Star Tropics was a game a guy at my workplace had. He spoke so well about it, I had to buy it. I ended up beating it first. He was older, with a family. I was single with too much time. I'm sure his skills were very good. Perhaps not the best game, yet it has memories. Mario is among my favorites as well. Just about everyone loves Mario, in some form. Atari never had a Mascot. Games were very new, and Atari was almost it's own mascot. I really enjoy RCPro AM, Gyruus, Adventure Island, Marble Madness, Gauntlet, and Xevious. Collecting for the NES is great for the newbies. Very inexpensive, and great fun. I am older, and I love Atari. Even though that is also cheap to collect, NES games are bigger, and more detailed. The price to fun ratio makes NES a winner.
@Jet Screamer, I agree! The nes is still great to collect for. It’s a good sign that I’ve played each of the games you’ve mentioned. StarTropics is a gem. Found it at a garage sale lot over 10 years ago. Had no idea what it was and it was pleasantly surprised.
My top 10 for NES: 1. Legend of Zelda 2. Megaman 2 3. Super Mario Bros. 3 4. Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) 5. Mike Tyson's Punch Out! 6. Contra 7. Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse 8. Super Mario Bros. 9. Final Fantasy 10. Life Force Honorable mentions to Battletoads, Tetris, Kirby, Faxanadu, Ninja Gaiden, and Double Dragon Good list BTW, I am listing many of the same games
@@PlayerOneStart yeah, Metroid probably belongs over my pick of Faxanadu as essential, I just feel Faxanadu is the better game and they have similarities with Faxanadu having stronger RPG elements and Metroid having better exploration.
Great video ! My top ten are as follows in no specific order; 1. Mario 1,2, and 3. 2. Legend of Zelda 3. Double Dragon 1 and 2 4. Final Fantasy 5. Jackal 6. Cabal 7. Mega Man 2 8. Mike Tyson's Punch Out ! 9. BattleToads 10. Castlevania 1, 2, and 3.
Excellent list. Lots of good memories. My childhood best friend and I played Contra all day for 2 weeks and finally beat it together in Summer '88 without using the Konami code. Man those were great times. He passed away about 5 years ago so anytime I see or hear Contra its bittersweet. But I do think of him every time I see or hear the music from that game. Only change I would personally make would be switching out Kirby for Ninja Gaiden.
@Jason Brown, thank you sharing. I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Glad to hear you have fond memories that you can remember him with. Ninja Gaiden is definitely fun, but for almost a completely opposite reason from Kirby. From the easiest game to the most difficult.
For the next part: Final Fantasy Dragon Quest 3 Ninja Gaiden Dr. Mario Blades of Steel Battle toads Zelda 2 Super Mario Bros. 2 Mega Man 6 Bionic Commando
I really loved these games (even today). In my country (back in the day), we had the Famicom Family (albeit the Chinese copied version...) In fact, we can still buy this system brand new in big brand stores with "built in" 500 games. Thanks for the video!
This is one of the best top-ten NES lists. Most lists include at least one mediocre game, such as TMNT. Your list has nothing but 5-star games that are very hard to argue against.
I am a Sega Men (I have a Master System, a Game Gear, a Mega Drive and a Saturn; no Nintendo in my house). But, I might try some of this 10 games, just to check what I have been missing out.
I owned and played all except for Ducktales and Tecmo Bowl. (I did however own several Tecmo Super Bowls for SNES) Its a solid list. I think maybe Kid Icarus should get a nod as well as SMB 1 considering theyre part of what I consider the “Core 4” (SMB1, Icarus, Metroid, Zelda). Dragon Warrior 1 should also get a nod as it was the first Classic Style RPG ro be released on a console. I would have swapped out Ducktales and Contra for those. Rygar is another outlier as it was unique with the alternating side scrolling platform and overhead view.
Yeah, those are all classics! I know these things are subjective, but my only suggestion for your particular top 10 is: how does Castlevania I compare to Castlevania III? I often see the third game ranked above the original.
Thanks @Big Ole Words. Yeah, that’s the thing about my list, it’s not ranked. I just picked 10 games. I agree though, Castlevania III is usually ranked well above the original.
The word "simplistic" means "treating a complex issue as if it were more simple than it really is". The word you were looking for to describe Duck Tales is "simple".
Yes the NES I got my NES in 86 the year I graduated high school of course loved it like everybody else eventually had every game on your list and the list is definitely on point but a few years ago I sold my NES and Super NES and all the games right now I have a NES and Super NES Mini in my collection so I play those both have been hacked but I actually do have a super famicom in my collection now and got about 83 carts for it love the NES but it is not my favorite retro system
The inclusions here are definitely great, except for "Tecmo Super Bowl", because I'm Brazilian and American Football doesn't appeal to me at all... Cultural difference, for sure (hahaha). I'd rather go with "Final Fantasy" instead as an essential inclusion. And since there was no shoot'em up being included here, I'd suggest "Life Force". Other ones would be "Ninja Gaiden", "Dragon Quest 3", "Double Dragon 2"... So, more essential games would feel more than welcomed indeed.
For any Europeans who may be put off by the game Tecmo Super Bowl: the game requires no knowledge of American football. It's more a puzzle arcade game than a sport game. It'll take you a couple of minutes to figure it out, and it's excellent.
I've beaten Mike every year since 2018 on an HD tv using an emulator. It's FAR from impossible. P.S. "older age" is an excuse, I'm five years older than you.

Thanks @Hepwo91222! Yeah, it was tough to get it down to 10. That’s a good list as well.

Great stuff young lad! Again, vetting my collection.
Thanks!
A part 2 would be awesome lad. Very much appreciated.
Good list my dude :)

Ninja Gaiden is definitely fun, but for almost a completely opposite reason from Kirby. From the easiest game to the most difficult.
Sorry for your loss!
I love how you start your videos with the old commercials, really takes you back...
Pls do a part 2
😁
my 11th choice would be Blaster Master
👍
Dang. Now I have to go play my NES. And scour Ebay for Mega Man 2 again.
😁 Fun times to be had on that NES. Still going strong after 35+ years. 🎮👍
Fantastic list and video Tyler! I think another 10 games would be very interesting! :-)
Thanks @TeeTekTrab! It was a lot of fun playing through these games again. Glad you liked it.
For the next part:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest 3
Ninja Gaiden
Dr. Mario
Blades of Steel
Battle toads
Zelda 2
Super Mario Bros. 2
Mega Man 6
Bionic Commando
Yeah, there are definitely a lot of great games on this system. Thanks for the future suggestions. 👍🎮
Solid list. One that is my personal favourites is Ninja Gaiden 1, played (and still play) it so many times.
these are great recaps of the showcase titles and gems. love the details!
I really loved these games (even today). In my country (back in the day), we had the Famicom Family (albeit the Chinese copied version...) In fact, we can still buy this system brand new in big brand stores with "built in" 500 games. Thanks for the video!
@Arcade Sunday, that is awesome. Thanks! Yeah, I find myself playing these games often. Never disappoints.
This is one of the best top-ten NES lists. Most lists include at least one mediocre game, such as TMNT. Your list has nothing but 5-star games that are very hard to argue against.
Thanks @The Winged Avenger! I appreciate the kind words. It took a lot of thought and consideration.
Excellent list of games. Part II would be welcome!
I am a Sega Men (I have a Master System, a Game Gear, a Mega Drive and a Saturn; no Nintendo in my house). But, I might try some of this 10 games, just to check what I have been missing out.

Good list. Please make essential nes games part 2
Thanks @Christopher Lawrence! Glad you liked it.

@@PlayerOneStart Hmmm you're absolutely right that the original is more "essential" than number 3. Certainly more than #2!
Good list, i would have added Double Dragon instead of Duck Tails thou.
yes keep them coming and a Sega master system video would be great!
Thanks @paperback junky. The master system is a cool idea.
The word "simplistic" means "treating a complex issue as if it were more simple than it really is". The word you were looking for to describe Duck Tales is "simple".
That’s the beauty of language and regional dialects. Sometimes words are used outside their definition but you still got what I meant.

@Jeff Stephenson, Nice! '86 was a good year :) Good work on the collection. Definitely a fun system.
Could you make videos about the Atari Jaguar, 3DO, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast

100% agree. 😁 More of a video game than a football game is how I explain it.
I've beaten Mike every year since 2018 on an HD tv using an emulator. It's FAR from impossible.

No River City Ransom or Crystalis? Shame on you.
