The best thing Larian could do for bg3 is release mod tools for the playerbase. Then, we will see lots of exciting content while they work on their next project.

I would love mod tools, but I'm pretty sure their contract with WotC prevents a creation kit release, WotC owns D&D beyond and they do not want Larian to create a better version of D&D Beyond. What we can hope for on the other hand is a creation kit for the next game they release in a few years.

He did at least say in a follow-up interview that they'll be fleshing out the evil endings with new cinematics, etc, which is cool. I'm excited irrespective of what they do, since he said the new rpg will "dwarf" BG3. Also no real surprises that they don't want to work with WOTC anymore, after they laid off the entire team that Larian had been working with all those years, which he called them out for in one of the other Game of the Year acceptance speeches.

My biggest hope is that, if they continue doing CRPGs, they take a lot of what they implemented in BG3 and carry it forward. I've been playing Divinity OS1, and I can't stress how much I miss having Jump. Jump is such a great command in third-person games: I never imagined it being in a CRPG. Now that it's been there, it feels so limiting NOT having it. Jump, push, throw... I pray those aren't stuck in DnD land.

The is unironically the one thing that made BG3 so fun to play and explore for me. Larian went the extra mile and designed the entire game as a 3D space due to the presence of jump, shove, etc., which made EVERYTHING from combat encounters to looting much more dynamic and natural. I cannot count how many times I asked myself "Can I jump over there?" and ended up discovering some cool loot or a vantage point against enemies.
Not to mention, seeing Laezel jumping over the entire front line of the enemy to devastate high priority targets never gets old

It´s a finished game though. I mean, surely the industry now has trained us to expect like 4 DLCs, live services and teases for sequels. But games that just finish still exist, I would even say most are like that minus the big ones from big companies that are constantly trying to drag those IPs for stock market value of their companies. The only reason why I fell Larian made this statement, it´s probably because people keep asking them in interviews and social media just because given it´s success, it´s what we are all expecting. Like you I´m glad they are looking away from that mentality, we need more studios to stick their guns and defend a market of ideas like the main focus, not profit numbers to satisfy investors, that´s what has made EA, Ubisoft and Activition the souless husks they are now.

I would love some Avernus DLC, tho don't think how progression would work after lvl12 without making basically a new game or 1/2 new game at least.
I would've liked some more games in the setting from Larian, but making a sequel would be impossible to do without forcing a canon and also, imo, outside of the setting most of the fun/good in BG3 is Larian systems and things in first place, almost nothing to do with DnD. Also, if ever BG4 or whatever installment in the series would be created, even by Larian, it will have to deal with expectations and the shadow from BG3 (I think they themselves kind of "scared" of that pressure and expectations, not because of backlash, but because it would affect creative approach)

Why you bringing this up out of nowhere? It doesn't even have anything to do with your original comment... Honestly, you sound bitter and jealous that Bethesda is on the decline while Larian is at the peak of their success...
Also, Skyrim is great, not because of Bethesda, but because of the modding community that keeps it alive and interesting after all these years. They peaked at Morrowind and since then have been on a steady decline. New Vegas was made by Obsidian under far greater constraints and it still surpassed Bethesda's FO3. Oblivion only had a fraction of what Morrowind had, and Skyrim only had a fraction of what was on Oblivion. If it weren't for mods, their games would have died out a long time ago. DD2 and BG3, on the other hand, can stand on their own even without mods, so in that regard Larian is a better developer than Bethesda ever was IMO...
And yes, most companies grow, peak and decline. Bethesda has grown past their prime and now other companies are taking their place, and one day it will happen the same with Larian, but until then let people enjoy what they have.

I think this might be for the better. They will be able to make their original IP and won't have to deal with Hasbro. Better for them to make something they fully own. No wonder Swen was angry, Hasbro fired the people who helped Larian get the D&D license. This is how they "reward" success.

Aside from the WotC issues and from I've heard the licensing agreement was very expensive. WotC/Hasbro being left to their own devices to tend to the BG franchise seems kinda dubious, imo. Larian's whole "pay once, own forever" philosophy seems to directly contradict the live service thing WotC is trying to do with One D&D or whatever it's called. Sure, BG3 is a set adventure whereas One D&D lets users DM, but the whole virtual table top thing kinda invites the comparison.

My guess is that this is 100% WotC's fault. Their CEO used to work for Microsoft (95% sure, correct me if I'm wrong) and made a comment saying "D&D is Undermonetized", which is where the concern that they're going to implement microtransaction-style BS in their upcoming VTT came from. And I wouldn't be surpriseed if they saw BG3's success and were like "Okay, we want you, Larian, to include all this extra stuff that goes against all the good will you've built." I think a lot of other RPG companies surely are about to approach Larian Studios at this moment, trying to boost their franchises on the back of how successful BG3 was.
Which is why I don't think they will go for something new, these companies are probably a lot more willing to provide finances and leeway after such a success.
The most obvious candidate would probably be Paizo, but they might still have some contracts with Owlcat games, which might prevent a new game by a different studio.
Or maybe White Wolf, with the World of Darkness-World. they were releasing quite a few games recently and might want to push for a proven developer. Although, this might conflict with the upcoming Vampire the Masquerade-release.
What I would love to see is their take on Shadowrun or The Dark Eye. Both are still fairly popular, but obscure enough that a good game could boost the franchise massively.

On the one hand I'm sad it's not getting any DLC but on the other hand I respect their choice, I think the game doesn't really need more content, and I'm also sure making DLC for this game would be a pain in the ass because of how the story ends and how many different ways it can end.
I wouldn't like a DLC set in the middle of the story because it would break the pace of the game IMO, but if you make something that's set after the events of the game... what would it even be about? What endings and choices would be canon? Is "Ascended Astarion" the canon ending or is "Redeemed and good person Astarion" the real one? Did Karlach died in the end or did she just went to Avernus with Wyll? Did Wyll resold his soul to save his dad or did he take his father's place instead as Duke in Baldur's Gate? And what about Gale? Did Gale became a god or did he became a teacher? And what if some characters didn't even join you? What if you missed Minthara (even now, when you don't need to save the grove)? Or Halsin? Or Minsc? What if you chose to be evil and Wyll didn't even joined you?
It's a slippery slope if you think about it so maybe "not doing shit" is a better option than the alternative.

I wouldn't be surprised, given the state of release of Starfield, if they took their engine, design formula, game mechanics, and did a "D:OS in space" style game.
So, you were (insert here) on a spaceship going to an "Earth 2" style planet, got attacked by (insert here), crashed on the planet in an escape pod, and found (insert here) through being found by inhabitants of that planet who were suspiciously humanoid. You find throughout your questing, er travels, that these humanoids had travelled through space to Earth millions of years ago when their planet was about to fail and those left behind on this planet had barely survived, evolving into the humanoids you encounter.
It would be far more dense in story, exploration, questing, etc, than what Bethesda released and more akin to Obsidian's Outer Worlds except turn-based combat.

Plus, I agree that after working on a thing for 6 years straight the team could be experiencing project fatigue and wanting to do something new.
