Eli Roth has finally brought his Grindhouse trailer to life in the new slasher film, Thanksgiving. While the gore and B-movie charm was fun, I felt the writing and characters held this back from being an instant holiday classic.

I enjoyed this movie. It gave me Scream vibes, and the audience I saw it with had fun. Plenty of laughs and "oh shit" moments regarding the kills. One of the more fun theater experiences I've had in recent years, similar to Halloween Kills. The killer reveal is very obvious, but I was confused as to how this character was in two different places at once towards the end. I'll have to rewatch and see if I can make sense of it. The acting varies from mediocre to good depending on the actor. They did a good job of implementing Thanksgiving elements and humor. I'd say this is about a 7/10 movie on it's own, and it's elevated by the theater experience. I do wish that John Carver was just a faceless vigilante, showing people through brute force that they should give thanks for what they have, rather than being greedy and selfish, instead of unmasking him as a specific character used as a twist.

Some of the best and most popular slashers typically have at least a few likable characters, which really helps make the overall film enjoyable instead of just the kill scenes. The characters certainly don’t need to be deep, but at least make them entertaining or even tolerable to be around.

Great unique kill scenes and gore. It’s the total package. Eli Roth has given us one of the greatest “slasher movies” of all time. Now I’m just hoping we can get a future “Scream” movie from him one day 🤞🏼.

@@andremarcs6924I agree, and felt that the teens were likable and charismatic, but I do think that the final girl’s energy and believability lapses toward the end. One minute she sees her friend’s guts spill out and the next she acts totally unphased. Side note: what’s with the score? In the final act, it sounds like a standard Christopher Nolan-type blockbuster rather than slasher. I know that Craven was forced to water down the score to Scream to make it less creepy and “intimidating”to audiences (the original one was very Halloween-ish) so maybe a similar thing happened here? Still a great time.

For what it is it's most definitely better than a 6/10. The acting wasn't bad at all so idk how you point that out as a flaw, that's objectively just not true. Based off your rating, no slasher could ever be a 10/10 and that's not a fair scale. Rate it based off what it is and what it's trying to be. It's easily a 7.5/10 on a slasher scale. Now if you're comparing it to an Academy Award type film then yeah a 6 would be fair but that's just a ridiculous way to rate it

As far as Thanksgiving themed horror that embraces the look and feel of the day and makes it front and center in the movie rather than a background detail, it's either this one or Pilgrim from 2019 that's done it best.
There's also Kristy, which I think is a very solid and highly overlooked horror gem in its own right, but that one is in the same category as Blood Rage and Home Sweet Home in that Thanksgiving is really just a minor detail in the background of the movie.

SPOILER BELOW FOR THOSE THAT HAVE/HAVEN’T WATCHED:
I thrououghly enjoyed the movie, but I have one nitpick that I’m definitely overthinking: when Jessica (final girl) escapes the horror house of the thanksgiving feast, she gets over the fence, and has a running start towards the industrial buildings/where all the floats are at. However, John Carver just happened to beat her there when she had the head start, change into his police attire, and play ‘knocked out’ before she even saw it.
Again, a stupid nitpick that had me and my GF audibly saying “well that’s just silly”. He’s quick so I guess that’s why. Overall I enjoyed it!

I was worried about all of the obnoxious Boston stereotypes at the beginning, thinking it was going to be like that for the whole movie - but gladly that wasn't the case. The only really bad acting that stood out was Scuba. Overall, I really liked it. Would've preferred something more in line with the Grindhouse trailer, but it's good for what it is. I thought that the reveal was going to be Bobby and Ryan teaming up to do the kills.

I saw this and it reminded me a bit of the Intruder, silent night deadly night and My bloody Valentine the original. I thought they were gonna do something like that. The only reason I knew who then killer was, was because of Scream 6. My boyfriend and I were going back in forth of who the killer was. I think my nostalgia for these older films makes me like this film a lot more. I do see what you mean though by the writing. I myself though really enjoyed it 9/10. I do enjoy your perspective though as always.

Great video as always. I agree with you about the ending, it looked like Patrick Dempsey might have been disguised as a firefighter inconspicuously leaving the crime scene. They should have left it at that with Jessica’s suspicion. Is it just me or did they have a little homage to the movie Happy Birthday to me when they had the victims at the kitchen table? Anyway, keep up the great work.

I thought Hobo with a Shotgun was another faux trailer? I relatively enjoyed it, even though I agree with your criticisms as well. I'm wondering what Jessica's motivations were at the end though for letting the person she suspected was the killer go? I know I would have certainly drawn attention to my suspicions

I completely agree. People are very quick to call this the best slasher since Scream, and I think that’s wishful thinking. The supporting characters are underwritten, which robs the murder scenes of much-needed gravity.

100% agree that ____ person who will not be named 😂would’ve been a better reveal. However, it’s always tough doing that with a heavier person because it makes it a little easier to see on the killer. But totally agree and would’ve been great seeing him carve up his new wife seeing that literally during the movie he admitted marrying her was a bad idea 😂

Definitely some good things going on with this film. I'm typing this while Cody is talking so I might rehash somethings he says. As for gore, A+. My only issues are the dialog and the killer reveal. The dialog had a "Rob Zombiesque" style. There's was about 100 F words in the 1st half of the movie. The main characters, as most movies, are actors in their 20s playing teenagers. As for the killer, I was hoping for a mystery killer that nobody thought of. And his motive was...meh. other than that, I really enjoyed it. Great slasher for the holidays.

Loved the film Cody for the most part. Few negatives I had is I feel like Patrick Dempsey was at certain locations where the killer was at a different location at the same time? If that makes any sense? Like when he was out side of the school and then all of a sudden he’s inside chasing after her then quickly and conveniently already waiting outside for her? That happened a couple times where he seemed to be at two places at once. That’s why I thought there might be a second killer. Other thing is I felt like the last 10 minutes were a little rushed and ending felt abrupt. But pretty much loved everything else!

The movie was great fun. I’m English and watched it at my local cinema which was packed. Everyone had a blast with this film. It was gory and hilarious. Although I was hoping Eli would push the gore further. I’ve never understood why people feel the need for likeable characters in a slasher. Yes we have great characters like Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott. But for the most part people don’t care, and they go to slashers to see a killer butcher people in creative ways.

Solid new holiday horror movie. Like a better version of valentine. I didn't hate or love the characters. Good enough. I would've liked the grindhouse feel as well, however I don't really think that would work with a movie set in 2023. If he was going all in on the grindhouse feel, I think they'd have had to set the movie in the '70s or '80s to make it work. Obviously that would've required a lot of story changes.
