Me: "...Do you know where and _when_ you are, sir? All men are made in the image of God, and I have a God-given right to speak to my fellow man as I see fit. If I am to hold my tongue in your presence _at your sayso alone,_ what does that make you?"
Lmao so good and so bad 😂 Also, as a character design note, I like that the womens' hair color adds an extra hint of mystery as to which one is a blood related Dauterive: Rose and Bill have red/auburn hair. Violetta and Gilbert have dark brown hair. Lily has blonde, and Aunt Esme has (now grayed) former blonde or light brown hair. It makes it harder to guess until the very end. I like to think this was intentional, it's a fun detail.
Gilbert pointed out an imposter in the family photo. He wouldn't have accepted if Violetta tried to bring in an outside male and give him the Dauterive name.
Gilbert refusing to allow Bill to sell the recipe makes sense when you consider the traditional mindset of the Southern aristocracy- they thought that commercialism was crass, "Yankee", and beneath them. That's why Binx's family is so disappointed in him being a stockbroker in The Moviegoer even as he makes good money- it was unbecoming of a Southerner. Basically, the Southern aristocracy wanted to be like European nobles and saw themselves as the inheritors of Greece and Rome. So a literary magazine was high culture and thus allowable while a sauce line was just crass commercialism.
Gilbert was a man living in the past. He was never willing to admit that the aristocracy of his family was long dead as nobody of his generation was actually upholding those traditions. I wouldn't even be surprised if he considered himself the only true dauterive left. Squirrel Tactics logic that the family had gotten into inbreeding makes sense when you remember that he called one of his relatives an imposter. Meaning he had very little regard for anyone not related by blood.
I just love how excited Hank was to find Common Ground with Gilbert talking Football and then how creeped out he was Immediately afterwards. I think Hank was disappointed every time he tried to talk to Gilbert.
To be fair he could say: "You can sell my recipe under 2 conditions: I get a part of the money and the name of the food and it's derivates must have the name Dauterive in it" and honestly Buck could probably agree with at worst with the second one
I have sacrificed our land to preserve our dignity, what would you have done with your street-walkers gold, eh? bought more of THESE? DOUBLE STUFFED CHOCOLATE SANDWICH COOKIES!?! J'ACCUSE!
You sacrificed your land for dignity you sacrificed everything for nothing I think I would just snap my fingers and pretend he’s not there the best outcome right there
The reason Violetta likely wanted Bill is this weird phenomena. It’s when blood relatives have been long separated, are naturally attracted to one another. This isn’t always sexual (which, it can be), but there is some like genetic magnetic pull to one another. I think there was inbreeding with the Dauterives, so Violetta falls into that percentage of sexual attraction towards Bill.
I mean that entire fuckin mansion (well, at LEAST 3 anyways) wanted Bill's "family sauce" so that's like 3 coincidences. I wanna hug and catch up with my long-lost cousins too every Thanksgiving and/or Xmas but I don't wanna hump them.
As a guy born living in Louisiana, Gilbert did it so well, I came down with a case of the horribles. Also, I love Hank's stoic expression when Bobby was suggesting ordering some etouffe before throwing his closes out the window
The most flamboyant guy on the show. I do wish him and bill were able to get a better end off than an argument on how the doutreve men would be remembered Bill still has a chance to find love if we had that cake scene and it's not like he doesn't get ladies either.
I like to think that Bill produced a child with Rose or Lilly, but Gilbert had her kicked out of the house when she got pregnant because of family pride. So somewhere out there, there is another Dauterive who just doesn't know it.
There's also that hair stylist that comforts Peggy from that episode where Bobby's taking home ec (he's not gay just European) (the hairstylist), all the male hairstylists in Hottyz, Bill HIMSELF when he was a hairstylist in Hottyz, and I suspect one or both of those army dudes (General: "Who knows how to cut hair?" army dudes: "Don't answer, it's a trick!") In just 4 seconds they show off every stereotype of gay. What is it with cutting hair and being gay/flamboyant? I've never had that experience IRL, not that I would really care as long as they can give me a good chopping. Maybe managers tell them privately to tone it down.
When it comes to the Bill Must Suffer side of the show, I think it would be pretty on point if Bill went ahead with selling the recipe and it turned out the family recipe violated a few copyrights or set off a few long buried feuds the Dauterives ran away from or thought long forgotten.
I always chuckled at the fact that Dale specified "in English" because of the fact that a lot of people from South Louisiana speak Louisiana French as a first language and one should never assume, especially not with older folks. That's likely not why Dale asked, but that just adds to the humor.
I have been a long time lover of King of the Hill and I recently discovered your channel. I had nine seasons of it on DVD before the entire catalog was on Hulu. I look back on these episodes fondly. I always look forward to your videos. You put a smile on my face and I thank you for what you do.
Not trying defend Gilbert but I think the reason he wouldn’t sell the family recipe because he didn’t want the family name to possibly become a joke like what KFC did with Harlan Sanders.
Fun fact: Harlan Sanders loathed KFC and would for years berate the restaurants for not even using his recipe. He even tried to open a second restaurant after KFC took off: "the colonel's lady's dinner club". The man would travel around, causing scenes at KFCs, swore so much he once went to an Australian priest convention to try to stop his swearing, had a mistress turned second wife who lived in his car with him...The colonel was a character.
Gilbert treating the homeless man like anyone else changes absolutely everything I thought about him, bless that wonderful man. Aside from his arrogant stubbornness, but even though he had servants and was blind to reality, as a former homeless person, anyone who will even Look at you shows they're compassionate.
Yeah, I don't know. He treats his last of kin like dirt for delusional grandiose notions. So I can't help but cynically think that the way he treated the homeless man was just an example of "noblesse oblige." A casual act of virtue signaling rather than human decency.
Damn I forgot how much this show makes me hungry, the animation of the food in king of the hill is the absolute best, they make it look so good, I saw the ribs and had to stop the video to comment that everytime they show them cooking meat it makes my mouth water
I think Bill was hedging his bets at the end. He passed it on to Bobby with 2 likely goals: 1) If Gilbert died first, he could sell off the recipe without guilt because Gilbert is dead (and the family doesn't seem to care about the wishes of the dead) 2) If Bill died first, he could leave Bobby the recipe and Gilbert couldn't do squat. It is rather funny that every angle looking at their conflict favors Bill selling the recipe. People still eat barbecue, but by 2007 (when the episode aired) print media was crumbling. The iPhone had just come out and eReaders were about to storm the market.
Imo it would be considered selling out .... but if they kept their family name on the recipe Example ribs de la Fontaine It would be their last legacy .
The problem with Violetta, is the "D'Haute Rive" name and legacy was bound to the male heirs, the sons. It was a patriarchy type family. Women didn't count as passing on the name and blood of the family. Even if Violetta convinced her man to take on the family name, he would not be of the D'Haute Rive bloodline, and thus would not count either, by their family's tradition. It must be through blood and breeding of a son.
@@zestybutterfly7161 perhaps going by the French maxim of "qui aime bien chatie bien" or "who loves well chastises well", i.e. why some people of aristocratic bearing are always harder on their kin than on those outside their family.
On the original version of this video, somebody commented their hypothesis that Gilbert knew that the Hills couldn't handle having all that money and so, by telling Hank to let Dandy Don take the throw, he was trying to save them from the inevitable corruption from having so much money so fast.
I have to say the first Gilbert episode is probably one of the funniest episodes in the whole series-and one of the most uniquely king of the hill concepts. There really isn’t another estranged family reunion episode in other tv shows that are even similar to this, especially played so straight.
I always liked how Hank is respectful of people's names regardless of if he likes them or not. Hank could say Gilbert's name with the hard G but is respectful enough to say it Gilbert's name with a soft G. Same thing with pronouncing Mrs. Kalaiki Ali'i
Hank didn't win the grand prize in the beer can luanne actually did, even tho it was hanks beer that was in the fridge at the time luanne couldn't participate because of her being under 21.
I think Bill should’ve just simply outright sold the family recipe without Gilbert’s permission. And if Gilbert had anything to say about it, Bill could’ve just simply said I don’t recall you consulting me when you sold the family estate for your stupid magazine.
Am I mixing up relations or who owns what? Gilbert can sell off the estate/house w/o anyone else's permission bc it was his mom's. The BBQ recipe isn't just from Bill's line, it (supposedly) belongs to everyone in the family living.
so a bit of background history that no one will ever care about, the "D'hauterive" last name has existed in Louisiana for hundreds of years, since it was first established as a french colony. over time 90% of the relatives changed their name to Dauterive the American version of it (my last name) i do have distant relatives who still go by D'hauterive, and they actually act like gilbert and his family.

I'm so glad you mentioned Tennessee Williams right out of the bucket! Too many people don't seem to get it.
I've long said that this episode is one of the best written episodes of an animated show EVER. Easily. Absolutely brilliant.
Gilbert selling the estate and basically squandering the proceeds is also pretty in-line with Streetcar (certainly intentional!).😅
I would love to watch a prequel about the Deautrieves
I should also mention one of the early Sopranos episodes (S1E8, The Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti) was named after Tennessee Williams. Great work dude :)
As much as I also think Bill should have just sold the recipe, I respect him being the bigger man about it and not going against the wishes of his only living relative. That said, Gilbert’s a prick.
oh sweet! i really like this episode! oh the one where they go to Bills families; thats a favorite.
