Hello Luke, You were very smart in shrugging off those scammers (or touts). If I'm allowed to give you an advice: the word "Machang" is used only among friends, never to a stranger. The Sri lankan touts approach you very cleverly. The advice to foreign travellers is: never believe a local who approaches you, offering everything under the sky. A normal Sri lankan might ask you "from which country are you?" / do you like SriLanka?" and never goes further to offer you everything under the sky!! Remain smart & have a wonderful holiday. The guy in the yellow shirt is a brutal scammer. I am right now in Sri Lanka and i got ripped off by him like a few days ago when doing the Yala safari tour. The tour was arranged by somebody else (probably the blue tshirt guy), I only saw him when he appeared in the morning. He tells everyone that he has like other people who also want to do safari so that in sum you're 4. Nevertheless I was too dewy-eyed in this moment and did all that stuff, but learned something for my life.

@@kevinthomas7040 mate, I'm in Sri Lanka I'm born in Sri Lanka i moved to aus when i was 1 and i stayed there all my life yeah Sri Lanka it's hard because of the presidential situation and sometimes it's not even that these Lankans are just trying to get extra money in their pockets you need to meet the locals they are much different to these people, these people have eyes to catch foreigners money that's all they want they take advantage for being in their country so that's a big issue even when i speak Australian English I get treated like a foreigner and I have black skin it's a horrible outcome for places like this the way people treat you and the risks they take by scamming you or luring you in to take your money
Ok this might come out as rude but its not intended to be. Its pretty funny to hear you say machan to everyone. Its not a greeting/something you say to everyone. Think of it like this, you would not normally say “bro” to your boss or dad or someone like that. Its more something you would say to someone who’s is closer to your own age probably same gender(unless you guys are close friends), basically among close peers/friends. You can say it to random people sometimes if they are being friendly and on your “vibe”/level i guess but not to every one. For example waiter at high-end restaurant:no machan, Friendly cashier at a store: machan acceptable. So basically bottom line I guess is friendly vibes same level, peers, friends, machan is ok. But even then its case by case. Infact if you say it to the wrong person they might think you are trying to be rude.
