    Hi, great video and a very detailed comparison. So I'm in the lookout to upgrade my Mac and I'm looking looking at the MacBook Air M1. Should I settle for the base $999 model or do you think in should put in a little more for the 8 core variant? I will be using it mostly for writing and probably light video/ audio editing.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either will work fine but the advantage of the higher tier is the 512gb SSD (handy when video editing) and the extra gpu core which will improve gpu perfomance but about 10%. I personally would take the higher tier unless I was really strapped for cash

    Great review and helped me a lot (including the many comments from the folks that red your post).. I bought the MBP Pro m1 and I like a lot, except that for Lightroom, found that the display was too small, I was looking at buying the base XPS15 and upgrade memory to 64GB and disk to 2TB price wise would be close to what I paid for the M1, however.......after reading all the comments and your video about XPS getting hot and the fan working a lot and and being loud, I am reconsidering my decision and perhaps I should just keep the M1. I'd appreciate your feedback on this hard decision, do you think the XPS would get hot just using Lightroom ? ( I would be processing large files from my sony A7RIV , a 60 MP camera) . I've just subscribed to your channel, I like your style, to the point and no hype or unnecessary comments or details , keep up the good work !!

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you mate, I appreciate the kind words. When you are processing large files the fan will kick on and it will heat up. How much depends how long and hard you push it. Video rendering as an example gets the machine hot as you are pushing the machine full tilt when you export and heavily when editing so the machine does get quite hot. If you like the m1 but the screen is too small your other options are 1. To wait for the 16” model which will be coming this year (probably March) or get an external monitor to dock to when you are in the office (this is what I do and did a video of my setup for my m1 MacBook recently)

      @@MashITTech thank you for your prompt response. I used my friends current Intel MBP 16 (i9 version) and foud that the unit was getting hot with minimal stress , for me , that criteria is up high, no point of having a lap top that I can't place in the lap because of the heat. I think I m going to return the 13 and wait for the M1 16" that hopefully will be redesigned and lighter than the current version, I hope you are right and they announce this new version in March , that his probably going to be a cool power house !!

But i have to say, if you are focused to rendering even the XPS is not the best choice for this. (There are many better and cheapier devices available for that)

    I am thinking of buying one of these two for college, however since I occasionally use 3D rendering software (solid works or fusion 360 on macOS) and programming (matlab), I am leaning more for the 9500 because of its GPU. How would the MacBook Pro fare on those tasks?

      @@MashITTech Wow, thank you for that offer! I am not sure how demanding is Blender on the GPU but 3D CAD software can get quite laggy on integrated GPU laptops, however since the M1 has surprised everyone I think maybe you could try downloading a trial version of Autodesk Fusion 360 and just get a feel for how smooth it renders stuff (you can easily download projects from www.thingiverse.com/). Matlab is a programming software, but you can plot and simulate a lot of stuff with it, so again I am not sure how the M1 will fare with it. It’s Apple, so there needs to be some negative commenting. People who watch this won’t be happy otherwise. Because it’s, you know, Apple.
      Did you turn the sound up all the way on both?
      You can see all the glare on the Dell screen, on the top. That’s because matte screens spread the glare all over the screen, rather than a brighter area in a smaller spot. For proper color grading, we prefer a glossy screen, and use it so that light doesn’t reflect off the screen. You get more accurate contrast, blacks and color that way.
      Keep in mind that the M1 chip has only 4 high performance cores, and 4 high efficiency cores, that together are about equal to one high performance core. So the chip is really equivalent to a 5 core Desktop chip. That makes the multi core performance more impressive.

It never gets hot, it obviously doesn’t get loud and has amazing performance with also great battery, keyboard and screen. Definitely agree about the function keys (Apple blew it on that). Next year the performance difference gap will only increase when Mx ARM chip architecture starts being manufactured at the 3nm level and the rumor of 32 processor ARM Silicon chip being made for desktops. Intel (stuck at 10nm) and AMD (matches M1 5nm at present) are approaching the thermal limits of the 8086 CISC architecture.

    Good comparison overall, but the speaker comparison was surprisingly unscientific. What were the settings of system volume and music player volume? Could you not have simply adjusted the volume to match between the two computers? I think overall tonal balance and maximum volume below a certain amount of distortion would make a more useful comparison. Now I love 17" screens so I will always give up a bit of portability to have that screen size. But what Dell has done is pretty incredible with regards to the form factor. If you have a 15" laptop from a couple of years ago, that is about the size of this 17". It is also pretty light and has a much more robust cooling system than the 15" (I did a video where I compare the 9500 to the 9700 if you are interested)

      @@MashITTech I love mine. I definitely find the hold and slide way of modifying volume and brightness to be far superior to the tap tap tap method of before. I also like being able to customize which functionality is available by default. Then there's the function keys themselves. I'm a software developer so I have a few programs that require function keys. But most don't. With the physical function keys I was forced to map my function keys to *always* behave like function keys and then press fn when I wanted to use the media keys. Now I can make the function keys appear by default only in those apps that require it (Vim and Terminal in my current usage). Every other application can make use of the touch bar. And even if a particular application doesn't offer anything I want I still get the default buttons in the top right (the "control strip"). Currently I have a screen brightness slider, a volume slider, a mute button and a lock computer button. But other options are available.
      I don't use too many per-app touchbar controls but there are a few that I find very useful. One is switching between remote monitors in the screen sharing app and another is changing screenshot destination. Every now and again I'll use the actual media controls (play pause, etc) and quicktime seeking.
      In the end my net usability has gone *up* with the touchbar. The only real complaints I have after 4 years is that I wish there was haptic feedback like the touchpad has and that it would detect the difference between a tap and a click. Beyond that I would love it if their external keyboards supported it too.

      @@berjbannayan8666 the only complaint I would have for this touchbar is I wish they would update it more and give it new functions. For example when I'm in youtube full screen sometimes I forget to like the video so I would have to exit full screen then like the video then go back into full screen. They should add a function when you can like, comment or do anything without leaving the full screen.

    I don’t understand these Apple to Wintel comparisons. It’s really about which OS you want to use. It’s kind of like comparing an SUV to a Pickup. They aren’t in the same class. Either you want a pickup or you want an SUV. The Dell XPS should be compared with, I don’t know, a Lenovo something or other, and the M1 Mac with, well right now an Intel Mac. I know that with all the Apple stuff we have around here, any Wintel PC is going to be the square peg in the round hole.
    Conversely if We had Android phones, Samsung tablets, and echo dots around here I would probably be looking through the Dell catalog for a new PC.

    • @MashITTech
      @MashITTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are completely different classes of laptop but people were asking to compare to see if the m1 could keep up with a similar workload as an xps. Obviously if you need Windows then the mac is not a machine you would be able to consider

      Arm...general use or mainstream and power efficient but compatible issues not power use. Smartphone tablets phones calculators radios electronics gps appliances...some commercial general servers.

      @@cjonwickham1933 that’s the reason why apple is transitioning. right now X86 is better as in “PRO” grade but in near future with RISC “ARM simplicity and less instruction sets it’ll make everything better in future. just look at iPads as an example, they were never instructed with Cisc making it more efficient for pro developers as they do less instructions and codes . as i said right now x86 is superior but when apple is already 5 years ahead of everyone in the nect 2 years transition period estimation i can see AMD and intel ( if they still alive 😂) to follow apple’s ARM transition
