall relaxes me and brings me joy. And I support local business. Could I buy cheaper planner? - Sure. I could also plan my days on printouts etc. But I prefer spending these 40$ on planner than on clothes or other stuff I don’t need.
An idea that I really like is, if you're wanting to use photos in your journal, is to print out photos onto adhesive paper so they're like stickers and you don't need to worry about whether they're going to fall out. Those sticky dots or photo corners or double sided tape don't last forever. Also, you can use your washi tape to decorate them, too.
I use a cheap blank planner and I love it because I get to decorate it! one week I was supposed to be resting after surgery and so I spent some time each morning coloring on each day where my to-done list is. Most weeks is just stickers, but it brings me so much joy and makes me want to use it. my planner starts clean and neat, but I can tell how bad my week was by how messy it becomes by the weeks end.
I too am an avid stationary shopper and JUST found stickii, its a monthly sticker subscription that is like 12 a month, and you can see the spoilers before they send out! If you dont like the month coming you just skip. And all the stickers come from indie artists so it feels great to support the community! … the monthly suprise for so cheap a month gets to itch the scratch of wanting new without gettint lost in a sticker store website. I dont mean to sound like im peddling sticker goods but as a girl with a chonky hobonichi this service reduce my overall spending for stationary goodies
I bought undated weekly planner inserts and I found a full printable bujo kit on Etsy that covers the full year and I created a system with just the trackers and features I need in a Filofax domino that I’ve had for years. A lot of the trackers and things, I can reuse for years to come instead of buying a new planner. I bought an $8 planner from Walmart for my desk and a tiny pocket one for on the go, but I’m not buying anything else new.
I use happy planner as my main planner - I tried to use so many systems but sometimes I'd fall off the wagon and I'd lose all motivation to use that particular planner alltogether. I spent so much money on bullet journals, any planners I could possibly get to find the perfect one. But since using happy planner I feel so much less pressure. this year I didn't use 2 months because of really bad morning sickness - I just took those 2 months out, redated them and used them as memory keeping and journaling about my pregnancy with pictures etc. and with stickers - I got carried away with their sales so in 2 years I accumulated 10 sticker books. I'm on a stationery no-buy next year, except for a planner for 2026, that means when I use this one up.
these last days i've been wanting a smartwatch so badly, I walk very often and I thought that having something to count my steps would help me lots, but I realised that a- I love my current digital 'dumb' watch, I wouldn't change it for the world and b- I want to spend less time on my phone, so a screen on my wrist was not a good idea
The planners are so adorable but I can't see the worth in dropping $60 on one when I have google calendar for free (and I don't have to carry around a big ass book lol)
Totally understand you with the notebook thing. I try to just have not more then two backups and I am not allowed to buy more until the second one is almost finished. Now is the time to buy a new notebook (will end the current one between January and February 2025) and of course my favourite brand is gonna have a Black Friday discount, BUT it hasn’t released a new collection since 2022 and I already have bought (and used) every cover design from it. I want my journals to be all unique designs, I don’t want replicas and I want to be able to distinguish them at first glance. Also, they are expensive (like all A5 notebooks for BUJO purposes) and I don’t need to buy something that doesn’t satisfy me 100%. And the cover design takes a really big chunk of that 100%. I’m probably just going to try something new even though I love that brand. Thanks to your videos I’m becoming a more responsible and aware of what i really need!!!!
I just wanna chime in when it comes to e-readers (for people who are just looking into it for their first e-reader) definitely do your research but don't buy into the hype and going down the rabbit hole of getting one with the most snazzy features, getting the most responsive one, the most recent one, etc. This is because if you primarily use it to read text-based books it shouldn't matter, the very basic model of any reputable brand works just fine and any other extra feature is just going to be a distraction. I think the basic model actually makes it easier to turn yourself off from the internet to read because it's too clunky to do anything else except for reading. However, I do love my e-reader simply because it takes the friction away from reading and I definitely have been reading more since I got it a couple of years ago. I even bought one for my partner for his birthday this year and he loves it.
you're setting a great example of how to catch yourself just before an impulsive purchase moment.. listen in to your feelings and ask yourself what you're really trying to buy! most of the time we will realize we do not need it (feeling of glamor, nostalgia, semblance of order in our lives, ...)
I tried the planner thing about 10 times over. Bought so many different types, tried them all. Kept up with any one of them for maybe a week and then don’t have time, lose interest, or completely forget. I bought a gorgeous Bando planner a couple years ago and that was my last try. Despite how much I loved the artwork and color schemes, the planner lifestyle is not for me. I have SO many other crafts and hobbies though so it’s ok! I am envious of those who do stick with the planners and make gorgeous spreads every week.
@@helllique haha you make a good point! You’re right, it doesn’t need to be anything more than simply keeping your life in order. I was so obsessed with seeing gorgeous weekly/monthly planner spreads on Instagram. Simple and efficient is the way to go 💖
I have a 10 dollar planner and it works great, the only thing I need is labeled boxes of the week, it is so basic, no decoration I just don't need anything else
Yeah, I'm in the journal and stationery community and the overconsumption is crazy. So many notebooks, pens, tapes and stickers that these people will just never realistically get through. And when you're just starting out it's very daunting and makes you feel you need all this to journal properly and you don't. Pen and paper is all you need. Buy the 50 cent to $3 notebook and some $1 pens. It's genuinely all you need.
I got a promotion this fall and my old planner wasn't cutting it (for 5+ years I was buying $5 planners from Marshalls) and I knew I needed an upgrade... I spent SOOO much time researching every damn planner on the market. I'm really happy I went for one off an Etsy shop that let me customize it for exactly what I needed. It is less aesthetically pleasing than some of the others I looked at, but at the end of the week the page is covered in notes so who cares? I'm glad I spent money on quality rather than giving in to shiny marketing.
I don't understand the problem with the shirts. You'll eventually need them. I always buy clothing items at the end of the season(for ex. swimsuit in September), they are on sale, that way I spend less
I talked myself out of buying some Olay skin cream that’s on sale at Sam’s Club. I’ve been using it and I like it, but even on sale it’s pretty expensive ($35 for 3.5oz of product). we have something we are saving for, so I said if I use a regular moisturizer for a few months, the difference will probably be minimal, if anything.
Planners are my job on here😅but it’s easy to get carried away. In the beginning I bought ALL the planners and ALL the things. Now years into this I know exactly the planners I use yearly and stick to it. I have cut myself back so much with stickers until I use the ones I have. I have been on a washi ban for years 😂 I ended up donating most of mine to a women’s shelter for the kids coming in. My advice is buy ONE planner and that’s all you need. Buy 2 sticker books. It’s really all you need. I’ve made very little purchases in 2024 compared to the past. I use what I have now. My weakness unfortunately is inks and fountain pens 😂
I talked myself out of buying a beautiful cobalt blue wool hoodie from my fav wool bralette company. I dont actually like to wear hoodies outside of the house bc I don’t feel my best in them and they don’t really match my outfits and I don’t need a super luxurious at home hoodie when I have plenty of comfy and warm options already. But for like a hot second I had convinced myself that I would “live in it” and it would be a great addition to my wardrobe.
Thanks for another great video! I bought the Erin Condren planner years ago. It was pretty but it was huge. Way too many “extra” pages and space that I didn’t even use. Not at all practical for taking with me on the go. I ended up not using it for this reason. Total waste of money. On the plus side, it cured me of wanting a special planner. I just use a journal from Target for recording my thoughts and a digital calendar for planning. Google calendar all the way now.
I hear you on the e-reader! I've been reading a lot this year as well, via either my iPad or my phone (Kindle app). I've been thinking about getting a dedicated e-reader as well because it would be very convenient, but at the end of the day it's just not very realistic for me to actually use it over my iPad. Once my iPad breaks / gets retired for good, I'll reconsider. The only thing a dedicated e-reader would be beneficial for is portability. It would be nicer to not lug around a 12,9 inch iPad pro when travelling.. but then again, I can always read on my phone.
@@larynadams1127 That's one benefit, yes, but that's not a reason for me to immediately go and buy one. My main reason was to get something that's smaller than my iPad but bigger than my iPhone for travel that I don't have to charge as much as my iPad. I might still make the switch and just sell off my iPad (one in, one out) but I'm not 100% sold on that decision yet.
i just bought two indie cbeauty eyeshadow palettes literally the day after i told my mom i would stop spending any more money w my debit card… i think i needed this today 😵💫😵💫
I new to your page and I love this content! I have been listening while I downsize & organize. I am notorious for filling an online shopping cart and letting it sit in the tabs on my phone for days, weeks, months! If I decide it’s not a priority anymore I will delete it. But that way if I get into a spending mood and find myself buying, I know it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while! Currently stressing about Christmas, trying to be budget friendly with 5 kids.
Love all of your content and it has greatly helped me to start building better habits for myself... enjoyed all the stationery talk because that's where I'm hyperfixated right now... lol... thank you for all that you do... truly... building a life of true contentment and joy is so hard nowadays and people like you reminds me there's hope...
Hey If you want a special sticker and don’t want to buy a big sticker pack with it you can make your own! You need non stick baking paper, clear packing tape and a little doodle (f.e. The sticker with the motiv you wanted). Now You put a first layer of clear packing tape then doodle and then again clear packing tape! Hope this helps !!!❤❤❤
As a bullet journaler with ADHD planners is one I REALLY have to put on blinders for, my bullet journal is SOLELY for keeping myself in line and that include being more fiscally responsible XD I really empathize with the stationery thing because I've already found what I need to FUNCTION.
Which planner and/or method do you use to manage to your ADHD? I’ve been struggling trying to find one that sticks because eventually, I either forget or don’t do it cuz I can’t make it look pretty.
It took me a long time to come to terms that I will never get through a planner in a whole year. However, instead of purchasing expensive journals, I will buy a previous year's daily planner when it's 70% off and journal in it. 😊
You have inspired me to find a way to use an old planner for 2024 that my wife never used and to re-purpose it for 2025. I do use a daily planner and someone bought my wife a planner she never touched for 2024, so I'm going to re-date it and use it for 2025 instead of tossing it out and buying another! I also find myself saying things like, "I need more Christmas stuff to decorate with" and then I think of what you'd say and the advice you'd give and instead I'll go try and re-purpose something we already have or make something crafty with free pinecones from the yard or something.
My dad got me a Kindle 12-14 years ago and he put a ton of random books he may or may not have torrented. Between those, the books I already have and the occasional second hand book I buy, I have all the books I'll need for the next 10-15 years
Listen the doodle planner is super cool but I genuinely can’t get myself to spend on it. What if I don’t like a design, or I don’t fill it in? It’s so expensive if I don’t use every page. And personally, I don’t use a physical planner anymore. I used to bujo but it stopped working for me, and I haven’t used a physical planner since. The only physical planner I use now is a “budget planner” from Erin Condren. I set goals there and organize there because my finances are a huge aspect of my planning and organizing right now.
the ereader is such a big one for me, i got the kindle paperwhite for christmas last year and then kobo released their new color ereader where you can write notes in the margins and i want it so bad because i love to annotate but I literally just got an ereader and i dont even use it that often!! I listen to audiobooks the most often so idk why i feel the need for this new one so badly
I'm a die-hard fan of the bullet journals that 'Notebook Therapy' sell. Have been ever since they launched. When they first opened their store I was a little afraid that they would suddenly go out of business or something, I bought about 5 or 6 to stash in one of my drawers, ready to go in case the worst happens. They seem to be going from strength to strength now. I've since bought a couple for friends and family members, but now - even when they release a whole new bunch of products - I have to restrain myself to only buying one at a time. When I'm about a month away from completion, I'll order a replacement. But the temptation is real for someone who hoards stationery, but is lucky enough to live in a large house with so much space I can stash my sins away from prying eyes. They really are the best for bullet journaling. (And the fact that I still have ten unopened Leuchtturm's hidden away at the bottom of my closet - in grey, greige, white, teal and cornflower blue - because for ages they were my go-to regular journal, but I've since found other brands with better quality paper in a higher GSM that I can use all my fountain pens in with no ghosting or bleedthrough - but I will NOT part with them. Especially the colours they don't make any more. Everyone has their own little weakness and for me it's nice stationery. Using good stationery is soothing and I feel as though my words deserve to be contained within notebooks, journals or paper that make them the perfect receptacle for my thoughts.) As for the bullet journaling I don't really buy much to stick in them. I draw all my required tables or weekly spreads by hand and if I'm feeling fancy I'll print some photos off of the internet to create a header page for a new month, and use that colour scheme to decide upon what shades of ink pens I'm going to be using for the next month. It's all planning, listing, food logging, tracking and all the boring stuff in my calendar in there. I'm too old for cartoony stuff and I like things that err on the side of subtlety. But most of all, I just love the fact that it's where all my brain dumps all the important information, so if I'm using the system correctly, things either get accomplished or carried forward. My bujo is my brain, fr!
Omg the hobonichi planners have been advertising to me HARD. However, I already know I won't like the "forced" layout. I've been bullet journalling off and on since 2017 so I know what works for me. In 2025 I'm even going to be using a blank journal for the first time so I can have more creative freedom. I also only use a bujo for work to help me track what I need to get done that day as well as meeting notes.
@@JollyFisherNZ I'm totally the same way! I love these premade bullet journals, they're so beautiful but I write so much in a day that I could never use the ones being advertised so I get to make my own!
for me, i have taken to using the notes app or google docs for anything writing related and I'm better for it. i only use notes when I'm not at my pc or it's more convenient (also cause the mobile docs app is inexcusably janky for a google product), but my current main system is that i separate everything in it's own month's folder. one doc for a week of journaling and i just separate the days with headers, and the weeks will go into the month's folder. i also have a wishlist doc and a daily morning checklist on my phone for when I'm tired and disheveled. as long as you have a device and an internet connection, all of these services are free, and i quite like it :)
Well now you got me thinking of how old my eReader is... got it off Kijiji in like 2013?... it's very very basic Sony which is probably why it's still going strong. Cool to see how long they last compared to smartphones.
I feel you on the concert tickets! 🎫 but I actually bought a ticket. Back in August I saw a billboard driving through Philly and saw a band that I used to love would be playing nearby. Almost immediately, I bought a ticket but wanted to be up close ($300) and I was very excited because of nostalgia. (I hadn't listened to them in YEARS) it wasn't until at the end of the concert talking to another concert goer that I even learned that the lead singer wasn't the original guy that I had listened to. He had left the band like 2 years ago.... 😂 The concert was great, but did I need a $300-dollar ticket? Noooooo
Just wanted to leave my review that the Papier pages are so see-through if you use a ballpoint pen. I can see the entire backside of the page transferred through the paper.
Same,in the end I just got a simple chocolate one,I know I'll definitely use that 😂
Girl, nothing wrong with buying pack of stickers and washi - but the collecting of it is sooo addictive! Beware... I ended up with like 80 washi rolls before I knew it because they are fairly cheap :D so now I have a ban on them until I use them all up
That's the sneaky part of a collection to make us want to complete it.
The worst part is that I don’t want to use them…. I have about 200 rolls and don’t really use them because they’re so pretty…. It’s so dumb
When did it become normal to drop $50-60 on a planner?! Damn
...that's honestly crazy. My planner was $1.25 from the dollar tree and it does everything I need it to. 😂 Which is... be a place to write things.
I love this!! Thanks for sharing
You can consider upgrading your materials, then. For watercolor they make a huge difference, and the higher quality paints last longer because you would not need that much!
Yeah I got into oil pastel and since I'm shitty at it, I'm damn sure not buying more colors. Lololol. Glad you are painting every day!!!!
@__unwavering we can't be good at everything. I tried those too and they were confusing and difficult. Have you tried watercolor?
It's literally one of the best things I have ever bought.
Edit sorry:
Also want to add a lot of the time purchasing ebooks will save you money (don't even need an eReader you can use your phone or laptop) but that isn't always the case.
Also probably why I don't go super fancy.
i’m so jealous, i’ve been ready for retirement since the day i started working in high school! i hate work so much lol
This epiphany has really changed the process in which I consume things, and I sincerely want to thank you for that.
this is such a wonderful realization! I'm so glad to hear that my videos have been helpful
@@shawnaripari thank you for your content 💓
Yeah I still love the old school Leuchtturm 1917 A5 that was really popular in bullet journaling for a while and it still works great for me. But I'm often thinking about a Hobonichi Cousin or Weeks even though I know undated is the way to go for me. I keep trying to come up with reasons I need a Weeks-style journal and there just isn't one. I think I want one because I see other people doing really cute set-ups in them.
100% understand this because this is me also
I talked myself out of buying 2 travel size perfumes from the Sephora sale. I already know I want the full size bottles because I’ve used multiple samples of these perfumes and love them. It makes more sense to wait a few months and save up for the full size ones than spend $60 on minis just because they’re 10% off right now. I’d only “save” $6 anyway.
Yes, if you already know that might you'll enjoy them, then save until u can get the full-size bottles
I go to a perfume warehouse that has the same brands and name brand but significantly less. Still priced high but not as expensive as inside Sephora.
I actually had the opposite realization where I get bored or sick of full sized perfumes part way through and don't finish them, so I instead opt for the travel size so I have a smaller cash outlay and don't waste products
$78 for a notebook?! Girl, don’t do it!
I love using old things until they fall apart
Papier is my kryptonite-they are such great quality notebooks-but I have to remind myself that I use notebooks for me and no one else, so who cares if it’s luxe. Half the time I write notes on used envelopes anyway 😂
omg i loooove Papier. they have such cool and unique designs but they’re so expensive 😖 i bought a planner from them once and felt guilty the entire week 🤣
I almost feel like it only being for your own experience and pleasure is the best reason to buy it...
Instead of ‘will I buy it?!’ It’s ’I refuse to buy it!’ ❤❤
If you dispense with buying all the unnecessary crud you don’t need it frees up the resources to make dreams a reality! Thank you Shawna ❤
I regret buying the kindle because in canada they are not connected to libby :( I saw many reviews before, but they were all from the usa
Girl that was a near miss if that ereader was a kindle, almost guaranteed it wouldn’t have worked with your library in Canada 😆 love these videos!!
Kobo is the way to go in Canada! You can still side load amazon books but libby books will load directly
That shift in focus really helped me.
this is an incredible realization
In an odd way your no-buy/low-buy content is helping me to get more perspective and decide when it is alright to buy nice things for myself instead of letting my anxiety and guilt around spending control me.
sorry for the long post, just thought u might appreciate a unique perspective 😂
Super interesting perspective!!
Libraries are amazing!!! You're probably right that the app was underutilized
i would love to see a black friday video similar to your recent realistic sephora sale video!
she is coming 😉
It took me years to pick an e-reader. I don't have a computer so finding one where I could access digital books easily wss hard. After years I eventually bought a Boox because it's rather a tablet with e-reader screen tech so I can download apps I use without having to connect to any other appliance. I really like it but it took me years to take the plunge.
@@marlyd yes! I love my Boox. The android was a game changer for me.
Same here with my boox!
a new video from you was exactly what i needed today! good to see you, shawna
glad to hear it ! Hope you're having a good one 💕💕
I get sad every time I finish a journal. I always decorate the outside and I’m always obsessed with how they come out. So I feel you!
I laughed editing it back too!! I was like wait...why did I say that so casually. 9000 stickers is so much!!
as a person who genuinely uses a hobonichi planner and is pretty deep in the stationery rabbithole. you deserve better quality stickers than happy planner. i mean stylistically that all comes down to what's your taste but imo even the sticker quality itself is not that good. i recommend JetPens and Yoseka for stationery in general (both USA based but iirc ship to Canada for not an exorbitant price), my preference is JetPens for their easier to search website, but Yoseka has a lot of great stuff as well, it just takes a little more digging to uncover everything.
I guess the point is "get what realistically suits your lifestyle."
some of them use very nice paper, like hobonichi, but others are just profit for similarly low quality products
@@amandak.4246 I still cannot justify the price of aed 250 ($70) for high quality paper hobonichi😢
Just wanted to say I love your content and it's helped me on my decluttering journey and to stop the cycle of constantly buying stuff. On a side note have you ever thought of doing a podcast? I find your voice calming and soothing 😊
When you said (a few videos ago) “if you didn't know it existed, you don't need it” it helped put things into perspective SO MUCH
Hi Shawna ! I notice goal / sticker planners are being featured in videos on how to budget in an " aesthetic / funny " way with theme binders for cash stuffing with challenge mini cards you can partially colour every time you put some money in the binder etc . What do you think about this kind of budget organisation / saving up .
You're pointing out an interesting situation, I'd say have some but don't go overboard.
@@CrisOnTheInternet Some of them come with dice games 😀
Great question, I use my planner but am wondering about this same thing
Thank you!! So glad to hear you found something to work for you
I disagree that every craft or project has to be finished.
"the first category is... #1. Stationery" ok i feel personally attacked
That is such a good idea I think I'm gonna start doing that next year!
For years now, I use a planner that is customized for me and costs under 30€ (~32$). I can change the size, layout etc and can even add my own photos as a cover, address list, phone list, birthdays and even my contact information. This is the only thing I use for planning for the whole year including holidays. I don't understand why there are so many planners that always look the same and costs so much
Edit: called persönlicher Kalender
That sounds awesome! Can you share the name or a link to that planner?

Planners are not a thing for me, I’m happy with a Dollar Store pocket calendar. Saves me a lot of money.
@@singingfan I think it's a horrible company.
this was a great video! I loved hearing how you talk yourself out of things. gave me some new ideas for how to deinfluence myself as well.
Yesss normalizing using what we have 👏🏼👏🏼🎉🎉
I use a cheap blank planner and I love it because I get to decorate it! one week I was supposed to be resting after surgery and so I spent some time each morning coloring on each day where my to-done list is. Most weeks is just stickers, but it brings me so much joy and makes me want to use it. my planner starts clean and neat, but I can tell how bad my week was by how messy it becomes by the weeks end.
I ALMOST gave into the Sephora sale...but refused!!
Thank you I need to get a planner so bad I write down my things on papers I know what and where I have to be but man I need to get more organized
Any type of planner/organization journal is definitely a fantasy me purchase.

I LOVE YOUR CONTENT, THOUGHTS AND WILL,TY FOR COMMITTING
@@roxycocksey I use my planner to write down appointments and mandatory errands. I'm supposed to make it look gorgeous too?
@@helllique haha you make a good point! You’re right, it doesn’t need to be anything more than simply keeping your life in order. I was so obsessed with seeing gorgeous weekly/monthly planner spreads on Instagram. Simple and efficient is the way to go 💖

Very interesting stumbling upon your video as I just went to my first metal type show and it was TDWP. It was such a good show!
omg!! So glad you had a great time
I have a 10 dollar planner and it works great, the only thing I need is labeled boxes of the week, it is so basic, no decoration I just don't need anything else
Listening to you pop off about planners makes my Virgo heart so happy lol.
@@V01D.mp3 I thought the point of e readers was the whole e ink= less blue light exposure thing?
@@larynadams1127 That's one benefit, yes, but that's not a reason for me to immediately go and buy one. My main reason was to get something that's smaller than my iPad but bigger than my iPhone for travel that I don't have to charge as much as my iPad.
I might still make the switch and just sell off my iPad (one in, one out) but I'm not 100% sold on that decision yet.

I also find myself saying things like, "I need more Christmas stuff to decorate with" and then I think of what you'd say and the advice you'd give and instead I'll go try and re-purpose something we already have or make something crafty with free pinecones from the yard or something.
this sounds like a great idea!

Using good stationery is soothing and I feel as though my words deserve to be contained within notebooks, journals or paper that make them the perfect receptacle for my thoughts.)
As for the bullet journaling I don't really buy much to stick in them.
WHAT! I am so sad to hear this but appreciate this so much
